BRUCE KULICK 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' with RAY SHASHO EPISODE 17 INTERVIEWED JUNE 22ND 2015 Got to Get Back is the latest release by KKB, a 1974 power trio that featured lead guitarist Bruce Kulick, singer/bassist Mike Katz, and drummer Guy Bois. It's a hard driving/progressive rock sound reminiscent to the styles of Cream, YES, and King Crimson. The band may have even become legendary if it hadn't been for their lack of professional guidance. The title track …“Got to Get Back” is a brand new song. Kulick says … “I thought the way we could celebrate it the best after 40 years was actually to record a new song with the same guys, I gave Mike a riff that I thought was similar to the kind of progressive /metal trio style we did back in 1974 and he ran with it and turned into a terrific song.” Got to Get Back by KKB is a timeless gem performed by three first-rate musicians. (5) Stars! BRUCE KULICK was a veteran guitarist for “The Hottest Band In The World” … KISS! It was during the unmasking period for the legendary rockers who officially appeared in public without makeup in an appearance on MTV in 1983. Kulick would join KISS as their fourth lead guitarist in less than three years and holds title to the longest continuous tenure of anyone other than Simmons and Stanley (September 1984 to August 1996). Although Kulick never wore the band's iconic makeup, he says …“It keeps my era a little bit more unique and sacred in a sense and I'm there to waive the flag for it.” Bruce Kulick played on (5) KISS studio albums … Asylum, Crazy Nights, Hot in the Shade, Revenge, Carnival of Souls: The Final Sessions. Kulick also appeared on Alive III and KISS Unplugged. The song "I Walk Alone" from Carnival of Souls: The Final Sessions is the only KISS track to feature Kulick as lead vocalist. To date, Kulick is featured on more than (20) KISS releases. The ‘Farewell Tour' featured original KISS members Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. Frehley left the group after the tour but Kulick was not asked to return as their lead guitarist; instead Tommy Thayer became the new spaceman for KISS. Kulick did however continue to work with the band by contributing on several albums. In 1997, Kulick formed ‘Union' with lead vocalist/guitarist John Corabi (Mötley Crüe, Ratt), drummer Brent Fitz (Slash, Vince Neil), and bassist James Hunting (David Lee Roth, Eddie Money). ‘Union' released (2) studio albums, two singles: "Old Man Wise" and "October Morning Wind," and a live album. Since 2001, Bruce Kulick has been the lead guitarist for Grand Funk Railroad. The original band was a power trio that featured current band members Don Brewer and Mel Schacher. I had the great please of chatting with Bruce Kulick recently about his latest release Got to Get Back with his first band KKB … Becoming a longtime guitarist with KISS … Playing with Grand Funk Railroad … Touring … Tommy Thayer … A new solo album? … The shock of being shot …My infamous ‘Field of Dreams' question … and much-much more! Here's my interview with the monstrous guitar player for KKB, Meatloaf, Blackjack w/Michael Bolton, KISS, Union, and Grand Funk Railroad … BRUCE KULICK.     Support us on PayPal!

Grand Funk Railroad's MARK FARNER: A Rock Icon's Journey

In 1969, Mark Farner, along with Don Brewer (drums and vocals) and Mel Schacher (bass), formed the band Grand Funk Railroad.  They quickly gained recognition for their energetic, bluesy rock sound.  The band's name was a play on words, inspired by the Grand Trunk Western Railroad that ran through their hometown of Flint, Michigan.  Grand Funk Railroad achieved massive success in the early 1970s. Their music was characterized by a blend of rock, funk, and blues.  The band released a series of hit albums, including "On Time" (1969), "Grand Funk" (1970), "Closer to Home" (1970), and "E Pluribus Funk" (1971). These albums produced chart-topping singles such as "We're an American Band" and "Some Kind of Wonderful.”  Known for their high-energy live performances, Grand Funk Railroad played to large crowds and set attendance records, including a legendary performance at the Shea Stadium in New York City.  Their music resonated with the counterculture of the time and made them one of the most popular and commercially successful rock bands of the era.  In 1972, Mark Farner left Grand Funk Railroad due to creative and contractual disputes.  He embarked on a solo career, releasing albums like "Mark Farner" (1977) and "No Frills" (1978). He continued to tour and record as a solo artist while Grand Funk Railroad continued with a modified lineup.  Grand Funk Railroad reunited in various lineups over the years, with Mark Farner rejoining the band for several reunions.  Their music continued to be celebrated, and they received numerous accolades and honours for their contributions to rock music.  Farner's guitar work and powerful vocals remained iconic in the world of rock. Some 50 years later something magical still happens when Farner takes the stage.  His voice is still strong and on key, his guitar playing still slick and lighting quick, and his trademark prancing still commands the stage and mesmerizes his audiences around the world. “I love playing live where I can connect with people of all backgrounds,” he said. “ It's all about the fans…and all about love.” Mark is also known for his philanthropic work and his strong Christian faith, which has been a central part of his life.  This week MARK FARNER joins us to share his story and incredible music. To learn more about Mark head for his website https://markfarner.com/ To connect with me with feedback or a request for a future guest on the show, send me a message through my website https://abreathoffreshair.com.au/ I hope you enjoy Mark Farner's story.

