Baxie speaks with Derrick Ogrodny—owner of Heavy Medication Records. This is an independent record label that distributes a great lineup of predominantly American music all out of Warsaw, Poland. Much of which has been highlighted on this podcast in the past year such as The Hangmen, Street Walking Cheetahs, and the Neverland Ranch Davidians. This is an amazing story of a Chicago native that moved to Poland nearly 30 years ago and was instrumental in bringing MTV to Eastern Europe. He was also responsible for bringing other American TV networks to Poland such as Comedy Central and Nickelodeon! Amazing stuff! Listen on Apple Podcasts, YouTube, Spotify, and on the Rock102 app! In this shortcast edition of the Podcast for Social Research, BISR's Isi Litke and Jude Webre discuss Fritz Lang's Hangmen Also Die! (1947). Loosely based on the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, and conceived by Lang and Bertolt Brecht mere weeks after his death, the film follows members of the Czech resistance as they attempt to shield Heydrich's killer from Nazi authorities in occupied Prague. Conversation ranges from Lang and Brecht's fraught collaboration to Hanns Eisler's unconventional score, the film's attempts to sell a war-averse American public on the antifascist cause, the nature of Popular Front cultural objects, and the film's connection to the Hollywood blacklist. To what extent does Hangmen Also Die! succeed as propaganda, as procedural, and/or as epic theater? How does the film embody the tensions intrinsic to Popular Front coalitions? And what might the film teach us about antifascist politics and propaganda in our current moment? The Podcast for Social Research is produced by Ryan Lentini. Baxie talks to Bryan Small from the legendary LA band The Hangmen! Bryan's career has taken him for one hell of a ride. From having a major record label ruin their first album by mixing it without the band's permission or input, to their second album being shelved by another major record label, to fighting years of addition, to reforming the band eleven years later—only to release the best music of their career. It's a truly wild story from one the best kept secrets in music! Listen on Apple Podcasts, YouTube, Spotify, and to the Rock102 app! Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee!
Today's guest is Rock ‘N Roll distilled. Welcome Bryan Small of The Hangmen to the podcast. This guy lived the sex, drugs, & rock ‘n roll life until he realized it wasn't sustainable. Born in Montana and raised in Idaho, Bryan moved to L.A. because his favorite bands were there. From there, every rock ‘n roll story seems to have happened to The Hangmen. There first album was remixed just before release without their knowledge, the follow up album was hampered by drug addiction and was never released. Bryan talks about the mental aspects of drug addiction and what he and the band would do to feed it. But after seeing the devastation of addiction, he cleaned up and has been that way for 30 years. He started recording again and after a more than decade long gap between the first and second Hangmen album, he's been releasing music consistently. He talks about the latest version of The Hangmen, why there's basically two bands on the album Cactusville, and why he moved back to Montana. Gaiety Productions in association with Decadent Theatre Company proudly presents the IRISH PREMIERE of Hangmen by Martin McDonagh from 11 March – 8 April 2023. In his small pub in Oldham, Harry is something of a local celebrity. But what's the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they've abolished hanging? Amongst the local reporters and sycophantic pub regulars, dying to hear Harry's reaction to the news, a peculiar stranger lurks, with a very different motive for his visit… This major new production comes hot off the heels of the release of McDonagh's new award-winning feature film, The Banshees of Inisherin. The creative team is led by director Andrew Flynn who has a long association with McDonagh's work. This darkly comic tale follows the success of recent Gaiety Productions including The Cripple of Inishmaan, The Lieutenant of Inishmore and The Lonesome West. Funded by the Arts Council | An Chomhairle Ealaíon This production contains strong depictions of violence. Recommended for ages 14+

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Michael Dane, Author, “HomoAmerican: The Secret Society” Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Michael Dane, Author, “HomoAmerican: The Secret Society” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Michael Dane, has written a multiple award-winning and critically acclaimed memoir entitled, “HomoAmerican: The Secret Society”. Our guest started out with a prestigious scholarship at the Julliard School of American Ballet in New York, then moved to the American Ballet Theatre, and was then recruited to the Iranian National Ballet in 1976. But when it became frightfully clear that the Shah of Iran was about to be overthrown, our guest fled the country in a harrowing escape over the Turkish mountains. He then danced with the world famous “Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo”, performing in the most glamorous venues. He then reinvented himself as a singer-songwriter, moved to Paris, signed a recording contract with Aquarius Records, and recorded 3 albums. As a provocative and innovative performer in Europe and New York, he became something of a sensation, headlining at the most avant garde clubs including “Studio 54”, “The Grapevine” and “The Anvil”. He then became an actor, appearing in movies like “Spike of Bensonhurst”, “A Certain Sacrifice”, “Hangmen” and “It Could Happen to You”, and on TV shows including “All My Children” and “Saturday Night Live”. And the things he's had to do to make a living when he was BETWEEN jobs? Well, you'll have to read the book to learn about that. What makes his book so special, is his ability to articulate, in the most exquisite way, the stark reality of life for most gay men, especially from my generation – the journey of growing up in isolation, and in ghettos created by stereotypes, forcing us to create false personas and identities in a world that insists that we wear a disguise in order to survive. The book has won numerous awards, including THREE Royal Dragonfly Awards, the Independent Author Network Award, and the IndieReader Discovery Award. And the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts AND the Stonewall National Museum & Archives have added the book to their research collections. This is an introspective, insightful, brutally honest and occasionally shocking account of a turbulent, sometimes chaotic – but always fascinating – life lived on the edge. When this week’s Nose hits the sky, it’s not just a call. It’s a warning. Matt Reeves’ The Batman is the highest-grossing film of 2022 so far by a fairly wide margin. It stars Robert Pattinson in the title role, and it’s the first entry in a new Batman shared universe. Two sequels are expected and two HBO Max television series are planned. Pattinson’s Batman exists alongside the DC Extended Universe, in which Ben Affleck plays Batman, and, it turns out, alongside a universe where Michael Keaton is still Batman. It’s a shared multiverse that I’m talking about, I guess. Pattinson is Batman in what is apparently called ‘Earth-2.’ I am not making any of this up. I could not make any of this up. Anyway, The Batman premieres on HBO on April 23. It is available to stream on HBO Max and for digital rental and purchase now. Oh, and it’s still in theaters, too. And: Netflix announced this week that it lost 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter of the year and that it expects to lose another 2 million this quarter. And its animation department is kind of falling apart. And it’s now going to crack down on password sharing. And then its market value dropped more than $50 billion over night. Yikes. Some other stuff that happened this week, give or take: Robert Morse, Impish Tony-Winning Comedy Star, Is Dead at 90 He dazzled as a charming corporate schemer in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” His later triumphs included a memorable role on “Mad Men.” Liz Sheridan, ‘Seinfeld’ actress, dead at 93 Radu Lupu, celebrated Romanian pianist, dies at age 76 In Cleveland, Some Fans Are Guardians Only of the Past Cleveland’s baseball team adopted a new nickname, and their home opener was the first in years without Native American protests. That doesn’t mean everyone was happy. The Artful, Subdued Translations of Modern Pop Young artists like Latto, Vince Staples, and Doechii are subtly persuading listeners to rethink the way music genres can be interpreted.
