I'm back!! I share some of the stressors I've had and much of the stories I've been reading these past few weeks. These stories include (roughly in order of discussion): Consider Phlebas by Ian M. Banks, The Long Earth series by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter, House of Suns by Alistair Reynolds, and the webfiction Ar'Kendrithyst by Arcs. And I forgot to talk about A Half-Built Garden by Ruthanna Emrys... which is a shame because it was my favorite novel of the lot! Definitely have to get into it in the next episode.
In this episode, Christina talks with hacker and enthusiastic solarpunk Paweł Ngei about the power of solarpunk narratives to open our eyes to the ways in which we do things and invite us to critically examine them. Why is tech built this way? Who are we disenfranchising by not having more or different designs for things? Who are we handing over too much power over our lives to mindlessly letting them thrust their tech into our lives without us knowing how it works? What happens when a solarpunk world is visited by aliens?Ruthanna Emrys writes stories for monsters - stories that challenge the role of the monster as something “other,” something to be feared. Her latest novel, A Half Built Garden, is a story of high-stakes interspecies negotiations, of hope and progress despite immense challenges, and of bridging the divide between the familiar and the alien.Ruthanna Emrys (website, and links to buy the book): http://ruthannaemrys.com/Support Solarpunk Now!: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/solarpunkcastFor show notes and more info about this episode, click here.Follow me on Twitter: @solarpunkcastMastodon: @solarpunkcast@spore.socialSupport the show

For this episode we read The Litany of Earth by Ruthanna Emrys. It's a sequel of sorts to The Shadow Over Innsmouth and thus we must also tangle with the thorny legacy of HP Lovecraft.
In this episode of the Strange Horizons podcast, editor Anaea Lay presents Ruthanna Emrys's “Cassandra Draws the Four of Cups.” You can read the full text of the story here.
Share spring rolls with Ruthanna Emrys, author of the H. P. Lovecraft-inspired Innsmouth Legacy series, as we discuss the ways in which her first exposure to Lovecraft was through pop culture references rather than the original texts, the reasons for the recent rise of Lovecraft recontextualisation, how tea with Jo Walton convinced her she was right to go ahead and write her first Innsmouth Legacy novel, why she ascribes to the tenets of the burgeoning Hopepunk movement, her love of writing X-Men fanfic and her hatred of gastropods, how she recovered from a college professor's unconstructive criticism, the time George Takei was nice to her at age 8 after she attended her first con in costume on the wrong day, and much more.
