I sometimes wonder, while writing these guest photographer posts, how many listeners or viewers actually read them. The truth is it doesn't matter to me, I write them for myself more than anyone else, and I find that trying to put someone's talent into written words really helps me distill my thoughts about their work. Take today's guest, Melody Mellinger, for example... I think my first introduction to Melody's work was back in February of 2020, for Episode 4 of the monthly Behind the Shot Critique shows I used to do with Don Komarechka - damn I miss doing those. After that, I think Melody must have had an image in at least 7 of the critique shows. What she doesn't know is that in every critique show, 28 in all, I always tried to have a mix of shots, so that there would be a few that we might have a lot to contribute to, and others that could work as a reference point, a baseline for what a great shot looks like. Her images were part of that later category. One image I distinctly remember was in critique show 5. It was called Open Wide, and it is a magnificent shot. My first thought was that I wouldn't have anything to say about it - yeah, it's that good - but when I brought it on screen during the show a few things came to mind, and Melody actually went and redid the image with our suggestions. Here's the BEFORE and AFTER for you. Since those first introductions to Melody's work I have become such a fan. What I find fascinating is that Melody's adventures in nature photography didn't begin until 2015, with her first DSLR, a Canon Rebel T6i. What led her to bird photography? Her children. She knew they were going to get tired of being models much faster than she was going to master that Canon, so she moved on to flowers and butterflies, before moving on again to the challenge of backyard songbirds. Since 2022 she has used a Canon 5D Mark IV, and for her bird photography she pairs it with a 100-400mm and a 1.4x extender. Yes, you read that right... a DSLR, not some new mirrorless body, and the shots she is making with it will blow your mind. Next time you think you need new gear, go browse Melody's Instagram. You'll quickly realize that you probably don't, and you can thank her for saving you money. Back in January, Melody posted that she'd won something from FStoppers, and the shot that was featured in their Best Images of 2024 Critique show stopped me in my tracks. I mean, wow... just wow. I knew right then I needed to get her on the show. Join nature and wildlife photographer Melody Mellinger and me as we discuss her amazing bird photography, and as we take a deep dive into the shot that she had featured in the FStoppers Best Images of 2024 Contest. F-Stop Collaborate and Listen - A Landscape Photography Podcast
In this profound episode of F-Stop Collaborate and Listen, host Matt Payne sits down with photographer Alex Armitage to explore an array of poignant topics. Alex has been living out of his Toyota 4-Runner for 3 years straight. He a writer for Fstoppers, and a full-time YouTube creator. Alex reflects on the challenges of sustaining a nomadic lifestyle, the psychological toll of solo travel, and the introspective process that has led him to prioritize genuine human connections and authenticity in his work over catering to algorithms or pursuing financial gain. Environmental consciousness and a critical discussion on the impact of social media on travel locations round out this insightful conversation. Alex also shares his transformational journey in photography, detailing a significant shift from labor-intensive photo editing to a more streamlined approach influenced by the Natural Landscape Photography Awards and a challenge to diversify his photographic subjects. The dialogue delves deep into the ethics of photo manipulation, the pressure content creators face in the digital age to balance informational value with the demand for clicks, and the innate need for transparency in artistry. This cookbook shares Murphy's nutritious, easy-to-digest plant-based recipes created specifically for people suffering with Crohn's and Colitis, based on her own experiences of living with and cooking for Crohn's disease. The cookbook contains over 70 recipes that incorporate dishes designed for maximum nutrition and ease of digestion. In The Plant-Based Crohn's and Colitis Cookbook, you'll find:evidence-based research about plant-based diets in relation to IBD suggestions for how to diversify a plant-based diet a useful list of kitchen staples to buy in bulkcustomisable recipe ideas for breakfasts, dips, sauces, salads, soups, curries, mains and more involved weekend dishesflare-friendly recipes tagged, so that if you're experiencing a bout of bad symptoms you can easily navigate to the recipes which are especially kind on your digestion. As a food and product photographer, Murphy has created a visually bold, dynamic and playful cookbook to contrast the drudgery and tedium of living with this disease. Her hope is to provide an inspiring go-to resource so that sufferers of IBD don't have to wonder in frustration “what can I cook today?” “I created this cookbook to be the resource that I needed, as a vegan, when I was first diagnosed with Crohn's disease. I had never heard of IBD when I received my diagnosis, and my IBD team focused largely on the medical aspect of treatment. I knew that I wanted to pursue a holistic approach to finding remission and that would include taking a close look at what I was eating,” says Murphy.