Adam and Scott get together to chat about the latest news in the Arsenal world. That of course, means we get to chat about the injury to Gabriel Magalhães.* How does the club cope with him out?* Is it Kiwor next man up or something more exotic?* How much blame does the club have for this and the other hamstring injuries?Hamstring Injuries in context:Arsenal are a bit above average (3.8 and 3.5 median) this season with there 5 total injuries. 3 of Arsenal's have been to the level that they decided to go to surgery but it is one of those where we can't really say with confidence that these were grade 2 or 3 injuries here. Then, there is the other big news with fresh links to Viktor Gyökeres. This has been a more divisive link than many I remember in recent times and that means it makes for excellent fodder for conversation. He has been a topic of our writing previously, which is linked here:The big topics here are about the relative quality of the Portuguese League and how that translates for a player like Gyökeres, because there is no doubt that what he has done there is mighty impressive. The major part here is that the difference between the top teams in Portugal and England is noticeable but it really drops off after you get past the top 4 teams. Elo ratings aren't perfect here (they are also backed up by the Opta team ratings) but it is one of those things where the level is much closer to the Championship than the Premier League. This is backed up by the wages that these teams have as well. Sporting laps the League with what they can pay and then it drops quickly. These are sums that are less than most teams in the Championship.Viktor Gyökeres goals against the top Portuguese teams (in the league): Benfica - 270 minutes, 1 goal Porto - 247 minutes, 4 goals (1 penalty)Braga - 263 minutes, 1 goal 0.58 Non-penalty goals over 8.7 90s played. This dosen't mean that players can't translate from Portugal to the Premier League; I think it just means that it is important to have more skepticism about what the numbers mean and to have larger error bars with an expectation is adjusted down. Here is how the adjusted numbers look compared to Havertz:Thank you for listening! This is a public episode. After the International break Mister Benfica is back in your podcast players with Episode 157. We start the show with another rant that some how turned into another rallying cry against the Centralization of TV rights to just sustain clubs with SAD's that are completely incompetent and why we need to stop thinking the Portuguese League is Top 6 when 2 years later we haven't seen a Portuguese team even get into the Europa Conference League Group Stage. Then we spend some time on the Women's Team and the record crowd at the Luz last weekend even though the result didn't go our way and why fans need to fill the Aveiro Stadium for this Saturday's League Cup Final against Braga and help the girls get the momentum to wrap up the #LigaBPI title in the coming weeks and start getting some of the girls from rest before the end of the season and looming Women's World Cup. Lastly I'll look back at the 5-1 win in Round 25 of the #LigaPortugalBwin over Vitoria SC and look ahead to Rio Ave at their dilapidated stadium this weekend and a quick recap of the "B" team's win over Oliveirense and look ahead to the next few matches in #LigaSabseg. First up, Jan talks to us about Scandinavian and Norwegian football, fantasy football and betting culture in Norway. I was astounded to learn that over 2% of the Norwegian population (5 Million) play Fantasy Premier League! What an insane stat that is. I didn't get Jan on just to speak about Norway though..the first player we discussed was Gelson Martins. The Sporting winger has had another solid season in Portugal and it may very well be the summer he decides to find himself a fresh challenge. His massive buyout clause may put suitors off, however with tensions rising between Bruno de Carvalho, the supporters and the Sporting players- there's a good chance we could see a mass exodus from the Lisbon club. Next up, Andrija Živković was on the agenda. The young Serbian has earned rave reviews from scouts around the world and papers have already linked him to Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United and a plethora of other clubs. But will it be better for his development to stay at Benfica for one more season? Why hasn't he played that regularly this season? Would a breakout World Cup see the chances of a big club coughing up the €60 million needed to activate his buyout clause? Jan answers all these questions and more. Alex Telles, dubbed the assist king in Portugal seemed on his way to Chelsea at one point. Those rumours have recently dissipated, but Jan reckons it won't be long until they surface again. Especially