Hamstrings are crucial for speed and injury prevention. The anatomy of hamstrings is complex and specialized. Biceps femoris long head is the most commonly injured hamstring. Fatigue significantly alters movement patterns and injury risk. Different sports have varying rates of hamstring injuries. Proximal injuries are more common than distal injuries. Effective rehabilitation requires understanding of hamstring function. Training should focus on both hip and knee movements. Range of motion is key for optimal performance. Knee-over-hip movement targets specific hamstring muscles. Nordics are effective for hamstring injury prevention. Trunk control is vital for efficient hamstring function. Thorough hamstring development addresses all muscle groups. Hamstrings may require different training strategies based on fiber type. Acceleration plays a significant role in hamstring rehabilitation. Strength training should focus on a large range of motion. Sled training can enhance sprinting performance. Eccentric overload studies are needed for better understanding. Practical application in training is crucial for athletes.   Linktree: https://linktr.ee/r5.johan?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAacrLUbPVowp-fLmXuiL24aEhLAbiDybz36SPGRE1B5OGUQazY4BMcIuIcmP6A_aem_v59RXN2FxyxAgIMsNZpAmQ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/r5.johan/?hl=en Twitter: https://x.com/lahti_johan Notes: https://jackedathlete.com/podcast-141-hamstrings-and-hamstring-tendons-with-johan-lahti/

Adam and Scott get together to chat about the latest news in the Arsenal world. That of course, means we get to chat about the injury to Gabriel Magalhães.* How does the club cope with him out?* Is it Kiwor next man up or something more exotic?* How much blame does the club have for this and the other hamstring injuries?Hamstring Injuries in context:Arsenal are a bit above average (3.8 and 3.5 median) this season with there 5 total injuries. 3 of Arsenal's have been to the level that they decided to go to surgery but it is one of those where we can't really say with confidence that these were grade 2 or 3 injuries here. Then, there is the other big news with fresh links to Viktor Gyökeres. This has been a more divisive link than many I remember in recent times and that means it makes for excellent fodder for conversation. He has been a topic of our writing previously, which is linked here:The big topics here are about the relative quality of the Portuguese League and how that translates for a player like Gyökeres, because there is no doubt that what he has done there is mighty impressive. The major part here is that the difference between the top teams in Portugal and England is noticeable but it really drops off after you get past the top 4 teams. Elo ratings aren't perfect here (they are also backed up by the Opta team ratings) but it is one of those things where the level is much closer to the Championship than the Premier League. This is backed up by the wages that these teams have as well. Sporting laps the League with what they can pay and then it drops quickly. These are sums that are less than most teams in the Championship.Viktor Gyökeres goals against the top Portuguese teams (in the league): Benfica - 270 minutes, 1 goal Porto - 247 minutes, 4 goals (1 penalty)Braga - 263 minutes, 1 goal 0.58 Non-penalty goals over 8.7 90s played. This dosen't mean that players can't translate from Portugal to the Premier League; I think it just means that it is important to have more skepticism about what the numbers mean and to have larger error bars with an expectation is adjusted down. Here is how the adjusted numbers look compared to Havertz:Thank you for listening! This is a public episode. Today we're discussing hamstring injuries. We frequently see injuries to the hamstring muscles and tendons due to heel hooks and splits, and whilst hamstring injuries have gotten a lot of attention in other sports, like soccer, sprint and dancing, there's a paucity of literature covering this injury in climbers. Since climbing differs from these sports, the injury mechanisms, rehabilitation and exercise selection also differs. Today's talk will cover these subjects, as well as we've interviewed top level climber Tina Johnsen Hafsaas about her own hamstring injury which occurred during the World Championship in Moscow in 2021. ReferencesEhiogu, U. There have been 6000 papers published about hamstring injuries The research is all over the place. The only real consensus is Nordic hamstring curls We start with NSAIDs The next day we start with movement COMPEX Ankle movement Heel slides As soon as they can walk pain-free we get them back on the field We use short lever arm exercises We use Catapult for GPS data and can help know when our players are working within a safe range. If it is a larger injury, how do you talk them through the mental aspect? Know your athlete Communicate with all of the stakeholders Athlete Coach Mom and dad 0-80% is easy, but 80-100% is the really hard part. Educate them on some of the options: PRP, Cryo, …anything that will help them feel better. Mentally they are prepared, physically they are not. How do we reduce the recurrence of injury? The first two weeks are most commonly the time frame for reinjury Repeat the exposure incident over and over again. I like to have them sprint over and over again. How do we recreate sprinting for the kids that can not? We want to train on the speed-strength continuum as much as possible Gymaware is the bar speed program we use. In this episode of the podcast I discuss hamstring injuries as well as  what should be included in a prehab or prevention program. Recurring hamstring injuries are one of the most common complaints of field sport athletes. Once injured, if not taken care of, you can find yourself spending the majority of the season out rehabbing the same injury. Although it is difficult to completely prevent any injury, it is possible to significantly reduce the risk of reinjury. In this episode of the podcast I discuss why hamstring injuries are so common, what teams are doing wrong and how they may be increasing risk as well as how you can reduce risk of injury in season.

This is a podcast by Dr Robert-Jan de Vos, sports physician in the Erasmus Medical Centre in the Netherlands, with Guustaaf Reurink, who is a registrar in Sports medicine in the Netherlands and is currently finishing his thesis on diagnosis and treatment of acute hamstring injuries. Recently, he published a paper in the New England Journal of Medicine about the role of Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) treatment for acute hamstring injuries (http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc1402340). We start with discussing this interesting study, which did not show a benefit of PRP injections in acute hamstring injuries. Dr Reurink expresses the methods and results of this study and possible explanations for these findings are debated. Dr Reurink also performed a number of studies on the value of clinical tests and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in acute hamstring injuries. Previously, he already showed that most MRIs are still abnormal when the athlete already returned to gameplay (http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/early/2013/11/19/bjsports-2013-092450.abstract?eaf). We close by discussing the role of MRI and standardised clinical tests as a predictor of time to return to play and re-injury.

Hamstring injuries are the most prevalent muscle injuries in sport. Symptoms can be particularly prolonged, healing response poor, and the risk of re-injury high. Carl Askling (Karolinska Institute, Stockholm) has been trialling a new way of categorising these injuries, thinking about them as high-speed running or stretching types. He explains to Karim Khan how these types can be diagnosed and the different treatment and monitoring they require. He also describes how to assess athletes post hamstring injury for return to sport.
