Hello Truth-Seekers and welcome to another episode of Truth Wanted. This week, Fox Mulder returns to aid Objectively Dan on his quest for truth. Hmm? Correction, It's Ross Blocher of the Oh No Ross and Carrie podcast!First up is a returning caller, it's Tony in Mexico, asking about the dangers of Scientology. Ross compares their hard sales tactics to hi-pressure timeshare tactics, and gives us a glimpse into how Scientology sells themselves to new candidates. We get a brief history of the faith, before Dan flat-out recommends against attending a “new members” seminar. Careful Tony!Next is Bob from Colorado, he claims that psychics at two different times and fairs gave him a similar past life regression story. Bob was a Vietnam-era sniper, and tells us that he has an interest in marksmanship and ballistics. Fascinating coincidence? Ross suggests cold reading techniques may be at play here. Bob's psychics also told him he would marry a General's daughter, and he's married two. Ross thinks Bob had more to do with his marital outcome than the psychic, and all three agree that if you discount the 95% of predictions that weren't accurate, the remainder isn't that impressive. Even a broken clock is correct twice a day!Our Patron of the week is calling! Sheila is an atheist, but still has some superstitious idiosyncrasies, and wants to know why she might be holding on to these. Dan points out that humans are creatures of habit, and habits can be tough to shake. Ross offers that pattern seeking is a human trait, a trait that science and superstition share. Keep that inner dialogue going, and keep asking questions Sheila. You're never too old to grow as a person, all the best, thank you for supporting the show!Sprout from Canada is looking for tips on how to investigate like Ross and Carrie do on their podcast. Ross recommends taking notes, and approaching any topic with an open mind. We're not debunkers, we're truth seekers! Both hosts recommend being kind, funny, and original. Can't wait to see what you come up with Sprout!Jenn in Australia believes that in a past life she was a tree, killed by a strangler fig, and offers her fear of this particular plant as evidence. Jenn does seem to be aware of how preposterous this sounds, but asks our hosts to examine their phobia. Ross points out that consciousness can't exist without a brain, and since plants don't have brains, we'd need a mechanism for how a tree's experience transfers to a human. We think there's another explanation for this phobia Jenn, and perhaps you do too. (Show Notes Writer: This plant is terrifying, no judgement here Jenn).
It’s Friday which means another episode of Truth Wanted is hitting your screens right on schedule. This week, ObjectivelyDan is joined by Ross Blocher!First up for the night is Will from TX. As a former Catholic, the caller is struggling to have a conversation with their still believing sister who is having personal experiences in the form of visions and dreams. One of the ways to continue the conversation is to not outright deny their experiences, but to insert a bit of gentle nuance into the discussion to possibly get them to ask some questions about their beliefs.Next up is Joe from VA who wants to run some street epistemology on Dan. In the interview shown in the previous episode of Truth Wanted (Episode 04.01), Anthony Magnabosco is shown interviewing Dan back when he was still a believer. The caller wants to know what part of that conversation was most convincing to Dan.Entering onto the field now is number 3, Adam from IL. The caller wants to know more about Street Epistemology and if it is just a tool to create more Atheists. SE is less about convincing theists that a God isn’t real than it is guiding people to questions why they believe the things that they do (not limited to a God belief). Also sidenote, the caller should familiarize themselves with the “No True Scotsman Fallacy.” It isn’t cool to dismiss other people’s experiences as Christians just because they don’t believe anymore, or when they did, they weren’t a part of your specific denomination. Instead, please potentially consider why there are so many different denominations with so many conflicting views. That was a great show wasn’t it! We sure hope you thought so! If you want to see more why not check out some of the ACA’s other great shows? It’s still a crazy world out there right now so until next week, stay safe out there!

Welcome to Love YA Like Crazy! You're listening to a special episode recorded by one of the two hosts, Jacob Haller, while he was at PodX in Nashville. For this episode, Jake talked to Ross Blocher and Carrie Poppy of 'Oh No Ross and Carrie' about some books that were important to them when they were young. Note that the discussion includes spoilers for Louise Fitzhugh's 'Harriet the Spy' and its sequel 'The Long Secret', and 'Maniac Magee' by Jerry Spinelli. This discussion was recorded on Jake's phone in a semi-secluded corner by an elevator at PodX, and we apologize for the resulting sound quality. Thanks to Shaenon K. Jake recently went to the PodX podcasting conference in Nashville, and talked to some of the podcasters there about YA books, or books that were important to them when they were young. Starting tomorrow, and continuing every week until we run out of interviews, we'll be posting these in the feed. This episode gives you a little sneak peek at these discussions. Here's what you can look forward to: Lee LeBreton of 'Within the Wires' discussing Madeleine L'Engle's 'Many Waters' Jeffrey Cranor, also of 'Within the Wires', on Sarah Maria Griffin's 'Spare and Found Parts' and Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland' Julie Shapiro, executive director of Radiotopia, and Carrie Poppy of 'Oh No Ross and Carrie', each talking about Louise Fitzhugh's 'Harriet the Spy' Hal Lublin of 'We Got This with Mark and Hal' talking about Piers Anthony's 'Xanth' books, among other things Ross Blocher of 'Oh No Ross and Carrie' discussing Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli Simone de Rochefort of 'The Polygon Show' talking about Libba Bray's 'A Great and Terrible Beauty' Allegra Frank, also of 'The Polygon Show', discussing Andrew Clements's 'Things Not Seen' These recordings were mostly made in a recording room that Netflix provided, except for Ross and Carrie's, which was recorded on my phone as we crouched down in a semi-secluded corner by an elevator. These are people from some of Jake's favorite podcasts, and he was very excited (and somewhat terrified) to talk to them! We hope you enjoy the discussions. Thanks to Shaenon K. Ross and Carrie choose their own religion! Ross Blocher and Carrie Poppy are the hosts of “Oh No, Ross and Carrie!”, a podcast where they investigate religion, fringe science, and other spiritual events by immersing themselves in them. On this episode, we talked about what they’ve learned from their investigations, what has turned out to be surprisingly true, and their own journeys from evangelical Christian backgrounds to the skeptics they are today (even though Carrie hates that term). We also talk about the nature of belief, critical thinking, laughter yoga, and dog birthdays. I feel obligated to say that I was very tired when we record this. I had just gotten off a plane from New York to LA, and Carrie Poppy was kind enough to let me crash on her couch for the night. We turned on the mics and started podcasting almost immediately, because hey, why not? We sat at the dining room table, which was littered with all manner of herbs and over the counter remedies. Research for the latest episode of Oh No, Ross and Carrie, the Max Fun podcast Poppy hosts with fellow skeptic Ross Blocher, which features a broad range of investigations, from organized religion to oxygen bars. The episode the pair were currently preparing for on the topic of nootropic smart drugs was a relative walk in the park after a multi-part series in which the pair infiltrated the Hollywood wing of the Church of Scientology, an act that garnered the attention of a number of best of podcasting lists -- and the church itself. Naturally, we start the conversation with talk of plane crashes.
