In this Father's Day episode, Dr. Bud Marr hosts solo while co-host Bo Bonner travels through Europe, welcoming back an Uncommon Good "all-star": Joe Stopulos, host of the Man Up show on Iowa Catholic Radio. Both shows launched in 2016, and this episode marks an Iowa Catholic Radio mashup centered on one question — what does it mean to live a life well lived in light of eternity? The conversation grows out of Joe's recent loss of his father, who died after a fourteen-week battle with aggressive cancer. Joe shares the beauty found within that suffering: a death surrounded by family, the reception of communion and the sacrament of anointing, and a final afternoon of praying the Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at his father's bedside. The discussion turns to the Church's teaching that we should never hasten death, and how that teaching preserved precious conversations, graces, and "teachable moments" that would otherwise have been lost. Highlights and themes include: The witness of service over selfishness — drawing on Joe's father, bookstore owner Lois Brookhart, Father Aquinas, and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati as everyday and saintly models Bishop Robert Barron's challenge that "your life is not about you" Memento mori and Ben Sasse's reflections on facing mortality Living the joy of the gospel without needing to be a scholar or apologist — the "little way" of St. Thérèse and the humble witness of Blessed Solanus Casey and St. John Henry Newman Balancing vocation, career, and intentional time with children Health span and stewardship of the body — referencing Peter Attia's Outlive — as a way to keep serving others well into old age Tim Carney's Family Unfriendly and resisting the "Instagram" sheen of family life The Uncommon Good is a production of Iowa Catholic Radio, exploring Catholic social teaching for everyday life. A new study suggests the drop in fertility rates in the U.S. is in part related to the rise of smartphone culture. Catholic social scientists are among those who believe it is not a coincidence that smartphones became widespread in 2007, just before the fertility rate plunged. Catholic author Tim Carney and University of Virginia professor Brad Wilcox examine the study's accuracy and the ways Pope Leo XIV and Catholic schools can help reverse the trend. Plus a closer look at the miracle “baby born twice” to Catholic parents in Florida; Oregon holds its annual rally for the unborn, which dates from before Roe v Wade; and a one-time champion pentathlete in Italy dives deeper into his faith, and being an advocate for the disabled, following a near-fatal accident.

Send us Fan MailAs you know, the American Heroes Run honors among others our courageous first responders, so when the opportunity came up to chat with Tim Carney, a professional firefighter for 33 years, I jumped at it. Tim learned early on during one of his rescues how much fitness comes into play. From this, he earned his personal training certification. But he was surprised how much resistance he got from department heads after he developed a program to improve wellness for those he worked with. This evolved into him creating PrimeFITTlife, which is aimed to help people of all ages and all walks achieve what he calls a better “health-style.” Tim has learned a lot about how fitness contributes to overall health, and most of all about the different ways people are motivated to act. He points out that people are typically either “doers,” “whyers,” or “howers,” and what types of exercise are likely to inspire each group. He has distilled his down-to-earth approach into in-person and online training, and e-books. We talk also about barriers that some people erect to adopting a better health-style, and about simple steps one can take to overcome these, whether it's meal planning or simply walking – and that there are different types of walking for fitness, too.  It's also great that Tim brings his classroom training into community centers near where he lives in northeast Ohio to facilitate more of that healthstyle training to a wider audience. Tim shares a lot of fantastic, simple steps one can take to make incremental progress in your overall health that can benefit all of us, including what he calls “minding your P's and 2's.” Be sure to reach out to Tim at timothyjcarney.com for his free e-book or if you'd like to chat with him about improving your own healthstyle.Tim Carneytimothyjcarney.comInstagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn @primeFITTlifeBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @we_are_superman_podcastYouTube We Are Superman PodcastSubscribe to the We Are Superman Newsletter!https://mailchi.mp/dab62cfc01f8/newsletter-signupSubscribe to our Substack for my archive of articles of coaching tips developed from my more than three decades of experience, wild and funny stories from my long coaching career, the wit and wisdom of David, and highlights of some of the best WASP episodes from the past that I feel are worthwhile giving another listen.Search either We Are Superman Podcast or @billstahl8Register for the American Heroes Run: https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=133138Ride to End ALZ Coloradowww.alz.org/rideco

