Together, they embark on an enthralling voyage, tracing Col. Hurley's awe-inspiring journey from upstate New York to the vast expanse of space. As a recipient of the esteemed Congressional Space Medal of Honor, Col. Hurley paints a vivid and personal portrait of his spaceflight experiences, unraveling the captivating challenges, triumphs, and rewards that shaped his remarkable career. With our hosts, he delves into the rigorous training program that hones the skills and fortitude required of an astronaut, from mastering orbital mechanics to honing public speaking and photography skills. Recounting the exhilarating moments of launch and landing, he shares his unique insights on flying the space shuttle, commanding the first crewed commercial orbital spacecraft for SpaceX, and the cultural differences that exist between NASA and SpaceX. He also emphasizes the profound impact visual documentation has on scientific research and the exploration of the cosmos, and shares his thoughts on the future of manned spaceflight. Filled with personal anecdotes and unique perspectives, today's 40th installment of The Adrenaline Zone podcast offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the wonders of space exploration that will leave you with a profound appreciation for the wonders of the universe and the heroic individuals who help us all learn more about it. The Finer Details of this Episode: Col. Hurley's journey to becoming an astronaut The rigorous training program and diverse skill set required for astronauts The importance of capturing imagery during the fly around of the International Space Station Flying the space shuttle and maneuvering in space Personal anecdotes and insights from Col. Hurley's spaceflight experiences The differences between the Space Shuttle and Crewed SpaceX missions Challenges and lessons learned during the development of the Crewed SpaceX mission The adaptation process and experiences during a two-month stay on the International Space Station (ISS) The reentry and landing procedures of Dragon spacecraft Lunar exploration as a means to prepare for future human missions to Mars Quotes: "You can do anything else, but just don't hit the space station." "You're hand flying it. The shuttle had the capability built in for it to land automatically, but there was never a lot of confidence in the system." "It's kind of like going supersonic at 20,000 feet. Isn't that exciting?” "I think it would be fair to say that the culture of SpaceX in 2015, 2016 probably was not a lot different than NASA during the '60s as we were doing the Apollo program. You had a bunch of incredibly talented, smart, but very young, relatively inexperienced space people, but working on a common goal and almost with fanaticism, frankly." "If we think as humanity we want to go to Mars and put people on Mars… we've got to run it all like a dress rehearsal on the Moon because then we're only two days away, not six months away from getting something to the crew." Did you watch the Netflix documentary Return to Space? Then you will remember one of the stars of the show, former NASA astronaut Doug Hurley! Ilham sits down with Doug to discuss his amazing flight in the SpaceX Dragon rocket, what sparked his passion for flight, the launch of Artemis I, when we'll see humans on Mars, and, most importantly, what businesses can learn from space exploration. While at NASA Doug went to space three times: In 2009, Doug piloted the NASA Space Shuttle Endeavour, and in 2011 he piloted the Space Shuttle Atlantis, which was the final flight of NASA's Space Shuttle program. But that wasn't Doug's final flight: in 2020, he returned to space aboard the SpaceX Dragon rocket. After clocking more than 92 days in space, Doug retired from NASA and now works for Northrop Grumman, which built the two towering motors that powered NASA's Artemis rocket to the moon. In January 2023, Doug was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor by Vice President Kamala Harris for his significant contributions to American space programs.Time stamps1: 46 - Spark for passion for flight3:24 - Experience going to space4: 59 - The SpaceX Dragon mission9: 32 - Focus on safety12:50 - Friendship with fellow astronaut Bob Behnken16:38 - SpaceX ascent and re-entry/splash down19:46 - Bringing hope during covid-1923:05 - Launch of Artemis I27:32 - When will we put humans on Mars?31:26 - Work at Northrop Grumman36:27 - Diversity, equity and inclusion in space exploration39:25 - What can businesses learn from space exploration?41:56 - Devotion to family For additional details about the podcast, show notes, and access to resources mentioned during the show, please visit https://www.solvay.com/podcast

Return to Space is an American documentary film made for Netflix and directed by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi. Its story follows Elon Musk's and SpaceX engineers' two-decade mission to send NASA astronauts back to the International Space Station and revolutionize space travel.●Surprisingly good.●The storytelling, ●editing and flashbacks are fantastic.I am no expert, but I love to look at stars, moon, clouds and sunset. I have never had a conversation involve Elon Musk and thought this document about him. But it wasn't. With some appearances here and there, Elon Musk appears to be very passionate, funny, charming and driven. I also like how they allow the scientists and other astronauts to share their thoughts, families rather touching.well done. I learn a lot. I feel smarter too. HahahTruly heart touching and overwhelming to watch spaceX achieve this kind of milestone and gaining a great success in the history of human space flight.i really hope one day flying through space would be accessible to everyone, which is still a dream of many space lovers.Amazing! If all the wealthy people would aim for perfectionism, would have passion for science, respect for humankind, and hunger for knowledge...