Jeff Matsushita is the director of the Engaging Men Project at Boise State University. We initially discussed the origins of Jeff's interest in working with men, which occurred after watching the film Tough Guise as an undergraduate student. He became increasingly interested in men and masculinity and formal work with groups of men. He eventually took a position with the Idaho Coalition Against Domestic Violence, which was quite formative for him. He also has worked with the national group A Call to Men, which similarly works to decrease rates of gender-based violence by engaging men directly. Jeff reflects on mentors who have helped him grow in his work and personally and how his professional work on engaging men has impacted him personally. At the end of the conversation, Jeff provides some helpful guidance on resources for those further interested in the work he discussed of engaging boys in men to decrease gender-based violence.

We're kicking off the new year with a fascinating episode exploring masculinity and how institutions need to engage and retain men on campus. Charlie speaks with Dustin about his recent ACUHO-I magazine article that included research he recently completed on this topic.
Why is it so important to engage men and boys? Join as on this episode of Table Talks as we discuss with Ryan Wolfe his thoughts on leadership, mentoring, and engaging men and boys.
In a culture that shows a majority of violent acts perpetrated by men, how can we help to empower men and boys towards healthy behavior that honors and restores relationships? We invited Shawn Schutt, Community Engagement and Prevention Manager Underground Railroad Inc. & Co-Chair for the Mid-Michigan Human Trafficking Task Force, to share about how he believes sports are a great way to help coach boys into maturity and to unlearn behaviors that set the stage for future possibly violent behaviors. Shawn says that this work has to begin internally, and encourages each of us to check our own belief systems and how they may inadvertently promote relationship violence or abuse. 'Maitri' - Silicon Valley's Outreach for Assistance: In February 1991, a group of women came together to create a lifeline for South Asian women facing domestic violence, marking the birth of Maitri. Recognizing the service gap for immigrant South Asian women, they saw a need for culturally and linguistically accessible support, leading to Maitri's founding. Today, Maitri remains dedicated to bridging this gap and continues to answer the calls for help that started over three decades ago. Since 1991, Maitri has empowered thousands of survivors and emerged as a cornerstone for the South Asian community. Maitri offers holistic assistance through volunteer training, comprehensive resource guides, partnerships with legal and domestic violence organizations, and various programs and services. These include a Helpline, Peer Counseling, Transitional Housing, Legal Advocacy, Economic Empowerment, Individual Therapy, Support Groups, Community Outreach and Education, and Emergency Shelter Referrals. Maitri believes healthy relationships are built on mutual respect, open communication, and individual empowerment. All of their efforts are geared toward helping South Asians make informed choices. South Asia's Domestic Violence Problem: High Prevalence: South Asia faces higher rates of intimate partner violence, with 37% of women affected, exceeding the global average of 30% Economic Dependence: Financial dependency among South Asian women, with 58% not participating in income-related decisions, increases their vulnerability to domestic abuse Child Marriages: South Asia has the world's highest child marriage rates, with 30% of girls marrying before turning 18, contributing to heightened risks of domestic violence. * Data cited from internet sources and may not be 100% updated Maitri's Mission: Their mission is to empower South Asian survivors of domestic violence to lead lives of dignity and self-sufficiency through holistic programs and enable healthy relationships and gender equity through community education, engagement, and advocacy. "Violence against women, gender abuse, gender inequality – you find it everywhere. But it's our duty to stand against it." Nandini Ray In this Episode: In this episode, we explore the remarkable journey of Maitri, an organization dedicated to supporting South Asian victims of domestic violence. From its modest beginnings with a single phone line in a kitchen over 30 years ago, Maitri has grown into a powerful force offering various services, including legal advocacy, immigration help, housing, and more. Born from the empathy of a group of South Asian women in Silicon Valley, Maitri has evolved to have 18 staff members and around 50 committed volunteers, making it a significant source of support for the South Asian community. Nandini Ray shares her experiences with misogyny and domestic violence in India, emphasizing that this issue transcends class and culture. Through her heartfelt stories, we learn about three individuals who, thanks to Maitri, have been able to change their life trajectories. We hear tales of a mother reclaiming her self-worth, a young person escaping a forced marriage, and a man challenging gender norms by seeking help against abuse. While one episode can't possibly capture the full impact of Maitri's work, the organization stands out as a shining example of hope and resilience in the face of domestic violence. In an era where gender equality is a pressing global concern, Daniele stands at the forefront of challenging traditional norms and advocating for change. Daniele Fiandaca, the visionary founder of Token Man Consulting, is an expert in the field of inclusion and diversity. His insights on the pivotal role of men in the gender