In this episode, Matt sits down with Sebastian Jimenez, Founder and CEO of Rilla, to explore how AI is changing the way senior living operators coach sales teams, improve tour performance, and increase occupancy. Sebastian breaks down why traditional mystery shopping falls short, what top-performing sales directors do differently, and how AI-powered conversation analysis can uncover the behaviors that actually drive move-ins.Guest BioSebastian Jimenez is the Founder and CEO of Rilla, an AI coaching platform built for in-person sales teams. Backed by Google Ventures, Rilla helps organizations analyze real customer conversations to improve coaching, consistency, and conversion rates. The company has been recognized on the Forbes Cloud 100 and the Forbes Next 1000. Sebastian is also a former stand-up comedian, bringing sharp perspective and energy to conversations about sales, leadership, and technology.Timestamps:02:00 – Matt introduces Sebastian Jimenez, Founder and CEO of Rilla, and sets up the conversation around AI coaching for in-person sales. 02:53 – Sebastian explains what Rilla does and how it helps senior living sales teams record, analyze, and improve prospect tours through AI-powered coaching. 04:13 – Why mystery shopping creates friction, and why sales reps often push back on it. Sebastian compares sales coaching to sports: you cannot coach what you cannot actually see. 09:12 – What separates top-performing senior living sales directors from the average. Sebastian introduces the idea of “Moneyball for sales” and explains how AI can identify the behaviors tied to better conversion rates. 12:04 – The surprising top objection in senior living tours: unit size. Sebastian shares how elite sales performers reframe the conversation from square footage to lifestyle fit. 16:46 – One of the biggest mistakes sales teams make: mishandling the “I'm not ready” objection. Sebastian explains the question top performers ask to uncover the real reason a prospect started touring. 21:39 – Where the ROI shows up. Sebastian shares that Rilla customers saw an average 25.9% increase in tour-to-deposit conversion rates in pilot comparisons. 24:07 – How other industries are using AI coaching, from virtual shadowing to personalized follow-up, and what senior living can learn from them. 28:36 – Sebastian's final takeaway: AI is a tool, not a replacement for strong managers or healthy sales culture. The technology works best when paired with great coaching.

For our final episode discussing Rilla of Ingleside, we invited our friend Dr. Emily Woster for a good old-fashioned geek out on everything we love about this book. Our conversation is all over the place in the best way – from the books that we think would be great companion reads to Rilla, to the folklore that influenced Walter's prophetic visions, to deep dives on a few of our favorite scenes, to L.M. Montgomery's wartime diaries. It's a freewheeling and fun conversation you won't want to miss! You can find more of Emily Woster's work at The Anne Manuscript for high quality scans of LMM's original handwritten manuscript and notes. The L.M. Montgomery Bookshelf where you can find scans of books from LMM's library including some of her own notations in the books and Emily's information and notes about history and context of these books! Florida's legal incentives (no state tax, homestead law, one-way attorney fees) create a unique, high-risk business environment that attracts wealth but also drives up costs, as seen in the insurance crisis.John's cold-calling metrics are declining (lead/hr: 0.5 vs. 1.0; lead-to-appt conversion: low 20s vs. 38%), likely due to market saturation ("scrape" phase) in Kelowna.Rydel's strategy for saturated markets involves adding new services (siding, windows) and expanding into new territories to maintain growth.Recommended actions for John: Conduct field shadowing to assess team morale, and test a low-risk "satellite division" in Penticton to validate a new market.Rilla Conference Takeaways:Austin attended Rilla's sales coaching conference in Hollywood, FL.Key theme: "Sales is a sport," emphasizing coaching and leadership.Noted advanced AI solutions, including a virtual call center with highly realistic AI agents.Florida's Legal & Tax Incentives:No state income tax → higher take-home pay vs. Canada.Homestead Law: Primary residence is protected from business bankruptcy, encouraging risk-taking and wealth sheltering.Case Study: Paul Bilzerian used this law to protect his mansion from creditors.Puerto Rico's Tax Haven: No federal income tax and low local rates (4%) for residents, which inflates property values.Florida's Insurance Crisis & Roofing Boom:Problem: Florida accounted for >70% of US property insurance litigation despite having only 7-10% of claims.Key Laws & Practices:One-Way Attorney Fees: Insurers paid homeowner legal fees if they lost, but homeowners paid nothing if they