●Just goosebumps every minute, ●it has emotions, ●mystery and everything packed in for a nerd of space. Some cool facts and theory ▪︎The Space Shuttle program finished with its last mission, STS-135 flown by Atlantis, in July 2011, retiring the final Shuttle in the fleet. The Space Shuttle program formally ended on August 31, 2011.▪︎While reentering Earth's atmosphere, Columbia broke apart, killing the entire crew. All of these factors — high costs, slow turnaround, few customers, and a vehicle (and agency) that had major safety problemsAstronauts often say the reasons humans haven't returned to the lunar surface are budgetary and political hurdles, not scientific or technical challenges. ▪︎Private companies like Blue Origin and SpaceX may be the first entities to return people to the moon▪︎SpaceX was formed by entrepreneur Elon Musk in the hopes of revolutionizing the aerospace industry and making affordable spaceflight a reality. The company entered the arena with the Falcon 1 rocket, a two-stage liquid-fueled craft designed to send small satellites into orbit.▪︎SpaceX scored its first big headline in 2010, when it became the first private company to launch a payload into orbit and return it to Earth intact—something only government agencies like NASA or Russia's Roscosmos had done before. The program has had 18 successful consecutive missions including three successful escape tests, showing the crew escape system can activate safely in any phase of flight.▪︎Douglas Gerald Hurley is an American engineer, former Marine Corps pilot and former NASA astronaut. Life is a journey of discovery. A rainbow of challenges stirring your heart, tantalizing your mind, engaging your body, and thrilling your spirit. As much as challenges scar us, they also show that we are alive! Challenges give purpose to us every day. Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT Initially, I know what you are thinking --- If I had no challenges, that would be great. It would make life easier. But would it make life easier? Possibly at the beginning. However, the journey of discovery would lessen causing you to become settled and bored with where you are in life. There would be no incentive to be your best selfie or stretch yourself in knowledge, thoughts, and actions. Discovery is the process of finding something unexpectedly or in the course of a search. A journey of discovery is ignited by the challenges in your every day. My kitty cat, Snickers, thinks she is the master of all cats. She is very smart. But even she runs into challenges. Look at SpaceX and the splashdown of the "Endeavour", named by astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken on Sunday afternoon. A mission of "testing"; a test flight. A journey of discovery will throw twists and turns, loops, and dips. In all of it though, you must own your own actions. The K.I.S.S. ~ Own your own actions! We would love life to be so easy where everything is spelled out. Little to no thought would make decision-making super easy. But life isn't about easy. It's about the simple strategies, consistency, and perseverance that keeps you on the journey of discovery. Life is full of smiles and frowns. But how you see it determines how you show up for the rainbows of challenges. So how do you own your own actions? Be true to your circumstances. Don't sugar coat everything. You know that song Just a Spoonful of Sugar helps the medicine go down. If you are not real with where you are and what is happening, other mistakes or situations could rock you more. Ownership doesn't mean defeat. Failure isn't the end of the world. It's just a hiccup in your journey of discovery. If you fall short or there's a failure, you still have the opportunity for one more step. "One step at a time leads to miles of greatness." Redirect your actions. Take A.I.M.! The capsule, named Resilience, and its SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket rolled out to Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida late Monday into early Tuesday (Nov. 9-10), NASA officials said. The Falcon 9 is scheduled to launch Saturday evening (Nov. 14), sending four astronauts — NASA's Victor Glover, Mike Hopkins and Shannon Walker and Japan's Soichi Noguchi — to the orbiting lab on Crew-1, SpaceX's first operational astronaut mission for NASA. NASA's Commercial Crew Program awarded SpaceX a $2.6 billion contract in 2014 to fly at least six operational crewed missions to the space station. The six-month-long Crew-1 is the first of those contracted flights, but it won't be SpaceX's first-ever astronaut mission. That distinction goes to Demo-2, a test flight that sent NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to the station for two months this past summer. However, whether the move comes via confidence or contingency, SpaceX is jumping directly into Starship prototype development, toward a full-scale Super Heavy booster production and testing platform. Super Heavy could be one of SpaceX's easiest projects Indeed, in an inversion of the typical relationship, the next-gen rocket's booster will probably be much simpler than the upper stage — which would be the largest spacecraft with reusable parts and upper stage in the world. Lacking a need for a tiled heat shield, aerodynamic control surfaces (discounting Falcon-style grid fins), a conical nose, and possibly even internal header tanks, the only serious challenge Super Heavy faces for the first time is developing an engine section capable of feeding and supporting up to 28 Raptor engines. