Chris Robertson's story is one of being all in. His mother describes his personality as being able to go from zero to a hundred in nothing flat. As you listen, you'll see why. When he commits to something, good or bad, he goes full throttle. Perhaps that's why, at his last arrest, he went on a three-hour high-speed chase. His prison stint started at 18 and he found himself in and out of federal or state prison for nearly 20 years. During another federal prison term, he started to realize he was just living up to the system's expectations and that maybe there was something different. In 2018, that something started to kick in as he started studying the psychology of the human brain. And then several years later, while in prison, he enrolled in Captain Your Story inside USCF in Salt Lake City.  Now he finds himself feeling different, thinking different and acting different. Still living with his all-in personality, he is all in and living a healthy, productive life full of intention.  Sponsors & Partners Freedom Scholars Academy (FSM) My Story Matters / Captain Your Story - mystorymatters.org The Other Side Academy (TOSA) - theothersideacademy.com 00:00 - Chris Robertson 02:00 - Sponsors 03:07 - Young Life 05:20 - Parents Drug Use 07:15 - Started Selling Drugs at 16yo & Using Meth 09:10 - Federal Prison 12:55 - The High Speed Chase 15:50 - Back to Federal Prison 20:30 - Back Again 22:00 - Changing His Appearance & Taking Care of His Health 24:35 - Getting a GM Position at Buffalo Wild Wings 28:30 - Financial Crisis & Cocaine 30:50 - Back to Meth & The Spiral 43:20 - Getting Back In a Positive Direction 44:55 - Addressing His Emotional & Physiological Needs 47:50 - Applying the Principles of Captain Your Story 52:40 - Interview for the Nonprofit My Story Matters 53:20 - Freedom Scholars Academy 57:55 - FSM Integrating with the Captain Your Story Model 1:07:55 - For Donations contact MarkH@mystorymatters.org

Chris Robertson from Black Stone Cherry joins me on Talkin' Rock. They'll be hoping on the ShipRocked cruise starting February 4 through the 10th.  Their latest album, their eighth, dropped last fall called Screamin' At The Sky. He tells me that he feels fortunate that they can put out new music and people still care, "You can't really ask for much more than that"  Chris told me about growing up in the middle of nowhere, in Edmonton, Kentucky. He said growing up he was surrounded by country music, as his father and grandfather were both bluegrass/country musicians. He said music videos helped craft his love of music. "I was a kid in the MTV generation, so all through the 90s you had great rock and roll being playing on TV." He told me about the first video he recalls watching.  Being from Kentucky, I'm surprised it took this long, but they've got their own bourbon now. They've teamed up with Three Chord Bourbon to develop their bourbon. He said management approached them with the idea. "It was a no-brainer for us." Chris just came back from Los Angeles for NAMM, and he told me about his new signature guitar called The Sarge. He said that way of life is ok for a few days, but he's a country boy through and through.  Black Stone Cherry is also playing Zakk Wylde's Berzurkus concert in mid-September in Pennsylvania. As far as playing live and touring, it's something he still loves to do. "I love it because it's new faces all the time, it continues to build." Yes, BSC is a road-dog band and that's ok with Chris. "We love it. We truly love playing music." He surprised me with a band he named as far as a "massive" influence on his band with roots in the Detroit area. That was a shocker.

Climate Psychology: A Matter of Life and Death (Phoenix Publishing House, 2022) offers ways to work with the unthinkable and emotionally unendurable current predicament of humanity. The style and writing interweave passion and reflection, animation and containment, radical hope, and tragedy to reflect the dilemmas of our collective crisis. The authors model a relational approach in their styles of writing and in the book's structure. Four chapters, each with a strikingly original voice and insight, form the core of the book, held either end by two jointly written chapters. In contrast to a psychology that focuses on individual behavior change, the authors use a transdisciplinary mix of approaches (depth psychology and psychotherapy, earth systems, deep ecology, cultural sociology, critical history, group and institutional outreach) to bring into focus the predicament of this period. While the last decade required a focus on climate denial in all its manifestations (which continues in new ways), a turning point has now been reached. Increasingly extreme weather across the world is making it impossible for simple avoidance of the climate threat. Wendy Hollway, Paul Hoggett, Chris Robertson, and Sally Weintrobe address how climate psychology illuminates and engages the life and death challenges that face terrestrial life. This book will appeal to three core groups. First, mental health and social care professionals wanting support in containing and potentially transforming the malaise. Second, activists wanting to participate in new stories and practices that nurture their engagement with the present social and cultural crisis. Third, those concerned about the climate emergency, wanting to understand the deeper context for this dangerous blindness. Karyne Messina is a licensed psychologist and psychoanalyst at the Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis and am on the medical staff of Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. So when Hailey decided to cut out alcohol from her life it felt like a part of her went missing. When it came to her passion for mixology and cocktails, she didn't look for a light at the end of the tunnel because she didn't realize there was even one there. Did that passion have to just disappear now?Hailey began to realize that there were tons of folks in her shoes. People who loved the energy and excitement around the service industry but decided to give alcohol the boot, yet still maintained their passion for the work they did. Slowly but surely, Hailey realized her passions were not only still accessible to her, but in a completely new, fresh, and healthy way. We're telling Hailey's story today in celebration of Sober October.
