His experience knowing that most photographers aren't well equipped on the business side motivated the founding of Sprout Studios to offer strategies and tools to help photographers run their business. While most photographers start with an interest in photography and then later incorporate the business side, Bryan had been involved with the business side first but moved into photography after splitting up with his partner who was running the photography aspect of things. Starting, he took up photography on a small scale largely involving sports including all the local sports teams which helped him learn, create systems, and build his skill. The biggest challenge about weddings is the fast pace not only due to the number of events going on at each moment but also technical changes you need to make, to adjust for each shot. Bryan describes defined paths for a new photographer: First, you need to understand the technicals, then learn how to do it under pressure, and then learn how to find moments. Emphasizing the importance of having a mindset to put in the time necessary for growth, Bryan stresses the role of 2nd shooting as an intern, to learn the ropes. The rewards of being an entrepreneur are beautiful but it takes work to get them, and the early days are always the hardest. Don't chase the gear.

As Bryan was working as a photographer, he realized he was spending a lot of time going back and forth from system to system in order to accomplish tasks and repeating the same tasks over and over again. He saw a need for process mapping and an all- inclusive management program. A system that would streamline his business. Sprout Studio was the result of Bryan's need to solve a problem and streamline his business. About Bryan Bryan Caporicci is an award-winning wedding and portrait photographer based out of Fonthill, Canada. He teaches at workshops across North America, including industry-leading conventions and conferences such as WPPI, Shutterfest and Canada Photo Convention. Bryan is also the CEO and Founder of Sprout Studio. Become a Problem Solver The best solutions often come from being in the trenches. When things aren't working, we identify the problem and can find a solution. There is no better way to become a problem solver. Outsourcing It's important to realize when we are not an expert at something and hire the people who are experts to do that task for us. For example, attorneys, accountants, bookkeepers. Surrounding yourself with a tribe of experts who excel in areas you don't excel at is key for overall success in entrepreneurship. Marcus Buckingham in The StandOut Assessment goes through the example of we are taught our whole lives to focus on what we aren't good at to become better. As entrepreneurs, play to your strengths and do more of, and outsource the things we aren't good at. Process Mapping Think about where your time is best spent in your business. Is it worthwhile to do all of the activities you are presently doing? Having processes in place could mean you can spend more time on your business for creating more revenue, or it could mean having more time to spend on yourself and with your family. Being able to enjoy the fruits of your labor and take better care of yourself is so important. Start with looking at anything in your business that you do more than once and pass those items through this list of filters. Does this need to be done? Am I the best person to be doing this? Can I automate this to be as hands free as possible? How can I streamline this: templates, scripts, etc.? Systemize action items when in a place of clarity. Have your Process Documented as a Contingency Plan In The EMyth Revisited, Michael E. Gerber, writes about the importance of process documentation for business owners. If you hire someone or in the event you are not able to be present in your business, you need to have your processes mapped out. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are important for maintaining efficient workflows. It also helps to have your processes mapped out and have a second set of eyes review them. As Donald Miller says in Building a Story Brand, assuming can make us ignorant. Don't assume your process is perfect. Someone else may see a better way. Solving Problems If you want to solve a problem, you have to get creative to find the solution. Tap into available resources and the humans you know who can help you. Your network and community are invaluable. If you’ve never heard of Shutterfest, it’s one of the biggest photography conferences in America that’s hosted in Saint Louis, MO. It’s a 3 day event and totally worth every penny no matter what skill level you’re at with photography. Here’s a tip on how I made sure to take home everything I learned while attending the conference.

What are people buying when they’re looking for video? I bet it’s not what you’re thinking. It’s not your videos, believe it or not. There’s so much more to it than that. They’re buying an idea and an experience. Even though you make beautiful videos, none of that matters if you can’t sell the experience you offer. Bryan Caporicci is the lead content creator at Sprouting Photographer and the host of his own podcast. He teaches workshops across North America including at some big conventions and conferences like WPPI, Shutterfest, and Canada Photo Convention. He’s built an incredible business helping photographers in a similar way that we at Studio Sherpas work to help filmmakers. Bryan is a business person first and a creative second, but that’s hard to tell if you only see his work. In this episode, Bryan shakes up the narrative by explaining that your clients are not looking to buy video. They probably think they are, but they’re not. What they want is an unbelievable customer experience that they’ll remember whenever they watch, or even just think about the videos you made for them. We go on to talk about surviving the natural feast or famine cycles of this business. Bryan suggests you lean into the slow season and use it as a break to assess your business and prepare for the next year. Otherwise, you should be proactive to lay the foundation for getting low season work well ahead of time. Either way, you can use this period to your advantage. What do you do to ensure your clients have an unforgettable experience? Drop me a comment on the episode page! In this episode: Identifying your role as an entrepreneur in a creative business What you should actually be selling your clients instead of video One of the most common mistakes that creative entrepreneurs make and how to avoid making it too How to strategically design and implement an effective and compelling brand Useful ideas you can use to survive the ups and downs of high and low seasons Taking the reins of the selling process instead of letting the client be in total control The importance of being intentional with everything you do with your business Quotes: “Business is business. Whether you’re doing filmmaking for a living, whether you’re making pictures for a living, or you’re building software for a living, whatever it is, the basics of business are still the basics of business.” [10:47] “You’re selling the end product and you’re selling who you help your clients become and what you help them do more than you are the actual thing you’re making for them.” [12:19] “You have to realize that marketing has a half-life. It always has a delay. What you market and message and do now, you might not see the effects of that for another two, three, four months.” [32:18] “We as the entrepreneur, as the business owner, as the creative, need to be the ones who are guiding the experience for our clients. If we’re order takers, if we’re bending over backward for them, if we’re reacting to them, there’s no room left for us to say ‘okay, here’s what I’d suggest we do next.” [40:55] Links: Find Bryan at Sprouting Photographer Follow Bryan on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube | Vimeo Business of Photography Podcast Building a Storybrand by Donald Miller Let me know what you want on this podcast by filling out this survey! Ted and Christine lead off the discussion with a recap of their recent adventures at Disney's Hollywood Studios and the infamous Facebook Live recording from the top of the Tower of Terror. Things get a little more heated when they return to the topic of Sal's ShutterFest 2017 Incident, this time in his defense. Whodathunk? Listen in while we bless the heart of a misguided PetaPixel article author.
Back once again with the topic of controversy, Ted and Christine discuss the 10 most controversial moments in the history of photography; expanding on an article written by John Ortved for History.com. To continue with the theme, they then delve into the recent hoop-lah surrounding the ShutterFest competition results.
