2016 was a turning point in the world of the X-Men movies. After the big success of 2014's X-Men: Days Of Future Past, 20th Century Fox spent big on X-Men: Apocalypse, and big things were expected of it. On the other hand, it had taken a gamble with a different X-Men-related project, Deadpool. Things would not go the way that the studio had originally expected. The story of Scent Of A Woman meanwhile is wrapped up in the push for Al Pacino to finally get an Oscar, after several unsuccessful nominations. Not bad, for a film that originally had Jack Nicholson in line for the lead role... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Al Pacino won his first Academy Award for his role as Lt. Col. Frank Slade, a cranky, demanding, foul-mouthed guy who also happens to be blind. Oh yes, 1992's Scent of a Woman had old Oscar in its sights (no pun intended). The grandstanding worked. Oodles of Oscar nominations and big bucks at the box office soon followed. But now, decades later, does this movie wear out its Thanksgiving welcome before we can say, “Hoo-ah”? Is Charlie (Chris O'Donnell) being noble or a nitwit in his efforts to protect his classmates? And why is this movie over two and a half hours long? The Old Roommates tango around these questions and more, all through their middle-aged lens. Listen to this. In this episode, we dive into the powerful themes and emotional depth of Scent of a Woman with our guest, Saylor Cooper, host of the Hope Without Sight Podcast, founder of Real Variety Radio, and a Mass Communications major. Together, we reflect on the key moments and moral complexities of the film, unpacking its layered storytelling and incredible performances. We begin by examining Charlie's moral dilemma, where the young prep school student faces an impossible choice: stick to his principles or betray them to protect his future. The internal conflict Charlie endures serves as a powerful exploration of integrity and the pressures of conformity, which resonated deeply in our discussion. Saylor shared how this moment highlights the universal challenge of choosing what's right over what's easy.Next, we discuss Frank's borderline plea to endure, as Al Pacino's portrayal of the blind, retired Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade reveals a man on the edge of despair. Frank's struggle to find meaning and purpose leads to some of the film's most heart-wrenching moments, as his pain underscores the importance of human connection and self-worth. Saylor and I reflected on how Frank's plea is a raw, emotional plea for resilience in the face of life's darkest moments. We then explored the film's central message of "living life spontaneously," embodied by Frank's philosophy and his determination to teach Charlie the value of seizing the moment. From their escapades in New York City to Frank's infamous tango scene, the film beautifully captures the essence of living life with passion, even when faced with adversity. This theme became a focal point of our discussion, as we considered how the film encourages audiences to embrace life's unpredictability. Finally, we delve into Frank's role as a mentor to Charlie, guiding him through a transformative journey. Frank's tough-love approach and moments of vulnerability push Charlie to grow and stand up for what he believes in. Saylor and I discussed how their dynamic is not only central to the film but also a reminder of the impact one person can have on another's life, even in the most unexpected ways.In conclusion, Scent of a Woman is a masterful exploration of morality, resilience, and human connection. The film's timeless themes and unforgettable performances continue to inspire audiences, reminding us of the importance of integrity, spontaneity, and mentorship. Join us as we reflect on this cinematic classic and the lessons it imparts.
Frank is a retired Lt. Col. in the US army. He's blind and impossible to get along with. Charlie is at school and is looking forward to going to college. To help pay for a trip home for Christmas, he agrees to look after Frank over Thanksgiving. Frank's niece says this will be easy money, but she didn't reckon on Frank spending his Thanksgiving in New York.
Send us a textThis week, we conclude our tribute series to the legendary Philip Seymour Hoffman. Nick and Bella spotlight three of Hoffman's most memorable supporting performances. Philip Seymour Hoffman never needed an exuberant amount of screen time to leave his mark on a film. Often, his supporting roles left as big of an impact as the leading characters. First up is one of his earliest roles in the Academy Award-winning film Scent Of A Woman. Next, Hoffman lights up the screen with an uncomfortable amount of energy, charisma, and tension in the juicy 1999 mystery The Talented Mr. Ripley. Finally, we get to explore Hoffman's outstanding comedic chops as he portrays Brandt in the cult classic The Big Lebowski. Also, our producer Sonja Mereu discusses one of Philip's lesser-known films, Pirate Radio (aka The Boat That Rocked). Warning - this episode contains an ungodly amount of Pacino impressions. Listener discretion is advised. “Actor's actor” and local boy from Queens David Krumholtz becomes the second cast member of Oppenheimer and first person immortalized in Griffin's beloved Disney Emoji Blitz to guest on our Martin Brest series as we talk about 1992's dire SCENT OF A WOMAN. Would this movie be less terrible if it were at least 40 minutes shorter? What if the original first choice for Lt. Col. Frank Slade - Jack Nicholson - had done this film instead of Pacino? What if we swapped Philip Seymour Hoffman for the charisma vacuum that is Chris O'Donnell? Sadly, we can only imagine these scenarios. Join us for lots of candid Krumholtz anecdotes, a scorching hot take regarding the diner scene in Heat, and more! Hoo-ah! We watched Scent of a Woman (1992) and to our surprise, it's a decent menswear film! Not only is there some classic tailoring but there is a swath of ivy as well. This week, on the first half of Outlook and another mixed bag episode, speaking of oyster, Barry and co-host Kerry share about a recent guide dog refusal by a local cab driver in Kerry's town. On the second half we share three examples of different audio described versions, same scene, of the 1992 film “Scent of a Woman” about a character, who is depressed, and Celebrating one last hurrah in New York City, who was the first big representation of blindness for those of us living with the condition to see ourselves represented by on screen. We three discuss our feelings about the movie, its famous tango scene, and the different styles of audio description, UK vs North American.