lost.Assignment of Benefit (AOB): Homeowners signed over their claim rights to contractors.Replacement Cost: Courts ruled for full replacement value (e.g., a new metal roof) instead of depreciated value.Double Liability: Insurers who lost a lawsuit could owe double the original claim.Result: These laws created a massive incentive for contractors to sue insurers, causing 6 of the top 10 insurers to go bankrupt.Resolution: Governor DeSantis enacted reforms in 2022 to curb these practices.John's Declining Cold-Calling Metrics:Lead/hr: Down to ~0.5 from a peak of >1.0.Lead-to-appt conversion: Down to low 20s from a peak of 38%.Cause: Likely market saturation in Kelowna after years of door-knocking.Rydel's "Scrape" Phase Strategy:Rydel faces similar saturation (termed "scrape") after 3+ marketing passes.Solution: Add new services (siding, windows) to create new revenue streams in existing markets.Calgary Hailstorm Case Study:Challenge: A massive hailstorm created a unique market where insurance work dominated.Adaptation: Rydel's franchisee had to learn siding on the fly to meet insurance company requirements for multi-service contractors.Maritimes Market Dynamics:Challenge: A "hometown bias" ("not sending money off the rock") makes it hard for outside brands to compete.Case Study: The Irving family built a conglomerate by capitalizing on this bias, creating a vertically integrated empire.

Our fascinating discussion with Dr. Andrea McKenzie continues in this episode. We returned to making connections between living through war and living through the Covid-19 pandemic. We discussed the extraordinary Red Cross and nursing work taken on by the young women of Rilla of Ingleside, and Andrea teaches us about what would have happened to the young women who took on so many new roles during the war once the men returned home. If you want even more of Andrea's expertise, check out the absolute goldmine of information on the L.M. Montgomery Readathon Facebook Page. Inspired by: Kelly is inspired by the Red Cross and recommends donating to either the International Red Cross or your national chapter like the American Red Cross or the Canadian Red Cross. Tech companies are increasingly adopting a 996 work culture, requiring employees to work from 9 AM to 9 PM, six days a week, to stay competitive in AI innovation. Rilla and Browser-Use are examples of firms embracing this trend, seeking ambitious employees willing to work long hours. Studies indicate productivity declines after 40 hours per week, and health risks such as heart disease and stroke increase with extended work hours. While the 996 culture faces backlash in China, it persists in the US, particularly in the tech sector. Some advocate for improved management practices and technology use to enhance productivity without extending work hours, and there is ongoing discussion about the benefits of a four-day workweek.Learn more on this news by visiting us at: https://greyjournal.net/news/ Hosted on Acast. Tech companies are implementing 72-hour workweeks, known as 996 culture, to accelerate AI development. Originating in China, this work model involves working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week, and is gaining traction in the U.S. AI sector. Companies like Rilla seek employees willing to work these hours to maintain a competitive edge. However, studies show health risks associated with long hours, including increased risks of heart disease and stroke. Productivity research indicates diminishing returns beyond a 40-hour workweek. U.S. laws permit extended hours with employee consent, fueling debate over work-life balance and integration.Learn more on this news by visiting us at: https://greyjournal.net/news/ Hosted on Acast. What were Faith Meredith, Nan and Di Blythe and Mary Vance doing while Rilla was raising a war baby and running the Junior Reds? We get some expert knowledge from Dr. Andrea McKenzie as she joins the Kindred Spirits to discuss the remarkable young women of Rilla of Ingleside, and the causes they took up to support a nation at war. We are discussing the parallels between the homefront experience of WWI and our own experiences of Covid-19 and how Andrea's founding of the L.M. Montgomery Readathon on Facebook during lockdown became a runaway hit. We learned so much from Andrea about that we couldn't bear to cut our conversation short, so this is only Part 1! Walter Blythe stands as the moral conscience of Rilla of Ingleside. In this episode, Dr. Corey McEleney joins us to examine Walter's transformation from a conflict-averse college student into a celebrated war hero, and how his empathetic reflections on war allowed L.M. Montgomery to to wrestle with her own doubts. We also turn to WWI battlefield poetry, tracing its evolution from patriotic fervor to some of the most searing critiques of the war. The poems mentioned or discussed by Corey McEleney are here: In Flanders Fields by John