ROCK TALK WITH MITCH LAFON presents Grand Funk Railroad drummer, Don Brewer (recorded January 2020). During our conversation Don discusses the band's 2020 touring plans, recruiting hard rock guitarist Bruce Kulick, why new music isn't necessary, playing to pre-recorded tracks, Detroit, his band Flint, were their live albums - really live, the band's history and much more.  Quotes from the interview:  "This particular incarnation of Grand Funk has been touring for 20 years, but that's a fact and we keep it going because it's a fun show." Bruce Kulick: "We looked at videos of Bruce playing in a disco band. Bruce is a very capable guitar player. He doesn't just play the heavy metal stuff... he plays anything he wants to." "Let's be real, how many bands have the original members?... Personally, I can't foresee a Grand Funk out there with no original members, but certainly in this day and age - anything is possible." People often forget that one of the biggest bands of the 70s was Flint Michigan's own Grand Funk Railroad. They may forget this because the band isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they have a bunch of hits, but they haven't been played to death like "Stairway to Heaven," and they aren't written up continuously in Rolling Stone magazine. Original member and drummer Don Brewer and I discuss why this might be and how he feels about it. We also hear the stories behind several GFR hits and notable album tracks, what it was like being produced by Todd Rundgren and Frank Zappa, and the current state of the band which includes original member Mel Schacher and "new guys" Max Carl and Bruce Kulick, but not original member Mark Farner. Since it's Independence Day in the US this week, let's celebrate by remembering how great THE "American Band" still is!    https://www.grandfunkrailroad.com/

Grand Funk Railroad formed in Flint, Michigan in 1969, fusing R&B with rock and earning quite a name for themselves. From long jams like "I'm Your Captain" to tight pop hits like "Bad Time" to scaring hotel managers nationwide in "We're An American Band," this trio - now a quintet with two of the three original members - continues to tour and bang out the sound and spirit that's driven rock & roll for the last half-century. In this episode of the EricCast, I talk with founding member Don Brewer just ahead of a Wisconsin show. We discuss the band's roots, what's different today, how shows in the South and bringing back a gospel song helped them break through, and why they chose to cover "The Loco-motion," of all songs, and send it to #1 - again.

Who played a guitar with customization that included foam rubber, masking tape and glow-in-the-dark paint, watched Janis Joplin massage helicopter seats with chocolate bars and taught Frank Zappa how to shoot a handgun? Hint: Take the obvious answer. Mark Farner turns 70 on September 29, 2018 and lives life like a rockstar. Well...he is a rockstar. He prides himself on a phenomenal career as a musician, being a family man and a person of love. After Grand Funk initially disbanded in 1976, Farner released his first self-titled solo album in 1977, and his second, No Frills, in 1978 (both Atlantic Records). In 1981, Farner and Don Brewer launched a new Grand Funk line-up with bassist Dennis Bellinger and recorded two albums, Grand Funk Lives and What's Funk?. Farner went solo again with 1988's Just Another Injustice on Frontline Records. His third Frontline release was 1991's Some Kind of Wonderful, which featured a revamped version of the Grand Funk classic of the same name. Farner enjoyed success with the John Beland composition "Isn't it Amazing", which earned him a Dove Award nomination and reached No. 2 on the Contemporary Christian music charts. In the 1990s, Farner formed Lismark Communications with former Freedom Reader editor Steve Lisuk. Soon after, Farner began reissuing his solo albums on his own record label, LisMark Records. From 1994 to 1995, Farner toured with Ringo Starr's Allstars, which also featured Randy Bachman, John Entwistle, Felix Cavaliere, Billy Preston, and Starr's son, Zak Starkey.[8] In the late 1990s, Farner reunited with Grand Funk, but left after three years to resume his solo career. He currently tours with his band, N'rG, which plays a mixture of Grand Funk songs and Farner's solo offerings. Farner had a pacemaker installed October 22, 2012, having struggled with heart troubles for the prior eight years. Now he makes his way to the Historic Everett Theatre June 8th. This episode features a newer song "Take You Out" and a 1975 release "Some Kind of Wonderful" with the shared vocals of drummer Don Brewer and Farner.

A former Disc jockey, who wanted to be a singer in a rock and roll band approached Don one night after a gig and not only talked his way into the band but also got them to rename the band to Terry Knight and the Pack. He got his way because he could get gigs. Soon Mark Farner joined as a bass player.
