Hi everyone!I'm really thrilled to announce that my guest this week is Gavin Rossdale from BUSH!With over a billion streams, 20 million albums sold, and continued sold-out shows around the world in iconic venues and massive arenas, BUSH has truly earned their place in rock history. Since their explosive debut back in 1994 with Sixteen Stone—which sold six million copies and gave us iconic pop classics like “Comedown,” “Machinehead,” and “Glycerine”—they've been unstoppable. Their follow-up, Razorblade Suitcase, produced by Steve Albini, hit #1 on the Billboard charts and went triple platinum, with the single “Swallowed” topping the charts too. Over the years, BUSH has racked up an incredible 23 consecutive Top 40 hits on the Modern and Mainstream Rock charts—six of which hit #1!We kick things off chatting about what fans can expect from BUSH's current tour across Canada, the US, and Europe—and having just seen them live, I can vouch the show is packed with wall-to-wall hits and stage energy that's off the charts! From there, Gavin shares his love for life on the road and what it means to still have such a powerful connection with fans after all these years. We then dive into BUSH's upcoming album, I Beat Loneliness, which explores themes of mental health and personal growth—something Gavin talks about with real honesty and insight. We shift gears to talk about the current rock scene, his passion for tennis, and how his brand new cooking show, Dinner with Gavin, came together.Enjoy as I also feature the current single “60 Ways to Forget People” along with clips from some earlier albums. UP NEXT -Ian Thomas! He's a Juno Award-winning singer, songwriter, film composer, author, and actor. I dive into his incredible career, starting with his 1973 debut album Ian Thomas, which gave us the classic hit Painted Ladies. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Listeners of our show know of our love for Led Zeppelin and their iconic lead singer, Robert Plant. Already this year we've devoted 2 shows to Physical Graffiti as it turned 50, a show on The Firm's debut album featuring Jimmy Page and one on the documentary Becoming Led Zeppelin which is now available on streaming services. And though we've reviewed several classic Zeppelin albums, we've also gone track x track on Unledded, Robert's reunion with Jimmy Page in 1994, and his first two solo efforts. Based on the strength of Pictures at 11 and The Principle of Moments and the fact that Robert was working with the same bandmates, we thought it only right that we review his 3rd solo effort, Shaken N Stirred. However, Shaken N Stirred found Robert yearning for a more modern and synthesized sound which is not only different from his first two solo albums but not in the wheelhouse of his talented bandmates. In an effort to sound more like Talking Heads, Robert embraced the latest technology and styles of the day. The result is not only a departure from his signature sound but a miss in making a record that would sound good in 1985, nevermind 40 years later. While Little By Little was a hit in the US (#1 Mainstream Rock), the rest of the record is a mish mash of sounds that don't necessarily make listenable songs. The listening public in the US revolted against the 2nd single Too Loud and rock fans in Chicago demanded that they "Get that sh*t off the air!" While we admire artists for going in new directions and not wanting to be stuck by what the public deems as "their sound", this album didn't win Robert any new fans and alienated many that he already had. With that in mind, we did our best to pick out what we did like and tried to understand what Robert was attempting to do. Amidst the backdrop of his marriage ending and his unsure footing in the music world post Led Zeppelin, this one stands out in his catalog as one maybe he wishes he could do over (or at least we wish he would). Robert would continue to reinvent himself throughout his career with some amazing results. But as this misstep turns 40, we dive into what went wrong. Eric Bass is best known as the co-songwriter, producer, and bassist for multi-platinum rock institution: Shinedown, who holds the record for most No. 1 singles on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. In November 2024, he released his first solo single: “MindControl,” from his debut solo album, slated for release on February 28, 2025.“Eric BassPresents: I Had a Name” is an immersive, expansive, and richly thematic work. As well versed in KISS and Van Halen as to Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, Bass poured passion and creativity into I Had a Name.In this episode, we had a great talk about this; the upcoming Shinedown tour, and our coping mechanisms with mental health. It does get deep; so extra discretion is advised.
On this week's program we will look at the use of odd time signatures in Progressive Rock (and occasionally in Mainstream Rock). We'll hear from some of the big names like Yes, Genesis, The Flower Kings, Pink Floyd, Rush, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, and more! Plus, a few surprises from the "mainstream"!
Rage Against the Machine recorded their eponymously named debut album in May-June of 1992 and released it in November 1992. The Los Angeles-based group consisted of Zack de la Rocha on vocals, Tom Morello on guitar, Tim Commerford on bass, and Brad Wilk on drums. The group was known for their anti-establishment and politically charged lyrics. Rage Against the Machine combined a lot of genres of music into a single hard-hitting sound. The influence of hard rock and metal is clear, and elements of rap, funk, hip hop, and punk rock are clearly infused into the sound. This group was not just political in nature, every song is laced with revolutionary rants. The group draws inspiration from mondern revolutionary groups such as the IRA and the Black Panthers, and is highly critical of the policies of the United States, both foreign and domestic. RATM's debut album is largely based on their demo tape released a year before, which contained seven of the ten songs appearing on the album. That demo tape was recorded prior to the group's first live show, and was used as a means to build awareness of the group in the days before their signing with Epic Records. The album was a quick critical success and a slower commercial success. The group began to really take off on the strength of the single "Killing In the Name," and after their performance at the Lollapaloosa festival in mid 1993.Lynch brings us this high energy album in this week's podcast. BombtrackThe opening track starts with a strong guitar riff, and deals with themes of social injustice and resistance against oppression. Bullet In the HeadMedia manipulation and control of information are the issues dealt with in this track, which became a staple of the band's live shows. "Just victims of the in-house drive-by / They say jump, you say how high."Wake UpThis song will be familiar to fans of the 1999 film "The Matrix," as it is used at the conclusion when Neo calls the Matrix announcing he will reveal their existence. They lyrics are a critique of racism, the CIA and government corruption.Killing In the NameThe big single from the album addresses police brutality and institutional racism. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Face to Face by Siouxie & the Banshees (from the motion picture “”)This movie based on the Stephen King novel starring James Caan and Kathy Bates would win Bates an Oscar for Best Actress. STAFF PICKS:Empress of Pop by Insane JaneWayne starts the staff picks with an underrated local Georgia band. This song is a screed against Sinead O'Conner. Insane Jane produced two albums, the first called "Each Finger," and the second (which contains this song) entitled "Green Little Pill."Let's Get Rocked by Def LeppardDuring a time when hard rock was on the downswing, it is nice to hear a solid rocker which would have been at home on any of Def Leppard's 80's albums. Rob's staff pick shows that there was still some solid rock music going on in the midst of the grunge movement.57 Channels (and Nothin' On) by Bruce SpringsteenBruce features a Springsteen song which reflects the proliferation of cable television, but not necessarily good content on the tube. While Springsteen considers this sone a bit of a "playful misfire," the song did go to number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 6 on the Mainstream Rock charts.Would? by Alice In ChainsLynch closes out the staff picks with a song written as a tribute to Andrew Wood, the late lead singer of Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990. The lyrics deal with the aftermath of rehab and the uncertainty of the future. NOVELTY TRACK:Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray CyrusLong before his daughter began her career in "Hannah Montana," Billy Ray Cyrus was all over the charts with this cheesy country song. With an unprecedented four Juno awards for songwriter of the year, Jim Vallance is one of Canada's pre-eminent songwriters and the creative force behind top tracks for artists like Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Joe Cocker and Glass Tiger. He played drums with the Vancouver band Prism, and wrote their first single, Spaceship Superstar (which was played on the Discovery Space Shuttle). After touring with Prism, he became a session musician before a chance meeting with 18-year-old Bryan Adams determined his songwriting career direction. The two began a fruitful decades-long songwriting collaboration. Adams's album, Cuts Like a Knife, yielded three hit singles co-written with Vallance, and reached platinum. The follow-up album Reckless cemented the Vallance-Adams writing partnership in the annals of rock music. No. 1 on the Canadian and U.S. album charts, it sold five times platinum, with six Vallance co-writes in the Top 15, including the duo's first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single, Heaven; and the No. 1 Mainstream Rock tracks Run To You and Somebody. Vallance concentrated on songwriting, penning a non-stop stream of hit rock ballads, including the now-famous chart-topping charity single Tears Are Not Enough, a collaboration with Adams and fellow Canadian producer David Foster. Jim's creative talent has benefitted top international acts like Pat Benatar, Roger Daltry, Neil Diamond, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Joan Jett, The Go-Go's, Rick Springfield, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Anne Murray, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Chilliwack, Loverboy, Toronto, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, KISS and The Scorpions. Vallance went on to collaborate with Adams on songs for the Broadway show Pretty Woman: The Musical. He has served on the boards of SOCAN, the Songwriters Association of Canada, and FACTOR, is a member of the Order of Canada, and boasts 22 SOCAN Classic awards and the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Gavin Rossdale, best known as the lead vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter of the legendary rock band Bush, joins Rhett to talk about his writing process, the new music that he's working on, and what he's learned from working with some of music's most talented producers. Gavin tells Rhett about the moment when he discovered punk rock, and explains why authenticity and individuality are the secret to living a creative life. After three decades, well over 20 million records sold, a GRAMMY® Award nomination, 1 billion streams, and a procession of #1 hits, Bush stand tall as rock outliers whose imprint only widens as the years pass. Their catalog spans the platinum The Science of Things [1999] through Black and White Rainbows [2017]. Thus far, they have notched 25 straight Top 40 hits on the Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts, earning seven #1 entries - most recently, 2022's "More Than Machines" off 2022's The Art of Survival. In this episode we go through the Clapton's version of the Freddie King song I'm Tore Down. This one has some awesome lead work and one of blues musics greatest rhythm riffs - it's a blast to play and a must know for any blues jam or gig.English rock musician Eric Clapton recorded "I'm Tore Down" for his 1994 blues tribute album From the Cradle.[3] For his recording, Clapton uses an arrangement close to King's original, including the falsetto vocal phrases and guitar fills. Reprise Records released a compact disc promotional single in 1994, which reached number five on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.[4] Clapton has performed the song on several occasions; live recordings appear on Live in Hyde Park (1997) and John Mayall's 70th Birthday Concert (2003). While the album Whitesnake may not be the debut album from the band Whitesnake, this self-titled seventh studio album might as well be a debut, as only two members were present from the previous album. Known in the UK as 1987, and in Japan as Serpens Albus, this album featured returning members John Sykes on guitars and backing vocals, and David Coverdale on lead vocals. Additionally Neil Murray was on bass, Aynsley Dunbar was on percussion, and Don Airey was on keyboards.David Coverdale was the lead singer for Deep Purple, and left the group in 1976. He did a couple of solo albums, the first of which was named “White Snake.” He formed the band Whitesnake as his backing band in 1978. They had a lot of success in the UK, Europe, and Japan with their early albums, but Coverdale wanted to break through in North America by the mid-80's. He started moving from a blues/hard rock sound to a more glam metal sound, starting with the album "Slide It In" in 1984, and fully embraced the heavy metal sound and hair band image with this album.Whitesnake would get significant airplay, with two singles going to number 1 (Here I Go Again) and number 2 (Is This Love?) on the Billboard US charts. Their videos would be staples of MTV, with prominent exposure of Tawny Kitaen, Coverdale's girlfriend and soon-to-be wife. The band would be broken up shortly after the album was complete, leaving David Coverdale as the sole member by the time they went on tour. This was despite the fact that John Sykes co-wrote all but two of the songs on the album. Get your hair metal on as Bruce puts his metal hair on, presenting this week's album. Bad BoysA deeper cut, this song is heavy on the rock and light on the significance of the lyrics. “Bad bad boys, getting wild in the street, wild in the city, I see you - you see me.” Much of the album has this heavy rock sound.Crying In the Rain '87This track that starts the album is a reworked song originally released by the group in 1982. The original is more bluesy and has a slower tempo than this version. The song was inspired by David Coverdale's divorce.Give Me All Your LoveThis was the fourth single from the album, and it reached number 58 on the US Top 100 charts. By the time the single was released in January 1988 a new guitar solo had been recorded by Vivian Campbell, replacing guitarist and co-writer John Sykes. Campbell would tour with the band but would leave before the next album.Still of the NightThe first single from the album may have only hit number 79 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it received significant airplay on rock stations and MTV. The comparisons to Led Zeppelin were frequent, not just for the guitar riffs, but also for the heavy drumming and similarity between the vocalizations of Coverdale and Robert Plant. The song is about obsession, maybe a vampire, maybe a stalker. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Love and Marriage by Frank Sinatra (from the television series “Married...With Children”)This anti-Cosby Show family dystopia followed the antics of shoe salesman Al Bundy and his family. STAFF PICKS:Tonight, Tonight, Tonight by GenesisLynch gets the staff picks going with a single from Genesis's album Invisible Touch. It went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 despite being written less as a pop song and more like the prog rock style that Genesis used earlier in the decade. The lyrics are about a conversation with a drug dealer, a fact that must have been missed when Michelob used the song to promote their beer.Love Removal Machine by The CultWayne's staff pick is the first single from The Cult's third album, Electric. It went to number 15 on the Mainstream Rock charts in the United States. Lead singer Ian Astbury compares this song to getting on your favorite motorcycle. The opening riff is often compared to “Start Me Up” by the Rolling Stones.Ahead by Wire Rob features the closest post punk band Wire would get to a pop single. It has a spacey, ethereal sound. Wire had extensive influence over many groups, including Sonic Youth, The Cure, and R.E.M. First We Take Manhattan by Jennifer WarnesBruce closes out the staff picks with a song written by Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. Jennifer Warnes originally did this song for a Cohen tribute album, and it features guitarist extraordinaire Stevie Ray Vaughan. The song itself is dark and apocalyptic, with lyrics told from the perspective of a terrorist. COMEDY TRACK:Put Down the Duckie by Hoots the Owl and ErnieWe first learned that we have to put down the duckie if we want to play the saxophone from this skit, which aired on Sesame Street for the first time in April 1987.
