As right-wing streamers like Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens have become more outspoken against Israel and against Zionist influence in American politics, their content has found new audiences online, even in a Palestine movement traditionally more associated with the left. Though the fracture on the right around Israel is a welcome development, the anti-Israel right's racist, misogynist, anti-trans, anti-immigrant, and antisemitic views raise questions about how the left should relate to this development, and what it can offer instead. On this episode of On the Nose, Jewish Currents editor-in-chief Arielle Angel speaks with Izz al-Din Mustafa, co-executive director of the Palestinian-led advocacy organization Adalah Justice Project, and Stefanie Fox, executive director at Jewish Voice for Peace, about whether the ubiquity of right-wing anti-Israel voices online was showing up in their face-to-face organizing. They discuss the perils and opportunities created by the growing popularity of conservative anti-Israel voices, the importance of IRL organizing, and how the left might reclaim the conversation.

What up Fellas!

pWotD Episode 2726: Yahya Sinwar Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 475,444 views on Friday, 18 October 2024 our article of the day is Yahya Sinwar.Yahya Ibrahim Hassan Sinwar (Arabic: يحيى إبراهيم حسن السنوار, romanized: Yaḥyá Ibrāhīm Ḥasan al-Sinwār; 29 October 1962 – 16 October 2024) was a Palestinian militant and politician who served as the leader of the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip from February 2017 and as the leader of Hamas as a whole from August 2024 until his death, succeeding Ismail Haniyeh in both roles.Sinwar was born in the Khan Yunis refugee camp in Egyptian-ruled Gaza in 1962 to a family who had been expelled or fled from Majdal 'Asqalan (modern Ashkelon) during the 1948 Palestine War. He finished his studies at the Islamic University of Gaza, where he received a bachelor's degree in Arabic studies. In 1989, Sinwar was sentenced to four life sentences in Israel for orchestrating the abduction and killing of two Israeli soldiers and four Palestinians he considered to be collaborators. He spent 22 years in prison until his release among 1,026 others in a 2011 prisoner exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. During his time in prison, Sinwar continued to coordinate the execution of Palestinians suspected of collaboration with Israel and planned the abduction of Israeli soldiers. Sinwar was one of the co-founders of the security apparatus of Hamas. In 2017, Sinwar was elected as the leader of Hamas in Gaza and claimed to pursue 'peaceful, popular resistance' the following year, supporting the 2018–2019 Gaza border protests, though he is also reported to have been dedicated to eradicating Israel and is said to have seen military confrontation as the only path to "liberating Palestine", saying that this would be achieved "by force, not negotiations". He also developed strong ties with Iran. Re-elected as Hamas leader in 2021, Sinwar survived an assassination attempt by Israel that same year. He is widely regarded as the mastermind behind the 7 October Hamas-led attack on Israel in 2023. The attack killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and led to the capture of 250 hostages, making the day of the attack the deadliest in Israel's history. Israel responded with an invasion of the Gaza Strip, which has caused widespread destruction in Gaza and killed more than 42,000 Palestinians. The ongoing conflict has since expanded, leading to an Israeli invasion of Lebanon targeted at Hezbollah and exchanges of strikes between Israel and Iran. Sinwar was killed on 16 October 2024, during a firefight with the Israeli military.Hamas and the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades have been designated terrorist organisations by the United States, the European Union, and other countries and, in September 2015, Sinwar was specifically designated a terrorist by the United States government. In May 2024, Karim Khan, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, announced his intention to apply for an arrest warrant for Sinwar for war crimes and crimes against humanity, as part of the ICC investigation in Palestine. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:09 UTC on Saturday, 19 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Yahya Sinwar on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Amy.
Breaking news out of the Middle East: Israel has confirmed the elimination of Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar. Hamas's political leader in Gaza since 2017, Yahya Sinwar is considered one of the masterminds behind the October 7, 2023, massacre on Israel.Sinwar rose through the Hamas ranks as a fierce advocate of violence against Israel, helping establish Hamas's military, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, and the Majd, an internal security service for the Qassam Brigades. What does the death of Sinwar mean for Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza? How does it impact the broader war that Iran's proxies are waging against Israel? What is the reaction within Israel – and within the Arab world? How might Israel, the United States, and our allies capitalize on this strategic shift on the battlefield?FDD hosts a live SITREP with former IDF International Spokesperson and FDD Senior Fellow Jonathan Conricus and FDD Research Fellow Hussain Abdul-Hussain, moderated by FDD Senior Vice President for Research Jonathan Schanzer. For more: fdd.org/events/2024/10/17/sinwar-is-dead-now-what-fdd-sitrep/Watch here: youtube.com/watch?v=Ucb6636vP60

Hamas is a Palestinian political and military organization that emerged in the late 1980s. It was founded during the First Intifada, a Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation. Hamas combines religious and nationalist elements in its ideology, seeking the establishment of an Islamic state in historic Palestine, which includes modern-day Israel and the Palestinian territories. While some leaders have indicated flexibility, the organization's core objective remains the liberation of all of Palestine. Hamas is known for its military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, and has been designated as a terrorist organization by multiple countries, including Israel, the United States, the European Union, and others. It has engaged in armed conflict with Israel, including rocket attacks and guerrilla warfare, and also provides social services within the Gaza Strip, where it holds political control. Hamas remains a central player in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In this episode, we take a look at the group battling against Israel as we continue to deepen our understanding of the conflict. I'm joined by IZZ bassist/vocalist/guitarist John Galgano to celebrate the supremely talented multi-instrumentalist Ray Shulman, a founding member of progressive rock legends Gentle Giant. Ray passed away on March 30 at age 73 and his death hit me hard, as he was one of the first guests I had on this show, back on Episode 12, when we discussed the making of the Free Hand album. John was the perfect guest to discuss Ray, because he's also a bassist, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter, and he too is in a band with a sibling, just as Ray was in Gentle Giant with brothers Derek and Phil. John and I talk about what made Ray and Gentle Giant great, our favorite GG albums, and prog rock in general. Near the end, John discussed the reissue of his solo album, Real Life is Meeting, and what's next for IZZ.
