CoderDojo Zero is inviting anyone from 7 to 17 with an interest in coding to join them on International Computer Security Day - Saturday, November 30th. From its home at Republic of Work on Cork's South Mall, Ireland's original coding club will give new members the chance to win one of three reconditioned laptops, as well as offering them useful hacks to keep devices safe and a workshop on internet safety. The goal of the event is to arm children and young people with the knowledge and tools they need to securely navigate the web and get grips with the technology that is increasingly part of their lives. Bill Liao, who co-founded the CoderDojo movement and regularly attends the CoderDojo Zero club, said: "It's never been more important for people to keep their devices and data secure. At CoderDojo, kids gain knowledge that gives them power - by developing a fundamental understanding of technology, they are less vulnerable to the internet's traps and pitfalls and better equipped to deal with the threats they will inevitably encounter because the number one failure in security in the world is humans." CoderDojo helps steer young coders away from the dark side so they can be part of the solution when it comes to internet and software security. They believe not only is it the more ethical route, it also offers the potential for a high reward career path in Cybersecurity. The CoderDojo event for International Computer Safety Day takes place on Saturday, 30th November, between 1.30 and 4 pm. Children and young people between the ages of 7 and 17, along with their parents, are welcome to attend. The event is free, but please register your interest at https://codeclub.org/en/clubs/ie/cork/coderdojo-zero, where more details are also available.

From the moment his father handed him an IBM PC with the simplest of instructions - "Play with it, don't be afraid" - Aral Balkan's worldview was forever changed. Our chat with this developer, professional speaker, consultant, and serial entrepreneur takes us on an enlightening journey through his life, shaped by his early immersion in technology's limitless potential. Aral's deep-seated passion for programming, his dedicated commitment to simplicity, and his advocacy for the internet as a tool for personal empowerment and democratized communication are nothing less than inspiring.Aral reflects on the evolution of the internet, once perceived as a decentralized entity, now understood as a client-server system molded partly by venture capitalists who recognized its potential. He emphasizes the need for coding education, applauding initiatives like Code Club and the involvement of Google, Raspberry Pi, and Coder Dojo in promoting coding. But our conversation doesn't stop there. Aral urges us to confront the systemic inequality in the digital space and the pressing need for simple articulation of the problem to spur action. He introduces us to the concept of small web and the empowering idea of owning and controlling one's own means of communication. Our dialogue extends to the importance of alternative funding methods for initiatives that serve society. Aral shares his views on the limitations of relying on political institutions for funding and the absolute necessity for communication tools to be accessible to all. We tackle the issue of arrogance in the open source community and its impact on software usability, and discuss 'kitten', a framework and server for building small websites, with its innovative security measures and potential as a learning tool. Join us for this essential conversation for anyone interested in the intersection of technology, empowerment, and democracy. James was just 17 when he hacked the Apple iPod Nano. This act of creativity catapulted him into the world's spotlight. His next massive success was establishing CoderDojo to teach kids about technology & coding. What began as a small group in Cork soon spread all over the globe. James gives us a compelling account of his exceptional journey. We also shed light on the emotional toll of his period, delving into the burnout he experienced, the self-reflection that followed, and the significance of self-care when charting such an ambitious path. We explore the challenges of maintaining authenticity in the face of success, the pitfalls of seeking external validation, and the merits of finding joy in the journey itself instead of the end result. After spending time in the Middle East as CTO of a major tech company, James now splits his time between Japan and Ireland while building Conjure, his latest project. Shownotes: https://coderdojo-schoeneweide.github.io/