By 2005, Nickelback could already lay claim to being one of the most ubiquitous bands in the world. Having already achieved unbelievable success with Hits like “How You Remind Me” “Too Bad” and “Someday”, Nickelback had long crossed over from being a little band from Hanna, Alberta into bonafide global Rock Stars. Armed with earnest lyrics, catchy melodies, and of course the aforementioned heartstring-tugging video - it's no surprise that Photograph was a smash success. Photograph topped the Mainstream Rock charts, The Hot 100 charts, it went double platinum in America, and remained number one in Canada for 7 weeks. But it would be dishonest to say that the band was without a legion of critics and naysayers. Join Myles Galloway as he tells the story of 'Photograph' and hear from the band themselves as they give their thoughts on the song that immortalized them in music and memes forever. Johnson's distinctive guitar skills, vocals, and captivating stage presence, combined with Maxey's solid bass lines and rhythmic foundation, formed the core of the band's signature sound. Black Stone Cherry was formed in 2001 by childhood friends who have released 8 rockin' studio albums every since. Nearly 20 singles have landed on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. Born and raised in Kentucky, their sound is Southern Rock with a harder edge. Multi-award winning program director Ray White caught up with co-founders Chris Robertson and John Fred Young on their tour bus before a show in June of 2023. Most people are familiar with the actor, Sean Penn. His older brother, Michael Penn went in a more musical direction, becoming a singer, songwriter, and producer. His debut album, March, would achieve both critical and commercial success, peaking on the US album charts at number 31. This would be his most successful album commercially, though his follow-up albums were received positively by the critics.Manhattan native Michael Penn was the first son of actor/director Leo Penn and actress Eileen Ryan. He began his musical journey in junior high school, and joined the Los Angeles band Doll Congress before embarking on a solo career. He appeared as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live in 1987 when his younger brother Sean was the host. He would garner attention, however in 1989 with his debut album, March. It would earn him the 1990 MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist, and its first single "No Myth" would rise to number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Michael Penn would go on to marry singer-songwriter Aimee Mann (who fronted the new wave group 'Til Tuesday) in 1997. The couple are still together and living in Los Angeles. Rob brings us this singer-songwriter because he has created interesting songs with clever lyrics, and his underrated status may indicate that our listeners haven't heard his music beyond his first single. We hope you enjoy this artist and perhaps discover some music from the late 80's that you haven't heard before - or haven't heard in a while. No MythThis is the first and most successful single from the album. It made it to number 5 on the Mainstream Rock charts and number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is about a guy who is rejected by a girl even though he knows he could make her happy. “We said goodbye before hello, my secrets she will never know, and if I dig a hole to China I'll catch the first junk to Soho.”Half HarvestThe second song on the album is an understated deeper cut that sounds like a break-up song, or a tune about faded romance. “So move out of your bed of roses, now. I'm putting in a bed of nails.”Brave New WorldThis is a jangle pop, rockabilly song with great harmonies and fast-paced lyrics. It ends with a jazz jam and we feel it has a road trip feel in the lyrics as the singer drives into the brave new world. This & ThatThis single hit number 10 on the Modern Rock charts, and also has a quick lyric cadence. “I'll do this and I'll do that, I'll be burning canyons for you. I'll do this and I'll do that and I will wait forever if you'll be there.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Hymn to Red October (from the motion picture The Hunt for Red October)Sean Connery takes the lead in the first of the Tom Clancy books to hit the big screen. The idea of a defecting Soviet sub was a compelling concept in the late 80's, well before the communist government fell apart. STAFF PICKS:Cuts You Up by Peter Murphy Bruce's staff pick went to number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100, but dominated the then-new Billboard Alternative Songs chart, spending seven weeks at number 1 on that chart. Peter Murphy was the lead singer of the group Bauhaus, which gave us the song “Bela Lugosi's Dead.” Murphy and guitarist Paul Statham wrote this song which is about how the path of self-knowledge and discovery will ruin your assumptions, keeping you from getting arrogant.I Go to Extremes by Billy JoelLynch reminds us that things tend to go awry when musician Billy Joel writes a song for his wife. Indeed Joel's relationship with Christie Brinkley would come to an end in 1994 after it inspired this song that was a single from his album Stormfront. The idea of this song is a recognition that Joel can be compared to a roller coaster of emotion. Up All Night by Slaughter Wayne brings us a hair band hit from the peak of “big hair.” Las Vegas, based Slaughter is named after vocalist and guitarist Mark Slaughter who formed the band in 1988 with bassist Dana Strum. The band is completed by guitarist Tim Kelly and drummer Blas Elias. The song is pretty much the anthem of the hair bands - up all night, sleep all day. Baby, It's Tonight by Jude Cole Rob finishes the staff picks with singer-songwriter, manager, and producer Jude Cole. He has a sound similar to John Waite, and started with the band Lifehouse. Cole also started a record label called Iron Works with actor Kiefer Sutherland. This song made it to number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. COMEDY TRACK:As Kosher As They Wanna Be by 2 Live Jews Oy Vey! I hope we don't get cancelled for this comedy track which was on the charts at the time.
Skirting the edges of stardom, Chris Whitley passed away far too young at 45, but left a catalog of albums more influential than they were ever popular. A wide array of artists, from John Mayer to Joe Bonamassa have lauded Whitley's playing and songwriting, so we're diving into this 1995 sophomore album Din of Ecstasy. Whereas his debut was a slickly produced blues rock album that produced a Top 40 Mainstream Rock chart hit, the follow-up sounds more in line with the happenings of the decade. The big fuzz of Dinosaur Jr. appears on "Din," while a guitar solo on "God Thing" conjures images of Soundgarden's Kim Thayil, as Whitley embraces complex guitar riffs and atmospheric production that sound both of the time and timeless. The only hitch? The album is a slow burn, and a checked-out, background noise listen won't do it justice. From cathartic metal and alt-rock balladry to danceable funk and power pop, their music consistently surprises and engages fans. They released their debut album, "Letters from Chutney," under the name "Rainbow Butt Monkeys" in 1995, before adopting the name Finger Eleven for their subsequent LP, "Tip." The album caught the attention of Wind-up Records, who signed the band in 1997 and re-released "Tip" a year later.Through relentless touring with bands like Creed and Fuel, as well as participating in the Vans Warped Tour, Finger Eleven broke into the US market with singles like "Above," which became a Top 40 hit on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. They continued their momentum with "The Greyest of Blue Skies" (2000), featuring singles like "First Time" and "Drag You Down," which achieved Gold certification in Canada and reached No. 17 on This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.
On this Peter Woods interview: The last minute inclusion of Never Say Never and how this charting single almost didn't get made… Why Romeo Void broke up, Peter's top 3 musical experiences… going to law school, becoming a lawyer and then changing everything by moving to Japan. The upside and downside to living in Japan… WORST gig ever (you'd be shocked who they opened for), opening for U2 and having a blast with The Edge… being open to changing your course, and much more. Fun and relaxed convo! Cool Guitar, Music & ELG T-Shirts!: http://www.GuitarMerch.com Peter is a founding member and the guitar player of the iconic 80's alternative rock / new wave band, Romeo Void, from San Francisco. The band had two hit songs: Never Say Never, which reached #27 on the Mainstream Rock charts. It's the kind of song that evokes a very specific early 80's alternative rock time period. Their other hit was A Girl in Trouble (is a Temporary Thing), which was a Top 40 pop single in 1984. Both songs were staples on MTV video rotation, and Never Say Never has been in many soundtracks. The band has just released Live From Mabuhay Gardens (in San Francisco), their first official live LP, recorded in November 1980. Brent Smith is known as one of the best voices in rock thanks to his work as the lead singer, primary lyricist, and contributing songwriter to the band Shinedown. Formed in Jacksonville, Florida, Shinedown has gone on to land 30 singles in the Top 5 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. With 18 of those songs reaching the top spot, the band holds the record for the most number one singles in the chart's history. Their music has been streamed more than 6.5 billion times around the globe, and 15 of their singles have been certified either gold, platinum, or multi-platinum. Shinedown has sold more than 10 million records, and their latest album, Planet Zero, is continuing the trend of rock dominance. In our conversation with Brent he shares how Otis Redding opened his eyes, why he's committed to suicide prevention, and the nuts and bolts of his writing process with the band.
Drivin' N' Cryin' hit the peak of their commercial success with this fourth studio album, Fly Me Courageous. It was released in January at the same time as the start of the Persian Gulf War, and they benefitted from patriotic associations the title song received. The album peaked at 90 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The band at the time included Buren Fowler on guitar, Kevin Kinney on guitar and vocals, Tim Nielson on bass and backing vocals, and Jeff Sullivan on percussion. The album was produced and engineered by Geoff Workman, an English producer who also worked with Journey, The Cars, and Queen. The name Drivin' N' Cryin' was a reference to the band's fusion of driving rock and roll and a bit of a country twang (the crying).Georgia based Drivin' N' Cryin' had formed in 1985, honing their craft at the 688 Club in Atlanta. The band released a number of albums and singles prior to Fly Me Courageous which had been successful on college and independent radio. This album was more rock oriented, as would be their follow-up album, Smoke. Drivin' N' Cryin' would tour with Neil Young and with Soul Asylum.Drivin' N' Cryin' tours today, and is a great act to see live.Rob brings us this Georgia band this week. Fly Me CourageousThe title track took off quite literally with the start of the Gulf War. It was considered a patriotic song and was included in the playlists of many military pilots, even though the song itself is more about confronting aggression than celebrating it. The band received a number of requests to perform at military bases after the release of this track, which hit number 19 on the US Mainstream Rock charts. The InnocentThis track was also a successful single, and starts with a parody of the US Constitution. It talks about the discrepancy between politicians providing hand-outs and the desire of people to improve themselves. "Get used to it. The innocent."Around the Block Again A deeper cut, this fast paced track has a sound reminiscent of Rod Stewart or the Rolling Stones. The lyrics reflect hypocrisy in religion, relationships, and music. Build a FireThis shuffle beat single has a bit of a punk rock feel, and even has a small rap sequence in the middle. "Bored with the American holstered blues, peace signs on just about everything. Don't know where to turn or what they say." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Break On Through (To the Other Side) by the Doors (from the motion picture sountrack "The Doors") Val Kilmer owns the role as Jim Morrison in this movie about the band. STAFF PICKS:American Society by L7 Wayne starts off the staff picks with an all-female punk band, that often gets associated with the Nirvana grunge sound. This is a cover song originally done by a punk band called "Eddie and the Subtitles" from Orange County, California in the early 80's.All This Time by Sting Bruce features the first single off Sting's third studio album, "The Soul Cages." Sting had writer's block for several years after the death of his father in 1987, and many songs on this album reflect the tumultuous relationship he had with his father. It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over by Lenny KravitzJohn brings us a crossover hit that went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The style was inspired by Motown and Earth, Wind & Fire. The lyrics reflect the marital struggles Kravitz was experiencing with his then-wife Lisa Bonet.Someone to Love by Roger McGuinnRob closes out the staff picks with former Byrds front man Roger McGuinn and a single from his sixth studio album, "Back from Rio." This is the lead-off track from the album. It made it to number 12 on the Mainstream Rock charts. McGuinn used a number of familiar artists on his album, including Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and David Crosby. COMEDY TRACK:Lisa, Lisa (The One I Adore) by Pauly Shore Pauly Shore was all over MTV during the early 90's.
