CoderDojo Zero is inviting anyone from 7 to 17 with an interest in coding to join them on International Computer Security Day - Saturday, November 30th. From its home at Republic of Work on Cork's South Mall, Ireland's original coding club will give new members the chance to win one of three reconditioned laptops, as well as offering them useful hacks to keep devices safe and a workshop on internet safety. The goal of the event is to arm children and young people with the knowledge and tools they need to securely navigate the web and get grips with the technology that is increasingly part of their lives. Bill Liao, who co-founded the CoderDojo movement and regularly attends the CoderDojo Zero club, said: "It's never been more important for people to keep their devices and data secure. At CoderDojo, kids gain knowledge that gives them power - by developing a fundamental understanding of technology, they are less vulnerable to the internet's traps and pitfalls and better equipped to deal with the threats they will inevitably encounter because the number one failure in security in the world is humans." CoderDojo helps steer young coders away from the dark side so they can be part of the solution when it comes to internet and software security. They believe not only is it the more ethical route, it also offers the potential for a high reward career path in Cybersecurity. The CoderDojo event for International Computer Safety Day takes place on Saturday, 30th November, between 1.30 and 4 pm. Children and young people between the ages of 7 and 17, along with their parents, are welcome to attend. Andrew and I were practicing daily on the South Mall of the university as the Brobdingnagian Bards. So we were there as a bunch of students ran through the school shouting and waving signs about the oppression of pants. The event resonated with me because, well, we wore kilts at all of our shows. We were “pantless” too. The event spread to other locations around the nation and eventually the world. But it took me four years before I wrote “A Man Who Wears A Kilt Every Day”, a parody of the traditional Scottish song “Jock Stuart”. Instead of “a man you don't meet every day”, my song was about a man who loved wearing kilts, like I did. I didn't stop there. Again, I felt like No Pants Day was a Scottish holiday. So I decided to create a backstory for my song. I wanted people to think that the origins of No Pants Day was actually a Scottish holiday called No Troosers Day. I researched Scottish history and learned about the Proscription Act of 1746. This act banned the Scots from wearing “highland clothing”. The goal of course was to assimilate the Scots into Great Britain, just like the Disarming Act banned the Scottish from wearing weapons. From that base, I wrote a fictional history of an uprising in Glasgow where the Scots removed their trousers and donned their kilts and rewrote “Jock Stuart” to celebrate their love of the kilt and their culture. The best thing about this fictional history was that a few years later, a newspaper in Canada quoted the blog where I shared this fake history saying that this was ACTUALLY the origins of No Pants Day. This should serve as a reminder to all of us. Check your sources! I finally recorded this song in 2009 for my CD, Kilted For Her Pleasure. “Jock Stuart (A Man Who Wears A Kilt Every Day)”  lyrics by Marc Gunn, May 6, 2004, music traditional Oh my name is Jock Stuart, I´m a trooser-less man And my roving young fellows move freely * So be easy and free in nae boxers or briefs I´m a man who wears a kilt every day. I'm Highlander made and a piper to trade And the tartan is me flag that I wear. I go out with my gun and my dog for to hunt Try to make me wear troosers, and you'll pay. I've got acres of land, I've got ships to command So burn your pants on No Troosers Day So come fill up my glass with whiskey or rum Then send o'er your lass and you'll see. It's better easy and free in nae boxers or briefs I'm a man who wears a kilt every day. 20:52 - Marc Gunn “A Man Who Wears A Kilt Every Day” from Kilted For Her Pleasure 23:40 - JOIN THE CLUB The show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. It also lasts pretty much forever. It is virtually impossible to remove it entirely from what I buy. But I have found a few items that I enjoy that are not that I thought I'd share. Did you know you can buy shampoo and conditioner in bar form? This was one of those weird rabbit holes I went down. Once upon a time, we didn't have liquid shampoo and conditioner. It certainly wasn't in a big plastic bottle. A day after I started researching this a few months back, Gwen came home with a Love Beauty and Planet shampoo conditioner bar from Target. I immediately tried it out and loved it. You can see a list of Shampoo and Conditioner bars here. My favorite body soap is the Dr Bronner's Lavender soap. I was starting to lament losing that when I just saw they have bar soap also. And of course, all of those are wrapped in paper and I can get it at my local Publix. 