Greetings, bonjour, what's happening?Lager Legions it's lager season…. Well, it's always Lager season over here in Lager HQ. I don't actually drink that much these days but it's a frame of mind more than anything, letting your hair down, getting things off your chest, that's what I'm talking about! And speaking of seasons, it's all got a bit autumnal out there; I'm enjoying it! Been mainly at home this week, it's been great, my wife is away for work, I miss her, but it's just me and the doggies. Done a fair bit of looking out the window, this week watching the rain drops and listening to the magic; one of my favourite things to do. Large up James Harris, who writes Stiff Upper Quip on Substack, he wrote this nice little piece this week about enjoying the rainLarge up those of you that caught the first episode of Young Unprofessional last week. Despite the character being old, this series is all quite new at the moment, and I'm slowly finding my feet with it. These are all draft pieces, I'm writing it as I go along. I'm just playing the with character, and the form and seeing it where it goes. Much like I did with the Satellite Stories. If I can get to six, I'll see where I'm at with it all. There's a few stories  that I wrote a few years back, from when Reece was in New Town. I'll probably put a few of those up at some point, lots of them include many of the characters in mentioned in these London pieces. So this time next week, I'll be getting ready for my gig at Poetry & Poppadums up in Wood Green, London. I'm on the bill with comedy and poetry heavyweight Simon Munnery, Carine Harb and all hosted and curated by the legend that is Paul Lyalls. It's always a fun gig. Good food, booze, tunes and well run. Also on the Thursday before that, I'm also at the launch event for the inaugural Maidstone Literature festival, at the museum there. Maidstone is where I live these days, and I rarely to get to do anything in the town related to what I do so I'm very excited at the prospect of walking to the gig, from my house. I don't know what the crack with tickets is, there's gonna be council people, the mayor but they have a website and are on Instagram so have a bucthers. They got loads of events happening around the town.In light of upcoming gigs, I'm gonna do a Not Quite Live episode, where I basically just press record and run through a set of poems and sometimes music, then upload them, it'll probably be just poems; I need to get a bit more practise in for the music before I start doing that again, it's been a while.Being that I've been at home a bit more, I've spruced up my website a bit; have a butchers at www.paulcree.co.uk and I've try to organise the Substack a bit as well, so you can see all the Satellite Stories in one place, for instance. You can find my music on Spotify, Apple, Bandcamp and all of them; few videos on You Tube too.If you like what I'm doing, hit subscribe on whatever platform you're following on, it all helps, but I guess you already know that, you must hear it from people like me, all the timeLarge up for listening, thoughKeep it lager than lifeEnjoy the story, it's called The Urban Explorer But In Sick trainersPeas and tatersPaulLINKSJames Harris (Stiff Upper Quip – Notes On Pluviophilia)Poetry & Poppadums @ Karamel, Wood Green https://www.musicglue.com/karamel/events/2023-09-29-poetry-and-poppadums-with-simon-munnery-karamelMaidstone Literature Festivalhttps://www.maidstonelitfest.org/Not Quite Live Editionhttps://cree.substack.com/p/not-quite-live-edition-2#detailsMy Websitewww.paulcree.co.ukBuy my books: The Suburban and The Hip Hop Theatre Anthologyhttps://paulcree.co.uk/shopStream my EP: Toast in the Machinehttps://paulcree.hearnow.com/ This is a public episode. Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan

Like his main man Bob Dylan, comedian Simon Munnery knows a few things about heckles: aside from being arrested in Edinburgh for heckling Arthur Smith, he met his future wife when she heckled him in Australia. When not on the road, Simon joins his local Morris Men in Bedfordshire pubs, serenading fellow drinkers with his version of Blind Willie McTell. But he no longer owns any Dylan albums (“I've given them all away. I went through a period of being quite evangelist”). Munnery cracks us up with his drunken plot to meet Madonna at a record launch, enlightens us with his passionate appreciation of The Velvet Underground's Beginning To See The Light, cracks us up again with his theory about Kate Bush swapping places with God and mystifies us as to why he played Kind of Blue on a loop for six months. There's lots about Bob Dylan, too.Simon Munnery is “one of the most original and talented comics in the country” (The Observer). After Cambridge University in the mid-eighties, he worked with Steve Coogan, Patrick Marber, Richard Herring and Stewart Lee on an Edinburgh Fringe piece called The Dum Show. In the nineties, he performed sell-out solo shows at London theatres and international festivals, featuring characters including Alan Parker: Urban Warrior, The League Against Tedium and Buckethead. Simon starred in ITV's flagship stand-up show Saturday Live, won a Sony Gold Radio Award for his BBC Radio 1 series Alan Parker's 29 Minutes of Truth and was nominated for a British Comedy Award for his BBC2 show London Shouting. His TV series Attention Scum was directed by Stewart Lee. Simon appeared as Alan Parker on a music track by The Orb called Grey Clouds. He is currently touring Simon Munnery: Trials And Tribulations.WebsiteTwitterTrailerEpisode playlist on SpotifyListeners: please subscribe and/or leave a review and a rating.Twitter @isitrollingpodRecorded 10th January 2023 Hosted on Acast. Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan

Comedian and columnist Stewart Lee remains “grateful to the people who brainwashed me into listening to Bob Dylan during a period of emotional and physical weakness.” He remembers seeing Dylan live at Hyde Park with his kids (“one of the greatest nights of my life”) as well as the time he alienated the audience at a Teenage Cancer Trust Benefit. “It was a good gig. 'Cause it was true. Self-sabotage keeps you alive. Chaos and confusion create a bubble that protects you.” Stew namechecks Dylan, Mark E. Smith, Jerry Sadowitz, William Blake, Roky Erickson and Mozart as fellow artists who “develop a split personality that says: what if I make him do this?” Warning: listeners should keep in mind that Mr Lee is “a cultural bully from the Oxbridge Mafia who wants to appear morally superior but couldn't cut the mustard on a panel game.” (Lee Mack)This is a review (Dominic Maxwell, The Times) of Stewart's current show, Basic Lee: "If someone says they're going back to basics, can they be trusted? When Stewart Lee tells you he is going back to basics you sniff only fresh mischief in his chortlingly bold smush of sarcasm, satire, self-commentary and alternately lugubrious and exultant flights of fancy. It is hard, Lee tells us, to try to be funny in these days of frenetic social and political change. So he bookends this new show, which he wants to stay relevant until its tour ends in 2024, with a reworking of a routine he first performed at the start of his career in 1989. Self-plagiarism? Actually, Lee could profitably spend the rest of his career rejigging old routines, much as Miles Davis was able to find endless new takes on Stella by Starlight. At his best, as he delivers a comedy show that is a kind of lecture about comedy shows, he cheeks the crowd so surely that the effect is insulting yet intimate. Basic Lee is one of his more pretzel-shaped evenings. If its inner logic isn't always easy to grasp, who cares when something is rendered with this much wit and verve? What's it all about? It's all about two hours long, it's all very clever, but, basically, Basic Lee is very funny.""What would it be like if Bob Dylan from the 60's took a look a stand-up comedy today?"The Dream Syndicate's cover of Blind Willie McTell (1988)Steve Wynn, Murder Most Foul (2020)WebsiteTwitterTrailerEpisode playlist on AppleEpisode playlist on SpotifyListeners: please subscribe and/or leave a review and a rating.Twitter @isitrollingpodRecorded 16th November 2022This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts

Richard quizzes his audience to find how little they have done with their lives, before introducing the comedian's comedian and avant garde comedy genius, Simon Munnery. In a frank interview Simon reveal the unwritten truth of Steve Coogan's 1992 Edinburgh Fringe hospital visit, how Mark Lamarr did the bravest thing ever witnessed on stage, how Simon met his wife as a voice in the darkness during a gig that was spiralling out of control, setting up a restaurant that doesn't serve food, and what it was like to play Malcolm Hardee's legendary Tunnel Club. There's a bit where he looks like he might try to punch Richard to the floor, but instead they settle the battle of the aged Alpha males in the most manly way possible. Simon Munnery has been in this business that we call show for thirty years, which I guess is how long it takes to come up with his latest jape "And Nothing But", which as you will have figured out by now, is his current show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. In this chat, we talk reviews, the Can Can, building ridiculous props, and a little bit of theatre trivia from Adam Hills.

Gary fiercely defends the value of hard work over talent, and also finds time to cry hacky, spunky tears... 2012 #5: Burns Baby Burns - Simon Munnery and Mary Bourke. After three days in a row of different audio failures one begins to suspect that the podcast is cursed. Today the desk finally recorded the show without a hitch, but that's not much use when the main guest hasn't shown up. ITV2's Brendon Burns was nowhere to be seen and couldn't be contacted and so the call went out for a replacement comic who didn't arrive until ten minutes into the show. Luckily for us all we had true comedy legend and Great British eccentric Simon Munnery as a super-sub to tell us all about his dining experience with no food, Cluub Z and the time he had a quarter of a million pounds to spend on hats. Margaret is back in the audience trawling for young men before returning to Durham and we get to find out which Dr Who monster she'd most like to have sex with. Richard lets us know why he loves Barry Cryer more than his own dad and explains his arch rivalry with the penguin and is no way treading water until a guest arrives. Mary Bourke has bothered to turn up and impresses with her stand-up. Burns later revealed he was asleep and will now be a guest on 14th instead- why do I have a feeling this might become like the boy who cried wolf?

It's amazing stuff. And if that wasn't enough Matt Green is on hand for five minutes of stand-up and one lucky sinister fella is going to win a 25 Euro voucher to buy left-handed items at On The Other Hand - www.ontheotherhand.ie - if you come tomorrow you could win another one!

Richard wonders if he is in the middle of a 3 and a half week long piece of theatre rather than a podcast, but presses on, cos though he feels as if he's in a play, he is anyway. He's trying out for Michael McIntyre's Roadshow with his opening monologue but keeps forgetting not to swear. His guest is the Canadian comedy genius Glenn Wool who has some excellent advice on how to deal with the English rioters, and also weirdly enough has independently come up with two routines that Rich has also been considering - great minds think alike - and so do rubbish ones. The boys share their stories of unusual biopsies and ghosts and love and life on the road. With 5 minutes of stand-up from the brilliant Simon Munnery, because he lives across the road and Rich had neglected to book anyone. Whoever wrote today's script for the play was on blistering form. Hope you enjoy it!