equality movement, as well as the obstacles they face, provide a fresh perspective on this critical issue.Daniele's journey toward advocating for gender diversity began a decade ago during his career in advertising, where he held various leadership roles. At that time, he organized events for creative directors globally, including one pivotal dinner event for twelve women. While the presence of twelve women didn't surprise him, what transpired when he entered the room was entirely unexpected.Upon entering the dinner, Daniele experienced an abrupt loss of confidence—an invisible force seemed to snatch it away. As the dinner progressed, he found himself surrounded by conversations he couldn't relate to, pushing him further into the periphery. When he attempted to introduce the dinner he had funded, his co-host, a woman, interrupted him. These experiences were strikingly similar to what women often encounter in male-dominated settings. It was through these firsthand experiences that Daniele truly grasped what it felt like to be part of the "out group." Despite his numerous privileges, he hadn't fully comprehended the extent of the impact such exclusionary experiences could have on individuals. This awakening marked the beginning of his commitment to driving change in the field of gender equality. In this episode Daniele Talks with us about:> The Necessity of Men's Involvement> Fostering Uncomfortable Conversations> Positive Masculinity: Nurturing a New NarrativeLinks and resources: Masculinity in the Workplace (21 Nov) https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/masculinity-in-the-workplace-2023-virtual-edition-tickets-705891599777?aff=oddtdtcreator Token Man Panel series - https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/token-man-panel-series-1095089 Token Man Brave Spaces - https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/token-man-brave-spaces-tickets-714728571397?aff=oddtdtcreat orResearch reports - https://www.tokenman.org/thought-leadership Sign up to Token Man Newsletter - http://eepurl.com/cixUBX Connect with Daniele - https://www.linkedin.com/in/danielefiandaca/

Promundo-US is a global leader in advancing gender equality and preventing violence by engaging men and boys in partnership with women, girls, and individuals of all gender identities. We believe that working with men and boys to transform harmful gender norms and unequal power dynamics is a critical part of the solution to achieving gender equality. For transformative, sustainable change, men and boys must see themselves as partners in the process. Men and boys also benefit when harmful norms are challenged. Our research, programs, and advocacy efforts show that exploring positive models of “what it means to be a man” and promoting healthy, respectful masculinity leads to improvements in the lives of women and girls, as well as in men's own lives, and the lives of individuals of all gender identities. 1. Engaging men in violence prevention interventions is crucial. Many of the issues we see today stem from harmful ideas of masculinity. In many societies these ideas lead to the justification of dominance over women and the use of intimate partner violence. In this episode we explore the many great research projects that are changing male perspectives, addressing the root causes of violence and creating meaningful change. Hear from guests Laxman Belbase from the MenEngage Alliance, and Phiona Koyiet from World Vision. Find out more at svri.org.
Ending gender-based violence requires effort from everyone. In this episode, Kellie Greene, a program specialist at OVW, joins Patchwork to share how her program seeks to engage children and men as allies in ending gender-based violence. As she puts it, the children of today will grow to become our future policy-makers, CEOs, and teachers, so educating them about the foundations of healthy relationships now will be instrumental in ending gender-based violence as they grow into their roles as future leaders.

How do you engage those groups who don't consider themselves ‘diverse' in the diversity conversation? This is one challenge our clients all have in common at EW. During the pandemic, many of us have been working from home, some juggling childcare and homelife between partners in a way we had not done before. In some cases, fathers have spent more time with their children. They've been there for bath time instead of on a commuter train. And they've experienced first-hand how flexible working can enrich their lives. As Elliot told us when he visited the EW podcast, now is the time for organisations to consider better supporting the fathers in their workplace. The benefits are tangible and measurable: from talent retention to productivity. Elliot and Rachael also discuss the intersection of fatherhood with race, disability and sexuality. Elliott speaks candidly about the emotional labour of being a black man in the diversity field. http://musicfootballfatherhood.com/https://twitter.com/MFFonline_Follow EW Group on Twitter and LinkedIn for the latest news and thinking in diversity and inclusion.EW Group has worked with organisations to build more diverse and inclusive cultures for almost thirty years. Jeffrey Tobias Halter is a keynote speaker, author, and corporate gender strategist. He is the author of WHY WOMEN: The Leadership Imperative for Advancing Women and Engaging Men and the president in YWomen - Corporate Gender Strategy. He is a member of board trustees at The Miss America Organization and a former director of Diversity Strategy in the Coca-Cola company. Jeffrey is already a two-time TEDx speaker. He frequently keynotes at industry and corporate events about women and helping men overcome the barriers to equality in the workplace. He is consulting from a high