“I really hope this cookbook can help give other people ideas and inspiration if they aren't sure where to start with their diet after receiving a diagnosis. This cookbook is a culmination of the recipes I have tried during times of mild flare, severe flare, and remission. Because this disease is so personalised, I have really tried to encourage people to use the recipes as a jumping off point so they can adapt the ingredients to what their bodies will tolerate.” The Plant-Based Crohn's and Colitis Cookbook goes on pre-sale for £17 on 1st December 2022 with the release on 3rd January 2023. There are rankings in photography that I had no idea even existed. For example, the #1 Fearless Photographer in North America, and Top 3 in the World, for 2021 is Jason Vinson. He's also ranked as one of the Top 100 Fearless Photographers of all time. I am intrigued, and that alone makes me want to meet him. Jason is a multi-award winning wedding and documentary photographer, based out of Northwest Arkansas, and the awards list is impressive, with awards from Junebug Weddings, World Best Wedding Photos, ISPWP, Masters of Wedding Photography, Documentary Family Awards, and more. Recognitions like that bring with them an audience that wants to learn, and Jason is a skilled speaker, instructor, writer, and content creator for establishments such as WPPI, Portrait Master, Rangefinder, PPA, Fstoppers, to name a few. Jason is also a Stella Pro Ambassador, for the Stella Pro line of lighting from Light & Motion. I saw these lights for the first time at this year's WPPI, and again at NAB, and I am seriously impressed. I might need to get some of these. With all of that, I think the part on his "About" page that struck me is this list: lover of extreme sports self proclaimed beer snob dinosaur impersonator mexican food junky technology nerd Three of the five mean we will clearly be friends. As an ambassador for brands such as Stella Pro Lights, Flashpoint, Magmod, Aftershoot, DreambooksPro, Holdfast, DVLOP, and more, Jason is taking the photography community to new heights, and I'm excited to have him on the show. This is The Digital Story Podcast #856, August 16, 2022. Today's theme is "Mastering Your Autofocus." I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue Like many other advanced features on our cameras, we often take autofocus for granted. These days, it works that well. But it's also quite customizable. And it's worth taking a few minutes to wander through the camera's AF menu to tailor its performance to our preferred way of shooting. We'll take a closer look on today's TDS Photography Podcast. AF 1 > AF by half-pressing(button symbol)> S-AF> No. Continuous Autofocus C-AF - Every camera is a bit different in its implementation, but generally speaking, once you indicate what you want in focus, the camera will continuously focus and refocus for you. I've been using this a lot for my event shooting with the OM-1, almost always in burst mode. It's a great way to capture moving action. A variation on this is Tracking Autofocus. This usually narrows the continuous autofocusing to a specific subject. Where it goes, so does the camera's AF sensor, literally "tracking" it across the frame or coming toward you. Canons and Nikons do this particularly well. Canon calls it Servo. Olympus lists it as C-AF+TR. Face and Eye Detection Autofocus - This works well when you only have one or two subjects. The camera identifies their face and/or eyes, and automatically focuses on them. This had improved a lot over the years with things like "right eye" or "left eye" AF. A neat trick is to set this up with back button focus to quickly enable it and have the shutter button use sensor focusing. Subject Detection - Now we're getting into some sweet computational photography. In this mode, the camera will look for the subjects that you've indicated, and focus on them. With my OM-1, the options are: Cars and Motorcycles, Airplanes and helicopters, trains and locomotives, birds, and mammals such as dogs and cats. This works remarkable well. Manual Focus - You take over the focusing chores and use the focusing ring on your lens. Another area that I've increased trust is the number of focusing points that I have active. I used to use a single point for all of my AF work. But now I've gone to a cross pattern that incorporates multiple AF points, and I position it in the frame using the jog stick. This protects me when there is slight subject movements right at the moment of exposure. Final Thoughts I'm trusting my camera's focusing decisions much more than I used to. I'm still a little hesitant with face detection in crowded conditions, but I do use Continuous, Cross Sensor, and Subject Detection regularly. And the results have been very good. Fujifilm confirms X Summit event in New York City on September 8 You can read the entire article on DP Review. Fujifilm has confirmed its next X Summit event will take place in New York City on September 8, 2022. Fujifilm hasn't shared any details about what all we can expect from the event, but we do know we'll be getting our first glimpse of Fujifilm's X-H2 camera. After announcing its new X-H2S mirrorless camera at its X Summit event back in May 2022, Fujifilm teased the X-Trans CMOS 5HR, a 40MP CMOS sensor it said would be used inside the company's forthcoming X-H2 camera system. Fujifilm didn't further elaborate on what else we could expect from the sensor and the X-H2 it will be inside, but the tagline for the X-Trans CMOS 5HR is '40MP, beyond the format boundaries.' Compared to the 'stacked layer, ultra fast motion capture' tagline used for the X-Trans CMOST 5HS sensor used inside the X-H2S, it's clear the 5HR - and the X-H2 as