Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind, translated by John E. Woods, chosen by Iszi Lawrence Two Serious Ladies by Jane Bowles, chosen by Joe Dunthorne Oh William! by Elizabeth Strout, chosen by presenter Harriett GilbertHistorical fiction author and broadcaster Iszi Lawrence adores the sensational novel Perfume, and has done since she was a teenager. For her, it immerses her in another world and is wonderfully cynical about the futility of chasing ultimate fulfilment through creating art and performing to a crowd. The poet and novelist, author of Submarine, Joe Dunthorne chooses the forgotten cult classic Two Serious Ladies. It makes him happy because every sentence is a surprise, and that makes him want to write. But he admits that it's not for everyone. And Harriett's choice is Oh William! by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Elizabeth Strout. Which prompts the discussion, can you love a book if you loathe the central character?Produced by Beth O'Dea for BBC Audio Bristol Follow us on instagram: agoodreadbbc

Legendary Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain said Patrick Süskind's novel “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer” was his favourite book, probably because the protagonist, Grenouille, has such a murderous hankering for the smell of teen spirit. The story follows Grenouille, who is, in turn, following his preternatural nose through 18th-century France. Born odourless and orphaned in a Paris slum, Grenouille can smell everything except himself. Entranced by the art of perfumery amidst the miasma of the city our anti-hero sets out to learn his craft, but everything changes when he gets his first whiff of love. Some of the books and authors discussed in this episode include: "Perfume" by Patrick Süskind “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” by Robert Louis Stevenson “A Passage North” by Anuk Arudpragasam "In Search of Lost Time, Volume 2: In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower" by Marcel Proust Additional segments throughout the podcast include: Inner Shelf Fact or fiction What are you reading? There's a mere trio of Bad Dads for you this week with both Howie and Peter Andre absent for various trivial and unimportant reasons. The Top 5 Movies with a French Connection is quite possibly one of the least well-defined or most open to interpretation topics we've ever had on the podcast and each of us brings something different to the table to chat through, with the conversation steering mercifully, and perhaps surprisingly, clear of berets, baguettes and promiscuous hairy women.PERFUME: THE STORY OF A MURDERER adapts Patrick Süskind's 1985 dark gothic fantasy for the big screen. Ben Whishaw plays the tortured soul Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, born with a superhuman sense of smell and whose only desire is to learn the techniques of perfume-making. This strange tale sees director Tom Tykwer expertly and imaginatively capture the sensation of smell on celluloid, there's notable support from Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman and an ending that almost defies description. But you know us, we'll give it a go.Even if your kids don't watch DOC MCSTUFFINS there's a good chance you have some of the merchandise in your house which is the case for Reegs this week who failed to actually watch the episode in question. And he really should have as Dan's carefully curated episode pick "Into the Hundred Acre Wood" sees a huge comic-book crossover style event with A.A. Milne's Winne The Pooh, the charming fecally referencing bear. We answer the big questions this week such as: where did she get the magic stethoscope? Are the toys sentient and comatose when not animated by the good doctor? And is the Doc going all Shipman on us and actually harming the toys in question? We're still running our CRUELLA giveaway, at this rate we will be running it for the rest of time. If you live in North America and you fancy getting your hands on a digital copy of Disney's latest then just listen to our Cruella episode and let us know how many Dalmations we gave it out of 101.We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review or on our website baddadsfilm.com.Until next time, we remain...Bad Dads

More people should know about the 2006 film "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer." Directed by Tom Tom Tykwer and starring Ben Whishaw, Alan Rickman and Dustin Hoffman, this cat-and-mouse murder story centered in 18th Century France played around with the power human senses before "Birdbox" and "A Quiet Place" received national acclaim. Separate from these recent titles, "Perfume" expands upon an intriguing question: What would an individual do with the ultimate sense of smell? Jean-Baptiste Grenouille chooses a murderous path toward an ultimate, unprecedented goal: Preserving the scent of beauty. The Summer 2020 edition of Popcorn Talk highlights older movies (pre-2010s) that have varying genres, cultures, themes and unique characteristics. Every movie reviewed is a unique gem its own way and totally worth checking out. In this episode of “Popcorn Talk,” Logan Raschke, a senior journalism major at Eastern Illinois University and Fall 2020 senior designer for The Daily Eastern News, reviews “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer."

I personally enjoy the interaction between our big bros and various other colleagues, but if anybody feels like we should get back to our roots and talk shit off the cuff again, I'd be glad to. Our foray into the Halloween-ish continues with serial killers. Clayton's pick: The Element of Crime (Lars von Trier, 1984); Ryan's pick: Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (Tom Tykwer, 2006); Isaac's pick: Man Bites Dog (Remy Belvaux, Andre Bonzel, Benoit Poelvoorde, 1992). Tangents include: sushi, borrowing from Tarkovsky, smell-o-vision, Kurosawa's later years, praise and ambivalence for Christopher Guest, the psychological difference between real and fake violence via stupid people on message boards, snuff films by Mel Gibson and criterion comedies. In reference to the discussion on Man Bites Dog, from IMDB: "According to an essay André wrote, Ben's family didn't know anything about the plot of the film. Ben's mother and grandparents thought they were filming raw footage of Ben, and had no idea that the footage was going to be used in a film in which Ben is a serial killer. Ben's mother was shocked to see her son behind bars, when she comes to visit him in prison." To get involved in the discussion, like us on facebook.com/threefilmegos.