This week on Indiecast, Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen delve into the world of mainstream rock and assess the state of major-label bands waving the flag for guitars in a pop-dominated world. In the "meat" portion of the episode, they review the recent album by the viral Italian band Måneskin (30:28), who make their (mostly) English language debut with Rush! Is this record enjoyably dumb or just plain dumb? They report, you decide! They also talk about the latest LP from White Reaper (44:09), Asking For A Ride, a lovable one-time indie act who made the transition to the big leagues without losing their sense of humor or ability to write a hearty arena-rock hook.In the banter segment (1:40), they talk about the latest news regarding Panic! At The Disco (they're breaking up) and Fall Out Boy (they're putting out a new album). They then transitioned to talking about a happier topic — the 20th anniversary of Zwan's Mary Star Of The Sea, a long lost classic worth revisiting (14:39).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. The supergroup U.K. was founded by former King Crimson percussionist Bill Bruford (also a former founder of Yes) and bassist and vocalist John Wetton (also a former member of Uriah Heep, and Roxy Music). After failing to reform King Crimson, each of the two brought in a musician they thought would work well in the group. Wetton brought in Eddie Jobson, violinist and keyboardist from Frank Zappa's band. Bruford brought in Allan Holdsworth on guitars (who had worked on Bruford's prior solo project. Their self titled debut album was released in May, 1978. Although a couple of songs were edited for single release, the album U.K. is best known as a prog rock masterpiece, and is cited as inspirational to many musicians who followed in the prog rock genre. After an extensive tour supporting the album, Wetton and Jobson had a falling out with Holdsworth and fired him. Bill Bruford left at that time and was replaced by Terry Bozzio, another alumnus of Frank Zappa's band and a future founding member of Missing Persons. John Wetton would go on in the days after U.K. to be the front man for Asia.Rob brings us the prog rock monster-piece. In the Dead of NightThe track that leads off the album was one of two songs to be edited for release as a single. On the album it is the first of three songs which form a continuous suite on the first album side. The 7/4 time and the synthesizer - the Yamaha CS-80 had just been released - are prog rock hallmarks. The electric violin is an unusual addition.By the Light of DayThis track is the second movement of the "In the Dead of Night" suite. Rather than have a clear change in tracks, there is a slow transition via a "spacey" interlude into the new song of the suite. "Black clouds moving gray skies to thunder. Kinetic sunrise fever and flood. Fire and water element anger horizon melting to blood."Presto Vivace and RepriseThis is the third movement of the "In the Dead of Night suite. This is a much faster piece (as the term Vivace would suggest) before transitioning back into a reprise of "In the Dead of Night."Time to KillThe abrupt start to this song is due to the way the tracks drift into each other. The concept is that of boredom, of being stuck in a place. "Time to kill, going nowhere, killing time, staying where there's time to kill, going nowhere..." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:That'll Be the Day by Buddy Holly (from the motion picture "The Buddy Holly Story") Gary Busey was nominated for the Oscar for his portrayal of early rocker Buddy Holly in this film. Busey would sing and play for the part. STAFF PICKS:Goodbye Girl by David Gates Bruce leads off the staff picks with a soft rock solo from former Bread front man David Gates. The song is from the Neil Simon movie "The Goodbye Girl," which would lead to Richard Dreyfuss becoming the youngest man to win an Oscar for Best Actor at the time. Lay Down Sally by Eric Clapton Brian presents a pop hit from Clapton's album Slowhand. It went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was written by Clapton, George Terry (guitar), and Marcy Levy (who sings the female parts on the song). It was written in the country blues style of J.J. Cale, and hit number 26 on the Hot Country Songs chart, Clapton's best showing on that chart as a crossover.Ain't It Fun by Dead BoysWayne features a song from Cleveland's own Dead Boys. This song appears on their second studio album, "We Have Come for Your Children." They were known as one of the rowdiest bands on the punk scene. It hit number 8 on the Mainstream Rock charts, and is an ode to the punk rock lifestyle. With a Little Luck by WingsRob brings us Paul McCartney with a song recorded largely in the Virgin Islands on a yacht equipped with a 24-track mobile recording studio installed on it. This single from the album "London Town" hit number 1 on the pop charts. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Alaska by U.K. This instrumental lets us do some double dipping with the track that leads off side 2 of the U.K. album.
Iconoclassic Records is headed to the "Dark Side" with the first-ever anthology from the real-life band behind Hollywood's Eddie and The Cruisers: John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band. On September 30, the label released Greatest Hits, a freshly remastered 16-track collection from the rock-and-roll revivalists whose "On the Dark Side" reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984 and spent five weeks atop the Mainstream Rock chart and the MTV video charts. Singer-guitarist Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band (including Gary Gramolini on lead guitar, Pat Lupo on bass, Kenny Jo Silva on drums, Bobby Cotoia on keyboards, and Michael Antunes on saxophone) had been playing up a storm in their native Rhode Island as well as up and down the Northeast Corridor - Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey - throughout the 1970s and early 1980s when producer Kenny Vance offered them an enticing proposition. Music biz veteran Vance was a founding member of Jay and the Americans and an instrumental figure in the discovery of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, a.k.a. Steely Dan. He was looking for a band to craft the music for the eponymous fictional band in the movie Eddie and The Cruisers, and Cafferty's high-energy bar band fit the bill perfectly.

Bad English is a supergroup composed of members of Journey and The Babys. From The Babys comes John Waite on lead vocals, Rick Phillips on bass, and Jonathan Cain on keyboards. From Journey comes Neal Schon in lead guitar, and Jonathan Cain, the common thread between the two groups. Deen Castronovo is on drums and would later join Journey. The band was initially formed by Cain, Schon, and Waite. The name Bad English comes from a term in the game of pool. John Waite missed a shot, and Jonathan Cain made a comment on how bad his English was.The group was attempting to sound original and not too much like either of their previous groups or Waite's solo work. They were also being pulled by the record producers towards a highly produced sound common with the hair metal groups of the time. The group wrote about 40 songs in six months for the debut album, eponymously named Bad English, but Waite stated that “a lot of them weren't very good.” There were enough good songs to create a hit album, however, as this debut went to number 21 on the Billboard 200 charts. Bad English would produce one other album after this debut, but it wasn't very successful. Shortly thereafter the group disbanded with Waite continuing solo work, and with some other members re-joining Journey.Bruce brings us this supergroup. Best of What I GotThis is the opening track to the album, and was the fifth of seven singles released - though this one was only released on US rock charts. It hit number 9 on the Mainstream Rock charts. It was also featured in the credits to the buddy cop film "Tango & Cash."Lay DownA deeper track written by Waite, Schon, and Cain, this track was not released as a single. It is a bid more rocking, with lyrics about coming back from a trip and getting together with your girl. Forget Me NotThe first single from the album was a darker song written by Waite, Cain, and Mark Spiro, a songwriter and record producer who worked with a number of musicians. Spiro collaborated on this and four other tracks from the album. The inspiration for these lyrics are Anne Rice's vampire novels. The lyrics deal with possession, lust, and a longing that goes on throughout eternity. When I See You SmileThis is the big hit single which went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Diane Warren, an American songwriter and hitmaker for many artists from Celine Dion to Milli Vanilli, wrote this hit. Ironically it would create a rift within the group as they struggled with whether to seek hits on the next album or to create their own material. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter by Iron Maiden (from the motion picture "A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child”)Freddy Kruger continues his rampage in this fifth installment of the horror franchise. STAFF PICKS:Once Bitten, Twice Shy by Great WhiteBrian starts off this week's staff picks with the biggest hit from LA hair band White Snake. This song is a cover from a 1975 single from Ian Hunter, and appropriate for the title of their fourth album, "...Twice Shy." The lyrics reflect life on the road and learning from bad relationship experiences. The group lived on the road, touring for years. Love Song by The CureWayne's staff pick goes goth with a surprisingly positive song from a notoriously dark group. Robert Smith, The Cure's lead singer, wrote this song as a wedding gift for his bride, Mary Theresa Poole. Smith and Poole married in 1988, though they had known each other since they were 14.Closer to Fine by the Indigo Girls Rob features an Atlanta based indie rock duo. This single is off their platinum selling self-titled second album. Amy Ray and Emily Saliers are joined on this album by multiple Georgia artists, including members of R.E.M. Amy and Emily met in elementary school, began performing together as high school students, and took the title of Indigo Girls in college.Something to Hold on To by Trevor RabinBruce brings us a single from Yes alumnus Trevor Rabin's fourth solo album. This single went to number 3 on the Mainstream Rock chart, and the video got a Grammy nomination for Best Short Form Music Video. Rabin would later re-join seven other Yes alumni for the Union album in 1991. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Chinese Torture by QueenQueen's thirteenth studio album provides this instrumental which closes out this week's podcast.
After the overwhelming success of his “Born to Run” album, Bruce Springsteen's next studio album would take a dramatically different approach. First, Tunnel of Love would be a solo project, and the E. Street Band was not credited as a contributor, though many members of the E. Street Band would be credited individually. Springsteen plays many of the instruments himself, and made use of drum machines and synthesizers on the tracks. Second, the lyrics look inward as Springsteen explores aspects of lost love. Springsteen was reacting to his troubled marriage to actress Julianne Phillips from whom he would receive divorce papers the following year. The divorce was finalized in 1989.Tunnel of Love was a critical and commercial success. Critics would praise the originality of the material and its introspective nature. The album would receive a Grammy award for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Solo at the 1988 Grammy awards. Commercially the album would hit number 1 on the Billboard 200 charts and go triple platinum. Five singles would be released from the album, three of which cracked the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.Brian brings us this album for today's podcast. Two FacesThis deeper cut explores how there is a lighter side and a darker side within each of us, and how we can come to hurt the ones we love. The singer prays that the “our love will make the other man go away,” but that other man is a part of us.Brilliant DisguiseThis was the first single released from the album, and it went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Mainstream Rock chart. It reflects doubt, first in the singer's lover, and later in the singer himself. The question is whether either has become a stranger to the other. One Step UpThis third single from the album was only released as a single in the U.S. Unlike much of the album, this song was not recorded in Springsteen's home studio, but at A&M Studios in Los Angeles. The song reflects the troubles in Springsteen's marriage. Although Springsteen played all instruments, E Street Band member Patti Scialfa sings backup. Scialfa would marry Springsteen in 1991.Valentine's Day The last song on the album takes a surprisingly upbeat look at relationships, as the singer longs for his love. It's quite a contrast with the other songs on the album. “So hold me close honey say you're forever mine, and tell me you'll be my lonely valentine.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Mess Around by Ray Charles (from the motion picture “Planes, Trains and Automobiles”) With the abundance of Christmas movies, this is an unusual Thanksgiving comedy starring Steve Martin and John Candy trying to get home during the Holiday rush. STAFF PICKS:Time Stand Still by Rush Bruce leads off the staff picks with the first single from Rush's 12th studio album “Hold Your Fire.” The lyrics were inspired by Neal Peart's time in the band as he reflects on the things he missed while spending time on the road. 'Til Tuesday's lead singer and bassist Aimee Mann contributes backing vocals on this song. Hazy Shade of Winter by The BanglesWayne brings us a cover with a much faster beat than the original Simon and Garfunkel version. This song appeared on the soundtrack for the motion picture “Less Than Zero.” The Bangles had covered this song since 1983, and offered it to the movie rather than writing a new piece. The Bangle's version peaked at number 2 on the charts.Give to Live by Sammy Hagar The Red Rocker was still under contract for a solo album despite joining Van Halen, and Rob features this single off the album that fulfilled his commitment. Tidbit: Eddie Van Halen plays bass on this album.Little Lies by Fleetwood MacBrian finishes off the staff picks with a hit from the album “Tango In the Night.” Keyboardist Christine McVie takes her turn on lead with this song written by her and her husband at the time, Eddy Quintela. The idea is that sometimes little lies are easier to take than the truth. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Midnight by Joe SatrianiThis is an instrumental selection from Satriani's album “Surfing With the Alien,” released in 1987.
