In 1964, the Disney film 'Mary Poppins' was released. It was based on the character created by writer PL Travers.Travers disliked the Oscar-winning Disney production so much, that she never allowed any more Mary Poppins books to be adapted into films. In 2018, Vincent Dowd spoke to Brian Sibley and Kitty Travers about their memories of PL Travers.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke in the film Mary Poppins. Chelsea Plumley stars as ‘Miss Andrew', the evil Nanny brought into the Banks household, in Mary Poppins the musical. Chelsea talks in detail about her craft and unpacks her acting process into bringing this character to life onstage. Chelsea is a five-time Greenroom Award nominee and has an extensive career across stage and TV (in contrast we talk about her previous role in Muriel's Wedding the musical) and this is a great interview for any Mary Poppins fan, as Chelsea also references the character in the books by PL Travers, her song (by Stiles and Drewe) and more.
With the Mary Poppins musical opening in Sydney, I travelled to Bowral NSW, where over a hundred years ago, the author PL Travers OBE (Helen Lyndon Goff) moved with her mother and two young sisters, after the death of their father. Extensive research has uncovered Bowral as the birthplace of the character 'Mary Poppins', providing a lot of inspiration for her books. Local historian Paul McShane, along with his daughter campaigned to have a special statue made, that twice a year magically turns so Mary can catch the East wind - We speak in front of the statue (we get to see it turn) and we visit her home in Bowral. Also what are the connections with fellow Bowral resident, cricketer Sir Donald Bradman? This is a podcast not to be missed! Check our youtube and social pages for more content that can't be missed.
Episode Notes Tom is Walt, and Emma is PL...Pamela...Pam...Helen? Walt Disney made a promise to his kids to adapt the books of PL Travers, PL Travers does not like what Disney does, hilarity ensues. Darren talks to Disney fans (the product, not the guy) Andrew and Kestra Darowski about Saving Mr Banks, Mr Goff and Mrs.

You want to make characters that people believe in and care for, so how can you create depth for the personalities that make up your novel or creative writing piece? Jenni and Marc look at the different games and situations that you can use with your characters to make them well rounded, interesting people that your readers want to get excited about. Episode 32: Saving Mr Banks. We pick apart the charming drama of 2013’s movie, starring Emma Thompson as PL Travers, the author of Mary Poppins and Tom Hanks as Walt Disney, enthusiastically pursuing the movie rights to the book and the conflicts that this deal brought. Juxtaposed with some pathos provided by scenes of PL Travers’ childhood, this humorous movie was made by the Disney Corporation so was it a PR exercise or did they get gritty with the truth?
Caroline hosts the wonderful Margot Adler, and her fantabulous new book, “Vampires Are Us – Understanding Our Love Affair with the Immortal Dark Side.” We KPFA/KPFK be in Fund Drive during this show.
