The history and invention of Peppermint Patty Day dates way back centuries ago. Historically, the making of this bundle of deliciousness started in the Quiggin family, who made the first production of the patty on the Isle of Man, a Northern Irish Sea island in the year 1840. Commercial production of Peppermint Patty proliferated and spread across to other regional in 1900. The most remarkable of these companies was York Cone Company, whose first production called the York peppermint patty became renowned from 1940 till 1972 when Peter Paul bought the company and sold the product for another five years before merging with Cadbury in 1975...until Hershey bought the peppermint patty in 1988.

Ruth Townend is joined in the studio by Gwynne Dyer, author of Climate Wars, and Chatham House's own Dr Daniel Quiggin to talk about climate solutions from the magical to the mundane. For his forthcoming book Intervention Earth, Dyer has spoken with more than 50 thinkers, innovators and engineers about how we might cool the planet and avoid catastrophe. Dyer, Quiggin and Townend explore the potential of unicorns, workhorses, and the odd dark horse technology, discuss the moral hazard of reliance on unproven technology, and consider the role of both technology and governance in meeting the Paris Agreement goals.  You can find out more about Gwynne Dyer's work on his website, and read Daniel Quiggin's work on the role of the aviation industry in reaching net zero on the Chatham House website. Trying to follow the key macroeconomic debates that are swirling around DC, CNBC, the WSJ and the NYT? If you are but don't want to go back to graduate school or re-open your college macroeconomics textbook, John Quiggin has a solution. His Economics in Two Lessons: Why Markets Work So Well, and Why They Can Fail So Badly (Princeton University Press, 2019) achieves several goals. First, it frames the current debates, providing a concise, well-written history of macroeconomics and the key twists and turns in economic policy that have brought us to our current state of (general) disagreement on economic policy. Second, he structures his view of macroeconomics as a rebuttal to a 1946 book by Henry Hazlitt in 1946 called Economics in One Lesson. Seventy years later, Quiggin counters Hazlitt's view that markets are "correct," in that their prices accurately reflect opportunity costs for buyers and sellers. Quiggin's second lesson highlights the externalities and factors that distort those opportunity costs and lead to suboptimal outcomes such as extended unemployment, excessive income inequality, and the seemingly intractable problem (from an economics perspective) of pollution. In the final portion of his book, Quiggin argues what policies he thinks would make markets work better by generating a more accurate understanding of opportunity costs. To some, his prescriptions will look like the program of the Left. The great irony is that his goal is to make markets function better, not rid us of them. Whether you agree with his prescriptions are not, this is a very interesting book and a great way for non-economists to get up to speed on current debates and policy issues without having to do a single test for statistical significance or worry about heteroscedasticity. The Quiggin' Out MMA Podcast is back with Episode 61 and are back with one of the friends of the show and recently announced BKFC lightweight title challenger "The Gentleman of Violence" himself, Tom Shoaff!   We already know what you're going to say. Tom was just on the show just a mere 8 episodes ago. How much could have really changed since then? A LOT.  This episode was exciting to film as Shoaff has been INCREDIBLY vocal about deserving a title shot and he has finally achieved that opportunity.  Shoaff discusses his new mindset, being in the prime of his career and life (noting how cliche' that may sound) and really what he feels he will bring to the table that current champion Luis "Baboon" Palomino hasn't seen before.   This truly was a fun episode as are all appearances that Shoaff has made on the show and it's a super exciting time to be in the MMA journalism world and get the opportunity to dive into the minds of some of the best athletes in the world.  We spent a lot of time discussing Shoaff's recent promotion to BJJ Black Belt and what that means to him in a sport he can't use it in.  Enjoy!  Don't forget to head over to https://www.quigginoutpodcast.com/for all things Quiggin Out!   Also, a special shout-out to La Barba Cubano for supplying some amazing beard oil, @Tim_MakesKnives on Instagram, Fat Boy Jiu-Jitsu, Bertsos Bakeshop for making some delicious treats and our newest sponsor, The Concert Junkie!    