Park Place Technologies, the world's largest global data centre and networking optimisation firm, has opened its long-awaited Support & Operations Centre at Blarney Business Park, Cork. This project is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland. “I am delighted to welcome the official opening of the new Park Place Technologies facility in Blarney, a very positive development for Cork and for the broader region,” Taoiseach Micheál Martin said. “The opening of the new facility is a testament to the Park Place Technologies' continued commitment to Ireland and the growth and success of the company here. The Government will continue to work to support our thriving technology sector, and leading companies such as Park Place Technologies, as we build on the record 2.5 million people now in employment in Ireland and ensure continued opportunities in the future.” Park Place's new flagship facility consists of 24,500 square feet. The new facility 6km north of Cork's city centre, will accommodate Park Place's growth, allow employee expansion (projected to double by 2024), offer a landmark facility for clients, and provide a high-quality meeting space for prospects and channel partners. Work positions are filled with local talent, and recruitment will continue for highly skilled engineering and technology positions. These include multiple roles including Support Centre Representatives, Advanced Engineering Technical Support and Buyer Planners. Customer support at the facility is available in all European languages. Park Place has a long history of investment and philanthropy in Ireland and the wider EMEA region. Its STEM efforts have included partnerships with CoderDojo, a non-profit that teaches children fundamental aspects of computer coding; and a laptop donation programme, TechForGood, with I Wish, an Ireland-based non-profit committed to showcasing the power of STEM to teenage girls. Ian Shearer, Park Place Managing Director, EMEA & APAC, said, “Park Place Technologies opened its first office in Cork in 2018. Our growth, commitment to the people of Ireland, and investment in local Irish communities through our STEM philanthropy has been consistent, dedicated and a tremendous addition to Cork's tech presence. Ireland is a prime destination from which to serve our European and global customer base.” “Park Place represents a modest investment for Ireland, but Ireland represents a major piece of our global investment in customer and employee experience,” said Park Place President and CEO Chris Adams. “As Park Place gains more experience in nearly every region of the globe, it is clear to us that Ireland is a special strategic partner; and the people and business community of County Cork are truly world-class in their collaboration, tech skills and vision for the future. We offer tremendous gratitude to IDA Ireland, which has offered insight, guidance and access to resources that have been invaluable to our investment,” he added. Plans for Park Place Technologies' New Centre The new Park Place building in Blarney Business Park represents a direct investment in Ireland. Park Place plans to host business and local community events in the facility, so it's a premise that will benefit the wider community in County Cork in an interactive and accessible way. “Park Place does not want to be viewed as another U.S. business setting up shop for itself,” said Chris Adams. “We do things differently when we invest in a community, and we want to prove ourselves as a part of the lives of the people of County Cork.” Department Manager, Technology Division at IDA Ireland Anne-Marie Tierney Le-Roux said, “Congratulations to Park Place Technologies on the opening of its Support & Operations Centre in Blarney Business Park. Since first announcing its arrival to Ireland in 2018, Park Place Technologies has developed into an important member of the South West Region's established Tech cluster. I wish the team at Park Place Technologies every succ...
Writing computer code might seem daunting. But across Sub-Saharan Africa, children as young as three are learning how to talk to computers. Coding clubs are springing up all over Africa to teach the region's future tech leaders how to do everything from building computer games, to creating smartphone apps, controlling robots, and running scientific experiments. This week on Africa Science Focus, we meet Wariara Waireri from the Raspberry Pi Foundation, a global computer and digital technology charity that's helping to set up clubs across the continent. And, Lagos club leader Queen Elohoghene Justice-Usum tells us how coding champions are convincing schools and governments that kids should learn the language of computers. You can learn more about CoderDojo here, and join a Code Club here. I don't know if you have realized it yet, but technology isn't going anywhere. Many jobs (dare I say most?) of the future will require some coding skills. Join Courtney as she chats with Greg Bulmash, founder of the Seattle Chapter of CoderDojo, software developer, and stand-up comic. The catch? He studied Creative Writing in college and was told, you guessed it, he just wasn't qualified to be a developer. Spoiler alert - he proved them wrong and you can too. Hi #smartcommunity friends! Welcome back to the Summer Series here on the Smart Community Podcast. As you know, we're taking a little break from new content over the Australian summer holidays, and instead we are sharing the replays of a few of your all time favourite episodes. This week we're sharing my interview with Emily Royall, from way back in Episode 122, from mid 2019, soon after I got back to Australia from my Churchill Fellowship trip.Emily is the Smart City Coordinator of the City of San Antonio, Texas. Emily tells us about her passion for advancing equity in Smart Cities, and the Community Driven Smart City model that San Antonio is pursuing. We discuss the digital divide in San Antonio and the equity questions municipalities need to think about when being marketed to by the companies mediating Smart City data. Emily then tells us about a number of really interesting and innovative projects the City of San Antonio is working on, including how they've partnered with kids in the local CoderDojo coding program to get viable prototypes for their community. Emily and I finish our conversation discussing her thoughts on integrating across disciplines and the jobs of the future, as well as the emerging trends of digital justice and digital equity. We'll be sure to get Emily back on the show in the future for a full update about what he's been up to and also how our thinking has progressed since this conversation. But in the meantime, we hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we enjoyed making it!Find the full show notes at: www.mysmart.communityConnect with Emily on Twitter @emily_royall and LinkedInConnect with me via email: hello@mysmart.communityConnect with My Smart Community via LinkedIn or Twitter and watch on YouTubeThe Smart Community Podcast is produced by Perk Digital.

Greg Wohlwend developed the popular game Threes with his colleague Asher Vollmer. Greg is a games illustrator and designer who was part of teams that made Hundreds, Gasketball, Solipskier, and Ridiculous Fishing. Threes is his breakout game — and has inspired lots of admiration, frustration, and imitation. He and I talk in this episode about the joy of success, the burden of being independent, and the problems with parasites. Sponsors & Patrons This podcast is made possible through the support of sponsors and patrons. Thanks to patrons George O'Toole, Jonathan Mann, and Sean Wickett for supporting us directly through Patreon! You can back this podcast for as little as $1 per month. At higher levels, we'll thank you on the air and send you mugs and T-shirts! Show notes The Oatmeal's Matthew Inman was nominated for two 2014 Eisner Awards. Greg wrote this post to the hobbyist on the ledge. Greg designed the logo for Indie Game: The Movie; the creators of that film are two-time guests on the show, first in December 2012, and then a year later for a check in. The money in Minecraft is in YouTube videos of people playing through levels. We ran a story about this in The Magazine. The Scratch programming language leads to the Pencil programming language which led to JavaScript for my older son. CoderDojo uses Scratch to mentor kids in programming. Max Temkin baited a Los Angeles Times reporter who wrote an uninformed piece about the Threes ripoff 2048. The extended account of Threes development reveals the exhaustive and useful process of iteration, testing, and killing one's darlings. The Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast had a very nice discussion at the end of an episode where one panelist recommend 2048, and another explained kindly that Threes was the original and the thing to which one graduates as it's tougher. (Listen around minute 37.) Greg recommends the Indomie brand of ramen.