We've covered a number of underrated bands and albums, but perhaps the most underrated band of the 80's is 38 Special. Formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1974 by Donnie Van Zandt and Don Barnes, 38 Special had a string of hits in the late 70's through the 80's including "Hold On Loosely," "Rockin' Into the Night," and "If I'd Been the One." Special Forces is their fifth and most successful studio album, hitting number 10 on the Billboard 200.In addition to Van Zandt and Barnes, 38 Special's lineup for this album included Jeff Carlisi on guitar, Larry Junstrom on bass, Steve Brookins on drums, and Jack Grondin on drums. A number of songs on this album were co-written by Jim Peterik, singer-songwriter and founder of the group Survivor. Given the connection to Lynyrd Skynyrd (Donnie was the brother of original Skynyrd lead singer, Ronnie Van Zandt, and Junstrom was one of the founding members of Lynyrd Skynyrd), it is not surprising that their sound has its roots in Southern Rock. However, 38 Special tended towards a more mainstream hard rock sound. The name of the group comes from an incident where the police were called on the band during a late night practice session. The door was padlocked, and the police broke the lock by shooting it out ... with a 38 Special. Caught Up In YouThis is the first single and the big hit from the album, reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Mainstream Rock charts. Don Barnes sings lead on this track. The lyrics are self-explanatory, extolling a girl with whom the singer is completely entranced. You Keep Runnin' AwayBarnes has the lead duties from this song again. The lyrics describe a girl who has been burned in past relationships and has decided never to trust another man. The singer encourages her to not give up, that "someday, someway, somewhere love is gonna find you."Back Door Stranger A deeper cut from the album, the lyrics describe a serial rapist sneaking around, and what will happen to him if the singer catches up with him. "Take my chances, rather go to jail than see the eyes of a coward runnin' loose and well." The guitar has a great wah-wah sound, and Donnie Van Zandt takes his turn on lead vocals for this track.Chain Lightnin' The thunder sound is striking as both the intro and the outro for this iconic song. There's a little bit of a Pink Floyd echo to add to the mystery. "And it's hotter than hell in the heavens tonight." "And it's so tough when the satisfaction is greater than the risk."ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Ain't Got No Home by Clarence “Frogman” Henry (from the motion picture “Diner”)This novelty song was featured in the comedy-drama starring Steve Guttenberg and Kevin Bacon. STAFF PICKS:Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now) by Van Halen Bruce begins the staff picks with a deeper cut off the Diver Down album. This cover was originally recorded in 1924, and came to the band's attention when David Lee Roth recorded it off a late night AM radio station. Jan Van Halen, Eddie and Alex's father, is featured in this song playing clarinet.Did It in a Minute by Hall & Oates Brian features a hit off the "Private Eyes" album from duo Darryl Hall and John Oates. It was the third single from the album. The upbeat song is about finding love almost instantaneously. Hall wrote this with his girlfriend Sara Allen and her sister Janna, who came up with the chorus.Find Another Fool by QuarterflashWayne gets a second chance to feature Portland's own Quarterflash. This rocking minor-key song peaked at number 16 on the charts, and is a break-up song after the girl has had it with her ex-boyfriend's cheating ways. The name comes from an Australian slang phrase, "a quarter flash, three parts foolish." Quarterflash is the husband and wife team of Rindy and Marv RossMore Than This by Roxy MusicRob's staff pick is the first single off Roxy Music's last album, "Avalon." Bryan Ferry began writing the songs for Avalon while on the west coast of Ireland, and the music reflects the melancholy feel of the location. The song has an unusually long synth-driven outro. COMEDY TRACK:Piss On the Wall by the J. Geils BandSometimes you just must be going. However, we do recommend that you find a toilet first!

Linkin Park is an American rock band from Agoura Hills, California. The band's current lineup comprises vocalist/rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Mike Shinoda, lead guitarist Brad Delson, bassist Dave Farrell, DJ/turntablist Joe Hahn and drummer Rob Bourdon, all of whom are founding members. Vocalists Mark Wakefield and Chester Bennington are former members of the band. Categorized as alternative rock, Linkin Park's earlier music spanned a fusion of heavy metal and hip hop, while their later music features more electronica and pop elements.Formed in 1996, Linkin Park rose to international fame with their debut studio album, Hybrid Theory (2000), which became certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Released during the peak of the nu metal scene, the album's singles' heavy airplay on MTV led the singles "One Step Closer", "Crawling" and "In the End" all to chart highly on the Mainstream Rock chart; the latter crossed over to the pop chart. Their second album, Meteora (2003), continued the band's success. The band explored experimental sounds on their third album, Minutes to Midnight (2007). By the end of the decade, Linkin Park was among the most successful and popular rock acts. The band continued to explore a wider variation of musical types on their fourth album, A Thousand Suns (2010), layering their music with more electronic sounds. The band's fifth album, Living Things (2012), combined musical elements from all of their previous records. Their sixth album, The Hunting Party (2014), returned to a heavier rock sound, and their seventh album, One More Light (2017), was their first pop-oriented record. Linkin Park went on a hiatus when longtime lead vocalist Bennington died by suicide in July 2017. In April 2022, Shinoda revealed the band was neither working on new music nor planning on touring for the foreseeable future.Linkin Park is among the best-selling bands of the 21st century and the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 100 million records worldwide. They have won two Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, 10 MTV Europe Music Awards and three World Music Awards. In 2003, MTV2 named Linkin Park the sixth-greatest band of the music video era and the third-best of the new millennium. Billboard ranked Linkin Park No. 19 on the Best Artists of the Decade list. In 2012, the band was voted as the greatest artist of the 2000s in a Bracket Madness poll on VH1. In 2014, the band was declared as "The Biggest Rock Band in the World Right Now" by Kerrang!.
David Eric Grohl was born in Warren, Ohio on January 14, 1969. Mom is teacher Virginia Jean Hanlon and dad was news writer James Harper Grohl. In addition to being an award-winning journalist, Dave's dad had also served as the special assistant to Republican Congressman and US Senator Robert Taft Jr. When Dave was young, the Grohl family moved to Springfield, Virginia. When he was seven, his parents divorced, and he was raised primarily by his mom. At the age of 12, he began learning to play the guitar. He grew tired of lessons and instead taught himself, eventually playing in bands with friends. He said, "I was going in the direction of faster, louder, darker while my sister, Lisa, three years older, was getting seriously into new wave territory. We'd meet in the middle sometimes with Bowie and Siouxsie and the Banshees." At 13, Grohl and his sister spent the summer at their cousin Tracey's house in Illinois. Cousin Tracey introduced them to punk rock by taking the pair to shows by several different punk bands. His first concert was Naked Raygun at The Cubby Bear in Chicago in 1982. Grohl recalled, "From then on we were totally punk. We went home and bought Maximumrocknroll, (a punk subculture music zine that ran from 1982 to 2019) and tried to figure it all out." In Virginia, he attended Thomas Jefferson High School as a freshman and was shockingly elected class vice-president. He taught himself to play pieces of songs by punk bands like Circle Jerks and Bad Brains and, using his clout as vice president, would play them over the school intercom before his morning announcements. His mother decided he should transfer to Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria because he was smoking too much weed and it was affecting his grades. He stayed there for two years, one of those repeating his first year. After his second year, he transferred yet again to Annandale High School. While in high school, he played in several local bands, including a short stint as guitarist in a band called Freak Baby. It was during this period that he thought it was a good idea to switch to learning drums. When Freak Baby kicked out its bass player and reshuffled its lineup, Davel took on the role of drummer and history was made. Show's over, folks! The band then changed their name to “Mission Impossible.” Dave has said he did not take drumming lessons and instead learned by listening to Rush and punk rock bands. Obviously, insanely talented and possible robot and Rush drummer Neil Peart was an early influence: "When I got 2112 when I was eight years old, it fucking changed the direction of my life. I heard the drums. It made me want to become a drummer." During his beginning years as a drummer, Grohl cited John Bonham as his greatest influence, and eventually had Bonham's three-rings symbol tattooed on his right shoulder. Mission Impossible changed their name once again to “Fast” before breaking up, after which Dave joined the hardcore punk band Dain Bramage in December 1985. Dain Bramage ended in March 1987 when Dave up and quit without warning to join Scream, having produced the I Scream Not Coming Down LP. Many of Dave's early influences were at the 9:30 Club, a music venue in Washington, D.C. He said, "I went to the 9:30 Club hundreds of times. I was always so excited to get there, and I was always bummed when it closed. I spent my teenage years at the club and saw some shows that changed my life." As a teenager in D.C.,Dave briefly thought about joining shock-rocker punk/metal band, GWAR, who were looking for a drummer around this time. At age 17, Dave auditioned with local Washington, D.C. favorites Scream to fill the vacancy left by the departure of drummer Kent Stax. In order to be considered for the position, Dave lied about his age, saying he was 34. I'm kidding but he did say he was older. To Dave's surprise, the band asked him to join and so he pulled a Jay-Z (last week's Icon) and dropped out of high school in his junior year. He has been quoted as saying, "I was 17 and extremely anxious to see the world, so I did it." Over the next four years, Grohl toured extensively with Scream, recording a couple of live albums (their show of May 4, 1990 in Alzey, Germany being released by Tobby Holzinger as Your Choice Live Series Vol.10) and two studio albums, No More Censorship and Fumble, on which Grohl penned and sang vocals on the song "Gods Look Down". During a Toronto stop on their 1987 tour, Grohl played drums for Iggy Pop at a CD release party held at the El Mocambo, which became best known for the 1977 surprise show by The Rolling Stones, which became popular when then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau's wife, Margaret Trudeau, showed up and partied with the Stones.. In 1990, Scream unexpectedly disbanded mid-tour when bassist Skeeter Thompson left the band. Nirvana (1990–1994) We obviously can't talk about Foo Fighters without discussing Nirvana. They'll definitely have their own episode so we won't get too into them today. While playing in Scream, Grohl became a fan of the Melvins and eventually befriended them. During a 1990 tour stop on the West Coast, Melvins guitarist Buzz Osborne took his friends Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, of future Icons Nirvana, to go see Scream. Grohl called Osborne for advice after Scream disbanded and Osborne informed him that Nirvana was looking for a drummer. He gave Dave the phone numbers of Cobain and Novoselic, who then invited Grohl out to Seattle to audition. Grohl soon joined the band. Novoselic later said, "We knew in two minutes that he was the right drummer." Dave told the U.K. based magazine Q: "I remember being in the same room with them and thinking, 'What? That's Nirvana? Are you kidding?' Because on their record cover they looked like psycho lumberjacks... I was like, 'What, that little dude and that big motherfucker? You're kidding me'." When Dave joined Nirvana, they had already recorded several demos for the follow-up to their debut album Bleach, produced and recorded by Butch Vig. Initially, the plan was to release the album on Sub Pop, but they received a ton of label interest based on their demos. Dave spent the initial months with Nirvana traveling to various labels as the band shopped for a deal, eventually signing with DGC Records. In the spring of 1991, the band entered the infamous Sound City Studios in Los Angeles to record Nevermind as seen in Dave's amazing documentary, Sound City, from 2013. The album Nevermind was released later that year and exceeded all expectations becoming a worldwide commercial success. At the same time, Dave was compiling and recording his own material, which he released on a cassette called Pocketwatch in 1992 on indie label Simple Machines. Rather than using his own name for the project, Dave released the songs under his pseudonym "Late!" In the later years of Nirvana, Dave's songwriting increased. In his first months in Olympia, Washington, Kurt Cobain overheard him working on a song called "Color Pictures of a Marigold", and they wound up working on it together. Dave would later record the song for the Pocketwatch cassette. Dave stated in a 2014 episode of the documentary series, Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways, that Kurt kissed him when he first heard a demo of "Alone + Easy Target" that Dave had recently recorded. According to Dave, "I'd told him I was recording and he said, 'Oh, I wanna hear it, bring it by.' He was sitting in the bath-tub with a walkman on, listening to the song, and when the tape ended, he took the headphones off and kissed me and said, 'Oh, finally, now I don't have to be the only songwriter in the band!' I said, 'No, no, no, I think we're doing just fine with your songs.'" Nirvana would jam Dave's song on soundchecks during their 1991 European tour. Dave reluctantly held back his songs in the beginning. In a 1997 interview he said, "I was in awe of [Kurt Cobain's songs], and [I was] intimidated. I thought it was best that I kept my songs to myself." During the sessions for In Utero, Nirvana's third and final studio album, the band decided to re-record "Color Pictures of a Marigold" and released it as a B-side on the "Heart-Shaped Box" single, with a slight title change; "Marigold". Dave also wrote the main guitar riff for "Scentless Apprentice", another song on In Utero. In a 1993 MTV interview, Kurt had said that, at first, he thought the riff was "kind of boneheaded", but was happy with how the song developed. Part of this development process can be heard in a demo on the Nirvana box set ``With the Lights Out”, released in 2004. Cobain had said that he was excited at the possibility of having Chris Novoselic and Dave contribute more to the band's songwriting. Before embarking on their 1994 European tour, Nirvana scheduled session time at the popular Robert Lang Studios in Seattle to knock out some demos. The recording session was only 3 days long and Cobain wasn't there for most of it, so Chris and Dave worked on demos of their own songs. They completed several of Dave's songs, including future Foo Fighters songs "Exhausted", "Big Me", "February Stars", and "Butterflies". On the third day, Kurt finally arrived, and the band recorded a demo of a song later Titled "You Know You're Right". It was to be Nirvana's last studio recording. After the death of Kurt Cobain in 1994, the band known as Nirvana broke up. Dave received numerous offers to work with various artists and there were rumors saying he might join Pearl Jam. Dave almost accepted a position as the drummer for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He later said: "I was supposed to just join another band and be a drummer the rest of my life. I