Why Nonprofit Strategic Plans Fail—And How to Fix Them!

Nonprofits often create strategic plans with the best intentions, yet many fail to achieve their desired impact. Why? We explores the factors that contribute to the breakdown of strategic plans and provide actionable insights into making them resilient and adaptable, with Doug Paul, Managing Partner and Innovation Strategist at Catapult.Doug begins by challenging conventional thinking, offering, "Strategy is always a hypothesis—an informed opinion about how to win." Strategic plans often fall short because they are built for a world that no longer exists. Many organizations cling to outdated planning models that are too rigid to accommodate the dynamic and ever-changing landscape of the nonprofit sector. To truly succeed, nonprofits must rethink their approach. Doug introduces the concept of "assumptions mapping," a technique that scrutinizes the foundational beliefs of an organization to ensure they are sound. He also discusses the importance of "pre-mortem" planning—analyzing potential points of failure before they occur.Continuing, Doug describes how flexibility is key. Instead of treating strategic plans as fixed roadmaps, nonprofits should refresh and iterate their plans regularly, integrating learning cycles every 90 days. This shift allows them to navigate unpredictability with agility and confidence.Doug also points to the need for nonprofits to cultivate an R&D mindset, setting aside 10-15% of resources for innovation and experimentation. "Every once in a while, one of these bets is going to hit, and when it does, it could change everything," he tells us.A nonprofit's strategic plan should not be a rigid document—it should be a living framework that adapts, learns, and evolves. If your nonprofit can embrace this mindset, you'll be better positioned to achieve meaningful, sustainable impact! #StrategicPlanning #NonprofitLeadershipFind us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

#919: I'm back with Doug Paul, my expert on innovation from episode 917, and we're talking about his habits. What intrigued me most was what I felt was exceptional wisdom, as I tend to do just what he alludes to, have an all or nothing approach to all of my habits. I either do an awesome 60-minute workout, or things get in the way and I do nothing. I have glorious devotion time in the morning or...life happens and nothing. Doug talks about this and says his “peacetime” plan only happens about 20% of the time, so when it doesn't he relies on his wartime plan, so instead of 75 minutes of a perfect morning ritual, he may only do 5-10. But at least he makes a deposit. Brilliant. He shares other insights such as his ruthlessness regarding family sabbath and his joy of watching sports and what he calls, “edu-tainment”. #917: Innovation is our focus today and what you heard at the top of the show was Doug Paul, author of Ready or Not: Kingdom Innovation for a Brave New World. Doug is a Managing Partner and Innovation Strategist of Catapult, an organization that helps leaders build successful ministries that scale. You heard him talking about churches today as we discussed their necessary need for massive innovation, but so far they seem to be looking at it poorly. In our opinion. The point of the show however, is for you. I take aim at innovation being counterintuitive. We work and strive so hard to find what drives success in our lives and businesses and want to say, “Yes! We got it!” Then reap the rewards. Which we can and do, for a time. But in today's world, especially for business, things will change. Others will innovate and threaten what we provide and we risk being eclipsed and even being made obsolete. Even in our personal lives what we find produces success will often plateau or wane. This is our discussion. Find Doug at dougpaul.org and check out his book, Ready or Not: Kingdom Innovation for a Brave New World. Next...Doug Paul and drilling in on innovation. BEST QUOTES "The big idea around the book is that innovation is a skill set you can learn.""On a spiritual level, pastors were seeing that there is a big difference between church being programs that we run versus church being a group of people that God has trusted us to lead.""I wanted to dig into the history and the stories of the people of God to write something that would be able to change both people's minds and hearts at the same time.""There is gold that COVID is giving us right now if we will do a little bit of extra work each week to think through, what have I learned this week from where we are that we can multiply into the future?""From 6:00-8:00 everyday is just with our family. There are no screens, we are just being together.""One of the common myths in our culture is that you need to have made your mark by the time you are 30.""What if the best ministry of your life happens when you are between the ages of 55 and 75 and everything that happens before 55 is just training?" But along the way, that redemptive, adaptive movement began to institutionalize, leaving us change-averse and frozen in time. In this episode of the Everyday Disciple Podcast, Caesar welcomes innovation strategist and author, Doug Paul, who uses surprising stories and cultural analysis to help explain five phases of Kingdom innovation and how leaders in the Church today can start leading change and innovation. In This Episode You’ll Learn: What true innovation is and who are the best innovators. Why most leaders haven't really innovated their churches during the pandemic. 5 (easy to grasp) phases of innovation. How to get the training and tools you need to begin to lead change. (https://everydaydisciple.com/subscribe) (https://everydaydisciple.com/subscribe) From this episode: "Innovation is a skill and it’s a muscle you can grow. You can learn how to do innovation. You weren’t born to have it or not have it, and even people who think they're naturally good at it have a lot to learn. Fundamentally, in the world in which we now live, the Christian leader missing the skill of innovation is like a carpenter missing a hammer. It’s not the only skill in the toolbelt, but not having it moving into the future, will be indefensible." Each week the Big 3 will give you immediate action steps to get you started.Facebook (http://everydaydisciple.com/facebook) and take part in the discussion! As we learn to balance our life according to the principle of UP / IN / OUT, we mature in our faith, grow as disciples, and form cultures where people look and act more like Jesus. Thanks to Doug Paul of Summit church for the video resource.

The quality and accessibility of master data is a critical but often overlooked pillar of all successful procurement teams. Complex and difficult to master, it's often left to the side while we pursue "easier" transformation and improvement initiatives.  Technology is now opening up a new world of possibilities for converting seemingly disparate data into useable intelligence by taking new approaches - leading to more effective sourcing and category strategies. I’m joined on the show today to discuss the mastery of your master data by Doug Paul, a GM of Sourcing at General Electric's Global Operations Group. Doug has responsibility for developing, improving & standardizing shared sourcing processes, operations & tools across all of General Electric. I've got to know Doug well over the past 12 months - as you will hear in the interview, he is passionate about the role of procurement, but also the need to continually improve, challenge our assumptions, and to take control of our own destiny. Towards the end of our discussion, we also try out a new feature - the quickfire round.  I’d love to know if you think this should become a regular feature!

Erin Rose and Doug Paul lead us in our desire to follow the Lord completely. John 17:6-26 (ESV)“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

Often people see discipleship as a disconnected reality to mission. In this workshop we'll look at the principles Jesus used to disciple people in mission and give you direction on how to do this yourself. In addition, we'll give stories from the United States and around the world along with practical insight on how using the discipleship vehicle of a Huddle has unleashed a missional movement.