Is our culture working against your marriage and family? Tim Carney, author of Family Unfriendly, joins the podcast to unpack why birth and marriage rates are falling — and what families can do to push back. From the "travel team trap" to helicopter parenting to radical individualism, this conversation is honest, practical, and deeply encouraging for couples who want to build a family that is countercultural and God-honoring.DISCUSSION QUESTIONS1- Are there any activities or commitments in our family schedule that are pulling us apart more than they're bringing us together? What would it look like to simplify?2- Tim says we communicate what we value by how we spend our time. What does our current schedule communicate to our kids — and to each other?3- How intentional are we about cultivating a community around our family? Are we taking more than we're giving in our church or neighborhood?4- In what ways have we bought into a hyper-individualistic mindset — even subtly — in how we approach our marriage or parenting?5- What is one small, countercultural step we could take this month to make our family more connected — to each other, to our church, or to our neighbors?6- If you have or plan to have kids: how are we thinking about unstructured play and sibling relationships as building blocks for who our children become?RESOURCESFamily Unfriendly by Tim CarneyAway Game by Brian Smith and Ed UszynskiYouth Sports MTR Episode

They dig into the practical solutions that would approach care in a more humane way, both on a policy level and a community level. Watch the video recording of this talk on YouTube! “Caregiving is a hot topic. It's on the campaign trail right now. It's in the headlines, but there's such depth to what we need around caregiving.” -Liz [07:44] “I believe that care consists of various peoples–aunties, uncles, teachers, coaches–that contribute to the being of one person. And I believe that it's mutually beneficial. I think members of their culture have someone to contribute to their being. None of us arrive to this place of love and care by ourselves. It takes a village.” -Charles [13:35] “Caring for others is self care. It is challenging and stressful and hard, but that doesn't mean that it's not nourishing us in other ways.” -Elissa [21:20] “If we want to support stay-at-home parents, if we want to empower choices by parents to care for their children in the ways that they think best and align with their values, one of the most important things we can do is address the cost of housing.” -Joe [45:32] “It's really tough to fix this because what we have on one hand is parents who can't afford safe, clean, reliable childcare, and the biggest input into that is the wages.” -Tim [52:15] TIMESTAMPS [00:00] Intro [04:04] About the panelists [07:36] The deeper meaning of caregiving [14:10] America's concept of care [21:29] Economic and cultural pressures [25:43] The role of women [32:05] Learning from other countries and cultures [41:25] A more human approach to care [51:12] Questions from the audience [1:08:39] Outro REFERENCES For the Good of the Public Summit Liz Tenety, co-founder of Motherly and Founding Women Elissa Strauss “When You Care: The Unexpected Magic of Caring for Others” by Elissa Strauss Joe Waters, CEO and co-founder of Capita Tim Carney, journalist at the Washington Examiner and senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute Dr. Charles Daniels, founder and CEO of Fathers' Uplift “Family Unfriendly: How Our Culture Made Raising Kids Much Harder Than It Needs to Be” by Timothy P. In this episode, we interview Tim Carney, a father, husband, and political reporter.Summary:In this episode, we sit down with Tim Carney, a political reporter, think tank fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, and author based in Washington, D.C. Tim, a Catholic father of six, shares his unique perspective on raising a family in the nation's capital, challenging the stereotype of D.C. as a "moral wasteland." He discusses his latest book, Family Unfriendly: How Our Culture Made Raising Kids Much Harder Than It Needs to Be, and dives into topics like the declining U.S. birth rate, the importance of culture in politics, and practical ways to support families—from walkable neighborhoods to tax policies. Tim also reflects on the role of fatherhood, the need for cultural shifts, and why he believes having more kids (four or more!) can actually make life easier.Key Topics:Life in D.C.: Tim debunks myths about Washington, D.C., highlighting its strong Catholic community, great schools, and notable figures like Justice Clarence Thomas attending Mass.Writing & Work: As a political commentator, Tim has authored books on lobbying and corporate welfare, but his recent focus is on family and community—arguing that babies and strong families are vital to society.Culture Matters: At AEI, Tim works in the new Social, Cultural, and Constitutional Studies department, emphasizing how marriage, kids, and human values shape politics and the economy—despite resistance from D.C.'s policy-focused elite.Low Birth Rates: Tim addresses America's falling fertility rate (1.62 babies per woman) and the growing political awareness of this issue, citing figures like JD Vance pushing for a pro-family agenda.Policy Ideas: From local walkability for kids to federal child tax credits, Tim explores how government can support families without overreach, drawing examples from Hungary and France.Fatherhood: He advocates for culturally elevating fatherhood as distinct from motherhood, encouraging dads to prioritize family over work and set an example in their communities.Favorite Article: Tim shares the success of his Washington Post piece, “The Ideal Number of Children in a Family: Four at a Minimum,” which sparked debate and highlighted the benefits of larger families.Quotable Moments:“Babies are a good thing. Life is good.”“If you want fecundity in the sheets, you need walkability in the streets.”“Childhood anxiety is mostly about kids growing up without unsupervised play. Parental stress is this false belief that you control them.”Where to Find Tim:Book: Family Unfriendly – Available on Amazon or your local bookstore (if you convince them to stock it!).X: @TPCarneyClosing Thoughts:Tim's blend of humor, policy insight, and pro-family passion makes this a must-listen for anyone interested in culture, parenting, or the future of American society.

