Today's Saturday episode covers seven stories. Lead with Rodri pushing to join Real Madrid from Manchester City — the World Cup winner is in the final year of his contract, Madrid are preparing a bid up to £100m, and every source says the move is gathering momentum even while both clubs play it cool. Second story: Arsenal chase Atlético's Julián Álvarez and are reportedly willing to offer cash plus Viktor Gyökeres, a massive bid that could define the window. Third story: Real Madrid also bid €100m for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomandé as Madrid spend big post-World Cup. Fourth story: Chelsea send Alejandro Garnacho on loan to Aston Villa after links across Europe. Fifth story: Crysencio Summerville joins Al Hilal for €76m, another Premier League talent heading to Saudi Arabia. Sixth story: Barcelona unveil a black and violet second kit tied to a Kobe Bryant collection. Closer: preseason is here — Liverpool face Sunderland in Nashville today as the club calendar spins back up.Subscribe for Premier League, MLS & Champions League coverage.AI was used for news gathering and production assistance.#Rodri #RealMadrid #ManchesterCity #Arsenal #Alvarez #Gyokeres #Diomande #RBLeipzig #Garnacho #AstonVilla #Chelsea #Summerville #AlHilal #Barcelona #Kobe #Liverpool #Sunderland #Preseason #WorldCup2026 #Football #Soccer #CalorogaSharkMediaAI gave us an assist in the creation of today's podcast, but the hat trick is our own.

£117m and Still No Center Back: The Morgan Rogers Signing (and Farewell, Anthony Taylor)

Red White and The Blues: A Chelsea FC Podcast

Red, White & Blues FC | £117m for Morgan Rogers and a Rumor Mill Gone FeralChelsea break the Premier League transfer record, ship Garnacho off to Villa, and get linked to roughly half of Europe — and we're cynical about most of it.Transfer season is here, and Daniel opened the show by torturing Jason all day with an all-caps text promising a “big surprise announcement” that had nothing to do with transfers. The payoff: bald fraud Anthony Taylor is retiring, and we will never have to watch him officiate a Chelsea match again. From there it's a genuinely wild 48–72 hours of business — one record signing, one loan exit, and a rumor list long enough to need its own spreadsheet. We're happy, we're skeptical, and we're bracing for the moment BlueCo inevitably breaks our hearts again.Anthony Taylor Rides Off — and No, We're Not “Delusional”We saw The Athletic's framing coming: fans piling on Taylor at retirement supposedly proves how “delusional” supporters are about referees. We push back hard. We're not anti-referee — we know it's a brutal job, the gear, the whining twenty-somethings surrounding you every match. We're anti-Premier League referees, and we are 1,000% anti-Anthony Taylor specifically. The only bittersweet part is we'll never get to hear that Chelsea terrace chant about him again.Morgan Rogers for £117m — Record Signing, Familiar DoubtsThe big one: Morgan Rogers joins from Aston Villa for a reported £117m, a new Premier League record, on a six-plus-one. The Xabi Alonso “pull” narrative is everywhere — a phone call, Cole Palmer's friendship, Chelsea being Chelsea — and this is where Daniel and Jason go back and forth. Daniel refuses to swallow the “Chubby wanted him so Chubby got him” line whole, pointing out we heard the exact same thing about Maresca and Pochettino. Yes, a serious manager helps recruitment; no, it doesn't explain everything, and the round-table “Knights of Chelsea” mythology (with Eghbali cast as King Arthur) is media hype. Both of us land in the same place: Rogers is a good player, 23, on sensible wages, fitting the buy-young-sell-high model — but we overpaid, and we don't actually know where he fits. Double tens? Wing? Wing-back under Alonso? Nobody's sure. The Money Doesn't Add Up — and the Defense Pays for ItWe dig into the We Ain't Got No History math floating around: the Rogers fee roughly equals what Chelsea banked from Cucurella, Andrey Santos, Tyrique George, Jimmy-Jay Morgan, and the Maresca compensation. We both flag the same flaw — those are gross numbers, and we were still paying wages on most of them, so the “we basically got Rogers for free” spin doesn't hold. What's undeniable is Chelsea