34:58 - Marc Gunn “Kilty Pleasure” from Selcouth 38:59 - CREDITS Thanks for listening to Pub Songs & Stories. Leo of Harmundi shares how an improvisational set of tunes turned into their brand new single. We like to call our music "psychedelic Irish music" because a great part of it is made out of improvisations, in a real-time dialogue between the instruments. Among our sets, one in particular, called "Jump At The Morrison" has been present in every show we ever played and in each one of our albums – although every time it is iterated in a significantly different way, because at least half of it is created on-spot with no time limit. We based our new single on this set. The Pandemics proved a time to abandon our comfort zones, so we decided to record it as a single in yet a newer way: stripped out of both tunes (Jump At The Sun and Morrison's Jig), leaving only the improvs. Contrary to what we are also used to, the harmony was first composed by our guitarist, and the melodies were created following her progressions. The Pandemics were also a time for us to relearn our concepts of time and develop a new relationship with the "here and now". Because of that, we made it our shortest track yet, very different from the usual 6 - 10 minutes we're used to working with. And we made it with no clear beginning, middle or end, in a way some music traditions of the world work: it can either be looped (hence the name, which can also produce a "loop"), or be seen like a river that just flows forward – and, in that case, to watch it go is to simply stay with the flow of the present moment. The single was recorded in our personal home studios and mixed by our mandolinist. The artwork was designed by our flutist, who is also a photographer, based on one of his photos. 4:25 - “Op At The Lo” by Harmundi from single You can find more about Harmundi at Harmundi.art, and you can enjoy their “Jump at the Morrison” set on show #525 of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. You can also buy their music on Bandcamp, which is my favorite place to recommend you to buy, because that's where the artists get paid the most. Save 15% with an annual membership. 7:11 - STORY OF JOHNNY JUMP UP In 1999, I was playing on the South Mall with the Brobdingnagian Bards. We played at lunchtime five days a week to try and improve our chops and maybe make a few fans. And fans we made. More and more people sat in the grass of the mall eating their lunch and listening to us play. At the end of one show, a man approached us and asked if we knew some Celtic bands. I was brand new to Celtic music at the time. I had no clue who The Wolfe Tones, The Irish Balladeers or Christy Moore were. But when he came back, he brought me a mixtape with a couple albums by those first two and a few tracks by Christy Moore as well. I ate it up. I listened to the cassette constantly. It was my true entry into the world of Celtic music. The two tracks by Christy Moore stood out the most. One was a brilliant, rockin' folk version of “Lanigan's Ball”. The fiddle and the bodhran. OMG. It was just amazing. The other was a ¾ time signature version of “Johnny Jump Up”. I soon added that to our repertoire. Our version stood out at Excalibur Fantasy Faire because of the rhythm. You see, the song was making its rounds on the faire circuit. The Bedlam Bards sang it. And there were a bunch of people at the Tavern who also sang it. But the later version was very poppy. I was anti-pop at the time. So the upbeat vocal harmonies just annoyed the hell out of me. It wasn't until last year that I realized Gaelic Storm released a version of “Johnny Jump Up” on their album “What's the Rumpus?”. I'm guessing that's where that upbeat version gained popularity. But who knows now. Nevertheless, when the Brobdingnagian Bards split up in 2008, I wanted to do something new with the song. I moved to New Orleans in 2009. When I sat down to record Happy Songs of Death, I decided to give it a little rhythm of my own. It turned into quite a fun song to sing. You can hear another version of me singing this song in show #222 St Patrick's Day Gift. I do highly recommend you check out that episode if you haven't. That's because I also sang on a Celtic Rock version of that song by Tuatha de Danann. It is insanely awesome. Next week, you get to hear a story and a tune by Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh from my 2019 Celtic Invasion of Dingle, Ireland. 9:58 - “Johnny Jump Up” by Marc Gunn from Happy Songs of Death Pub Songs & Stories was produced by Marc Gunn. Inspiration is a funny friend. It finds you and guides you. It takes you to strange and wonderful places. It introduces you to heroes. I started playing Celtic music in 1999... by accident. I had three "Celtic" songs in my song repertoire: "The Scotsman", "Irish Ballad" by Tom Lehrer, and an original Enya-esque song with nonsensical lyrics called "Lounging in La La Land". I was practicing on the South Mall at the University of Texas at Austin when red-haired gentleman asked if I'd like to perform at a Renaissance festival. As a Dungeons & Dragons nerd, I was so excited I asked my friend Andrew McKee to start a band with me. Soon the Brobdingnagian Bards found new Celtic music heroes and inspiration. For me, it was The Wolfe Tones, Christy Moore, The Irish Balladeers, and some random cassette that was called Irish Drinking Songs. That was my introduction to Celtic music. Those were my first Celtic music heroes. Later, I added Ed Miller, Serious Kitchen (featuring Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer), Dougie MacLean, The Elders, Gaelic Storm, Clandestine, and even Bing Crosby.
