Every Broadway season, one of the most heated discussions about the Tony Awards centers the snubs—those notable shows that didn't get any nominations. This year they include musicals like The Wiz, Harmony, and The Heart of Rock and Roll. Another one of those shows that was left out made history as being the first Broadway musical to cast autistic actors in autistic roles, and it was called How to Dance in Ohio, based on a Peabody Award-winning documentary of the same name. And today's guest is one of the stars of the musical, Conor Tague. The musical dates back to early 2018 when the legendary Harold Prince announced he was working on a musical adaptation of the film. But after Prince died the following year, it was Sammi Cannold, a former guest of this podcast, who took over as the show's director. How to Dance is the real-life story of a group of young autistic adults and their families as they prepare for their first-ever formal dance. They face challenges and changes to their routines, and they experience all the things you go through when it comes to formal dances and asking someone out on a date—the love and stress and excitement of it all. The musical began previews on November of 2023, officially opening the following month, and played through February of this year.  Though completely shut out of the Tony Awards, How to Dance did receive Drama Desk nominations for Outstanding Book of a Musical (Rebekah Greer Melocik) and Outstanding Lead Performance (Liam Pearce). Conor and I talk about his experience with the show, but we also dig into his background and how his autism may be a unique and important part of him, but it's also just one facet of who he is as person and performer. ---------- Subscribe to get early and ad-free access to the full conversation with each guest, which includes the auditions stories that are only available to subscribers. And in this bonus interview episode, two of the guests from the Evita episode share more stories and insights. The first one is actress Christina DeCicco, who played Eva Peron twice a week in the 2012 Broadway revival of Evita. She talks about her audition process, what rehearsals were like, and how she went about portrayed this iconic leading lady. I even open up a bit about my own time on the national tour and some of the parallels we both had in our respective productions. Next, is Sammi Cannold, a director and long-time fan of the musical itself. She was actually in Argentina when we had this conversation, and she'll be sharing what she's learned about this larger-than-life woman, who even decades later is still very much a part of the fabric of Argentina life and culture. This research has informed each of the three productions she's directed of Evita. The latest one was at American Reperatory Theater in Summer of 2023, which the Boston Globe called "Exceptional! In April of 2012, the very first revival of Evita came to Broadway, having done the same in London six years earlier. And in both productions, the title role featured a relatively unknown actress to Western audiences: Elena Roger. She followed a select few chosen to take on one of the most difficult female roles in musical theater. First, there was Julie Covington, then Elaine Paige, Patti LuPone, and Madonna. Among this group of women, Madonna was the only one to have already been a celebrity when she took on the role. As for the other ladies, it was Evita that introduced them to the world and turned them into stars. Such is the power of this musical, with book and lyrics by Tim Rice and the iconic score by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Whether it's the 2006 West End revival or its subsequent transfer to Broadway in 2012, neither version even lasted a year, a far cry from their respective original productions. So how did this revival differ from those previous productions? And why couldn't it recapture the fame and longevity of the original? In this episode, we'll explore the history of this high-flying adored musical and the factors that led to its Broadway revival. We'll also highlight some challenges this production faced and the impact Evita continues to have on audiences today. My guests are the mother/daughter team of Sammi Cannold & Dori Berinstein, who are the co-directors and co-producers of the new documentary The Show Must Go On -- a film that I found to be both fascinating and very moving. Sammi Cannold is a theater director whose recent projects include Evita at New York City Center, Endings at NY Theater Workshop, Ragtime on Ellis Island and Violet on a bus at American Repertory Theatre. In 2019 she was named one of Forbes Magazine's “30 Under 30 in Hollywood and Entertainment”. When in March of 2020 the global pandemic shut down live theatre around the world, South Korea was the only country that did not close its theaters. The Show Must Go On primarily follows the companies of two Korean productions -- The Phantom of The Opera and CATS -- which demonstrated how live theater could continue to operate safely in spite of the pandemic. In this episode you will hear the story of how Sammi journeyed to Korea to document the incredible difficulties, challenges and ultimate triumphs of these two productions. And we will also look at why Korea was able to to do something that theaters in the West could not accomplish. For the first time ever, we have two amazing guests on the show. Dori Berinstein and Sammi Cannold directed and produced the Apple TV Documentary, The Show Must Go On which chronicles the race against time to save live theater in the wake of a global pandemic. The film focuses on some of the theater-makers determined to win the race.  In March of 2020 and for the first time in history, the performing arts were decimated worldwide when theater shut down indefinitely in every country except one: South Korea. From the frontlines in Seoul, this film follows a company of artists involved in two theatrical productions--the World Tour of The Phantom of The Opera and the South Korean Tour of Cats--two of the productions that pushed ahead safely during the pandemic and helped show the way forward. And a continent away in the UK, the film simultaneously follows Andrew Lloyd Webber, composer of Cats and The Phantom of the Opera among others. Webber used the example set by his Korean colleagues to fight for theater's future on the West End and beyond.  The Show Must Go On chronicles the survival of the performing arts and the worldwide resuscitation of an artform with the fate of a global industry at stake. But more importantly, the film tells a human story - one of the resilience of storytellers and their determination to come together to heal, create, and inspire. Stream The Show Must Go On on Apple TV+ today! Our guests have inspiring bios: Dori Bernstein is an Emmy Award-winning documentarian, a four-time Tony Award®-winning Broadway producer, and an Olivier Award® winner. There's a way, find a way! Look for hidden opportunities. Be open minded, they are there.  “How you do it” doesn't have to be the way you get it done.  Use tech to your advantage. Everything you need may already be at your fingertips. Once again, community is often what makes all the difference. Get out there and grow your network from a heart centered space.  Use your skills to help with your creative endeavors. All of your skills are useful. Make the big ask, you never know when someone will say YES! Focus on the storytelling, not the platform.  Be willing to throw yourself into the fire and risk failure in order to create magic.  Never think of any project as a failure. Everything leads to some new knowledge and opportunity.  Design your own metrics for success.  Artistry is always about changing the world.  Art heals. Learn more about your ad choices.
