– ROGER EARL –Celebrating 50 years of Foghat in 2021, Roger Earl is still ferociously banging away! Born in London, England (Hampton Court & raised in Hounslow) in 1946 to a musical family where his father played piano at home and local pubs and there was always music in the house. Although he wanted to play piano, his older brother Colin Earl (keyboard player with the band Mungo Jerry of ‘In the Summertime' fame) won that right. Roger began to play drums at the age of 12, took lessons for two years, and played with local bands around London while working as a commercial artist. He had a measure of success before auditioning for and joining the British Blues band Savoy Brown at age 20, with whom he recorded 5 albums (1967-1970) and toured the U.S. extensively. In 1970, Roger and Lonesome Dave Peverett decided to leave Savoy Brown to form Foghat. They enlisted former Savoy bass player Tony Stevens and Slide guitarist Rod Price and the rest has been rock n' roll history.Moving from England to the North Shore of Long Island in 1973, the band settled around the Port Jefferson area since their manager lived there. Roger loved the area and being an avid fisherman, especially enjoyed the fishing.During the 70's Foghat had a series of hit records such as “I Just Want to Make Love to You”, “Fool for the City”, “Slow Ride”, “Stone Blue”, “Drivin' Wheel”, “Third Time Lucky” and more. They were known as the hardest working band in Rock n' Roll since they toured 10 out of 12 months during this period.FOGHAT has a new album out called SONIC MOJO! https://foghat.comhttps://foghat.com/tour

Many rock fans have enjoyed music by Foghat, who originally formed in London back in 1971.Over the many decades of playing, the band members have changed, leaving behind only Roger Earl as the only original member. Bassist Rodney O'Quinn left the Pat Travers Band and joined the group in 2015 and has been laying down the low end for this iconic quartet keeping the Foghat legacy alive. With a new album titled “Sonic Mojo” which dropped on November 10th, the band is as busy as ever and there is lots of very tasty music to come.Join me as we learn of Rodney O'Quinn's musical journey, how he gets his sound, and his plans for the future. This episode first appeared in Bass Musician Magazine, in December 2023Go to jazzguitartoday.com and bassmusicianmagazine.com more interviews and lessons.
Hello everyone and welcome to the 426th episode of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. Sonic Mojo is Foghat's highly anticipated and long-awaited 17th studio album—their first in seven years--on the band's label, Foghat Records, which is distributed by Select-O-Hits (part of the Sun Records family). On Sonic Mojo founding member, drummer and leader of the pack Roger Earl is joined by stalwart guitarist, engineer, and co-producer Bryan Bassett (formerly with Wild Cherry and Molly Hatchet), fun-loving bassist Rodney O'Quinn (longtime member of the Pat Travers Band), and on lead vocals and guitar, Scott Holt (who toured and recorded with the legendary Buddy Guy for 10+ years). The new album absolutely cements Foghat's title as the undisputed Kings of Boogie Rock as it showcases the band's trademark crunchy riffs, soaring slide guitar leads, infectious melodies, bluesy influences, and their take-no-prisoners approach to their loud, heavy, blues-rock that fans everywhere can't get enough of. Three songs on Sonic Mojo have special meaning for Roger Earl, as they were co-written by Simmonds, the man who gave Roger his first break back in 1967 as a member of Savoy Brown. Sadly, shortly after writing these songs, Kim passed away in December 2022. Foghat continue to release new music every few years, and are in constant motion on the road, maintaining a rigorous touring schedule that has been a staple of the band since its formation. Rodney O'Quinn, Foghat's bassist since 2015 sits down to discuss their newest album SONIC MOJO, as well as reminiscing about tour life, the time he stepped away from music, and more.Biography (from Foghat website)At 5 years old, grabbing mom's vacuum cleaner like a mic stand singing “Hound Dog” by Elvis, Rodney O'Quinn was smitten and bitten by the music bug at an early age. By the time he was 11, a request from a friend simply saying “We need a Bass Player. You should get one!” would lead him to the first of many stages he would perform on.Straight out of High School, Rodney attained his higher education in Rock & Roll playing full time from 1984-1996 with various notable Bands out of the South East U.S. This included a 5-year stint with one of the South East's top touring/grossing bands, ELI which generated 2 well received albums. Averaging 240 shows a year left Rodney feeling burned out and ready for a change. He was leaving life on the road behind (or so he thought). In 2007 (Rodney describes it as an “itch that needed to be scratched”) music beckoned once again and he was compelled to answer. Rodney joined Pat Travers Band for what he thought would be a year or two on the road. Over the next eight and half years with the Pat Travers Band, Rodney played over 500 shows across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, U.K., Europe and Sweden and recorded 2 studio CD's and 2 Live CD/DVD's with the band. They also performed Live on the syndicated show RockLine Radio 3 times as well as a concert, “Live from Moondance Jam” which aired over 100 times on Direct TV.More than just a beast on the bass and a pretty face, Rodney used his business savvy background to handle many facets of the PTB organization. In 2010, he co-produced a run of shows that featured Pat Travers, Derek St Holmes, Mark Farner and Ronnie Montrose called Guitar Gods of the 70's. Along with other members of Pat's band, Rodney would play bass behind all of these Artists.During these extensive tours, as fate would have it, Rodney crossed paths many times with his friend and fellow bass player, Craig MacGregor of Foghat. After watching Rodney play, Craig Macgregor admired Rodney's talent and when the time was right, was called upon in 2015 to fill in for “Mac” and has since become a permanent part of the Foghat Family. Two years, 2 Foghat CD releases and 140+ shows (and counting) Rodney is honored to be able to add his touch to this piece of Foghat history.