This Flashback Friday is from episode 449, published last 8 December 2014. Jason Hartman brings in a real estate focus to the introduction of today's Creating Wealth Show by explaining exactly how you can work out your rent-to-value ratio. As this is one of the most important figures a real estate investor need to keep in mind, there's no excuse for deceiving yourself. Later, he invites Tim Carney, author of The Big Rip-Off and Obamanomics and writer for the Washington Examiner to come on the show and give his thoughts about the huge and potentially irreversible impact that big business and big Government are having on America. They also discuss topics such as human rights to information and what you say when Goldman Sachs offers you a position. Key Takeaways 03.27 In some markets, you can't control the rent-to-value ratio, but you really want to aim for 1% per month or above. 11:01 Seemingly, the bigger you get, the more you can get away with. 14.44 Tim Carney provides some examples where regulation seems to have an alternate outcome to what was hoped. 18.38 A look at the options of how we can possibly dislodge the power of big business and government.  19.45 Politics and the economy are starting to work together because fewer people are now gaining from a specific policy. 22:16 Government agencies don't even have to worry about subtlety; if they want you they'll do what they can to get you. 24:00 Why is it that they can spy on us and we get no information about Government actions, even when they affect us? 25.41 Big business benefits from and lobbies for big Government to the detriment of the consumer, the competitor and the tax payer.  28:10 Technology could be our undoing or it could be our liberation. We'll have to wait and see. 30.28 To read Tim's articles, head to  www.WashingtonExaminer.com and his Fellowship is with the American Enterprise Institute: www.AEI.org    Mentioned in this episode The Big Rip-Off by Tim Carney Obamanomics by Tim Carney www.AEI.org www.WashingtonExaminer.com   Follow Jason on TWITTER, INSTAGRAM & LINKEDIN Twitter.com/JasonHartmanROI Instagram.com/jasonhartman1/ Linkedin.com/in/jasonhartmaninvestor/ Call our Investment Counselors at: 1-800-HARTMAN (US) or visit: https://www.jasonhartman.com/ Free Class:  Easily get up to $250,000 in funding for real estate, business or anything else: http://JasonHartman.com/Fund CYA Protect Your Assets, Save Taxes & Estate Planning: http://JasonHartman.com/Protect Get wholesale real estate deals for investment or build a great business – Free Course: https://www.jasonhartman.com/deals Special Offer from Ron LeGrand: https://JasonHartman.com/Ron Free Mini-Book on Pandemic Investing: https://www.PandemicInvesting.com

How could America shift so babies were more welcomed, less dreaded?Tim Carney, author of the new book “Family Unfriendly: How Our Culture Made Raising Kids Much Harder Than It Needs to Be,” has a few ideas. He'd like to see corporations offer parents their child's birthday off every year. He wants parents to not work so hard at parenting—and to never, ever, sign up their kids for a travel sports team. He'd like to see local governments prioritize sidewalks and denser housing, which would make neighborhoods safer for kids. But he also wants us to think about why we have a falling birth rate—and what it says about us. After World War II, America had a baby boom, while Germany experienced a baby bust. Now, we're struggling with our own baby bust, even as we are hammered by relentless discussions of America's failures, the threat of climate change, and more. “The spirit of the age now is what I call civilizational sadness,” says Carney. “And the sadness is a belief that we're just not good or that humans were a mistake.”Enjoy the show!