sell better than anyone (£400m+ shifted, largely pure-profit academy kids), which is how the spending happens. But Jason's frustration is the through-line of the whole episode: for the same £117m, Chelsea could have had a center back and a goalkeeper. Instead it's another attacker, and the back line is in the lurch again. And, oh yeah — still no front-of-shirt sponsor, four years running, £200m+ left on the table.Garnacho Out, and the Great Rumor AvalancheGarnacho heads to Villa on loan with a soft, appearance-based option around £43m — meaning Chelsea might somehow turn a profit on a player nobody wanted. Good riddance and good luck; Villa's own subreddit is bracing for another reclamation project (”if Unai Emery can't fix him, no one can”). Then we speed-run the rumor mill: Maxence Lacroix inching closer (but don't get fooled, we've seen Chelsea put all their marbles in one basket before), Nico possibly reuniting with Emery, Bruno Guimarães as a possible Arsenal hijack, Enzo Fernández linked to Atlético and quietly to City, and the one that actually excites us — Cristian Romero from Spurs in a swap that offloads Neto. We've begged for years for a proper asshole in this squad; Romero, red cards and all, might finally be our asshole. Add Alex Scott, Adam Wharton, Illia Zabarnyi, Eduardo Camavinga, and a Bosnian teenage winger (Kerim Alajbegović) to the pile, and Fabrizio Romano is teasing a “Da Bomba” midfield transfer that's almost certainly just a name we've already heard. We close on Morgan Rogers one more time, on our own cynicism, and on the quiet hope — dangerous as it is — that this time it actually works. This is a public episode. The tingles are back. Chelsea just dropped £117m on Morgan Rogers, prised from under Arsenal's nose, and suddenly a squad still recovering from 10th place feels like one building something real. Chris and Joe run through the incomings — Rogers, a possible John Stones reunion, Lacroix closing in from Palace — and the outgoings, with Nicolas Jackson splitting opinion, Garnacho definitely not, and Enzo Fernández's future still in doubt. They map out Xabi Alonso's likely shape too, 3-4-3 or 4-2-3-1, and ask what a front four of Rogers, Palmer, Estêvão and Joao Pedro actually means for teams sitting deep. _____________________________________ * Support the Show * Write us a 5 star review Follow the show on Instagram Share it with a fellow Chelsea fan _____________________________________ * Meet the Hosts * Chris Sheen and Joe Kevin are lifelong Chelsea fans who've been going to Stamford Bridge for over 30 years. The World Cup semifinal bracket is set, and Ted and Hayden Van Brewer break down both matchups along with a full slate of transfer news. They dig into whether France vs Spain risks being a dull one, and why Spain might need to abandon their usual patient build-up for something more end-to-end. Then it's England vs Argentina, where the Arsenal comparison from earlier in the week gets fully explored: an England side that suffers defensively, struggles to control games, and may need Reece James's fitness gamble to pay off if they want to deny Argentina the ball and neutralise Messi. On the transfer side: Barcelona's low-cost move for Karim Adeyemi, Chelsea's crowded winger situation and Garnacho's uncertain next step, Liverpool bringing in a more traditional six, and Manchester United's Tielemans and Andre Santos double-signing to rebuild their midfield. Unearth the hidden gems of the beer world and claim your free case here: www.beer52.com/ANALYTICS This week on The West Ham Breakdown, Jack and Cal dissect a gutting 3-2 defeat for West Ham against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, despite dominating for the opening 50 minutes of the game. We break down how Aaron Wan-Bissaka neutralised Garnacho and how the specific roles of Hato and Gusto allowed the Hammers to funnel the game exactly where they wanted it. However, we debate whether the second-half collapse was a simple failure of mentality or if Chelsea's substitutions exposed a fundamental gap in squad depth. We debate the tactical changes that forced West Ham back, investigating why Nuno Espirito Santo sacrificed transitional threat to survive a 3-1-6 onslaught. The episode explores the merits