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine won't remain in the agency's lead role in the Biden administration even if asked, Aerospace Daily & Defense Report reported on Sunday (Nov. 8). "You need somebody who has a close relationship with the president of the U.S. ... somebody trusted by the administration …. including OMB [Office of Management and Budget], National Space Council, National Security Council," Bridenstine told Irene Klotz, space editor for Aviation Week, Aerospace Daily & Defense Report's parent publication. "I think I would not be the right person for that in a new administration." "There is a political agreement that America needs to do big things in space exploration, that we need to lead the world ... There have been lessons learned from the past, and I think Congress is in a good position to make sure that we have sustainable programs going forward," he said in one of the tweeted snippets. And in another one, he stressed that "there are a lot of people that can do great work as the NASA administrator." This Bacterium Survived on The Outside of The Space Station For a Whole Damn Year Link: https://www.sciencealert.com/this-bacterium-survived-on-the-outside-of-the-space-station-for-a-year A year in space is no walk in the park. Just ask Scott Kelly, the American astronaut who spent a year on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2015. His long-term stay in space changed his DNA, telomeres, and gut microbiome, he lost bone density, and he still had sore feet three months later. So, it's quite a feat that a species of bacterium first found in a can of meat, Deinococcus radiodurans, was still alive and kicking after a year spent living on a specially designed platform outside the pressurised module of the ISS. Researchers have been investigating these mighty microbes for a while; back in 2015, an international team set up the Tanpopo mission on the outside of the Japanese Experimental Module Kibo, to put hardy bacterial species to the test. Now, D. radiodurans has passed with flying colours. This isn't the longest time D. radiodurans has been kept in these conditions – back in August we wrote about a sample of the bacterium being left up there for three whole years. But the team weren't trying for a world record, instead they were trying to uncover what makes D. radiodurans just so good at surviving in these extreme conditions. So, after a year of radiation, freezing and boiling temperatures, and no gravity, the researchers got the spacefaring bacteria back down to Earth, rehydrated both a control that had spent the year on Earth and the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) sample, and compared their results. The survival rate was a lot lower for the LEO bacteria compared to the control version, but the bacteria that did survive seemed to be doing okay, even if they had turned a little different to their Earth-bound brethren. The questions we ask (and forget) to ask astronauts

On this episode of Space Curious, we're talking about our fascination with astronauts, an elite class of humans who have trained years for spaceflight but they are also people with families, hobbies --and --bodily functions. This year marked the first-time astronauts have launched from Florida since 2011 when astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken successfully launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in the Dragon spacecraft, made it to the space station -- and returned home, splashing down in the Gulf of Mexico. It was an epic return for American human space exploration. The astronauts -- affectionately known as “The Space Dads” -- answered a lot of questions about their journey, including about the Crew Dragon bathroom. To ask the question about why we want to know about the little oddities of space life, Space Curious host Emilee Speck spoke to space journalists Marina Koren, of The Atlantic, and Brendan Byrne, of WMFE, along with retired NASA astronaut Terry Virts. Virts offered his perspective of living in space, including some details you might not expect like giving his space station crew mate a haircut and the sounds he misses most from his spaceflights. While, Byrne and Koren both remind us that astronauts' families are also heroes of spaceflight.

Launching a new age of human spaceflight in the United States, Elon Musk's SpaceX can officially consider itself the first-ever company to send humans into space on a commercial spacecraft. So without further ado, welcome. You're part of the new era of space travel. As a member of the human race, SpaceX's historic rocket launch could mean big things for you. After all, according to Elon Musk, “Human spaceflight was the reason SpaceX was created.”On Saturday, May 30 at 3:22 p.m., history was made when SpaceX successfully launched the Crew Dragon capsule carrying NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley — the first two people to fly in a SpaceX vehicle. And just like that, a new era of American space travel took flight. In the same moment Elon Musk had been working toward for over a decade, the launch revolutionized the American space program, and made traveling to the stars seem just within reach. In a special episode of The Abstract, we recap SpaceX's historic mission of the first crewed spaceflight to take off from U.S. soil in nearly a decade. For many Americans, Doug Hurley's and Bob Behnken's success into orbit on SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket changed everything. Revving up the United States' space program, #LaunchAmerica became the hashtag of the week at a time when we needed it the most.Marking the end of a nine-year period in which the U.S. had to rely on Russia to send astronauts to space, SpaceX's success proved America is back in business and headed for the stars. As 2020 continues to be a year that tests American resilience, perhaps Elon Musk puts it best: “This event is something that all of humanity can get excited about. It's just a fundamentally positive, good thing, and I think we need more good things in this world.”Read more at: inverse.com/the-abstractSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
