George Romero is widely regarded as the father of modern zombie films, and his films Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1978), and Day of the Dead (1985) are considered classics of the genre. Romero's films are known for their social commentary and their realistic portrayal of zombies. In this episode, I have the immense pleasure of interviewing Bram Stoker finalist Mark C. Scioneaux, author of “Slipway Grey”, “The Cadaver Chronicles: The Collected Zombie Fiction of Mark C. Scioneaux”, and “Cannibal Fat Camp” to discuss Romero's impact on the zombie genre and the movies spawned by his original Trilogy. We will discuss our favorite Zombie films outside of George Romero's universe, the variation & evolution of the zombie genre, and the current state of zombie films. The episode is informative and Mark is a knowledgeable and engaging interviewee, but we also have a ton of laughs. The one is a must-listen for fans of zombie films and George Romero. And don't forget about our special giveaway! DM me on Twitter @Fave5FromFans and tell me one of YOUR favorite Zombie films, Non-Romero OR Romero. Give me a little bit about why it's your favorite, and we'll randomly select a winner for an autographed copy of Mark's “The Cadaver Chronicles: The Collected Zombie Fiction of Mark C. Scioneaux.” The zombie genre has evolved significantly since Romero's original films. Early zombie films were often low-budget and gory, but they were also very serious in tone. More recent zombie films have taken a more lighthearted approach, and they often feature elements of comedy, action, and horror. The current state of zombie films is very healthy. There are a number of great zombie films being made every year, and the genre continues to evolve and grow. Are you ready to murder your next movie night? Introducing The Horror Movie Night Cookbook: 60 Deliciously Deadly Recipes Inspired by Iconic Slashers, Zombie Films, Psychological Thrillers, Sci-Fi Spooks, and More by Richard S. Sargent [ISBN: 978-1-64604-491-7; Ulysses Press; July 2023], a killer new cookbook offering thoughtful and tasty food and cocktail pairings inspired by the actual content of chilling classics like Jaws, Psycho, Scream, The Conjuring, The Evil Dead, Halloween, and more! If you're looking for kitschy Pinterest recipes like coffin-shaped cookies or zombie finger sandwiches, look elsewhere. With The Horror Movie Night Cookbook, you'll find recipes inspired by horror's most frightening favorites, including: Crawling Steak (Poltergeist) Campfire Sour (The Blair Witch Project) Zombie Baby Kale Salad (Dawn of the Dead) Bloody Floaties (Jaws) Alligator Bites (Crawl) The Mama's Boy Martini (Psycho) And more! GET THE COOKBOOK HERE: https://amzn.to/46XLaAI Unlike other movie-themed cookbooks, The Horror Movie Night Cookbook takes you inside the films. “Inspired by the film itself, the recipes are built around food that is being eaten in the films or iconic lines or characters within. It's not just a cookbook to pull out in October,” Sargent says. “My recipes are thoughtful and creative meals that can be served any time of the year.” Richard S. Sargent was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Some of his earliest memories are of sitting in front of the TV after school, watching reruns of Chiller Theatre with his mom. You can blame her for his obsession with horror films. Richard is an award-winning actor, director, producer, playwright, and filmmaker. You can find some of his short plays published on Amazon via Left Coast Publishing. His short film, Meat, described as “torture porn with bacon,” was released in the horror anthology World of Death. Richard has always been interested in creative cooking. Most of his day jobs were in restaurants and on food trucks. After taking a few cooking classes, Richard decided doing it for a living would take all of the fun out of it. So he found a new way to keep cooking fun: The Horror Movie Night Cookbook! When he isn't doing theater, cooking for his friends, or watching horror films, he is performing with the band he and his husband created—The Green Winter. Cognitive Engineering

There's something about zombies that makes them the perfect genre to explore our apocalyptic fears and anxieties. Films about zombies seem to constantly reinvent the genre in new ways, whilst staying true to some core tenets. But how are zombies actually supposed to work and why are they so popular? In this week's episode, we discuss zombies with friend-of-the-podcast Mikey Lear. We discuss the etymology of the word zombie and the history of zombie films, the cordycep fungus, technozombism and the brain-in-a-vat thought experiment. We ask whether AIs are zombies and Jordan presents his zombie survival plan. Finally, we share our favourite scenes from zombie films. Lees hier meer: Zombie movies prepared you for the pandemic.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Todd Platts (Piedmont Virginia Community College) joins Merle and Lee to discuss his work on zombie films over the past half century. He begins by offering a history of zombie movies and the changing features and definition of the zombie. Todd points to a few key films - in particular George Romero's Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead which eventually resulted in the explosion of zombie-related material in the 21st century. The conversation then moves to discuss disease movies more broadly and in particular in the context of Covid - why did these disease movies become so popular at the beginning of Covid? And what purposes did they serve for their viewers?

Brian introduces the Biblical foundation for zombie stories and how this genre depicts absolute evil in an era of subjective morality. We also explore humanity in the face of the immense trials these films present. We kick the discussion off with the archetypal zombie classic Night of the Living Dead and cover 28 Days Later, how Hollywood depicts “male toxicity” and the military, and conclude with an exploration of true heroics in zombie films. Joining the show today to discuss this theological concern in pop culture is Joshua Wise, scholar, writer, and podcaster who has two books coming out that explore this very subject: No Avatars Allowed, and Eschatology and Pop Culture. Danny and Josh discuss such topics as Mad Max, the Fallout video game, Zombie Films, Kingdom Come, and much more.