Al Pacino plays a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel who needs a babysitter. Turns out, he has his own plans for Thanksgiving weekend and takes Chris O'Donnell on a wild ride while he has his own issues back at School A classic, iconic film, that Trev's never seen - so Stephen takes him on the ride.
Diamond Dogs' Chris joins KATG for the first time to help discuss the evolution of education, how the smell of women's tears lowers men's aggression, and Craig Klein not knowing how to restaurant.
Discussion continues of Keith's concern that women don't particularly enjoy giving head, turning partly to the question of whether they're enjoyment of sex would be enhanced by "leaning into" a more submissive role rather than focusing primarily on emotional closeness. For the holidays, Keith made an effort to find a lady-friend willing to come with him on a Caribbean getaway. As he's not in a relationship right now, it would have to be a somewhat spur-of-the-moment thing, and he found it pretty difficult to find anyone willing to take him up on it. This leads into some conversation about dating strategies more broadly, and the reality that the male-female balance of power shifts in the man's direction as time passes generally: 20-year-old women hold all the cards, but by age 35 it's a different world. To wrap up the episode, we take on such perennial questions as female wetness, and the length that vagina odor tends to remain on the penis after sex, even after showering. We get a lot of our questions from Reddit, so for our listeners' enjoyment, here are links to some of the questions we discussed this week: https://ymmv.me/149/mouth https://ymmv.me/149/wetness https://ymmv.me/149/smell Twitter: @ymmvpod Facebook: ymmvpod Email: ymmvpod@gmail.com

Inspired by the 4th of July (I guess), we go all the way back to the beginning and take a look at the very first Chickweed strips. Brooke Mac-El-Dee comes right out of the gate with Juliette talking with Edda about physical attractiveness and how that's very important to catch a man. Edda at this point is maybe 12, so this is a TOTALLY NORMAL AND APPROPRIATE conversation for a mother to have. But don't worry. Things get WAY MORE inappropriate pretty quickly. Isn't it comforting to know that this horrible comic strip was horrible in exactly the same ways from the beginning? Following up Juliette's lessons in female attractiveness, pre-teenage Edda already expresses what can only be described as Championship Level Body Dysmorphia. Classic Mac-El-Dee! There's a whole Sunday strip about a fly. Twelve-year-old Amos, who looks either drowned or electrocuted or both, spends an entire strip sniffing Edda...at her request of course. Sophia Loren's "bosom" is described as "proud." Edda shames her mother for not getting boned on a date. Then later the two of them celebrate Juliette finding her boyfriend's "button" and "pushing it." Which I suppose means she had sex. Edda encourages Amos to imagine random adults they're looking at naked. So that's totally cool also. And finally we spend about ten solid minutes trying to figure out what "I'll just serve you a colossal jong-jong" means. The Chickweed strips we discuss this episode: Juliette teaches Edda about the necessity of being attractive and Edda expressing her complicated body dysmorphia ARE HERE (https://twitter.com/9chickweedRAGE/status/1681133741673172992?s=20). This episode is very late but better late than never. The siren in the background was very distracting for Dave for a while but he settles in and podcast magic occurs. Crazy magical twist end to this episode... like, wow. Shawn is finally given the credit he deserves of being one of the best party guests ever recorded. Dave only manages to wedge 'Boston,' into the conversation 11 times. Do you trust your parents??? This doesn't come up on the podcast episode but think about it. Shawn points out that all podcasts are background noise so the content doesn't need to be good. Really solid point Shawn.