McCrae The Poet As Hero by Siegfried Sassoon Glory of Women by Siegfried Sassoon They by Siegfried Sassoon The General by Siegfried Sassoon Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen You can find more about Corey McEleney at Fordham University. The final part of our Rilla Blythe character arc is here! We can't wait for you to join us in this wide-ranging conversation about Rilla's moral growth arc in Rilla of Ingleside. Montgomery expert and professor—whose unparalleled insights bring Rilla's sacrifices and moral courage to life. If you want to know more about what Laura is doing, you can check out the L.M. Montgomery Institute for all sorts of amazing resources! Inspired by: Laura is inspired by the wartime cake recipe that was a Canadian specialty during WWI and is sharing it here! Recipe for Wartime Cake, straight from the Robinson family archives! 2 cups white sugar 4 tbsp margarine (butter?) 1 cup chopped dates 1lb raisins 2 tsp cinnamon 2 tsp cloves and allspice (I put one of each) 2 cups boiling water 1 tsp salt 3 cups whole wheat flour 2 tsp soda (so Mum was notoriously bad at recording recipes, so I actually use 2 tsp of baking powder and ½ of salt and ½ of soda, as per a banana cake recipe I have) Boil for 10 min, sugar, dates, raisins, water. When cool, add salt flour and soda. Mix well. Makes one ring cake or two loaves. Bake one hour in slow oven 300degrees or until done. Kelly is inspired by Rilla's coalition building with the Junior Reds so she recommends getting to know your neighbors and community, especially those you might not otherwise have anything in common with. We are launching into Rilla of Ingleside with one of our signature character studies! Rilla Blythe is the family beauty, and she knows it. But what good is being pretty and popular in the midst of a terrible war? We're discussing parties and weddings, courtships and crushes, and the way World War I changed everything. We're also comparing Rilla to a similar heroine – Jane Austen's Emma. Inspired by: Kelly recommends war romances like The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje and the Survivor's Club series by Mary Balogh, the first one is The Proposal. What if one tweak in treatment consultations increased case acceptance 30%? In this episode, Kendall sits down with Patrick Johnson, Head of Customer Experience at Rilla, to unpack the hidden moments that decide whether patients say yes to treatment. Patrick shares how one dental group saw treatment acceptance increase 48% in just three months, why many treatment coordinators don't ask for the close, and how AI coaching exposes patterns like doctors downselling or coordinators doing 75% of the talking. Think of it as game tape for your dental team—every conversation gets sharper, and more patients commit to treatment.
Send us a textToday we're wrapping up our deep dive videos for our newest miniseries covering the Anne of Green Gables 8-book collection by L.M. Montgomery. Anne is now a mother of six, navigating a reality in which herself, her husband, and all of her children exist in World War One Canada. What does this mean for the country, the world, and more specifically, the Blythe family and the small community they live in? We're here to give you the “411” on these lesser-read books in this series, and answer the question of whether or not they're worth the read.In this episode we dive into books seven and eight: Rainbow Valley and Rilla of Ingleside - we've moved past the well-known perspective of Anne Shirley and are now seeing the world through the eyes of her children, and more specifically, her youngest daughter Rilla. What do we think about the differences, and how do we currently feel about the focus slowly shifting away from Anne and predominantly onto her daughter? Who were our favorite and least favorite characters and plot points? Do we think these books carry on the feminist legacy of the more popular installations, and how did we feel about reading a “war book?”Check out our kickoff episode all about what the Bildungsroman is, why women and girl's stories are so important for everyone to read, and how Montgomery expertly uses this book series to critique social and political issues of the early 1900's, with an emphasis on women's roles in society. We also provide a bit of context by discussing Montgomery's life, and the political climate in Canada when this story takes place. Coming of age tales can be so much more than simple children's books. We're here to discover why! Listen on for our reviews of the final books: seven and eight, our deep dive reactions, and important things we learned about history because of this book. Like where daylight savings time comes from, where the draft is legal, and why several pages of Rilla of Ingleside were redacted until 2010.And stick around for next week - the final Anne episode where we rank the books and all of the 1980's movie adaptations!
