It's our first podcast since the calamities of Bilbao, and we're not just talking about the football. Who is responsible for the series of events which led to leaving hundreds, maybe thousands, of fans stranded in a city that had essentially closed for business?Ruben Amorim's future had even seemed up in the air after that game, but it seems he has been reassured of his future by Manchester United's execs. He used the authority lent him by this vote of confidence to give Alejandro Garnacho marching orders. The Argentinian winger, and his entourage, were publicly critical of the head coach, which appears to have crossed a line. Fan reaction was mixed. The team went on to play Champions League chasers Aston Villa on Sunday before jetting off to Asia. The clean sheet and comfortable victory at Old Trafford was met with raised eyebrows as much as anything else, but Amorim addressed the crowd to a positive reaction... Now for the difficult part. Originally released several months ago for super-listeners. This is the sort of episode you get as part of being a listener as well as a lot of others as well as ad free listening and much more. Sign up here: https://www.patreon.com/c/Footballforkids In this episode of the Football for Kids Podcast, I take a look at the career so far of Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho. Born in Madrid to an Argentine mother and Spanish father, Garnacho was always likely to be influenced by both footballing cultures. I go back to his early days at Getafe and Atlético Madrid, and follow his move to Manchester United's youth academy. A standout goal in the FA Youth Cup caught attention, and not long after, he made his senior debut at just 17 years old. I also talk through some of Garnacho's big moments, including a memorable bicycle kick against Everton, and the role he's played under manager Erik ten Hag. With over 100 appearances already, he's made a strong start to his career. There's more to come from Garnacho, but here's where it all began. Learn more about your ad choices. A chastening 4-1 defeat away at Newcastle is not a result that anyone at Manchester United would want to consider acceptable, nor do they. But, perhaps there are more important things to worry about right now... as Andre Onana may testify. In fact, there were one or two little glimpses of positivity: Garnacho's excellent finish and the move that led to his equaliser, as well as Harry Amass's performance on Premier League debut. However, Joshua Zirkzee might not want to face Newcastle again in a hurry; his hamstring injury counts as a blow as Ruben Amorim's main objective, progress in the Europa League, looms large. The Truth: Have Manchester United Got Worse Under Ruben Amorim?

It's time for The Truth!Dougie's back in business with Sam after a well-earned week off and it's a return with a bang as we turn our attention to Manchester United - always a behemoth of a topic, who are currently seemingly locked inside a battle with themselves. After a dreary start to 2025, questions are being asked of Ruben Amorim's stewardship, and if United have actually got worse since he took over. Now, to be fair, Amorim himself said when he took the job that things were going to get worse before they got better, but much of the fanbase was expecting more of an uptick in form five months in than what we've seen on the pitch, especially after defeat to Fulham in the FA Cup wiped out one of the two remaining options that United had for silverware this campaign. But is that criticism fair? Amorim has struggled to get this squad ticking, but there are mitigating factors - the players are taking some time to adapt to his system (those that can), whilst the most impactful players in this squad have been struck down by injuries just as things were taking an upturn for them. Is that enough though, to absolve him of fault? Should United ride out this storm, trust in their new manager and try to build something long term? Or have we already seen enough to suggest that this isn't going to work and that a change is needed before United get bogged down in another cycle not going anywhere? Well, The Truth is somewhere in the middle... And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
