I was about to start the Top Ten for 1966 when I realised that I had not completed the Chart Series for 1966. So, here's the Australian artist chart entries for July of '66. The Easybeats score the highest-placed chart entry with a song from an EP! We hear from Buddy England, Donna Gaye, Max Merritt & The Meteors, The Twilights and several others; only one #1 but a series of well-remembered songs, including The Skye Boat Song.

Our story begins nearly 200 years ago on an Irish hillside overlooking the Kenmare River in County Kerry, where a massive manor house was to be built for the Mahony family. The Mahonys had long wanted a castle atop that hill. In the early 19th century, John Mahony made the decision to build a large home there, but he lost heart for the project when his boat — returning from London with lead for the roof and wine for the cellar — sank in the river, in full view of the intended site. After that, the project was abandoned for a whole generation. It would not be resumed until John's son, Denis, took up the work. He hired famed Irish architect Sir Thomas Deane to design and build the castellated Gothic Revival home with a huge gallery in the entrance hall, a west wing to form a round tower and a spiral staircase containing in an attached turret.Dromore Castle — the name came from Irish Droim Mór, meaning “large ridge” — came to be well known to the people of County Kerry. Builder Denis Mahony, as a minister in the Church of Ireland, was an ardent proselytizer. During the Great Potato Famine of the 1840s and ‘50s, he set up a regular soup kitchen at the castle … but then he insisted on preaching to the hungry as they were drawn in for the food. Such activities did not make him popular; in fact, in 1850 he was attacked in his own church in town. Then, returning home to Dromore following the melee, he found another angry group had uprooted his flower beds and felled his trees, and now they were preparing to set fire to his castle. Some say the mob was stopped only by the intervention of the local Catholic priest.Ancient? Yeah, Well, Not So Much…But where does the song come into this rambling story?Legend has it this lullaby is one of the oldest extant Irish songs, lulling medieval children to sleep with hush-a-bye, loo, low, loo, low, lan, and with gentle assurances that no matter what riotous troubles lie beyond the walls, safety abide within. It's a lovely legend. Unfortunately, there's no truth to the story that the song is ancient. On the contrary, it traces back… oh, about 125 years or so.Here's What We KnowAfter the ardent Reverend Denis died in 1851, Dromore Castle passed down to a succession of Mahonys. In the 1890s, it came to a national celebrity: tennis star Harold Mahony, who was to be the last Irish winner at Wimbledon. It was during Harold's time as head of the Mahony clan that another Harold — songwriter Sir Harold Boulton — came for a visit. Boulton already was famous for writing “The Skye Boat Song,”and it is thought he wrote the words for his even more popular "Castle of Dromore" during or shortly after that stopover. He published the song in 1892 in English, and later it was translated from English into Irish.Boulton filled his verses with evocative images: autumn winds lamenting around the castle walls, a mother in those peaceful, lofty halls rocking and softly singing to her child. Then we hear her prayer: Let no ill will to hinder us, my loving babe and me, Dread spirits of the Blackwater, Clan Owen's wild banshee. And Lady Mary, pitying us, In Heaven for grace doth sue.Sometimes recorded under the name “October Winds,” this is likely the only song — much less a lullaby — in which you'll heard someone warding off banshees. Surely, though, that reference is a prime reason some listeners have passed along the notion that the song just has to be ancient. Who talks about banshees any more?Banshees in Irish lore — often depicted as crazy, mournful crones — are spirits that portend death in a family. Each castle or clan could claim its own banshee. The banshee's wail was said to sound like the wild wind through the trees, like the winds on raw October night, perhaps? Our Take on the TuneThe Flood's eclectic repertoire can routinely pivot from an R-rated blues or hokum tune to a some sweet family-friendly ballad. Even a lullaby might pop up from time to time, like this lovely Irish melody. And we toss in the banshee for free. This is a public episode. In the first episode of the fourth series of Love Scotland, Jackie Bird sits down with historical writer Flora Fraser to discuss the life and legacy of Flora MacDonald. MacDonald is best known for her part in assisting Prince Charles Edward Stuart's escape from Bebecula to the Isle of Skye in the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden. Aged just 24, and from a pro-government family, MacDonald is as unlikely a Jacobite heroine as you could imagine. And yet, her actions helped Charles evade detection and, eventually, flee to safety. These events have been immortalised by the Skye Boat Song, but despite her crucial role in Charlie's escape, Flora is all-too-often relegated to the background. So, who really was she? What led her to take on the risky mission of smuggling Charles to Skye? And what happened in the years that followed? Flora Fraser is the author of Pretty Young Rebel: The Life of Flora MacDonald, out now (Bloomsbury). To find out more about the National Trust for Scotland's Jacobite sites, click here.