thought that I would rather do what no one expected me to do." Instead he booked time at Robert Lang Studios in October 1994 and began recording 15 of his own songs. Dave played every instrument and sang every vocal part on the record with the exception of one guitar part on "X-Static", which was played by Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whigs,. He completed an album's worth of material in only five days and handed out cassette copies of the sessions to his friends for feedback. Dave hoped to keep his anonymity and release the recordings in a limited run under the title "Foo Fighters", taken from the World War II term "foo fighter", used to refer to unidentified flying objects. "Around the time that I recorded the first FF tape, I was reading a lot of books on UFO's. Not only is it a fascinating subject, but there's a treasure trove of band names in those UFO books!" he said. "So, since I had recorded the first record by myself, playing all the instruments, but I wanted people to think that it was a group, I figured that FOO FIGHTERS might lead people to believe that it was more than just one guy. Silly, huh?" Continuing, Dave contends that a better band name could have been created. "Had I actually considered this to be a career, I probably would have called it something else, because it's the stupidest fucking band name in the world." The demo tape circulated the music industry, creating serious interest among record labels. This WAS the drummer from arguably the biggest rock band in the world, right? Dave put together a band to support the album. He talked to Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic about joining, but they both decided against it; Dave said it would have felt "really natural" for them to work together, but would have been "weird" for the others and place more pressure on himself. Having heard about Sunny Day Real Estate breaking up, Dave snagged the group's bass player, Nate Mendel, and their drummer, William Goldsmith. Dave then asked George Ruthenberg to join the band as their second guitarist. George, better known as Pat Smear, played as a touring guitarist for Nirvana after the release of In Utero. Pat was one of the founding members of the iconic punk band, The Germs, and Dave was a huge fan. Dave then licensed the album to Capitol Records, releasing it on his new record label, Roswell Records. Get it? Roswell. UFO's? The very first Foo Fighters show happened on February 19th, 1995. They played above a boat house in Seattle in front of friends and family. They made their official live, public debut on February 23rd, 1995 at a gig at the Jambalaya Club in Arcata California. They just happened to be in the area mixing their album when a local promoter asked the cover band, The Unseen, if Foo Fighters could open for them. They agreed. Dave and his band of Foo Fighters then embarked on their first US tour in April of 1995 in support of The Stooges and Porno For Pyros bass player Mike Watt's solo tour. This tour featured an additional new band called “Hovercraft”, an instrumental outfit featuring Pearl Jam singer, Eddie Vedder. Dave refused to play large venues or even do interviews to promote their debut album. The first single, “This Is A Call”, was released in June of 1995 and the album, “Foo Fighters”, was released in July containing the follow up singles “I'll Stick Around”, “For All the Cows”, and “Big Me”. Foo Fighters toured for almost an entire year and then jumped right back into the studio. This time it was Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, Washington with English producer Gil Norton who produced the Pixies, Jimmie Eat World, Counting Crows and so many more. Dave, of course, wrote the songs but the band had a hand in arrangements. Nearly finished, he took the rough mixes to LA to finish his vocal and guitar parts. As he was listening to the mixes, something just didn't sound right. It wasn't what he envisioned. The drums weren't perfect, not that they were bad. Dave was a drummer. He knew drums. He had a career based on playing the drums and could arguably be considered one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. So, he set up some drums, mic'd them up and re-recorded the drums for the album. All of them. Dave wanted Goldsmith to remain as their live drummer, but he was rightfully butthurt. Goldsmith quit. He quit what would become one of the biggest rock bands ever. Recently, drummer William Goldsmith has said “It was a pain in the ass. Like, that's the only band that I wish I could just, like, remove that from.” He continued by saying: “It doesn't matter what happened because the Foo Fighters are like Disney. Everyone wants to love Mickey Mouse. Everyone loves Mickey Mouse, so it's a difficult thing, but sometimes Mickey Mouse is a little rough around the edges. It's a no win scenario, so I'd rather remove it. I think the best thing to do is have a one on one conversation with Mickey.” He has gone to say that he has no ill will towards Dave. Shortly after this, Pat Smear decided to leave, as well, claiming he was exhausted and burnt out. Goldsmith and Smear were replaced by the late, great Taylor Hawkins and former Scream guitarist Franz Stahl, respectively, although Stahl was fired before the recording of the group's third album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose in 1999. Drummer Taylor Hawkins had played as Alanis Morissette's drummer from June of 1995 until March of 1997 in support of her “Jagged Little Pill” and “Can't Not” tours. I thought it would be cool to hear Taylor explain how he wound up being Foo Fighters drummer and Dave Grohl's best friend. This is all from interviews Taylor Hawkins and Dave Grohkl did with NME, Entertainment Weekly and Kerrang. “I'd met Dave at this [US radio station] K-Rock Christmas show because Foo Fighters were on their way up and Alanis Morrissette was through the f***ing stratosphere at that point,”. “Me and Dave just looked like long lost brothers in a weird way. “We had a similar vibe and I don't know why. I remember my friend playing with the Foo Fighters before I met Dave and watching them goof around backstage. He said to me, ‘That guy could be like your brother.' “And sure enough, when we met, we just thought, ‘We're brothers from another mother!' It was instantaneous – so much so that Alanis Morrisette just said ‘What are you going to do when Dave asks you to be the drummer in the Foo Fighters?'” “I was driving with my girlfriend at the time, and we were listening to KROQ,” “I heard William had departed and they were looking for a new drummer.” Tylor immediately called Dave. “I said, ‘I heard you guys are looking for a drummer,' and he said, ‘Well, do you know any?' I thought Alanis wanted to go in a more laid-back direction, and it seemed like the right time to jump. Alanis didn't need me! I basically said to Dave, ‘I'll play drums for you,' and we jammed a couple of times. “I remember I was at home watching Showgirls with my girlfriend, and Dave called to ask if I wanted to join.” Initially, Dave never thought Taylor would leave Morissette and Taylor's allegiance was always with Alanis; that's why he asked Taylor if he knew of any good drummers. When Hawkins agreed to join, all Dave cared about was that he was getting a friend, not a great drummer. Dave told Entertainment Weekly, “I sent Taylor a tape of one of the new songs. It was ‘Monkey Wrench.' I went over to his little house in Topanga Canyon, he sat down and played for three seconds, and the first time he hit a snare drum, I knew it.” Dave knew Taylor was the guy. “I swear to God, I was like, ‘That's all I need to f***ing hear. I love you as a person. You've just given me hearing damage for the rest of my life in three seconds. You have to be in the band.” Later, Grohl said Hawkins came into his life like an F5 tornado. “When he joined the band, his drumming was the least important factor – I just thought I want to travel the world with this guy, I want to jump on stage and drink beers with this person. That was my biggest concern,”. Morissette didn't take Hawkins leaving personally. They remained friends over the years. Taylor has said he would have been delivering pizzas if it wasn't for her. She was the first person who gave him a break in the music world. “She gave me a lot of space to do what I wanted. It was probably the biggest album of the year (referencing her debut album “Jagged Little Pill”), and there was a lot of pressure on her. She was having to learn to be this leader on the job, which isn't easy. But it was really one of the most fun times of my life.” The band announced Tylor would be its new drummer on March 18, 1997. His first appearance with the Foo Fighters was in the music video for the 1997 single "Monkey Wrench", although the song was recorded before he joined the band. Foo Fighter's second album, “The Colour and the Shape” was released on May 20th, 1997 through Capitol and Roswell Records with the legendary singles, “Monkey Wrench”, “Everlong” and “My Hero” blasting through the airwaves. The album charted at number ten on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for a Grammy in 1998 for best rock album. It has sold more than 2 million copies. The band then traveled to Dave's home state of Virginia in 1998 to record their third album, “There Is Nothing Left To Lose”. Dave and Pat Smear's replacement, Franz Stahl, just couldn't see eye to eye as songwriters. Dave said "in those few weeks it just seemed like the three of us were moving in one direction and Franz wasn't." Franz was Dave's childhood friend and the decision to fire him from the band was a hard one. Then, shortly after Franz's termination, bassist Nate Mendel called Dave and said he was quitting to rejoin Sunny Day Real Estate, but the next day changed his mind and decided not to leave. Dave, Taylor and Nate spent the next several months recording their third album at Dave's home studio. “There Is Nothing Left To Lose” spawned mega hits like “Learn To Fly”, “Stacked Actors”, “Generator” and “Break Out”. “Learn To Fly” was the band's first single to chart on the US Billboard Hot 100. Right before the album was released, the president of Capitol Records (Foo Fighters record label), Gary Gersh was forced out and with the help of a “key man clause” in their contract, they were allowed to leave Capitol upon Gersh's release. They left Capitol to sign with RCA who then bought the rights to their previous albums from Capitol. Upon completing the recording of their third album, the band started auditioning guitarists. Foo Fighters selected No Use For A Name and, what I didn't know, Me First and The Gimmie Gimmies guitarist, Chris Shiflett. He was only supposed to come into the fold as the band's touring guitarist, but was hired on full time before they recorded “One By One”, their fourth studio album. Right around 2001, Dave and Taylor, being diehard fans of the band Queen, established a relationship with the future Icons and Outlaws episode subjects. Dave and Taylor had the distinct pleasure of inducting them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that same year and joined them to perform the 1976 classic, Tie Your Mother Down, with Taylor playing drums alongside Roger Taylor. Queen's legendary guitarist Brian May even added a guitar track to Foo Fighters' second cover of Pink Floyd's "Have a Cigar", which was on the soundtrack to Mission: Impossible 2. In 2002, guitarist Brian May contributed guitar work to Tired of You and an outtake called Knucklehead. The bands have performed together on several occasions since, including VH1 Rock Honors and Foo Fighters' headlining gig at Hyde Park in London, England. At the end of 2001, the boys got together to record their fourth studio record, “One By One. They spent four months in a LA studio and something was off. The spark just wasn't there and the band were having issues, internally. So, Dave stepped away for a while and worked with Queens of the Stone Age, helping them complete their 2002 record, “Songs for the Deaf”. Touring commenced for Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age, but the internal struggles were still there and just as they were about to call it quits, they hit the stage at Coachella. Dave and Taylor wanted to complete the album and the next day, they rocked the festival and agreed to do so. Almost every part of the album was scrapped and re-recorded at Dave's studio in Virginia, in only ten days. Seven songs from the original recording of One By One eventually leaked, but the full album has never been released. That record has often been referred to as “Million Dollar Demos”. The band finally released its fourth album, One by One, in 2002. This record had hit singles like “All My Life”, “Have It All”, “Low” and “Times Like These”. This was Chris Shiflett's first recorded appearance as part of the band and where Taylor played all of the drums. “One By One” topped the charts globally and sold a million units in the U.S., bringing home a Grammy for Best Rock Album in 2004. Supporting One By One by touring for a year and half, Dave wasn't in a hurry to record another Foo Fighters album. He was more interested in doing an acoustic, solo record but it turned into a full band ordeal. They built a new studio in Northridge, Los Angeles, called Studio 606 West and began recording their 5th album, In Your Honor, a two disc set with full blown rock songs on one and the other with acoustic tracks. It was released in 2005 and had the hits, “DOA”, “Resolve” and one of my all time favorites, “Best of You”. The album also had guest performances by Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, Queen of the Stone Age's Josh Homme and Norah Jones. It also featured their new keyboardist, Rami Jaffee of the Wallflowers, who wouldn't become a full-time member until 2017. “In Your Honor” was nominated for five Grammy Awards, hit the number one spot in five countries and number two in the U.S., selling more than a million copies. Foo Fighters released their first live CD, “Skin and Bones” in November of 2006, with 15 songs recorded at a 3 night performance at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles. The album featured a violinist, Pat Smear joining in and a three song encore with Dave playing “Best of You”, “Everlong”, and “Friend of a Friend”. The record debuted at number 21 on the Billboard 200, sold 49,000 copies in its first week and over 357,000 total. Foo Fighters released its sixth album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, in 2007 and recruited producer Gil Norton, who worked on the band's “The Colour and the Shape”. This was primarily because Dave felt the songs were different from the band's previous input and "had the potential to be something great". So, he considered that instead of doing something like the last three albums, the band had to go out of "our own comfort zone" and "needed someone to push us out of there". Preparing to record this album was extensive: first Dave started off developing demos with Taylor, but for the first time he tried to input vocals and lyrics early in the writing phase. After finalizing the song's composition with guitarist Chris and bassist Nate, Dave spent two weeks with Gil Norton discussing "arrangements, harmony and melody" and condensing the song ideas. They then spent four weeks rehearsing, and playing "a song a day, from noon to midnight". Taylor stated that "we basically played each of these songs 100 different times, trying every little thing every different way" and that it was the first time since The Colour and the Shape ``that Dave had to deal with someone in the room questioning all his ideas". Dave claimed the choices were for the "most powerful, dramatic songs" and that there was an effort to "make everything sound as natural as possible – just like on the albums we grew up listening to". On this album's sound, Taylor Hawkins said: "We haven't been ready to write a record like this until now. I know that Dave wouldn't have been comfortable putting violins on a song before. But for whatever reasons, it just felt like the right time to explore those things now. The last record, obviously, was half heavy stuff, half acoustic songs. So it really was like two sides of the coin. It sounds obvious, but this time around we weren't afraid of incorporating everything into one song if it felt right." The first single, “The Pretender”, topped Billboard's modern rock chart for 19 weeks. Other singles from this album were “Long Road to Ruin”, “Let It Die” and “Cheer Up Boys”. It was nominated for five Grammys, winning Best Rock Album and Best Hard Rock Performance and won the Brit Award, (Britain's version of the American Recording Academy) for Best International Album. Foo Fighters hit the road again in 2007 on a world tour and at the European MTV Music Awards, Pat Smear was confirmed as a returned member of the band. June 7th, 2008 saw Foo Fighters headline the world renowned Wembley Stadium in London, England. Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin joined them on stage and after rocking out the songs “Rock and Roll” and “Ramble On”, Dave excitedly shouted “Welcome to the greatest fucking day of my whole entire life!” The attendance at this amazing sold out concert was 85,000. In August 2010, the band began recording their seventh studio album with the return of producer Butch Vig. The album was recorded in Dave's garage using only analog equipment. The album won five Grammys and was nominated for six. Planning the seventh album, Dave realized he was bored of the band's typical recording process. Even though the group own 606 Studios, he is still a punk rocker at heart, and found himself yearning for a grittier, wholly analogue approach to recording. One night in his hotel room in Melbourne, while on tour with Them Crooked Vultures (his side project with Josh Homme and John Paul Jones), he hatched a plan to return to recording basics for what was to become Wasting Light. Dave told Sound on Sound.com, "I thought, rather than just record the album in the most expensive studio with the most state‑of‑the‑art equipment, what if Butch and I were to get back together after 20 years and dust off the tape machines and put them in my garage? We've recorded an album somewhere where no‑one has ever recorded before. We've not gone to the studio where Zeppelin made In Through The Out Door, we've gone into my garage. The only person that's recorded in my garage before is me for shitty demos that I've done for the last two records.” The first single from Wasting Light, "Rope", was released to radio in February 2011. On April 16, 2011, Foo Fighters released an album of covers, Medium Rare, as a limited-edition vinyl for Record Store Day. Wasting Light debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming the band's first album to do so. Other singles for the album were "Walk", "Arlandria", "These Days", and "Bridge Burning". Alongside Wasting Light's release, the band released a rockumentary, directed by Academy Award-winner James Moll. The film, titled Back and Forth, chronicles the band's career. Current and past members, and producer Butch Vig, tell the story of the band through interviews. After debuting on March 15, 2011, at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, it was released on DVD three months later. The first batch of ‘Wasting Light' CDs include pieces of the album's analog tape master Look inside your CD copy of the band's Wasting Light album. If you were one of the first fans to pick one up, chances are it includes a piece of the original analog tape the album was recorded on. After announcing a break after touring in support of Wasting Light, Dave said in 2013 that they were starting to write new material for their 8th studio album, “Sonic Highways”, bringing back Butch Vig. They announced their return to the stage by posting a video of Erik Estrada, one of the main actors from the 70's motorcycle cop show, CHIPS, riding a motorcycle and delivering each member of the band an invitation to play in Mexico. They announced that their eighth album would be released in November of 2014 and they would commemorate it and their 20th anniversary with an HBO TV series called “Sonic Highways”, directed by Dave, himself. Eight songs were written and recorded in eight studios in eight different American cities with video capturing the history and feel of each town. Each track features contributions from one or more musicians with ties to that city's musical history. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, with sales of 190,000 copies in the United States. It has sold over 617,500 copies in the US and had amazing songs like “Something From Nothing”, “The Feast and the Famine”, and “Congregation” featuring country artist, Zac Brown Foo Fighters were the last musical performance on Late Show with David Letterman on May 20th, 2015, as he retired from his 33 year career as a late night show host. On June 12th, 2015, Dave had the misfortune of falling off the stage in Gothenburg, Sweden and breaking his leg during the second song. The band kept playing while Dave was fixed up by the medical staff and then RETURNED TO THE STAGE to finish the last two hours of their set while sitting in a chair and a medic taking care of his leg. He was flown to London, England after the show and received six metal pins to stabilize the fracture in his leg. There was speculation that Foo Fighters would drop out of their 20th anniversary, fourth of July bash, after canceling their remaining European dates following Dave's accident. Instead, The band performed for 48,000 people with Dave in a custom-built moving throne which he claimed to have designed himself while on painkillers. They renamed the following tour the “Broken Leg Tour”. November 25th, 2015 Foo Fighters released a surprise EP named “Saint Cecilia”, available for digital download, and Dave announced an indefinite hiatus. This EP peaked at number 3 on Billboard's mainstream rock songs chart. Krist Novoselic, who played with Grohl in Nirvana, described Saint Cecilia as Foo Fighters' "statement on how they are the biggest rock band in the world". Novoselic also said that "Saint Cecilia is more straight-ahead rock that is done really well", and went on to say that "I went to the Foo's last gig at the Moda Center in Portland and they rocked a packed house. I love the drummer Matt Sorum (Guns and Roses). However, he is so wrong in his statement about danger and the Foo's somehow lacking it. First off all, I know about danger in rock. I was the bassist in Flipper — and survived! Look at a band like Queen, who totally rocked. They were way more dandy than danger. Queen knows how to rock a stadium. So do the Foo Fighters and you'll hear big rock on Saint Cecilia". Rumors about Foo Fighters breaking up were everywhere so, the band released a mockumentary video in March 2016 portraying Grohl leaving the band to pursue an electronic music career and Nick Lachey (formerly of 98 Degrees) becoming the group's new singer, ending with: "For the millionth time, we're not breaking up. And nobody's going fucking solo!" Dave announced that the band would spend most of 2017 recording their ninth studio album, “Concrete and Gold”. On June 1, 2017, their new single "Run" was released. Run topped the US Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart the following month. On June 20, 2017, the band announced that their new album, Concrete and Gold, would be released in September. On August 23, 2017, The Sky Is a Neighborhood was released as the second single and topped the Mainstream Rock chart. The Line was released in promotion of the album and later as the third single in 2018. Concrete and Gold was officially released on September 15, 2017, produced by Greg Kurstin. Concrete and Gold also features Justin Timberlake on vocals for Make It Right, Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Menon backing vocals for the song Concrete and Gold, and Paul McCartney on the drums for Sunday Rain. Concrete and Gold has sold over 262,000 units. In October 2019, the band announced that they were recording their tenth studio album based on Dave's demos. In November 2019, the band began releasing a series of EPs under the umbrella name of the Foo Files, largely consisting of previously released B sides and live performances. By February 2020, Dave announced that the new album was complete but by May, it was delayed indefinitely because of a little unforeseen event called the COVID-19 pandemic, saying, "We've kind of shelved it for now to figure out exactly when it's going to happen." Starting in November 2020, promotion for the album ramped up. Its title, Medicine at Midnight, and release date, February 5, 2021, were announced. The band released three singles ahead of the album: "Shame Shame", "No Son of Mine", and "Waiting on a War". On February 10, 2021, Foo Fighters were announced as one of the 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees in their first year of eligibility as their debut album had been released 25 years prior. On May 12, 2021, Foo Fighters were announced as one of 6 performer inductees. For Record Store Day on July 17, 2021, the Foo Fighters released an album of disco covers, Hail Satin, under the name Dee Gees. The album contains four Bee Gees covers, a cover of Andy Gibb's "Shadow Dancing", plus five live versions of Medicine at Midnight tracks.] On February 25, 2022, the band released a comedy horror film, Studio 666, directed by BJ McDonnell. It stars the band members as themselves, alongside Will Forte, Whitney Cummings, Jeff Garlin, and Jenna Ortega. In the movie, the band attempts to record an album in a haunted mansion; Dave is possessed by a demonic spirit and the other members are killed off one by one. It was filmed in the same mansion in which the band had recorded their most recent album, Medicine at Midnight. Studio 666 is currently available on Amazon Prime Video. Dave has recently released an EP of songs from the film, Dream Widow, on March 25, 2022. On March 25, 2022, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins died in his room at the Casa Medina hotel in Bogotá, Colombia. No cause of death was given. Taylor had suffered chest pain, and had ten substances in his system at the time of his death, including opioids, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and THC. Foo Fighters were scheduled to perform that night at the Estéreo Picnic Festival as part of their ongoing South American tour; the festival stage was turned into a candlelight vigil for Taylor. A few days later, the band canceled all remaining tour dates. According to Sony Music Japan, FOO FIGHTERS sold over 32,000,000 albums worldwide, including 9,065,000 in the United States and 5,260,000 in the United Kingdom. The best-selling album by FOO FIGHTERS is GREATEST HITS, which sold over 2,775,000 copies .
Musical acts currently filling arenas fall into a few categories: pop, electronic, country, and legacy. The notion of modern or contemporary rock bands packing enormo-domes feels like a fossil, but don't tell that to platinum-selling Shinedown, who's been packing thousands-of-seats houses for years. The group was founded by vocalist Brent Smith in 2001, after his previous band, Dreve, disbanded). He enlisted Jasin Todd (guitarist), Brad Stewart (bass), and Barry Kerch (drums). Zach Myers joined the fold in 2005 (as a touring member). He and current bassist Eric Bass (no joke) first earned album credits with 2008's smash The Sound of Madness. (Rig Rundown alumnus https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-nick-perri (Nick Perri) was a short-time member of Shinedown and earned lead guitar credits on TSOM before fully handing over the 6-string reins to Myers.) The quartet's ability to fuse post-grunge pyrotechnics, four-on-the-floor rockers, and glossy, arms-in-the-air anthems, and their dynamic acoustic performances, have earned them 17 No. 1 hits on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. (If you include the other Billboard charts, they've got three more.) They also have three platinum albums (three more are certified gold in the U.S.), and six additional platinum singles. If guitar truly is in a slump in pop culture and the mainstream, somebody forgot to tell Shinedown. When PG's Chris Kies first talked tone tools with Myers and Bass in https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/shinedown (2013), they had some gear, and even some cool signature stuff. But this time, the war chest was on another level. Before their May 4 headline show at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena, supporting their new, seventh album, Planet Zero, the duo flexed their rockstar credentials and carted out 40-plus instruments. Myers contends he uses every one of his guitars on a nightly basis. And Bass details his signature line of Prestige basses, which incorporate an ingenious thumb rest. Myers also shows off an irreplaceable PRS created by the late American fashion designer and entrepreneur Virgil Abloh (Off-White), and he explains how a custom-painted https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/prs-silver-sky-john-mayer-review (Silver Sky) earned him some serious eye rolls and scoffs. His career began in earnest when a young John Elefante auditioned as the new lead singer and keyboardist for Kansas, in 1981. That year, the band was one of the top-grossing concert acts in the world and Elefante had never been in a band apart from his family. Although several of the top vocalists of the day applied for the job (e.g. Sammy Hagar, Doug Pinnick, Jim Stafford), Elefante received the part.Elefante sang the lead vocals and performed keyboards on two Kansas albums. He was also a major songwriting contributor (along with lead guitarist/keyboardist/songwriter Kerry Livgren). On 1982's Vinyl Confessions, he co-wrote and sang the No. 4 Billboard Mainstream Rock hit, "Play the Game Tonight". He also wrote the acoustic-based classic "Chasing Shadows", along with the Top 40 single, "Right Away". The next year, on the following album, Drastic Measures, he wrote the early MTV favorite, "Fight Fire with Fire", which remains the band's highest charting single at No. 3 (Mainstream Rock) as well as a staple of Kansas' live shows to this day. Elefante was also responsible for "Everybody's My Friend," which was released as the second single from the album and reached No. 34 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.Around this time the band began to buckle under the increasing strain of maintaining the consistent radio hits and record company commercial expectations. In addition, contemporary pop music was quickly becoming antithetical to the band's organic, sophisticated aesthetic. A new age of sequenced synthesizers and drum machines confronted Kansas with the near-impossible challenge of maintaining their musical essence and commercial integrity. In 1984, on the retrospective collection The Best of Kansas, Elefante wrote the album's one new track, "Perfect Lover". That same year Elefante, Kerry Livgren, and Dave Hope left Kansas. In 1985, "Young and Innocent" appeared on the soundtrack to St. Elmo's Fire and was credited to "Elefante" as a collaborative effort by brothers John and Dino Elefante.1985–1989Elefante discovered another calling while still with Kansas—record producer. In 1984, he produced Perfect Timing for ground-breaking Southern California group, Sweet Comfort Band. While not a major commercial success, Petra's Back to the Street was a Grammy-nominated, breakthrough, commercial success for both Elefante and the band. He also contributed songwriting, keyboards, background vocals and engineering to the effort. With both John and Dino Elefante as the band's primary producers, Petra's already popular Christian pop/rock niche was given a timely boost. Their accolades include multiple gold albums, 10 consecutive CCM Magazine Reader's Choice Awards, induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Hard Rock Cafe, and the only artist to ever have four albums in the SoundScan top-100 Christian chart. In 1987 while producing a various artists album called California Metal, the album's production team of John and Dino Elefante ended up one track short and they decided to add a song written for Kansas called "Wasn't It Love" (originally entitled "What About Love") under the name Mastedon. Regency later requested a full-length album which became Mastedon's debut, It's a Jungle Out There.Closing out the decade, Elefante had produced five major label albums, and performed on 12. Over the next five years, Elefante worked at an almost frenetic pace as one of the most in-demand producers in Nashville. In addition to Petra's further releases, he worked as the producer on 30 other albums. He usually performed on the releases as well, often sharing songwriting credits, as well. Elefante was committed to his role as producer, eschewing other opportunities such as an offer to replace Bobby Kimball as lead singer for Grammy winners, Toto.