a whole - will likely focus on resolution and image quality above all else. It's unclear if any further announcements will be made beyond Fujifilm's new X-Trans CMOS 5HR sensor and X-H2 camera, but considering Fujifilm's current lens roadmap shows its new XF 56mm F1.2 and XF 30mm F2.8 Macro lens still due for 2022 launches, it's likely we'll see some additional details about these optics. Whatever the case is, we'll be here providing the latest updates as they're announced. In the meantime, mark your calendar for 6pm UTC for September 8, 2022. For anybody based in or near New York, Fujifilm is holding one of its 'Fujikina' events in the city on September 10th. This will include demonstrations and talks by a series of photographers and filmmakers, as well as a chance to get your hands on some of the company's latest gear. This is the first time Fujifilm has held such an event outside Japan. Tell a Friend I was thinking the other day about how people love to tell me about their favorite podcasts, which I appreciate! Then, I started thinking, we should be telling our friends about The Digital Story podcast. It's available on every service that's commonly used: Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Amazon, Spotify, and on and on. If each or our regular listeners told just one friend about this podcast and encouraged them to listen, those should be substantial numbers. So let's try it! Tell a friend about the TDS Photography Podcast. Not Using Auto ISO? You're Missing Out You can read the entire article on FStoppers. Auto ISO is one of those features that I ignored for a long time, considering it not much more than a gimmick. It wasn't until recently that I decided to try auto ISO, and I quickly realized that I was missing out on a valuable and practical feature. As the name suggests, in auto ISO mode, the camera will pick the correct ISO value for the scene being metered. Initially, the idea of letting my camera pick the ISO value seemed not only silly to me, but also like a genuinely bad idea, since I was afraid of winding up with grainy images if the camera chose a very high ISO. I was also firmly entrenched in a film shooter's mentality, since I grew up in an era when using ISO 800 film was pushing the boundaries of grain and typically only used as a last resort. Obviously, the world changed a long time ago, but as many of us know, old habits die hard, especially for us photographers! The beauty of using auto ISO is in the customization possible. The camera doesn't simply pick any appropriate ISO for your exposure, but gives you a number of other options to ensure you don't wind up with extremely grainy or blurry photos. In this article and video, I explain how these features work using a Canon EOS camera, but the basics will work with any camera that has auto ISO, although the customization levels will vary by brand. Once you've set your camera to auto ISO, you can tell the camera the lowest and highest ISO it is allowed to use using the "Auto Range" menu. At first, I thought of the auto range as a high-ISO cap, leaving the low ISO at 100 and setting the high cap at around 3200, which I felt was the most grain I would want to see in my images. I quickly realized that this was not the best way to use the feature and now fine-tune it a bit more based on the specific shooting conditions and not just on acceptable grain levels. By far, the most common way I use auto ISO is when shooting in aperture priority. In this mode, the camera picks the shutter speed and ISO, and I just dial in the aperture that I want. As a portrait photographer, selecting a wide aperture is almost always my main concern, and with two small children, I find this to be one of my favorite ways to shoot. I love not having to worry about the camera picking a shutter speed that is too slow for fast-moving kids or an ISO setting that's so high my images are too grainy. By dialing in my auto ISO settings, I am able to retain creative control in situations where I don't have a ton of time to fiddle with settings, in other words, any situation where kids are involved! I have found myself using Aauto ISO with aperture priority more and more when I leave my studio and work in natural light, whether it's taking some snaps of the kids or a concert in a dimly lit venue. ABOUT PETER I'm excited to tell you my story, but the truth is that I just feel like a guy lucky enough to pick up a camera. It's been a wild ride and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities that I've been given along the way. It all started while I was training for the Olympic Games. I met then DKNY designer, Caggie Simonelli Bradford, who took me under her wing to help me generate sponsorship opportunities. She caught wind of the fact that Ralph Lauren was looking for real sailors for an upcoming Polo Sport ad campaign and the next thing I knew I was sailing in front of Bruce Weber's lens. Little did I know that day would forever change the trajectory of my life. After my Olympic dream came to an end, I moved to New York to try my hand at a modeling/acting/bartending career that seemed to become a pounding of the pavement experiment. It was at that time that Bruce encouraged me to pick up a camera. I started out by photographing portraits of my model friends and landed my first commercial job photographing sneakers for Reebok. I even had a little stint shooting for Levi's on “The Apprentice.” I loved the portrait work I was getting, however, decided to focus all my efforts on my goal of becoming the best headshot photographer I could be. My signature style of simple clean