Emotional Intelligence and Trauma | A Real Life Client Story Part 3/3 on Emotional Intelligence The WISDOM podcast  Season 3 Episode 24 Warning: Sensitive Content ~ Your past trauma does not define you. ~   Here in Part Three of this series, we discuss how trauma impacts emotional reactivity – namely, situations where you are triggered based on a previous trauma - thereby causing the same or a similar heightened emotional reaction.   How well you react in a present moment situation that is triggered by a past trauma is reflected in your level of emotional intelligence.   Since trauma can alter brain functioning and therefore our ability to regulate emotions, we dive into how the brain is impacted by trauma and the importance of neuroplasticity - making it possible to re-wire our brain, to learn healthy coping responses and to change your fear reaction in perceived and real situations of stress.   Thank you so much for joining me in this 3-part series on emotional intelligence. Please share out each of these episodes with a loved one who could be helped by building greater emotional intelligence.   Each Tuesday at 8pm EST, I take you on a journey - inside - what happens in a session of Life Coaching and Therapy in the 'ask dorothy' series as we answer the questions that honour your path and your life.     If you would like my help to build your Emotional Intelligence as one part of your plan to overcome the reactions of a traumatic experience, please reach out to me.  namaste!

We had the pleasure of interviewing Kabir Sehgal over Zoom video!Multi-GRAMMY Award (6x) and Latin GRAMMY Award-winning (5x) producer/artist Kabir Sehgal collaborates with leading BIPOC and women artists on his latest EP, Threshold, set for release on Tiger Turn (eOne) on Friday, August 27, 2021. An Indian American producer with more than 70 album credits to his name, Kabir Sehgal releases four singles leading up to Threshold with each showcasing the complexities of finding love and discovering one's individual identity. Threshold features pop sensation Sonna Rele (vocalist on "Strong" in Disney's motion picture, Cinderella) on the first single, "Somewhere Between 5th and Madison" (Release Date: May 14, 2021). Alyssa Raghu -- a Top 8 contestant on ABC's American Idol (2018, 2019) and who Katy Perrytouted about, "She's got that sauce!" -- teams up with U.S. immigrant and DACA recipient Caliph on "Wasted Pages" (Release Date: June 4, 2021). Sehgal remixes Emilio Solla's "Llegara, Llegara, Llegara" from the Latin GRAMMY-winning album Puertos ("Best Latin Jazz Album," 2020) with special guest vocalists Manu Manzo and Danay Suarez (Release Date: July 9, 2021). Threshold closes with a Pop/EDM track "What's Your Name?" highlighting GRAMMY Award-nominated singer Thana Alexa (Release Date: August 27, 2021). As one of today's leading producers, Sehgal's award-winning recording catalog reflects a career spotlighting political and social issues voiced through the mediums of big band jazz and working with soul/R&B stars such as Jon Batiste (featured on Sehgal's 2020 production, Swing States: Harmony in the Battleground). He has also made four albums as an artist with meditation pioneer Deepak Chopra, including Spiritual Warrior. Threshold takes Sehgal into the pop music realm with the same premise as his latest recordings: to project personal stories that must be heard by the masses. Sehgal is renowned for traveling to the U.S.-Mexico border with Arturo O'Farrill to film the feature documentary and 2-CD recording, Fandango at the Wall (HBO). His production American Dreamers with the John Daversa Big Band and DACA artists won three GRAMMY's (the 2nd most at the 61st GRAMMY's). Sehgal also produced Presidential Suite: Eight Variations on Freedom by Ted Nash along with members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Threshold marks Sehgal's foray into Pop/EDM production featuring brilliant BIPOC vocalists each offering divergent perspectives on love's many languages. London-born Sonna Rele sings of a magical kiss and sleepless nights in the Big Apple on "Somewhere Between 5th and Madison." Emotive vocals meet multi-synth arrangements for a DJ-ready track for NYC's bars and clubs. Rele got signed by Ne-Yo to his Motown Records and has worked with John Legend, Maxi Priest, Wyclef Jean, and Michael Franti. Rele brings her A-game to "Somewhere Between 5th and Madison," a song by acclaimed songwriter Greer Baxter that is about the highs and lows of love in Manhattan. Baxter wrote the first, second, and fourth songs of the EP, and co-wrote the third one, and she's known for her "Line in the Sand" which Mandy Gonzalez of Hamilton performed on the album, Fandango at the Wall. While in the studio producing Threshold, Sehgal has presented more than 100 concerts in 77 days with his nightly "Quarantine Series" that's garnered more than 4 million views on Facebook. We want to hear from you! Have you ever played Two Truths and a Lie? If you haven't, the rules are pretty simple: you state 3 facts about yourself and 1 has to be a lie while the other 2 facts must be true. Then, people have to try and figure out which fact is the lie. It's a common ice breaker game people play during employee retreats, summer camp, and the occasional birthday party. The things people choose to lie about are also fairly common: the existence of pets, how many siblings you have, a weird allergy, or whether or not you traveled to this cool place where a crazy