SUMMARY:Our guest is Jerry Cantrell, the founder, lead guitarist, co-lead vocalist, and primary songwriter of Alice in Chains. The nine-time Grammy nominee has written more than 20 Top 10 hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, and was named one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” by Guitar World magazine. His latest solo release is the critically-acclaimed Brighten. PART ONE:Paul and Scott chat about their high school years, the Seattle explosion, Chuck Klosterman's new book, and why certain bands from the much-hyped grunge movement evolved and survived when others burned out. PART TWO:Our in-depth interview with Jerry CantrellABOUT JERRY CANTRELL:Nine-time Grammy nominee Jerry Cantrell is best known as the founder, lead guitarist, co-lead vocalist, and primary songwriter of the hard rock band Alice in Chains. Signing with Columbia Records in 1989, the Seattle-based band got lumped into the grunge explosion of the early 1990s when Cantrell-penned classics such as “Man in the Box,” ”Would?,” “Rooster,” and “Down in a Hole,” took over MTV and Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. But Alice in Chains was always about more than Seattle hysteria. By the middle of the decade they'd released three multiplatinum selling studio albums—Facelift, Dirt, and the self-titled Alice in Chains—as well as three EPs, including Jar of Flies, which went triple platinum and became the first EP in history to top the Billboard 200. A string of Top 10 singles, including “No Excuses,” “I Stay Away,” “Grind,” “Heaven Beside You,” and “Again” established the band as rock radio mainstays. Plagued by struggles with addiction, Alice in Chains took a hiatus from live performances before regrouping in the spring of 1996 for an appearance on MTV Unplugged. The subsequent album hit the Top 5 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum. That same year the band found themselves on another extended hiatus, leading to the release of Cantrell's debut solo album, Boggy Depot, in 1998. The death of Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley in 2002 could have meant the end of the band, but they eventually regrouped and released the Gold-selling Black Gives Way to Blue in 2009, and the follow-up album, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here. Both releases hit the Top 5. Alice in Chains has continued to release new music as recently as 2018's Rainier Fog album, and the band has now sold more than 30 million records worldwide. In addition to his first solo release, Cantrell put out the album Degradation Trip Volumes 1 & 2 in 2002. His most recent release, the critically-acclaimed Brighten, is his first solo record in almost two decades. Named among Guitar World magazine's “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” Jerry is also a formidable songwriter. More than 20 of his compositions, both with Alice in Chains and as a solo artist, have hit the Top 10 on the Billboard rock chart.

Casio talks to Collective Soul bassist Will Turpin about getting back out on tour, what music means to him. Their desire to continue to create new music over 25 years into this... Collective Soul is an American rock band originally from Stockbridge, Georgia. Now based in Atlanta, the group consists of lead vocalist Ed Roland, rhythm guitarist Dean Roland, bassist Will Turpin, drummer Johnny Rabb, and lead guitarist Jesse Triplett. Formed in 1992, Collective Soul released their Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid album on the independent label Rising Storm Records in 1993. The band went from obscurity to popularity that year after the song "Shine" became an underground hit based on radio play. The album was re-released in 1994 under major label Atlantic Records. Collective Soul released a self-titled album in March 1995. Considered by Ed Roland to be the band's true debut album, Collective Soul spent 76 weeks on the Billboard 200 charts and went triple-platinum, becoming the band's highest-selling album. The singles "December", "The World I Know", and "Where the River Flows" each reached No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock charts. About two years later, Collective Soul released Disciplined Breakdown. Although not as successful in sales as their previous two albums, Disciplined Breakdown contained two No. 1 Mainstream Rock chart hits with "Precious Declaration" and "Listen". The band released a fourth studio album, Dosage, in 1999. The album's first single, "Heavy", spent a then record-breaking 15 weeks on the top spot of the Mainstream Rock charts. The band released Blender in 2000, their fifth and final album with the original starting lineup, as lead guitarist Ross Childress left the band in 2001. About two weeks after Childress' departure, Collective Soul released Seven Year Itch, a compilation of their greatest hits between 1994 and 2001. Collective Soul established their own label, El Music Group, prior to releasing Youth in 2004. The band recorded a live album with the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra in 2005, titled Home, and released it in 2006. Original drummer Shane Evans departed from the band at the end of 2005. Collective Soul has since released four more albums: Afterwords (2007), a second self-titled album (2009), See What You Started by Continuing (2015), and Blood (2019).

NOTHING MORE Daniel Oliver Life Changing Metal Interview. We spoke about the fact that the band spent 10 years as independant... This interview was recorded backstage of Paris Download Festival in 2018 ▬ About Nothing More ▬ Nothing More is an American rock band from San Antonio, Texas. Formed in 2003, the band spent much of the 2000s recording independent albums and struggling to maintain a steady lineup or attract record label interest. Towards the end of the decade, the band's long-time drummer, Jonny Hawkins, decided to switch to being the band's frontman and lead vocalist, stabilizing the band's core lineup along with other long-time members Mark Vollelunga (guitar) and Daniel Oliver (bass). The band self-funded and recorded their fourth studio album, Nothing More, over the course of three years and used it to gain the attention of Eleven Seven Music record label, who signed the band to a five album record contract upon hearing it. The album became the band's breakthrough release in 2014, with multiple charting singles, including "This is the Time (Ballast)", which hit number 1 on the Mediabase Active Rock chart and number 2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, and "Mr. MTV", "Jenny", and "Here's to the Heartache" all charting in the top 15 of both charts. The band began working on a follow-up in 2016 while continuing to tour in support of their self-titled release, and in September 2017, released their fifth studio album - their second on a major record label - The Stories We Tell Ourselves. The lead single, "Go to War", outperformed the prior singles, topping the Mainstream Rock chart, and the release earned the band three Grammy Award nominations; Best Rock Album for the album, and Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance for "Go to War". The band continued to promote the release moving into 2018, releasing singles, "Do You Really Want It?" and "Just Say When", and embarking on multiple North American tours into 2019. ▬About ZanZanA ▬ ZanZanA is the official YouTube channel of the show METAL, hosted by Karim BENAMOR. We had the pleasure of interviewing Gavin Rossdale of Bush over Zoom video! “Nothing is better than doing what you love,” says Gavin Rossdale, and the Bush frontman knows from experience. For near three decades, the musician has been a perennial presence in the annals of rock music — an intellectual and emotional, albeit occasionally misunderstood creative, forever with a hard-charging rock n’ roll heart. Now, with The Kingdom, Rossdale and his band enter a new phase of life, and the singer comes armed not only with a ferocious new album, but also a sense that he’s on his life’s correct course. Music has always been a release for Rossdale, and now as he reflects on a career that’s seen Bush sell close to 20 million records in the U.S. and Canada alone — as well as compiling an amazing string of 23 consecutive Top 40 hit singles on the Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts, six of which shot to No. 1 — he says that passion remains the same. That’s exactly what Rossdale is doing on The Kingdom. The album features some of the most potent songwriting of Rossdale’s career, highlighted by the pummeling “Flowers on a Grave,” as well as the noise hurricane “We Are Quicksand” which finds him showcasing a vulnerability like rarely before. In many ways, with Bush’s new album, Rossdale is creating the type of music – and the world – he hopes to see. As he explains, The Kingdom is a utopic ideal – a reaction to a world full of “judgement and self-righteousness and mob mentality and where everyone knows better than everyone else.” “The Kingdom was this place that I imagined where likeminded people could go and be free and artists and musicians and painters and people could think for themselves and don’t hold any judgement over anyone else,” Rossdale offers. Rossdale has been around the music business long enough to know it’s about steady growth and sustained creativity. Many years back, not long after the band came roaring out the gate with towering back-to-back smash albums, 1994’s epic six-times platinum debut, Sixteen Stone and 1996’s triple-platinum Razorblade Suitcase, “I took away all the expectation and pressure from my career,” Rossdale explains. To him, ever since, it’s never been about “fitting a sound or fitting a moment. I just don’t feel any of that. Maybe in the past,” he concedes. “But I feel like we’ve always had to work for what we have. We don’t take anything for granted. We’ve never had any kind of particular free ride. That’s a healthy thing.” With The Kingdom on the horizon, yet another chapter in a multi-decade career is set to unfold. And Rossdale is feeling undeniably gratified. “I have an incredible life and I have scaled huge walls of music and done so many amazing things,” he notes proudly. The best part for Rossdale? “I’m still right in the middle of it.” The Kingdom is available now! We want to hear from you! This week on The Hardcore Humanism Podcast we are talking with Marc Labelle, vocalist of the hard rock band Dirty Honey. In 2019, Dirty Honey became the first unsigned band ever to be #1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart with their song “When I’m Gone.” In our discussion, Labelle talks very specifically about his purpose and what has guided a lot of his decision making, which is a passion for music. There is mounting evidence that people who have a strong sense of purpose experience improved physical and emotional health. A strong sense of purpose can also be the key to self-actualization – or the complete realization of one’s potential -- a concept that humanistic theorists such as Albert Maslow feel represent the essence of thriving as a human being. Thus, understanding how we can discover and nurture a strong sense of purpose may be an important pathway towards optimal health and well-being.Labelle shares the story of how he went to California with no job, no home, and no band to pursue his passion for music. And for a long period of time, he lived in his car or on friends’ porches to get by. During this time, he was able to build a schedule that reflected his needs not just to survive but also to pursue his music career, including songwriting, band practice and playing shows. What makes Labelle’s and Dirty Honey’s accomplishments thus far even more impressive is that they are doing everything without a record label, which means that he and his band are engaged in a great deal of the business of the band that is often handled by a record label. They are an independent band that is building from the ground up – and having great success so far.And all the while, what guides Labelle’s decisions – including who he wants in his band and as supportive people around him -- is a passion for music. That is the glue for him. He needs to be in a band with and surrounded by people who support that passion he feels and his purpose in music. And when we have that purpose – that commitment to something that feels bigger than ourselves – it can help us overcome adversity whether living in our car or trying to become rock stars as an independent band.*****Newsletter: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/GBmf0iU/HardcoreHumanismSignUpInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hardcorehumanism/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HardcoreHumanism/Twitter: https://twitter.com/hardcorhumanismLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/hardcore-humanism

Plus, David schools Jeremy. PRESS RELEASE -- WHITESNAKE’S THE BLUES ALBUM The 14 Song Collection Completes The Red, White And Blues Trilogy With Remixed And Remastered Versions Of The Band’s Best Blues-Rock Tracks Whitesnake celebrates the blues sound that helped inspire its multi-platinum career on a new collection that features remixed and remastered versions of the group’s best blues-rock songs. THE BLUES ALBUM is the third and final release in the band’s Red, White and Blues Trilogy, a series of compilations organized by musical themes that began this year with Love Songs (red) and The Rock Album (white). Like The Rock Album and Love Songs, all the tracks on THE BLUES ALBUM have been revisited, remixed, and remastered. Whitesnake’s singer-songwriter David Coverdale says, the music reflects how blues artists like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and the three Kings (Albert, B.B. and Freddie) continue to inspire him. In the album’s liner notes, he writes: “It’s hard to find the words to show how profoundly they connected with my soul. But ‘blues’ to me is a beautiful word that describes emotional expression… feelings, be it feelings of sadness, loneliness, emptiness… but, also those that express great joy, celebration and dance, sexiness and Love!!!” The new compilation delivers a potent mix of hits and deep tracks that originally appeared between 1984 and 2011 on six Whitesnake studio albums and Coverdale’s solo album, Into the Light. THE BLUES ALBUM showcases two of the band’s biggest songs: “Slow An’ Easy,” a Top 20 Mainstream Rock hit in 1984 from Whitesnake’s double-platinum album Slide It In, and the smash “Give Me All Your Love” from the band’s 1987 self-titled album, which was certified 8x platinum. Other choice tracks from Whitesnake are also featured: “Looking For Love” and “Crying In The Rain,” and “Steal Your Heart Away,” which is available now. Restless Heart (1997), Good to Be Bad (2008), and Forevermore (2011) are all represented on THE BLUES ALBUM by multiple tracks (“Too Many Tears,” “A Fool In Love” and “Steal Your Heart Away”). The collection also includes “If You Want Me,” a studio recording released in 2006 as a bonus track on the live album, Live…in the Shadows of the Blues. Coverdale also taps his 2000 solo album, Into the Light, for “River Song.” THE BLUES ALBUM CD Track Listing: 1. “Steal Your Heart Away” 2. “Good To Be Bad” 3. “Give Me All Your Love” 4. “Take Me Back Again” 5. “Slow An’ Easy” 6. “Too Many Tears” 7. “Lay Down Your Love” 8. “The River Song” 9. “Whipping Boy Blues” 10. “If You Want Me” 11. “A Fool In Love” 12. “Woman Trouble Blues” 13. “Looking For Love” 14. “Crying In The Rain” Help support the show.

