Astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore are back on Earth after spending nine months on the International Space Station, a big change from their initial mission that was only supposed to last eight days. Their replacement crew arrived last week, and they landed back on our planet on Tuesday following a 17-hour ride. Although they are home safe and sound, Williams and Wilmore have a long rehabilitation process ahead. Retired NASA astronaut Clayton "AstroClay" Anderson joins the Rundown to describe the return process for spacemen and what the road ahead looks like. President Trump has invoked the Alien and Sedition Acts, an 18th-century wartime law, to deport illegal immigrants believed to be part of Tren de Aragua, a dangerous Venezuelan prison gang. The law gives the President the authority to deport foreign nationals during wartime, and the deportation of several Venezuelans is already facing legal challenges from federal courts. Former Deputy Assistant Attorney General and UC Berkeley law professor John Yoo joins the podcast to explain the argument that the Trump administration will make in court for their use of this wartime act to deport violent criminals. On this edition of the Ex Terra Podcast, we talk with retired NASA engineer Edgar Zapata about his views of space commerce. Zapata spent 32 years as a NASA engineer before retiring in March of 2021. Currently, he works with the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) Program, which nurtures visionary ideas that could transform future NASA missions with the creation of breakthroughs — radically better or entirely new aerospace concepts — while engaging America's innovators and entrepreneurs as partners in the journey. Zapata has an engineering degree from the University of Puerto Rico, and interviewed with NASA his last summer in college. He spent 12 years working on the space shuttle program before shifting to systems engineering and a full-time focus on future missions. He also worked with DARPA on the Experimental Spaceplane in his final years at the agency. Now, the retired NASA engineer is a freelance consultant and spends a good deal of his time writing, including his blog Zapata Talks NASA. In the blog, Edgar shares his experience, thoughts and occasional analysis and numbers about NASA, space exploration and development, for the kind of growth that always seems just around the corner. There are stories about where we have been, where we might head, and what must change to go anywhere. Building on his prior (public) work, he leans toward the numbers, but also works to add the context that is necessary for insight about what it all means. How does what happens in space affect your everyday life? The Ex Terra podcast is dedicated to introducing you to many of the interesting people involved in the commercial space industry, and taking you behind the scenes with many of the companies making significant contributions to the new space economy. The podcast is available on Anchor, Spotify, Apple Music, Google Podcasts, Breaker, Overcast, Pocketcasts and Radio Public.

Imagine looking upon the Earth with millions of brilliant stars in the background while you “walk“ through low Earth orbit toward the Hubble Space Telescope. Upon arrival at the Hubble—you’re reminded of the fact that it sees 13 billion years into the “past” and can practically witness the birth of the Universe. Join Host Craig James in a wonderment-igniting conversation with Michael T. "Bueno” Good—retired NASA Astronaut + retired Commissioned Officer in the United States Air Force. Colonel Good has flown 30+ types of aircraft such as the F-111 and F-15… and flew aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis for STS-125 (the final Space Shuttle servicing mission to the Hubble). He was also Mission Specialist 2 on STS-132 which docked with the International Space Station for an assembly mission. Space Exploration expands human imagination and can bridge human social, societal and political chasms. Space Exploration also serves us in our daily lives—in ways we may not realize. Every successful Mission is a series of “consecutive miracles” Colonel Good explains. Listen-in to learn more. For more on Colonel Good: see his NASA profile here. Learn more about your ad choices. Voyager 1 and 2: Still operating after 40 years in the depths of space. Voyager 1 is currently some 20 billion kilometres from Earth travelling at 15.5 kilometres a second. It takes 19 hours for a signal from the spacecraft's 20 watt transmitter to reach home. Voyager 2 is 17 billion kilometres away and will soon leave the Solar System. Launched in 1977, the twin spacecrafts have explored the giant planets and their strange moons, investigated the boundary of the Solar System and changed how we see our place in the Universe. The probes even carry a message for aliens in the form of a golden record. Retired NASA astronaut Ron Garan meets many of the original team still working on the mission, nursing the twin spacecraft through their final years. NASA engineer José Hernández is one of four children born into a migrant farming family from Mexico and spent much of his childhood on what he calls "the California circuit" - traveling from Mexico to northern California each March, picking fruits and vegetables at farms along the route before returning to Mexico for Christmas. After graduating high school in Stockton, Hernandez enrolled at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering and was awarded a full scholarship to the graduate program at U.C. Santa Barbara. In 1987, he accepted a full-time job with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he had worked as a co-op in college. During his time there, Hernandez worked on signal and image processing applications in radar imaging, computed tomography, and acoustic imaging. He was selected to begin training as a mission specialist as part of the 2004 astronaut candidate class. Broadcast Victoria Gaither had the pleasure of spending two days with Photographer & Retired NASA Engineer Ronald 'Ron' Moultere who documented my two day trip for International Connection Radio to Harper's Ferry, WV. Victoria interviewed locals and historians about this beautiful slice of America. Ron in this podcast talks about his work on NASA's Hubble Telescope and why he enjoys taking pictures. He also presented Victoria with a patch that went up into space. ICRadio thanks Ron for his service to the space industry.