backgrounds, beautiful lighting, and captivating expressions became all the rage. I was recognized numerous times year after year by Backstage magazine as the best headshot photographer in New York City. I was in my own little world, running a bustling portrait studio when these two characters from Fstoppers, Lee and Patrick, walked in my door and turned my operation on its head. Their interview garnered a ton of attention from up and coming photographers, so with some reluctance at first I decided to begin sharing my “special sauce” if you will. This was one decision that instantly turned my life 90 degrees into another direction. My YouTube videos “It's All About the Jaw” and “It's All About the Squinch” went viral, leading to appearances on Good Morning America and Good Day NY. The New York Times featured my ideas in “6 Tips for Better Portraits” and “How to Pose for a Photograph.” Popular Photography went so far as to dub me “The Headshot King.” Like I said earlier, I'm truly grateful for everything that has come my way. The best part is that I absolutely love what I do and none of it seems like work to me. I believe that everything I've worked to accomplish stems from this one thing: That's it in a nutshell and it is my life's work. When you don't find me with a camera in my hand then you will be sure to see me crusin around on a Laser somewhere in the world or spending as much time as I possibly can with my beautiful wife and precious twin daughters. This is The Digital Story Podcast #787, April 20, 2021. Today's theme is "5 Useful Accessories for DIY Photo Projects" I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue When inspiration strikes for a "do it yourself" solution to a gear-related idea that comes to mind, I've found that certain items in my photo accessory drawer are helpful time after time. This week, I'll share five of my favorite DIY accessories, and a case study of putting some of them to use. I hope you enjoy the show. Digital Photography Podcast 787 Tune-In Via Your Favorite Podcast App! Apple Podcasts -- Spotify Podcasts -- Stitcher Podbean Podcasts -- Podbay FM -- Tune In 5 Useful Accessories for DIY Photo Projects In a recent Medium.com article, I wrote about the handiness of my photo accessory drawer. Some folks might call it a junk drawer, but nothing could be further from the truth. I have a number of items in there that have become essential components when I trying to come up with a DIY solution. Here are some of my favorites that I've reached for many times. Step-Up and Step-Down Rings - This is one of the items I reach for regularly. Not only do they help me adapt off-sized filters to lenses, they can connect just about anything that has threads. Lens Mount Adapters Over the years I've collected a set of affordable adapters that will mount practically any vintage lens to my MFT cameras, including Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Contax, and Minolta. Cold Shoe Adapters There are tons of accessories that can be mounted in a cold shoe, from bubble levels, to microphone, to LED lights, and of course, flashes themselves. And the list goes on from there. Old Filters - Way back when, I did a show discussing how I never throw a filter away, because some day it will have use. That includes practically every type in every diameter. Translucent Plastic Film Canisters - I've used these for everything from LED light diffusers to small parts containers. They're also handy for carrying around a set of coins that can serve as both super compact slotted screw drivers and emergency change, with room left over for tripod thread adapters and bolts. I have other things as well, such as a variety of brackets, gaffers tape, and oddball lenses. What are your favorite items in the photo accessory drawer? Stop by our Facebook page and share them. How to Adapt a 20-Year-Old Lens to an X100 (and save $300) As much as I love the 35mm lens on my Fujifilm X100V, sometimes I need a bit more elbow room. I looked at the WCL-X100 II Wide Conversion Lens, wanted it, but was reluctant to spend the $350 it costs. So I came up with another angle. I found a Canon Wide Converter WC-DC58 0.8X lens in my photo accessory drawer, and decided to try it on the X100V. I mean, why not! I already had the filter adapter for the X100V that used 49mm threads. The WC-DC58 had 58mm threads on its backside. I kept digging, found a couple step-up rings that I could cobble together, and made the connection. Peering through the electronic viewfinder, the world looked pretty good... and wider too. This had potential. I went to the menu on the Fujifilm and found the Conversion Lens option and set it to wide. This does two things. First, it correctly adjust the metadata to read at the wider focal length, and it removes the frame lines in the optical viewfinder presenting you with a more accurate view of the world. Very cool. After a bit of testing and reviewing the images at 100 percent on the laptop, I can confidently say that the lovely Canon Wide Converter works beautifully on the X100V. Sharpness was good at f/2.8 and great beyond f/5.6. Colors were deliciously Fuji, and it looks cool on the camera as well. Photos for macOS Big Sur and iPhone Essential Training This course was just released on LinkedIn Learning and lynda.com. It shows you how to leverage both the latest iPhone technology with Photos software, on both your Mac and mobile devices. He walks you through how to use the options available to you when you're recording video. Derrick also covers several advanced iPhone camera techniques, such as switching among