strategy standpoint, which is also making an impact on organizations. Thus, influencing organizations and their cultures. In this episode, Jeffrey strongly pointed out how you, as a leader in the organization, must reach out on your employees both men and women in separate. This exercise is what he recommends to large corporate clients. “...ask a simple question. Tell me about the experience you're having and do you think it's any different than men in the organization?” According to Jeffrey, invite the woman for a cup of coffee or in virtual and ask her some questions that would address her current situation as a member of the organization. At first, the woman won’t speak up and stand for their rights. But when you continue to reach out on her, you’ll see what she is going through. “...ask again. Is there some experience you're having that I don't understand? Or that I don't see? ” The moment she starts opening up, let her express her emotions. Listen. Don’t interrupt her with what’s on your mind. Don’t try to solve the problem. Just listen. “And then ask a third time. And in that third 10 minutes, you're going to hear root cause issues.” These causes might be from a personal issue or can be existing within the organization. Take note also that everyone will have different answers depending on what circumstances they are facing. Jeffrey mentioned that the most common issue women are facing is how they are being ignored in meetings. Men rarely encounter disparity. “And so this is where a leader says, I want every voice heard... “ Jeffrey also tells organizations to acknowledge introvert men, as well, by giving them some time to contemplate and patiently wait for them to speak up. In this way, they will feel at ease and valued. Jeffrey has tackled many other things to ponder. So, better check it out in the full episode. If we are serious about achieving gender balance in the workplace, we need to make sure that men are actively engaged as partners with women. However, there is some evidence that men are becoming less inclined to support these efforts. Why does it matter? And if it does, why and what can we do about it? Join us for an insightful discussion between Anne Stevens, Council Director at The Conference Board and her guest Graham Sparks, an expert on gender balance and inclusion in the workplace
In this episode of The Forum Podcast, Avivah Wittenberg-Cox (20-first), argues that women alone should not be leading the topic of gender balance in organizations. But how do we engage men and leaders in gender balancing businesses when the topic of gender balance is often framed as being created for women by women, leading to failed engagement by men and accountability by men, or even worse, creating divisive segmentation within men of a, “you're either with us or against us” mentality? Engaging men isn't about getting women to become ever more congratulatory about men who ‘get it.' Getting men to embrace balance requires leaders skilled at making the link between balance and business. When they buy it, and are skilled at selling it, everyone gets on board. Over the past decade, Avivah Wittenberg-Cox, CEO of 20-first, has worked on gender balance with 43 companies, across 32 countries, facilitated 231 debates with over 3,000 executives. She's worked in every possible sector, from finance and energy to tech and consumer goods. Here's what she learned and some of the questions she'll explore: Why is gender balance so often framed as a women's issue, discussed by and among women? How do we engage men and leaders in gender balancing businesses? Where do companies stand today and what's the next step? Learning Outcomes Understand the common pitfalls to avoid and why they remain so popular Introduce the concept of ‘gender bilingualism' as a management competency Outline ways of reframing gender balance more strategically and inclusively Avivah is joined by Tim Hollins, Director and Senior Consultant at 20-first. “Choose to get curious. Go have a coffee with another woman, and another woman, and a person of color, and a millennial. You’re going to start to see that there is in fact inequity in the daily ways people are treated.” - Jeffery Halter As only 29% of senior leadership roles in the workplace are held by women (and that number is the highest on record), it means that the leadership ranks are still dominated by men, and men can be not only a big part of the challenges that are faced in getting our workforce to experience gender equality and pay parity, but also a big part of the solution. Today’s Finding Brave guest is someone who has become a vocal advocate for the advancement of women, and he’s made it his mission to help other men join him in the gender equality movement. Jeffery Tobias Halter is a corporate gender strategist, specializing in engaging men in women’s leadership issues and initiatives. He is the President of YWomen, a strategic consulting company and one of the country’s leading experts on engaging men to advance women. Jeffery’s book WHY WOMEN, The Leadership Imperative to Advancing Women and Engaging Men, is the first business book written by a man on why companies and their leadership teams must create a strategic mindset regarding the retention and advancement of women. He’s the former Director of Diversity Strategy of The Coca-Cola Company and has consulted with leading brands including McDonald’s, Deloitte, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Mercedes-Benz, GE and more. As Jeffery reveals in this episode, we are now at a tipping point to disrupt the status quo to drive gender parity and rid the workplace of gender inequities. Most importantly, it is now up to each one of us to become agents of change to initiate and build workplaces that are safe and equitable for all employees.