of a 5-2-3 setup to protect the last line, questioning if we were destined to buckle under the pressure of seven men crashing the box. Finally, we tackle the goals and refereeing flashpoints, from the Jean-Clair Todibo red card to the Jarrod Bowen penalty shout. Episode 162 — Advantage Arsenal: Narrow First Leg Win After a Dominant Performance at Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup Semi-FinalThe boys are back as Gav, Ells and special guest JJ react to Arsenal's first-leg victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup semi-final — a night that delivered control, chances, and a narrow advantage that perhaps didn't reflect the balance of play. The discussion begins with Arsenal's approach to the tie, including selection choices, goalkeeper debate, and how the team set the tone early. With Arsenal dominating large stretches of the first half, the panel explore why a strong performance failed to translate into a more commanding scoreline, touching on chance creation, shot selection, and decision-making in key moments. There's detailed analysis of Arsenal's midfield structure and evolving roles, including how balance, chemistry, and positioning continue to develop as personnel return from injury. The conversation also examines set-piece execution, attacking movement, and what different striker profiles bring to Arsenal's play — particularly in moments where control needs to become separation.Defensively, the episode breaks down the goals conceded, game management in knockout football, and how small errors can shift momentum even during dominant spells. Goalkeeper involvement, box control, and recovery actions are all discussed as Arsenal once again navigate fine margins in a semi-final setting. In the second half, focus turns forward. The panel preview Arsenal's upcoming trip to Nottingham Forest, discussing defensive availability, workload management, and how Arsenal should approach a fixture shaped as much by desperation as quality. There's also discussion around key Premier League matches elsewhere, including the Manchester derby and Tottenham vs West Ham, and what those results could mean in the wider title picture. The episode closes with the Who Am I? game, featuring a former Arsenal forward whose career took him across Europe — and prompts a few nostalgic reflections along the way.A first-leg advantage secured, questions still to answer, and a season entering a defining stretch.Chapters:(00:00) - Arteta's Non-Negotiables Intro(00:50) - Chelsea Semi-Final Context & Selection Decisions(02:35) - Goalkeeper Debate: Structure, Crosses & Build-Up Play(04:20) - Fast Start & Early Pressure at Stamford Bridge(05:06) - 0-1 | Set-Piece Breakthrough and Corner Execution(07:12) - Missed Chances & Shot Selection Frustrations(11:41) - Midfield Balance, Roles & Chemistry Questions(16:49) - First-Half Control Without Separation(18:12) - 0-2 | Gyökeres Finish and Box Presence(21:11) - Attacking Relationships & Service to the Striker(23:15) - 1-2 | Momentum Shift & Defensive Breakdown(26:13) - Garnacho's Face / Most Disliked Players(27:40) - 1-3 | Zubimendi's Goal and Game Control(29:16) - Refereeing, Game Management & Discipline(31:04) - Missed Chances to Kill the Tie(31:44) - 2-3 | Late Goal Conceded & Narrow First-Leg Margin(33:55) - Full-Time Reflection, Stats & First-Leg Takeaways(37:22) - PT.2 Who Am I? It was another successful night for Premier League clubs in the Champions League with wins for Manchester City who beat Borussia Dortmund, Newcastle who got the better of Athletic Club at St James Park - and a draw for Chelsea away to Qarabag in Baku. Kelly Cates has all the reaction and is joined by Premier League legends Michael Brown, Leon Osman and Tim Krul. They start at the Etihad where Phil Foden and Erling Haaland dazzled again for Manchester City on bonfire night – and Pep Guardiola even pops on the pod to chat to John Murray after his side's 4-1 victory. Tim gives his thoughts on Joelinton and Dan Burn after they scored for his former side, giving Newcastle a 2 nil win.And Chelsea came from 2-1 down to draw two all with their opponents, after Alejandro Garnacho got Chelsea's second and proved that he was indeed the impact substitution that manager Enzo Maresca needed.