cameras, controlling the flash, working with ProRAW, and more. Did You Know You Can Archive Your Digital Photos on Analog Film? You can read the entire article on FStoppers. Bit rot, or the slow deterioration in the performance and integrity of data stored on various forms of digital storage media, is a real concern for photographers. Over time, digital photos degrade and some even become totally defective. The best insurance against this problem may actually be analog film. Digital photography offers a lot of advantages over the analog process. Namely, it's a lot cheaper and it allows a greater degree of freedom when shooting. Images are also more easily manipulated and with greater sophistication. But digital photography also has its disadvantages, too. One big one is bit rot. I have been shooting digital for about 15 years and, already, I have degraded or defective images. Now, this is certainly by no means a huge percentage of my files but imagine if one of those images was one of my "greatest shots." In some cases, the degradation is only slight, but it is still perceptible. I have some files that are totally gone, that is they won't open at all. Bit rot is not the only thing I have struggled with in the digital realm, though. I have also just plain lost images. This has happened when I have switched recording formats, computers, etc. Some photos I only had stored in clouds and then lost when I closed accounts (Facebook, for example). The point is many digital photographs I have made in my lifetime are simply gone in one way or another, from one thing or another. Others are degraded or defective. Yet, I have every single image I have ever shot on 35mm film. My negatives have followed me halfway around the world on every move and are still as good as the day they were developed. Now, to be clear, I am not saying that negatives cannot be damaged or lost, they can. I'm simply saying, in my experience, I have all of my analog images and I do not have all of my digital ones. So it goes. Your experience may be different. Virtual Camera Club News Inner Circle Members: A big thanks to those who support our podcast and our efforts! (And welcome to our new members.) This is The Digital Story Podcast #784, March 30, 2021. Today's theme is "The Bag I Use 90 Percent of the Time (and why)" I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue The real point of this show isn't the particular bag that I use, but the features that it has and how they are useful for the modern Nimble Photographer. My hope is that this discussion will help find a compact carrying solution that you'll reach for every time you step out the door. All of this and more on today's TDS Photography Podcast. I hope you enjoy the show. Digital Photography Podcast 784 Tune-In Via Your Favorite Podcast App! Apple Podcasts -- Spotify Podcasts -- Stitcher Podbean Podcasts -- Podbay FM -- Tune In The Bag I Use 90 Percent of the Time (and why) When Lowepro released the StreamLine 150 in 2013, it was intended for lightweight vacation travel with a compact camera. Its multi-device design offered dedicated storage for a 7" tablet, smartphone, compact camera, and personal items. Even though DSLRs still roamed the earth then, there were a number of mirrorless photographers who appreciated the stylish practically of the StreamLine 150 and embraced it for their shrinking camera kits. One of things I like about it is the abundance of small lined pockets that I can use without additional protection cases. Let's take a closer look. Basic Specs and Features Measures 11"x10"x1" and weighs on 0.75 pounds. 2 padded and softly lined device front compartments protect against dust, scratches and abrasion. 2 additional front pockets for accessories. Largish main pocket. Two slim pockets for iPad mini or comparable tablet. Weather-resistant materials and design. Long shoulder strap. The reason why it's been my go-to bag is because it's slim, stylish, and doesn't look like a camera bag. Some folks might say it looks like a man-purse :-) I like the way it hugs my body when I'm biking or exploring urban environments. I can tuck it under my arm without attracting any attention. Yet, I have quick access to everything I need. Inside, I typically carry an Olympus MFT body or the Fujifilm X100V. The iPhone 12 Pro Max fits perfectly in one of the front lined pockets. An extra pair of glasses fits in the other. Lens cloths, memory cards, and other small items fit nicely in the accessory pockets. Generally, I keep my camera in the roomy main storage space. And there's still room for personal items. The bags I carry have really become smaller over the years. And as such they are easier to protect from both the elements and prying eyes. The Lowepro StreamLine 150 is hard to find these days. But I have a brand new one with its original packaging that I will raffle off to our Inner Circle Members. If you're part of our Inner Circle, or join us by April 5th, you can toss your hat in the ring to win the brand new Lowepro Streamline 150. The winner will be announced on next week's podcast. Lens Hoods: Do You Actually Need Them? You can read the entire article on F-Stoppers. I was curious to hear Marc Newton, from The School of Photography, say that you absolutely must use lens hoods. In the artistic world I don't believe there are any musts really but this video breaks down the reasons he thinks lens hoods are essential pieces of equipment. He's absolute right in some of the things he says and this is a great introduction to beginner photographers, especially, who might be wondering whether to use lens hoods