Visit TALESOFACONCERTJUNKIE.MYSHOPIFY.COM and use promo code "Quiggin Out" for 15% off your order! This episode had an incredible amount of significance as Carmouche was the first fighter that I interviewed ELEVEN years ago when I was just starting in the MMA journalism field. The nerves and panic were real and it was an amazing experience as this was the person who confirmed that this was something to pursue. We went down the rabbit hole, re-visiting those interview questions, and answers, all while discussing how much has changed in that time. Carmouche talks about being a mother, a wife, and most recently, a world champion with Bellator. This was a really fun episode to do and is full of so many stories and personal reflections. Carmouche holds nothing back when it comes to discussing her career, BKFC, her losses, and how her life has been impacted from a career as a mixed martial artist. The Quiggin' Out MMA Podcast is back with Episode 58 and have none other than BJJ Black Belt, friend of the show and of course, Sapateiro 30 competitor, Kevin Gallagher!    Gallagher brings such a different approach to Jiu-Jitsu and life and we talk about it all. He really brings us into the lowest of lows and how life hit him with every submission it could, all at once. But Jiu-Jitsu became a beacon for growth and change.  This was a really fun episode and amazing guest to have on the show. Gallagher and I discussed his upcoming match with Bobby "White Trash" Emmonds. We discussed that nickname because you can't just ignore that in a conversation, his previous competitions and how he became a black belt after winning Worlds multiple times.   One of the coolest moments of this talk was Gallagher getting to talk about what it's like to be a school owner now and how in December, he'll be promoting his first student to a Black Belt. This student came to him from another gym and Gallagher discusses how he had to go all the way up the chain of command to get approval for this promotion. But it's incredibly well deserved and exciting.    The Old Man jokes abound in this one and it's all in good fun as I have a tremendous amount of respect for Gallagher and his teachings.   Sapateiro 30 goes down on August 7, 2022 starting at 5PM live from Tampa Florida and competitors will be fighting for a $10K max payout. eventbrite.com/e/sapateiro-30-the-205-division-tickets-353807055427 aff=ebdsoporgprofile&fbclid=IwAR3WNZ4jAF_S_8vdllLKsO6jU4pstDpS263w8B3QmlakLs2m1L4NDSkKfto   Enjoy!   Don't forget to head over to https://www.quigginoutpodcast.com/ for all things Quiggin Out!    Also, a special shout-out to La Barba Cubano for supplying some amazing beard oil, @Tim_MakesKnives on Instagram, Fat Boy Jiu-Jitsu and Bertsos Bakeshop for making some delicious treats. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/matt-quiggins/support

So many things were brought to life in the course of our conversation. We discussed how crucial having a hobby is, how important it is to stay active and how it's never too late to start doing something you love. Taylor started drumming in her early teens. Elaine aka Jiu-jitsu Grandma didn't start training until she was 69. Yes you read that right. The Quiggin' Out MMA Podcast is back with Episode 55 featuring not one, but two guests as the title spoiled for you. This could not have come together any better than it did. This episode was almost filmed 10 years to the day of UFC on FX 3, which happened to be the first UFC event that I ever attended. It was an immediate love for live sports and the first day I had met any fighter, being Ian McCall. Wineland called into the show on whim and it really just turned into something more amazing than previous interviews. This episode is not a showcase or breakdown of Eddie's next fight on June 18. It was a introspective journey into the career paths of two different fighters who seem to have the same mindset and that is an amazing thing to watch unfold on screen. McCall, no longer Uncle Creepy, talks about how different his life would have been had he won the title that night against Mighty Mouse. (Spoiler, it's not a happy path). Wineland talks about whether or not he still thought he'd be fighting in the UFC 10 years later, let alone getting a brand new four fight contract this year to continue to compete on the worlds' grandest stage. McCall and Wineland really dive deep and explore life, psychedelic's, careers and what life after fighting has meant and will mean, respectively for each of them. Take some time and really have fun with this one and realize that you may get more out of it than you think. Of course, there are some fun stories peppered in here as well as well as some fun facts!