as he's available for €30 million, which could look like a bargain if he performs to the level he's capable of. Next, I ask Jan why Portuguese teams aren't as competitive as years gone by in Europe. The short answer was simple; Economic power. Jan talked us through why teams like Porto, Benfica and Sporting haven't made an impact in either the Europa or Champions league respectively in recent years. Bruno is a player that has raised a few eyebrows across Europe. The talented and versatile midfielder has been linked to Monaco and a few other big European clubs already. Jan was ready and willing to give us the low down on yet another talented Portuguese youngster. This tied in quite nicely into the next section, which was all about one Shoya Nakajima. Dubbed the Japanese Messi, the Portimonense man has tallied up double figures in goals and assists this season, incredibly impressive. Jan adores the tricky forward, and thinks it's inevitable that a big club come calling sooner rather than later.. Someone who's dominated the British press recently is Anderson Talisca. After rumours surfaced that Besiktas would not take up their option to buy, which were then later confirmed by their President-Index traders jumped on the Brazilian midfielder, and he saw a monumental rise. Jan talks about Anderson's troublesome time at Benfica, but also about how much he's improved at Besiktas. Benfica's talent pool is seemingly never ending, and Alejandro Grimaldo is another name that keeps cropping up. Is he really set to move to Naples? Or is there a chance a English club take a punt on the talented left-back? Last, but most certainly not least- we talked about the best player in Portugal at the moment: Bruno . Surely the talented midfielder won't be at Sporting next season? Especially with no Champions League football...Jan raves about the Bruno, and seemed excited to watch him play at the World Cup. A big move is surely in the offing soon.... If you did enjoy this, please do subscribe- and leave a review! THE RECAP Sporting CP wins its first ever Taça da Liga against Vitoria de Setubal in a very hard fought 1-1 match which ended up going to a penalty shootout. Porto and Benfica both come up with draws as the tail end of the 20th jornada comes to a close, with Sporting set to play Vitoria de Guimarães today (Wednesday, January 31). Real Madrid remain shaky as they lose to Leganes in the Copa del Rey (2-2 agg.) by away goal rule, knocking them out of the tournament.   THE DISCUSSION Today's topic is centered around the question, whether it is more beneficial to build players through a youth academy, or to purchase already developed players in the transfer market. Smaller teams usually decide to develop their youth squads because they lack the funds to purchase developed players, which at times can be very expensive. Benefits to having an academy for developing players include: Cheaper initial investment Potential for greater returns The player grows up learning the teams tactics and schemes Easier integration up to the A squad Most big teams, (Real Madrid, Manchester City, PSG, etc.) have the ability to spend a lot of money in order to transfer the players they want. Also, since they are playing at higher levels, and are expected to perform at their peak year round, it is more beneficial to them to purchase players who have that type of experience. Benefits to purchasing players include: Player is used to playing at a high caliber Skills are fully, or near fully, developed Teams can look for certain characteristics that players exhibit A squad ready Cons to developing players: Uncertainty in the youth's future Player wanting to leave because of lack of accomplishment (winning leagues/titles/etc.) Cons to purchasing players: May not integrate well with new systems/players Expensive   LOOKING AHEAD In the Portuguese League, Porto and Braga are set to meet at Estádio do Dragão on Saturday, February 3rd. The same day, Benfica faces Rio Ave at home. In the Copa del Rey, Sevilla take on Leganes today (January 31), and Barcelona host Valencia on February 1 to finish out the first leg of the semi-final.   THIS DAY IN SOCCER HISTORY January 25, 1942, Portuguese soccer legend Eusébio is born. Nicknamed the Black Panther, Eusébio is a famed soccer legend who played for SL Benfica and the Portuguese National team, winning 2 European Cups, 11 Primeira Liga titles, 5 Taças de Portugal, led Portugal to the semi-finals of the 1966 World Cup and score 621 goals for both club and country.   CONNECT WITH US Comment on the shownotes Email feedback@442pod.com Subscribe to the 442 Podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher or TuneIn Radio Follow us on Twitter @442pod Follow us individually @josephrocha42 and @oneunitedxvii Leave us a rating/review