or not. Funnily enough, in some of the example images he provides, I prefer those without the use of a lens hood. We already know the “what” of nonfungible tokens: They’re blockchain-backed digital media, bought and sold for a shocking amount of money while pumping an even more shocking amount of carbon into the atmosphere. What one of our listeners wants to know is the “why.” We’ll talk about it. Plus, listener questions about hot chicken, the national debt and the mess at the Suez Canal. Here’s everything we talked about on the show today: “Suez Canal blocked by traffic jam after massive container ship runs aground” from CNN “Photos and maps show how an enormous container ship got stuck in the Suez Canal, blocking one of the world’s most vital shipping routes” from Insider “Why are people spending so much money on NFTs?” from Marketplace “NFTs Are a Pyramid Scheme and People Are Already Losing Money” from FStoppers “Mounting federal debt puts the U.S. at risk of a fiscal crisis, Congressional Budget Office warns.” from The New York Times “On the bright side, 2020 was the year of Nashville hot chicken sandwiches in O.C.” from the LA Times “LA’s lost hot chicken history” from Eater

This is The Digital Story Podcast #782, March 16, 2021. Today's theme is "Do I Really Need All Those Photo Subscriptions?" I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue A reminder for my upcoming SmugMug subscription renewal arrived yesterday saying that I could lock-in the low rate of $85 if I pay for an entire year. Since the pandemic, I haven't used SmugMug once because I'm not doing client shoots. And it got me thinking about the rest of my annual charges. I think it's time to take stock of all my photo sharing subscriptions. And that's the focus of today's TDS Photography Podcast. I hope you enjoy the show. Digital Photography Podcast 782 Tune-In Via Your Favorite Podcast App! Apple Podcasts -- Spotify Podcasts -- Stitcher Podbean Podcasts -- Podbay FM -- Tune In Do I Really Need All Those Photo Subscriptions? I think part of what I had to deal with concerning this project was acknowledging that I'm not the same photographer I was at the beginning of 2020. Most of my assignments are created by me for my blog posts, LinkedIn Learning trainings, Medium articles, and workshops. I really don't need models anymore because I still can't interact with them, and I don't need sites to manage online galleries for those models and clients. Things have really changed. And the SmugMug renewal notice brought all of this home. So here's what I've been working on. The subscriptions I've decided to discontinue, I've been downloading all of my content off them in preparation to end the service. I had to start this ahead of time to allow the days required to ensure I got everything. Looking back over the last 10 years of work, I was amazed at how much content I had online. With SmugMug, for example, it was gallery after gallery that I downloaded. But I did so one at a time so I could organize the work on my backup hard drive. I just chip away at it while working on other projects. So, what did I keep, and what did I let go? Let's take a look. SmugMug - Let Go $85 a year - I really like SmugMug, and it was my go-to service for client password-protected galleries. Their organization, features list, and rendering are terrific. But I just don't do that work anymore, and it doesn't make sense to pay them $85 a year to archive that content. I've moved it all offline on to my backup hard drives. Flicker Pro - Keep $59 a year - Fortunately, SmugMug bought Flickr, so they still get some of my money. I'm keeping Flickr because it's cheaper, more versatile, and I have a deeper history of images there. Plus, we have the TDS Online Community on Flickr that I love, and draw images from for the TDS Member Photo of the Day. Flickr stays. (You might want to check out The Digital Story Public Group on Flickr where we have more than 80,000 images by TDS members. It's great!) Adobe Photography Plan (20GB) - Keep $9.99 a month - I like Lightroom and love having access to the latest Adobe photography features with this plan. I don't keep it for the storage, rather for the apps. And I appreciate them keeping the price stable over the years. Model Mayhem - Let Go $35 every 6 months - I have met many terrific people via Model Mayhem and hundreds of wonderful photographs have resulted. But again, my life is different now. I ended my subscription. Dropbox Plus 2TB - Keep $119 a year - Even though Dropbox is more than a photography plan, I use it mainly for that. And because of its versatility and popularity, it has keep its relevance even in this new chapter of my career. My online clients use it, and I need it as much as ever. iCloud 2TB - Keep $9.99 a month - If I had to keep just one cloud storage service, it would be iCloud. Since I'm in the Apple ecosystem, this services manages all the work I do on my Mac, including my photos. I wish they had a level in-between 200 GB (which isn't enough) and 2 TB (which gives me lots of head room). Regardless, it's a keeper for me. So, I've managed to trip 1/3 of my services in 2021. I'll review everything again in 2022 and go from there. Who knows what my world will be like by then? The Vanagon is Gone! I know this is a story near and dear to many hearts in our community, but I've sold the Vanagon that I used for workshops over the years, a vehicle filled with 20 years of fond memories. I've been working on it since that one miserable hot summer day a few years back when I had to have it towed from SF to Santa Rosa. I had feared that