As Daylight Dies, «The Arms of Sorrow».
Back after a 2-week break and into "The World I Know" , I will be discussing the albums of Collective Soul. The Atlanta, GA based rock band has been at it for almost 20 years. Founded by the sons of a Baptist minister, Collective Soul has 10 albums, 7 #1 Mainstream Rock hits, sold 24 million albums worldwide, and even got into trouble with Billy Corgan and Metallica (Yes, I'm serious about that last one). They continue to "Shine" this very day. Sometime in 2021, Collective Soul will be releasing their 11th album "Vibrating" (which was supposed to be part of a double album along with 2019's "Blood". BUT, until (or if) it gets released, I will count down from worst to best the current discography of Ed Roland and company. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/randumb-albumb/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/randumb-albumb/support

Our weirdest chart yet... Grunge, hair metal, thrash, blues rock, jam bands, prog-metal, and Sting?
Hailing from Los Angeles, the band Dirty Honey, of singer Marc Labelle, guitarist John Notto, bassist Justin Smolian, and drummer Corey Coverstone, is ground breaking. Their self-titled EP was self-released (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-released) in March 2019. The single "When I'm Gone" topped the Billboard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_(magazine)) Mainstream Rock Songs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mainstream_Rock_(chart)) chart, making them the first unsigned band to ever top the chart. I talked to Marc, John and Justin - preshow in Huntsville, AL at Sidetracks Music Hall.
You should be forewarned that this episode takes a brief detour into subject matter that's a little bit on the touchy side. Specifically, there's a mention of a musician's gender identity and how it's affected their relationship with their fans and the media. I hope that's not a problem for ye. Anyway, you're getting two episodes this week, to make up for the lapse I did two weeks ago. So either this is the bonus episode because it's Monday, or yesterday was the bonus episode and this one is a day late. How you choose to view that, I care not. Anyway, are we good now? But the members of Nirvana had a tough time dealing with their quick rise to fame in 1990 and 91. They discovered that a lot of their new fans would be bopping about and singing along with their songs without having a lot of idea what the songs meant. There's an old Steve Martin routine where he's playing the banjo onstage, and he comments that “The banjo is such a happy instrument–you can’t play a sad song on the banjo – it always comes out so cheerful.” He even makes an attempt at it: "Oh death, and grief, and sorrow, and murderrrrr..." and that's pretty much what Nirvana was going through, but in the other direction. Their songs had the benefit of being very catchy, even if the subject matter was kind of dark and alienated, so people were latching on to the hooks ('scuse the pun, there) in the songs and not really thinking about the lyrics, or the emotions evoked. This provided a weird disconnect for them, and Cobain finally took that emotion and put it into song form. Which didn't really help, of course, because now they're singing along to a song that's basically mocking them. As the fourth single from Nevermind, "In Bloom" was Top Five in the US on the Album and Mainstream Rock charts, and Top 30 pretty much everywhere else. When the Singles box set came out in 1995, it re-surfaced on a few European charts for a bit. But at that point Cobain had already died by suicide, and Nirvana was no more. Yeah, I think we're good here. Click here for a transcript of this show. Click here to become a Patron of the show.

The sixteen-time Grammy nominee and three-time winner joins us to talk about his remarkably varied body of songwriting from country to to rock to political songs to Americana and contemporary folk. EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE Scott and Paul tell you how you can hear their wild story about getting ready for the Steve Earle interview, and they explain why this episode is particularly special. PART TWO - 7:12 mark Paul and Scott head over to Steve's Los Angeles hotel to get the details on how a Chicago radio station saved his career; why reading is more important than listening to records; the book Townes Van Zandt loaned him that transformed his view of writing; the concert that inspired Steve to write "Guitar Town;" what he really thinks of the "Copperhead Road" line-dancing phenomenon; the first song he wrote after a long period of drug addiction and homelessness; why bluegrass is like bebop; who he says is THE badass country singer/songwriter in Nashville today; why he's working on a new political album that isn't just about preaching to the choir; and which song he would play for Guy Clark today to try to impress him. ABOUT STEVE EARLE Singer, songwriter, musician, author, actor, record producer, and progressive political activist Steve Earle rose to prominence in the 1980s with his album Guitar Town, which topped the Billboard country album chart, earned two Grammy nominations, picked up a Top New Male Artist nomination from the Academy of Country Music, and is included among Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 Greatest Albums of all Time. Raised in Texas, Earle launched his career in Nashville playing bass in legendary songwriter Guy Clark’s backing band. Following a stint recording with a rockabilly-influenced sound for Epic Records, Earle switched to MCA where he broke through with now-classic songs such as “Guitar Town,” “Someday,” “Goodbye’s All We’ve Got Left,” “My Old Friend the Blues,” “Fearless Heart,” “Nowhere Road,” “I Ain’t Ever Satisfied,” “The Devil’s Right Hand,” “The Other Kind,” and “Copperhead Road,” which reached the Top 10 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart. Drug addiction, homelessness, and a period of incarceration derailed Earle’s career for several years before he reemerged in the mid-1990s as standard-bearer for contemporary folk and Americana music. His eclectic comeback albums Train a Comin’, I Feel Alright and El Corazon garnered near-universal critical praise. The new millennium found Steve continuing to earn attention for his songs, including “Galway Girl,” “John Walker’s Blues,” “Jerusalem,” “The Revolution Starts Now,” and “City of Immigrants.” Always difficult to categorize, Steve has recorded the highly-acclaimed bluegrass album The Mountain with The Del McCoury Band, a traditional blues album called Terraplane, and a duet album with Shawn Colvin. In total, Earle has released nineteen studio albums and has earned sixteen Grammy nominations, including three wins in the Best Contemporary Folk Album category. Steve’s songs have been covered by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Patty Loveless, Joan Baez, Travis Tritt, Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, Wanda Jackson, Bob Seger, Levon Helm, and many others. His son, Justin Townes Earle, is a respected singer-songwriter in his own right.

On this date in 1985, the charity song “We Are The World” was released. Here are some things you may not have known about it. More than a million people died as a result of a widespread famine in Ethiopia between 1983 and 1985, in the midst of more than two decades of insurrection and civil war. In response to this, musician Bob Geldof organized a supergroup of mostly British and Irish musicians called Band Aid to record a charity single called “Do They Know It’s Christmas.” The song ended up raising 8 million pounds in the first year. Inspired by the success, Harry Belafonte decided to organize an American version. Calling the group USA For Africa, the USA standing for United Support of Artists, the group would raise money for African famine relief and to fight hunger in the United States. Belafonte called on entertainment manager Ken Kragen, whose clients included Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers. Stevie Wonder was the third artist to join up. Quincy Jones was brought on to co-produce the song, and he convinced Michael Jackson to join the effort. Jackson, Richie and Wonder were initially assigned songwriting duties, but Wonder had to drop out because of time constraints. Jackson and Richie spent a week working together on the song. The duo completed writing the song the night before recording was scheduled to begin. On the night of Jan. 22, Jackson, Richie, Wonder and Jones recorded a vocal guide of the song to send to the artists who would be participating in the full recording session about a week later. At about 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 28, musicians began gathering at A&M Recording Studios in Hollywood. The final version was completed at about 8 a.m. The song was released on March 7, and went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 after two weeks, becoming the second song after “Let It Be” by The Beatles to his No. 1 so quickly. The song topped Billboard’s Adult Contemporary, R&B and Dance charts as well. It hit No. 27 on the Mainstream Rock chart and 76 on the Country Singles chart. A videotape of the recording session ended up being the ninth best-selling home video of the year. The song also topped the charts in 15 other countries, and was the year-end No. 1 hit in Australia and New Zealand. Since its release, the song has raised more than $63 million for USA For Africa’s humanitarian fund. Our question: Who was the only singer on “We Are The World” who also played an instrument on the track? Today is Teachers’ Day in Albania. It’s unofficially National Sportsmanship Day, National Cereal Day, and Peace Corps Day. It’s the birthday of Janet Guthrie, the first woman to race in the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500, who turns 79; actress and comedian Wanda Sykes, who is 53; and actress Jenna Fischer, who is 43. This week in 1985, the top song in the U.S. was “Can’t Fight This Feeling” by REO Speedwagon. The No. 1 movie was “Beverly Hills Cop,” while the novel “If Tomorrow Comes” by Sidney Sheldon topped the New York Times Bestsellers list. Doobie Brothers lead singer, guitarist, and founding member Tom Johnston wrote 9 of the first 13 singles issued by the band between 1971 and 1975. These include the hits “Listen to the Music,” “Long Train Runnin’,” “China Grove,” and the classic rock radio staple “Rockin’ Down the Highway.” His voice can be heard on additional Doobies hits, including “Jesus is Just Alright” and “Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me).” After being sidelined by health issues, Michael McDonald replaced Johnston in the band, with Tom eventually going on to a solo career. He released two albums for Warner Bros., scored a Top 40 single with the self-penned “Savannah Nights,” and performed the song “Where Are You Tonight” for the Dirty Dancing soundtrack, which sold over 11 million albums in the US alone. He returned to the Doobie Brothers in the late 1980s, writing the Top 10 single “The Doctor,” and going on to pen such songs as 1991’s “Rollin’ On,” which was a hit on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart. Additionally, he wrote the title track for their 2011 album World Gone Crazy. In 2014, the band released the album Southbound, featuring duets with well-known country performers Blake Shelton, Hunter Hayes, Toby Keith, Chris Young, Brad Paisley, and others. Johnston continues to front the Grammy-winning Doobie Brothers alongside fellow founder, guitarist and songwriter Patrick Simmons. The band has sold more than 48 million albums, including The Best of the Doobies, which is among the 100 top-selling albums of all time.
Media Nite Radio welcomes to the airwaves Kevin Chalfant. Music fans know Kevin best from his time as lead singer for the uber popular group, Journey for a limited run. Chalfant's first national success came when he joined the group 707 in 1982. With Chalfant on lead vocals, the band enjoyed its biggest hit, "Mega Force", which peaked at #12 on Billboard 's Mainstream Rock chart but soon after they disbanded. In 1984, Chalfant joined the band Steel Breeze. He recorded one album with the band, Heart on the Line, before leaving in 1985. Chalfant later formed The Storm in 1990 with guitarist Josh Ramos and (former) Journey members Ross Valory (bass), Gregg Rolie (keys), and Steve Smith (drums). Journey, a multi-platinum band that was also no stranger to internal conflict, had undergone several personnel changes over the years. As Journey was splintering, The Storm was brewing. Released by Interscope Records in late 1991, The Storm hit the album charts and the band's first single, "I’ve Got A Lot To Learn About Love" surged well into the Top 40 of the Hot 100. Faring even better at Mainstream Rock radio, the single peaked at #6 on the national Billboard charts, and its follow-up, "Show Me The Way" went to #22. That spring, the band went on a major US tour with Bryan Adams and opened for Peter Frampton. When the band was ready to release the second album, the label was emerged in the genre of rap. Therefore, when the album was finally released in 1996, the band was no longer viable. In 1993, Journey came calling but by 1995, Steve Perry decided to return to the band leaving Chalfant out. After some time off, Chalfant put out his first solo album and now is a member of The Voices of Rock. Kevin will be at Wheeling Island Hotel, Casino and Racetrack in West Virginia.
