Send us a Text Message.Writing about Love, Sex, Relationships: Rachel Kramer Bussel, an accomplished erotica author and editor, shares her inspiring journey into the world of erotic writing. Starting in 1999 while in law school, her first published story "Monica and Me" launched a successful career exploring diverse sexual fantasies and desires through short stories, anthologies, and teaching. Bussel highlights the joys of writing erotica fiction, from creative exercises with word limits to collaborating with other authors for varied perspectives and anthologies & fiction books (affiliate links below, podcast may receive commissions, thank you! "The Big Book of Quickies" https://amzn.to/3YL9dB9 Enjoy the excerpt read by Rachel her story in the anthology "Mile High Hotness")She celebrates normalizing diverse sexualities through the genre while lamenting external efforts to restrict its accessibility. The speakers discuss erotica's nuances, challenging perceptions of it being a "lesser" form, which it's not! They emphasize its diversity in exploring fantasies safely, its potential for self-discovery, and the pains authors suffer from some societal attitudes dismissing its literary merits.Writing intimate scenes requires developing characters' emotions & motivations beyond just physical details. Researching unfamiliar experiences brings authenticity, exposing authors and readers to new perspectives. The speakers advocate understanding that personal tastes vary, but skilled writing can engage readers regardless of specific content. This week we interview Rachel Kramer Bussel, who has edited more than 70 volumes of erotic fiction. We discussed the role that erotic fiction can play in all of our sex lives, and the way in which it might be able to assist in recovering some of the frisson that may have gone out of your relationships in recent years. Here are tips for the eroticisation of pretty well anything, from eating oranges, too, well, eating oysters, but you get the drift.Reading erotic literature to each other, or even writing it for each other can be a massive turn on at any age. Think of the ways in which writers of erotic literature (some better than others) played a role in your own sexual development. But again, it is something surrounded by shame and guilt. What would be really great would be for people to be able to discuss these things openly, and without shame. Fantasies are for the most part harmless and productive ways of spending your time and discussing your fantasies can only be a good thing.Have a listen, see what you think, discuss it with your partner, and maybe even have a go at writing some yourself. STOP. Do not think to yourself, well, I don't want to write Erotica—why is this podcast/book for me? This conversation, and the book, How to Write Erotica, that inspires it, goes far beyond any pre-imagined specifics you have about writing scenes, stories and books focused on which bit of bodily anatomy goes where—because to write good erotica, you have to come back to the heart of writing any story (fiction, memoir, what-have-you: why this story, why this character, why now? Guest Rachel Kramer Bussel knows what makes good story, and this conversation is applicable to any writing that appeals to our senses (as all writing should) and challenges our ability to tell our truths (ditto).Links from the PodStarr**cker Magazine on TwitterTake Me There anthologyFetlife.comAddition, Toni JordanA Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers by Xiaolu GuoCheesy Boots in Dirty Girls: Erotica for Women#AmReadingCity of Likes, Jenny MollenSpoiler Alert & Ship Wrecked, Olivia DadeRachelkramerbussel.comeroticawriting101.com@raquelita on TwitterIs 2023 going to be the year you finally click through and start exploring the idea of becoming a book coach? A lone girl sits on a busy New York City subway. She is huddled in a warm, burgendy down coat and pink hat, in sharp contrast to the fluorescent lights and cold metal that's around her. She is intently reading something on her phone and as she scrolls a flush comes to her cheeks and her eyes widen in interest. The small rosebud "O" of her mouth is hidden beneath her KN95 mask. A burly man in construction books sits down with a thud next to her, startling her focus. She can't help but notice his thick thighs tightly stretched against the denim of his jeans, manspreading his way towards her.... .... What do you think? Not bad for a first try? This month I can't wait to introduce you to Rachel Kramer Bussel, wonderwoman of a million literary things but this month, editor of the newly released anthology of erotica, "The Big Book of Orgasms, Volume 2." I was lucky enough to be sent an early copy of this book to read as well as an earlier book she edited that was released in July 2021 entitled "Coming Soon: Women's Orgasm Erotica" and read both in tandem, switching back and forth between the two (often on the subway!). In this episode, Rachel and I chat about what got her started in writing and editing erotica, how erotica can help us discover what turns us on without fear of shame or judgement, and why fantasy is such a necessary part of a healthy sex life, whether you're single or partnered. The Big Book of Orgasms released February 8th, 2022 for all of you looking to spice up your solo sex lives this V-Day and I highly recommend both books to treat yourself right! :) Buy the The Big Book on Amazon here. Buy Coming Soon at an independent retailer here. Learn more about Rachel here. Submit your own erotica for consideration of publication here!
I tend to treat my books both with and without reverence. I dog-ear pages but I don't lend out my books. Even if I don't like a book, I won't give it away. So when my friend Leonor Mamanna told me she recently started painting in books, I was like “Oh yes. You have to come talk about that.” Indulgence Nichole recommends gua sha! Guest Leonor Mamanna is a photo editor by day, passion project pursuer by night. Leonor has a weekly newsletter with recommendations on what to read, watch, listen to, places to go, things to see, and internet happenings, all framed by a personal essay. She is a born and raised New Yorker and mom to a very strong-willed toddler. Sex sells—and sex writing shows up in countless genres beyond just erotica. So while we're focusing on erotica this week with guest Rachel Kramer Bussel, who's edited more than 70 erotica anthologies, we're also talking about sex writing more generally—the history of erotic literature, why erotica collections tend to be anthologies rather than single-author books, and some tips to think about if and when you come to the page to write your own sex scenes.
I like watching sports, but I don't have the dedication to be a diehard fan. To be a fan–especially a body-painting, tailgating kind of fan–you have love any player who joins the team or forgive constant losing and that ain't my bag. There's a lot of shit within sports fandoms I don't understand, so I asked Josh Terry help break down what goes on behind the face paint. Indulgence Nichole recommends Queens of Mystery, available online via AcornTV! Guest Chicago-based writer Josh Terry has covered music and culture for a number of publications since 2012. His writing has been featured in VICE, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Vinyl Me Please, Chicago Magazine, The A.V. Club and others. Lisa and her guest Rachel Kramer Bussel discuss Room by Emma Donoghue in 2010. This is a dark book told in 5-year-old Jack's perspective about his experience in “room,” with his ma where they are being held captive. This is a mature discussion that wouldn't be suitable for young children. Rachel and Lisa discuss how the book is emotionally devastating but a hopeful story. There are full spoilers in this show. Links Discussed on the show: Author Emma Donoghue says on her website Room was written after experiencing the claustrophobia of parenthood and is a metaphor about that experience. She also says that the book was partially inspired by the case of Elisabeth Fritzl who was held prisoner by her father for 24 years and gave birth to seven children during that time. After Room was published, on May 6, 2013, ABC News reported Cleveland witnessed a miracle when Amanda Berry called 911. Berry along with Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight, had been held captive for more than nine years. The New York Times describes how Donoghue portrays the voice of Jack and the LA Times discusses some very fast shifts in characters and plot. Books Discussed on the show: · Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott· Little Beauties by Kim Addonizio· A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers by Xiaolu Guo For more information, find Lisa on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and her website. *The book titles mentioned include affiliate links.
