Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast! In this episode, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time to chat Vancouver Whitecaps, Vancouver Rise, Vancouver FC and Pacific FC. To begin, they dive into the latest out of the Whitecaps, who have continued their red-hot start to the 2025 season over the past few weeks. First, in the Concacaf Champions Cup, they managed to defeat Inter Miami 5-1 on aggregate across two legs in the semi-finals of that tournament, allowing them to reach the final for the first time. Now, they'll play a Cruz Azul team that has been in excellent form in this competition, of which they're one of the winningest teams historically, in what should be a fantastic final between two fun teams to watch. Meanwhile, in MLS play, the Whitecaps are also continuing to cruise, as they still sit atop MLS's Supporters Shield standings, having continued to pick up big results in league play despite juggling their CCC responsibilities. Now, things don't get any easier for the Whitecaps, who have three MLS matches and one Canadian Championship clash to deal with before the CCC final, but based on how they've been playing, they'll just try to keep the good times rolling as they get set to tackle a crucial three-week period. Elsewhere, the BC Canadian Premier League teams have been off to mixed starts to their campaigns, with Vancouver FC now finding their feet in league play after a slow start, while Pacific is looking to recover after a strong start turned into a mini-slump. So far, Vancouver has the edge between these two teams, especially after defeating Pacific in the preliminary round of the Canadian Championship, something they hope gives them momentum going forward, but Pacific will be pleased they bounced back from that VFC loss with a big home win vs. York United days later. Lastly, the Vancouver Rise have continued their start to their inaugural campaign, sitting second in the NSL standings through four matches. Despite that, they've got plenty to work on, especially offensively, although they'll be pleased with how organized they've been defensively, giving them a good base to build on as they look to find more goals going forward. We recap this past weekend's soccer action for Calgary based teams in this episode. The Calgary Wild finished up their long road trip at York Lions Stadium where they faced AFC Toronto. One day later, Cavalry FC stepped onto the same pitch to play York United with a better final result. League One Alberta saw four matches happen on Friday evening, including two matches in Calgary. We talk about Foothills, Callies, Villains and Blizzard. Some familiar faces appeared on the scoresheet for Cavalry U21's. And the Calgary Wild U21 team had a League One debut they'd probably prefer to forget.Subscribe to our Substack or follow us on Twitter/X or on Instagram or Bluesky. Our website is yycsoccer.com

Send us a textA huge victory in Vancouver last Friday steadies the ship for The Nine Stripes and with six regular season games remaining, the battle for the title is intensifying! It was an unlikely lad - Nyal Higgins, who has been superb since returning to the lineup in the draw with Forge a few weeks ago - who grabbed the game-winning goal after just four minutes, as the team dug deep to keep a crucial clean-sheet. That was despite losing centre-back Noah Abatneh early in the first half due to injury and Elijah Adekugbe forced to drop deep. It was a fifth shut-out of the season for goalkeeper Thomas Vincensini, who was also named Allstate Goalkeeper of the Month this week: the second time he's claimed the award this term. We get the post-game thoughts of Head Coach Benjamín Mora and Elijah Adekugbe, while OneSoccer's Adam Jenkins joins in the second half of the show to run the rule over York United's championship credentials and the new-found optimism at the club this season.Produced by York United Football Club.First broadcast on Sauga960AM on September 11th, 2024. Send us a Text Message. There was some slight disappointment in the team's last outing as Cavalry FC came to town and played the role of party poopers to perfection. The 2-1 defeat was a competitive battle, and despite The Nine Stripes laying siege to the Cavs goal for the final twenty minutes, they couldn't find that elusive equalizer. Still, Head Coach Benjamín Mora remained defiant in the aftermath of the game, telling reporters that one result would not define the recent successes. We hear from him in this episode, and from Max Ferrari too - who celebrated his 100th appearance for the club. A special achievement for him, and Brian Wright also, who racked up his 100th game for a Canadian Premier League team. Our special guest this week is CanPL.ca's Charlie O'Connor-Clarke, who takes some time to recognize the contributions made to the league by those two players in recent years. He also goes in-depth on York United's form under Mora, and the crucial upcoming derby clash with Forge FC. And listeners can grab some tickets for that game on Friday, August 23rd. On this episode of the CPL Newsroom, presented by Volkswagen, Charlie O'Connor-Clarke and Mitchell Tierney break down all four matches from a busy weekend. Cavalry beat York United to pick up their fourth win in a row, Ottawa dominated Pacific FC in Langford, and Valour continued their playoff push with a win over Halifax at home. Forge moved to the top of the table on Sunday with a