thing happened to you (hint: that's usually not the lie). But what probably isn't so common is using your identity as part of the game. “I don't speak Chinese” when people assume you do or “my parents are white” when people assume they're not. Alia, one of the guests on today's show, is one such people. On this episode, I chat with Alia and her co-host Aimee from the Somewhere Between podcast where they too, talk with others about the concept of identity, and how our experiences as adoptees create ripple effects we feel our whole lives. Ale Cohen and Mark "Frosty" McNeill share their journey through “experimenting with sound” and community in building the Internet radio collective DUBLAB over the past two decades. They share what inspired and drove them to build this institution and how it has shifted gears in our listen-from-home global era.   Dublab is not your average radio station. Mark calls it “experimentation with sound” that was formed as a reaction to the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which forced the closure of low-power stations. We talked about online radio as a “misuse of technology” -- as a “hack” and a mutant use of tech. Initially, dublab acted as “an excuse to gather the creative community of Los Angeles.” They share stories of how contemporary much often started out of the studio and how dublab became a testing ground for new sound and to honor the music that went before. Guests: Mark “Frosty” McNeill, Founder, and Alejandro Cohen, Director, dublab Alejandro Cohen is a musician and composer from Los Angeles, and the Director of non-profit radio station DUBLAB. Over the last two decades, Cohen has released music under numerous projects and groups including Languis and Pharaohs. He has composed music for TV shows, documentaries, and educational materials, and recorded more than two hundred solo artists and bands as a sound engineer and consultant forhttp://dublab.com/ ( dublab.com), KPFK 90.7 FM, Sony/Columbia, and the Society for the Activation of Social Space Through Art and Sound (SASSAS). As Executive Director of the Internet radio station and creative collective DUBLAB, Cohen curates the station's programming and podcast offerings, fundraises for the organization, and curates the annual ambient music event Tonalism. Mark “Frosty” McNeill is a DJ, radio producer, sonic curator, filmmaker, and creative community builder based in Los Angeles. He was the founder of http://dublab.com/ (dublab.com), a pioneering web radio station that has been exploring wide-spectrum music since 1999. McNeill hosts https://www.dublab.com/shows/celsius-drop/ (Celsius Drop), a weekly dublab radio show and has produced long-running programs for Red Bull Radio, Marfa Public Radio, and KPFK 90.7fm. McNeill co-curated/produced the https://lightintheattic.net/releases/4714-pacific-breeze-japanese-city-pop-aor-boogie-1976-1986 (Pacific Breeze) compilations of Japanese City Pop music for Light in the Attic Records as well as Somewhere Between, a forthcoming album focused on the more experimental side of Japanese pop. His output on a multitude of international media platforms has focused on sharing transcendent sonic experiences. Happy 2019! Just a little late. But trust me, this one was worth the wait. Seeing as this is number 101 it seemed only appropriate to take it back to where it all began, (and has continued to hit over and over again) drum and bass. Got a full mix on deck for you today. Apologies for the sound gremlins this week folks. No apologies from ABC however for Somewhere Between, a murder-thriller cross between Groundhog Day and a hernia. Having blown their budget on Game of Thrones, HBO hits the low rent district in Room 104, an anthology of shorts set in a motel room. Michael Keaton tells us the sometimes brutal history of the Big Mac in The Founder.

After a whirlwind week, Kate is back from San Diego Comic-Con International, with only the mildest of sunburns (a dramatic improvement over last year). Noel and Kate kick off the podcast this week with a quick discussion of the Jeremy Jordan/Supergirl and SuperCorp dustup from ComicCon, then head into our week in TV. First up are the comedies, including the returns of Insecure and People of Earth, along with entertaining episodes of I’m Sorry and Younger. Then it’s over to the drama and genre offerings, including the premieres of Midnight, Texas and Somewhere Between, an intense Adventure Time, a mixed Wynonna Earp, and much more (including a potentially controversial take from Kate on The Bold Type’s newest romance). Then to finish out the podcast, as well as our coverage of SDCC 2017, friend of the show Maggie Kulzick returns to share the high- and low-lights of this year’s Con, from panels and cosplay to signings and food. Jonas Yip is a photographer and musician in the Los Angeles area, not to mention a friend of mine. I first met Jonas several years ago at the first Medium Festival of Photography, where we immediately hit it off. As he puts it in his bio, Jonas is "more interested in capturing feeling than in capturing detail," something that I've always found to be true about his work. For today's show we talked about several of his bodies of work, including his "Somewhere Between" series and his "Paris: Dialogue" series. For the second segment, we talked about the idea of the Internet as an archive, and what that might mean for our culture as we move into the future. (Conversation recorded March 22, 2017.)