she died that day. But like a Phoenix from the ashes, she came back to full functionality. Of course, this included hours of my sweat equity combined with a few trips to Hans in Sebastopol. And on the day that I handed over the pink slip to a young German pre-med student and his girlfriend, she was running like a top. I honestly had a lump in my throat watching her drive away. Fortunately, Vanagons retain an excellent resale value on the used market, and the cash payment for my 1990 will be a sizable part of the downpayment for my new all-electric VW ID.4 5 passenger SUV. This begins a new chapter in my road trip adventures. I'll be using the ID.4 for upcoming workshops and my ongoing exploration of the world. I placed my reservation back in February, and was able to place the order just last week. So the new car is currently being built, and I should be behind the wheel by late April. I'll keep you posted! Adobe Photoshop's 'Super Resolution' Made My Jaw Hit the Floor You can read the entire article on Petapixel. Adobe just dropped its latest software updates via the Creative Cloud and among those updates is a new feature in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) called "Super Resolution." You can mark this day down as a major shift in the photo industry. I have seen a bit of reporting out there on this topic from the likes of PetaPixel and Fstoppers, but other than that the ramifications of this new feature in ACR have not been widely promoted from what I can see. The new Super Resolution feature in ACR essentially upsizes the image by a factor of four using machine learning, i.e. Artificial Intelligence (AI). What does this mean practically? Well, I immediately tested this out and was pretty shocked by the results. Though it might be hard to make out in the screenshot below, I took the surfing image shown below, which was captured a decade ago with a Nikon D700 -- a 12MP camera -- and ran the Super Resolution tool on it and the end result is a 48.2MP image that looks to be every bit as sharp (if not sharper) than the original image file. This means that I can now print that old 12MP image at significantly larger sizes than I ever could before. What this also means is that anyone with a lower resolution camera, i.e. the current crop of 24MP cameras, can now output huge image files for prints or any other usage that requires a higher resolution image file. In the three or four images I have run through this new feature in Photoshop I have found the results to be astoundingly good. The X-Tra Battery Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/x-tra/the-camera-battery-re-invented/) promises twice the battery life for your camera - but CanonRumors (http://canonrumors.com) discovered that the CEO's photo seems to be that of a stock model and the name doesn't seem connected to any real person. We dug deeper and found the true CEO, and the company's real address. Guess what? It's not a California company like they claimed. DPReview, Petapixel, F-Stoppers and Canon Rumors, among others, publicized this kickstarter project that seems to have a fake CEO. F-Stoppers and Canon Rumors did sponsored posts, while DP Review and Petapixel.com's profits were based on advertising. How could these trusted outlets publicize a scam? There's more to it than that, we found, and the real problem might have been calling it a scam without doing enough research. What can we do to prevent such problems in the future? This is The Digital Story Podcast #774, Jan. 19, 2021. Today's theme is "Why Now Is the Time for Infrared Photography." I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue After 10 months of enduring the pandemic, most of us know every square inch of our immediate environment. We've photographed the same scenes dozens of times, or have given up shooting all together. I have an amazingly effective vaccine for this creative malaise: infrared photography. And I will explain why in today's TDS podcast. I hope you enjoy the show. Digital Photography Podcast 774 Why Now Is the Time for Infrared Photography I have one of three walks that I take daily. And every time I head out the door, I have a camera with me hoping to capture something new and unique. These walks are important to me because my jobs as a photographer have all been crushed by the virus. And I haven't traveled for work since March 2020. So each day I hope to see something new to record and possibly share with others. And lately, each day I've been disappointed. One of my friends, Harold, is a big fan of infrared photography. He's shown me a lot of different things that you can do with it that go beyond what I've dabbled with over the years. So I decided to revisit what's happening now in IR. And it blew my mind! The big leap I took was getting my hands on an Olympus E-M10 Mark III that had been converted to full spectrum by Kolari Vision. This allowed me to use a variety of IR filters to create radically different looks. Now, when I take those daily walks over familiar territory, it's like I'm in a different world each day. On Monday I can shoot with the 720nm for stunning IR black and white, then on Tuesday, take the same walk with an IR Chrome filter to create a delicious world of complementary oranges and blues. Every day is a new day thanks to IR photography. You can start small to ease into IR or go big with a converted camera. Either way, you will open up a world that was literally not visible to you before. And suddenly, hometown photography is fun again. Here are 5 Fun Tips about IR photography Test an existing camera for IR sensitivity - Point