victory over Vancouver FC for their second win of the week, after beating Halifax on Wednesday as well. Send us a Text Message. What a gritty and hard-fought win on the road last weekend against Valour FC in Winnipeg. It was a tense battle and scoreless , and when Thomas Vincensini make a dramatic penalty save in the second-half, The Nine Stripes were still in the fight. With the game in the balance, Head Coach Benjamín Mora made an attacking switch and brought Austin Ricci off the bench. And it proved an astute move. When Vincensini pulled a cross out of the sky and found Babouli with a quick throw, the counter attack was very much on. Just nine seconds later, the ball was in the back of the net as Ricci tapped home from Brian Wright's precise pass. The three points saw York jump to the top of the table and after 10 games under Mora, the team carries some big dreams. After some post-game reaction from Winnipeg, Eoin sits down with Mora to discuss the campaign so far and just how his process and identity is transferring to the squad. Send us a Text Message. The trip to Vancouver FC proved slightly frustrating as The Nine Stripes seemed set for a solid away win after Mo Babouli netted once again early in the second half. But, in what was a tight and tense contest, York United surprisingly conceded a last-gasp equalizer and the game finished 1-1. Still, they brought a hard-earned point to Toronto after gruelling back-to-back trips to the other side of the country. We get the thoughts of midfielder Elijah Adekugbe and Head Coach Benjamin Mora, while Mitchell Tierney, a long-time CPL reporter and consistently insightful voice on the domestic game, drops by to chat all things Nine Stripes and why this is the best iteration of the team he's ever seen.Produced by York United Football Club.First broadcast on Sauga960AM on July 24th, 2024. On this episode of the CPL Newsroom presented by Volkswagen, Charlie O'Connor-Clarke and Mitchell Tierney break down all the action from week 18 of the 2024 Canadian Premier League season! York United moved to the top of the table with their win over Valour and Atlético Ottawa's blowout loss against Forge, Cavalry rejoined the CPL Shield conversation with a win at home against Halifax, and there's frustration at Pacific FC after losing again to rivals Vancouver FC to remain on the outside looking in of the playoff picture. Some footage used is courtesy of OneSoccer, home of all Canadian Premier League matches.
Send us a Text Message. The run continues! Six games in charge for Benjamín Mora and there's been four wins and one draw. The latest victory came in the notoriously difficult surroundings of ATCO Field in Calgary where The Nine Stripes conjured just their second ever win in 12 visits thanks to a magnificent free-kick from Mo Babouli and a first ever professional goal from 16-year-old Shola Jimoh, who became the second-youngest CPL goalscorer in history when he tapped home following Brian Wright's superb dazzling dribble and perfect cross. The three points consolidated second place in the table and kept momentum going ahead of another road assignment this weekend in Vancouver. We hear from Babouli, Jimoh and Max Ferrari while Mora sits down for a big conversation with host Eoin O'Callaghan to discuss the recent results, how the process is all coming together and sheds some light on the club's new mystery signing. Send us a Text Message. It's been an impressive run since Benjamín Mora took over as York United FC boss: five games, just one defeat. The latest victory came against Halifax Wanderers at York Lions Stadium last weekend: the team's fifth on home soil in the 2024 campaign. In the process, The Nine Stripes have climbed to second in the Canadian Premier League table and can proudly boast of possessing the best home record of any Toronto sports team right now - better than the Argos, way better than the Blue Jays and way, way better than Toronto FC. Eoin O'Callaghan looks back on the 2-1 win with analysis from Mora and midfielder Juan Cordova, who grabbed his second of the season against the Wanderers. Eoin also chats to GM/President Ricardo Pasquel about the recent high-profile announcement of an official partnership with the iconic Club de Futbol Monterrey of Liga MX. There was a little break from the show last week due to a Wednesday cup clash with the club's nearest and dearest rivals Forge FC but host Eoin O'Callaghan is back to review a busy stretch of action. The trip to Hamilton proved a disappointing experience as The Nine Stripes were left dazed and confused by an astonishing first half that ultimately cost them dearly. Despite a solid fightback after the break and a first goal for the club for midfielder Josue Martinez, the 3-1 defeat meant elimination from the tournament. We get the thoughts of Martin Nash and Elijah Adekugbe before delving into the trip to Victoria last weekend as the team attempted to rebound with their second league win of the season. However, it proved another frustrating game and the 2-0 loss led to some strong words from Nash post-game, while defender Frank Sturing spoke at length about the performance.Later in the show, Eoin is joined by Mitchell Tierney from CanPL.ca to discuss York's recent performances, the players that have settled in well this season and Friday's huge battle with Valour FC at York Lions Stadium.Produced by York United Football Club.First broadcast on Sauga960AM on May 8th, 2024.
