In today’s episode on Gateways to Awakening, I speak with my friend Jon Amiel, a distinguished director, writer, and producer with a remarkable career in theatre, film, and television. After spending a decade rising from fringe theatre to the Royal Shakespeare Company, Jon transitioned to television, where he made significant strides at the BBC, culminating with the award-winning "Silent Twins" and the multi-award-winning "Singing Detective." Jon's success continued in the film industry over the next 15 years, directing major feature films such as "Sommersby" with Jodie Foster and Richard Gere, "Copycat" with Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter, "Entrapment" with Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones, "The Man Who Knew Too Little" with Bill Murray, "The Core" with Aaron Eckhart and Hilary Swank, and "Creation" with Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly. Jon's attraction to various genres is driven by his curiosity and desire to explore different facets of storytelling, approaching each genre with unique techniques and perspectives. As a mentor, Jon frequently advises aspiring directors and writers to focus on authenticity in storytelling and to develop a strong personal voice. We talk about the following and so much more: ✅ What he spends most of his time thinking about and why ✅ What, in his opinion, makes a good story and why? ✅ What inspired his journey into the world of film - an in particular directing? ✅ As a mentor and advisor to many film directors and writers, what advice does he find himself giving most frequently ✅ What draws him to a particular project, and how does he approach each genre differently ✅ What the creative process was like bringing such a gripping story like Copycat to life If you’d like to join the waitlist for my next coaching program, sign up @ www.InnerKnowingSchool.com Please tag us and tell us what you loved! Steve interviews screenwriter Nicholas Meyer all about his original screenplay for the Richard Gere/Jodie Foster post-Civil War drama Sommersby (1993)
No saben qué esperar.
For the second month of 1993, we snuck in yet another hidden gem:Jack Sommersby (Richard Gere) appears back home at his farm after presumably dying a prisoner of the North in the American Civil War. What he doesn't expect is that his beloved wife Laurel (Jodie Foster) has moved on. Can he prove his worth to his hometown that left him behind? Can he prove that he even is who he says he is? This is….Sommersby!
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Nicholas Meyer, Multi-Award Winning Author, Screenwriter And Director About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Nicholas Meyer, is a multi-award winning author, screenwriter and director, whose remarkable body of work over the past five decades includes some of the most popular and beloved books and movies of our time. His other Sherlock Holmes novels include “The West End Horror”, “The Canary Trainer”, “The Adventure of the Peculiar Protocols”, and “The Return of the Pharoah”. But he's perhaps best known for his connection to the Star Trek movie franchise. He co-wrote the screenplay and directed “Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan”. In 1983 he directed the highly acclaimed TV movie “The Day After”, starring Jason Robards, JoBeth Williams and Steve Guttenberg, which dealt with the effects of a devastating nuclear holocaust, and was nominated for 12 Emmy awards – winning two - and remains the single most-watched TV movie ever made, with a viewership of 100 million people in one night. His screenplays include “Sommersby”, “The Informant”, “Elegy”, and the brilliant 2-part miniseries, “Houdini” starring Adrien Brody, which is based on a fascinating book by our guest's father, entitled, “Houdini: A Mind in Chains: A Psychoanalytic Portrait”. Our guest is also the co-creator of the Netflix series “Medici”. If that weren't enough, he also contributed to the screenplays of 2 other classic movies, “Fatal Attraction” and “Prince of Egypt”. Jennifer Sommersby started writing rom-coms (romantic comedies) under the pseudonym of Eliza Gordon as she was in the waiting game of edits/revisions/publication for a young adult novel. She has penned 8 books under that name, the latest a three-part series - Planet Lara. Welcome to Planet Lara is an enviromance - environmental romance - with excellent characters (I hated Lara for most of the book) and incidents that keep you turning pages. In this episode, we talk about Jennifer's author journey, writing unlikeable characters and writing under a pseudonym. Check out all the quirk that is Eliza Gordon. Read about Sleight and Scheme (the Undoing, in Canada) on this website. Learn more about your host, Dana Goldstein. Support the podcast on Patreon.

This week we discuss the post-Civil War era drama "Sommersby" starring Richard Gere, Jodie Foster, and Bill Pullman. We're joined by our first ever guest, Elise's BFF Chelsea! The three of us try to make sense of the movie's complicated plot, talk about where exactly on her body Jodie Foster's character may have hidden her grandmother's brooch, gripe about the film's terrible ending, and Elise somberly reflects on the reputation she has created for herself by doing this podcast.

It’s time for some failed harlequin romance Oscar buzz and that means we are talking 1993′s Sommersby. A post-Civil War era love story of overtaken identity and languorous beard shaving, the presence of a post-Silence of the Lambs Jodie Foster had us thinking this weepy could be Oscar-bound. But as the dueling elements of Richard … Continue reading "018 – Sommersby"

If you missed this week's BEHIND THE LENS live, you definitely want to take a listen now to two very special guests, SCOTT HECKER and THEO TAPLITZ! As if each isn't accomplished and interesting enough in their own right, when these two start talking sound design together, it is a true meeting of the minds and the generation gap disappears. While many of you may not recognize the name, SCOTT HECKER, you know his work well. An Academy Award, BAFTA and Emmy nominee, as a Supervising Sound Editor and Sound Designer with Formosa Group, Scott is one of the "sound guys" playing in the sonic sandbox creating an unforgettable auditory experience for moviegoers in films ranging from "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice", "Mad Max: Fury Road", "300" and "Man of Steel" to his earlier pre-Formosa work in films like "Sommersby", "King Ralph" and even working as a foley editor on "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back." You'll be as amazed as I as Scott regales some fun anecdotes about his work in the field these past few decades, including creating "walking sounds" for Chewbacca in "The Empire Strikes Back", one of his first sound jobs! And listen to Scott tell us about creating specialty sounds for the Batmobile and Batwing in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", not to mention his lessons on working with voices, and at the heart of everything – creativity. Filmmakers will embrace Scott's knowledge and vision! (And not to worry. Scott will be back in the future!) One filmmaker who received the benefit of Scott's expertise directly today is THEO TAPLITZ. A filmmaker in his own right, Theo is now starring in his first feature film – Ira Sachs' LITTLE MEN. A multiple threat, Theo writes/directs/edits/shoots/acts and does sound on his short films, but now we get to see Theo break out as an actor in a feature film lead with LITTLE MEN. And while Theo talks about LITTLE MEN and getting into his character of "Jake Jardine" and working with Ira Sachs, he also puts on his own director's hat to talk sound design with Scott Hecker! One of the best BTL's yet, folks! http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
