In mid-October, our Main Street Monday series took me to Saratoga Springs, NY! This is a city rich in history and culture. Over the last few decades, the city, its retailers, and their Downtown Business Association have done many things to create a fun community that has allowed businesses to grow in the downtown area. I was able to interview retailers Heidi Owen West and Maddy Zanetti as part of my visit. Both West and Zanetti are extremely involved in the downtown and strive to see their community grow. From the fun art series to creative window displays to fantastic retail establishments, Saratoga Springs was a tremendous visit for Main Street Monday.https://www.heartonmainstreet.org/https://www.heartonmainstreet.org/past-webinarshttps://www.impressionssaratoga.com/https://lifestylesofsaratoga.com/https://carolineandmain.com/https://www.unionhallsupplyco.com/

Toga! Toga! We're heading to upstate New York to cover Pearl Jam's last show to date at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, aka SPAC. It's a widely popular venue, one in which jam bands such as Phish and Dave Matthews Band have frequented, and as Ed would mention in this show, it was an early Lollapalooza tour venue back in 1992 when they played alongside Soundgarden. Glad he kept the shirt. This show comes right off the heels of a major turning point from the Binaural tour - The Jones Beach shows. The legendary Daughter performance with the It's OK tag, forever enshrined on the Touring Band 2000 DVD, marked as a healing moment for the band during the toughest period in their history. This show getting off to a hot start was a sign that the band was starting to loosen up and learn how to have a little fun on stage again. Breakerfall, Whipping, Spin The Black Circle, Hail, Hail, Corduroy and In My Tree are the first six songs of the night, and they absolutely do not disappoint. Add in an experimental Rearviewmirror to close the main set and a combination of Black/Yellow Ledbetter to this night, there are a lot of signature moments that make this show stand out. Oh yeah, and the nudist lava lamp inventor... him too. We'll hear stories from our Patron, Andrew Famulare, as well as Patrick and Brian from Hallucinogenic Recipe who were both at this show in the same section, but didn't know each other at the time. They'll share their hilarious memory from this show from both perspectives. And our Gear Guru segments this week look into Stone's Rickenbacker impact on Breakerfall, an interesting octave change in the Spin The Black Circle chorus, and why the combo of Black and Ledbetter worked so well, including love for the Nobody's Fault But Mine Led Zepplin tag. Artist bio https://www.bethannmoran.com/   @pasmeche on instagram   I work from namely from direct observation, meaning I stand within or before my subject. It is challenging taking large canvases on site into the landscape but I work this way to experience the subject first hand. Sometimes a larger painting will take two weeks or more and sometimes I need to return to the same spot the following year to finish.  Typically, I also bring the painting into the studio and continue to work on it from memory.  The experience of the natural world is always woven into the work I am attempting to make.  I am constantly balancing what the brush work expresses, my imagination and my perception of the subject.  Sometimes while painting,  language leaves me.  Sometimes I feel like I disappear. Eventually a mosquito will bite me or the bitter cold is too much and I return.   When  the painting is complete the viewer can re-see, re-experience what I saw; and then be drawn repeatedly into a contemplation of everything within the painting and within themselves.  My hope is that the paintings will resonate with people and in some way will help them deepen their appreciation for the natural world and assists them on their path toward joy.   My work has garnered awards and is held in private, corporate and public collections. My paintings have been exhibited in regional, national exhibitions including plein air events, galleries and museums. I was awarded a Hudson River Fellowship/ Grand Central Atelier in 2014 and a La Napoule artist residency in France in 2016. I have painted during our families travels to Scotland and had the privilege to do master copy works at the National Gallery Scotland, National Gallery London. My work is represented by Tory Folliard Gallery, Milwaukee, Wi and Edgewood Orchard Gallery, Door County, Wi.   I earned a BA from St. Norbert College and an  MFA from University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, where I was mentored by John Colt and Tom Uttech among others.  I enjoyed a long teaching career and have taught at University Wisconsin Milwaukee, University Wisconsin Whitewater, Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs NY, among others and I continue to enjoy teaching workshops.       I am married to the poet Patrick J. By the early 1950s, John Prophet was discovering all too well that steam engines were being dropped from mainline railroads all over the country. Even at Buffalo in 1951, John was seeing more diesel engines on the tracks of the New York Central than he had noticed only a year earlier. In order to try and capture steam engines still in use, John began to venture out of the Western New York area and into localities where railroads like the Erie and Delaware & Hudson were still running steam. This episode features the only recording John made of an Erie steam engine; in Port Jervis, NY. After that, he went to Saratoga Springs, NY to catch several freight and passenger trains still being pulled by steam on the D&H.

Hello listeners, Today's guest is Catherine Hover. We had a great conversation at Palette Cafe, which she founded. Our conversation was actually in a phone booth room. Yep, they have a working pay phone there. Catherine hails from New Orleans and after moving to Saratoga she missed some of the social/networking groups that she was part of. So, as all great entrepreneurs do, she started several social/networking opportunities in her new location. Her first was "Paint and Sip", a place to gather, do some painting with the guidance of an instructor, and drink some wine. She currently has two Paint and Sip locations. Most recently she started the Palette Cafe. A place for women to gather, socialize and network. I really enjoyed our conversation and found Catherine to be inspiring! Our post-July4th Deadpod features the second set from the band's performance at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs NY during the Summer tour of 1985. This second set starts out with an interesting Stranger->Eyes->GDTRFB combo.. which is very tasty.. personally I enjoy the Black Peter (not everyone's cup of tea) and the Lovelight.. the JBG encore is far from the best, but Jerry follows it up with a very nice Baby Blue to send the crowd out happy.. I hope you enjoy this week's show! 6/27/85 - Grateful Dead Saratoga Performing Arts CenterSet 2:TuningFeel Like A Stranger ->Eyes Of The World -> Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad -> Man Smart, Woman Smarter -> Drums -> Space -> Truckin' -> Spoonful -> Black Peter -> Turn On Your Lovelight Encore:Johnny B.