a TV remote controller at your camera lens in live view. Press a button. If a dot of light is recognized on the LCD, then your camera has some IR sensitivity. Start with a Hoya R-72 Infrared Filter - I think this is the easiest way to begin with a camera that is not converted. You will have slowish shutter speeds, but I have made some wonderful pictures with this filter. Invest in a converted camera You can invest in a Kolari Vision pocket camera for as little as $249 including filters, or you can have an existing camera converted. More Options with Broader Spectrum Cameras - One of the things that got me really excited about IR the second time around was working with a full spectrum camera that gives me access to a wide variety of looks. A Hot Mirror Filter Gives Your Traditional Pictures from a Broad Spectrum Camera - If you want to use your IR camera for regular pictures as well, then get a broad spectrum conversion with a hot mirror filter to go over the lens. IR photography will give your creativity the jumpstart it needs while we navigate the ongoing pandemic in 2021. Have fun with it! The Infrared Photography Workshop If you want to learn the ins and outs of IR photography from the comfort of your home during this online event, then check out The Infrared Photography Workshop that begins in mid-March. We'll start with an orientation meeting in early February to help you get your gear in order. That will give you time to get situation and familiar with your camera. We then begin instruction in mid-March. You will learn how to: Choose best IR filter to start with. How to test your existing digital camera for infrared sensitivity. Learn about the different types of IR conversions for digital cameras. See how different IR filters produce wildly different results. Learn how to fine-tune your images with software you already own. The Death of the Entry-Level DSLR Is Upon Us: Nikon Calls Time on the D3500 and D5600 You can read the article here on Fstoppers. Last week, Nikon confirmed that its two most affordable DSLRs, the D5600 and D3500 are now "archived products." Are we witnessing the slow disappearance of the entry-level DSLR? TechRadar reached out to Nikon following reports that the two cameras have been listed as "archived." This, according to Nikon Rumors, is usually an indication that the two models are about to be discontinued if they haven't been already. "In Japan, the D5600 and D3500 are archived products," Nikon explained. "The products will continue to be sold in countries and regions other than Japan. We plan to continue selling these products for the time being. For areas other than Japan, we will consider the optimal timing for discontinuation based on the needs of the market and customers." Nikon continues to occupy a curious position in terms of its DSLR cameras, having just released new versions of the Z 6 and Z 7 mirrorless cameras but, according to rumors, intends to produce not one but potentially two new high-end DSLR cameras in the near future. One near-certainty will be the successor to the popular D850 and it remains unclear what the second might be. Read the entire blog here : https://thehighrollersclub.io/wp-admin/post.php?post=969&action=editThis video gives insight into Skip Cohen from Skip Cohen University, and his experience with photography. It begins by letting readers know a little of his background, such as how he started in the polaroid business and has seen massive growth in the photography industry. Now, the medium has changed with how images are shared and the amount consumer reach available. He follows Steve Job's philosophy that if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life. He goes on to explain that to find balance, you have to make sure your heart is in it, have a routine, and take care of yourself. In order to make your business successful, make sure you charge the right prices for your services and always try to learn new things from people who have good insight about the industry. Read the entire blog here: https://thehighrollersclub.io/blog/jessica-rae-aroha-mckaig-interview/Join us in this week's interview with Jessica Rae and Aroha McKaig for firsthand insight into how photographing boudoir is about telling a story and letting people know that they can embrace their sexuality without feeling ashamed of it. They have thorough conversations with their clients to get to know what they want out of these photos and always try to make clients feel comfortable in their studio space. They always push themselves in order to come up with new creative ideas for their shoots, and like to change studio spaces, travel, and see what other photographers in their industry are doing. Incorporating sexuality into their photographs requires them to understand what the clients limits are and make them feel comfortable in the shoot. When it comes to shooting erotica, they bring in someone who is comfortable doing it and find out what poses to shoot them in.Vulnerability is a big factor in their photography because their photos are all about storytelling. They like to talk with their clients and relate to them before taking their photos. Since many of these clients are taking these pictures in order to free themselves of a trauma or negative experience, they always try to make sure that the client comes out of the photo session feeling less damaged than they came in.You can sign up for their upcoming workshop here: https://domorephotographers.com/storefront/next-level-boudoir-workshop-sponsored.✅ Join our Free Facebook Group ✅:https://www.facebook.com/groups/boudoirhighrollersclub/