When Jacobite heir Bonnie Prince Charlie made his escape from the British Army on 28th June, 1746, he did so in bizarre style - disguised in drag as Irish spinning-maid ‘Betty Burke'. With a £30,000 bounty on his head, Charles had to rely on the support of strangers - in this case 24 year-old Flora McDonald, who would later serve time in the Tower of London for having assisted him in the escape, memorably documented in the Skye Boat Song. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain why Charles picked this moment to attempt to conquer England from the North; consider why he succeeded, in escaping despite the enormous bounty on his head and his very poor disguise; and ask whether Flora and Charlie's relationship was entirely platonic…  Further Reading: • ‘On this day 1746: Young Pretender escapes Benbecula' (The Scotsman, 2017): https://www.scotsman.com/whats-on/arts-and-entertainment/day-1746-young-pretender-escapes-benbecula-1446281 • ‘Flora MacDonald: The Jacobite Heroine Who Features In Outlander' (HistoryExtra, 2022): https://www.historyextra.com/period/georgian/flora-macdonald-who-life-north-carolina/ • ‘Skye Boat Song - Outlander Theme Song' (Choral Scholars of University College Dublin, 2015): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycVpXbJCx-M … and there's even more on this subject for our supporters on the show. That’s the band name of comedy hip hop artist, Tom Rockwell. Tom is out of New Jersey. I met him at I-Con, the very first convention I ever attended in Stony Brook, New York on Long Island. He was at all of the Brobdingnagian Bards shows there. He is a hilarious musician with a helluva way with words. He’s recorded on the Bards’ CD I Will Not Sing Along. He wrote the lyrics to my song “Doctor Of Gallifrey”. And one of these days, we’re gonna do a recording of “Lannigan’s Ball” as a rap song. Welcome Devo Spice. Can you please tell me your Celtic origins and how it involves comedy hip hop? And in a truly celtic fashion, don’t let facts get in the way. Let’s hear that glib red headed comedic blarney come out full force. DEVO SPICE BACK STORY When I was given the idea of a Doctor Who parody of “Donald McGillavry”, I knew one Whovian who had seen every Doctor Who episode ever made, and was still available. That was Devo Spice. Little did I know at the time that one of The Doctors companions was a Scotsman fighting at Culloden named Jamie. Tom, can you tell me who this kilt-wearing companion was and if he was the same Jamie from The Outlander novels by Diana Gabaldon? And if so, how does he fit into both timelines? ABOUT THE COMPANION JAMIE OF CULLODEN FROM DOCTOR WHO Tom, you also host a comedy music podcast called Manic Mondays. And you’re the founder of The FuMP. Why comedy music? What drew you to it? What’s the funniest song you ever heard on The FuMP? Feel free to say one of mine. And when you're done with that you can tell me which other song of mine was the funniest. (re: this is an actual question. I'm curious what the real funniest song is) FUNNY MUSIC You can check out his podcast at ManicMondays.net. The Funny Music Project is at TheFump.com. And of course, if you want to hear more music by Devo Spice, my favorite album of his is the Doctor Who album, I Am the Doctor. It’s also a favorite by my daughter Kenzie. And she barely knows Doctor Who. You can find out more about his music at DevoSpice.com. Here’s his song “Companion Application” from his CD. 30:34 - Devo Spice “Companion Application” from I Am the Doctor 33:22 -- New Irish & Celtic Song Lyrics. Follow the link in the shownotes. Times are changing. Regular gigs will begin again this year as more and more people take the vaccine. There will be a degree of normality coming. But I’m betting that the pandemic is the final nail into the CD coffin. Sure, some of you will still buy them. But the 40-50% of pre-pandemic sales will drop below 25%. That’s my bet. Of course, cds were the primary source of income for musicians. So what’s next? How do you intend to support musicians into the future? - JOIN THE PUB CHAT —Joe Biden won the 2020 election to become the 46th president of the United States of America. Is there a project you’ve been wanting to start or a skill you’ve always to learn; but you’re worried that there’s a ton of technical things that you don’t know yet? Don’t devalue yourself! You don’t have to be an expert; you have to be willing to learn the things that you don’t know as you go. As long as you have the fundamentals, you can do it. In this episode: How the pandemic induced his creative juice and lead him to paint How an unexpected contract lead to a life-shifting experience in Scotland The influence of his mom’s creativity to his own journey towards discovering his own artistry The Connection between creativity and confidence and how to find your confidence if you are struggling   A little about Duff: Hailing from the wide open prairies of Saskatchewan, Duff has been singing and songwriting since the age of seven. The Wigglian Way Pagan Podcast

Lately we have all been "pulling in" a little bit. We haven't been able to travel across borders for travel or leisure. We have all had to stay home. Sometimes staying close to home we find hidden gems. Here at The Wigglian Way we have been reminded of some musical gems closer to home. Sparrow interviewed our friend Rissy who is a member of the three person band Hem Netjer. Rissy and David are pretty local to us. They make their home in Vancouver. Jesse lives a bit further away and Rissy shares a little bit about how they managed recording with a distant band member. From Hem Netjer's December release Kemet, which just so happens to be our Feature Album we hear Hem Netjer, Anubis, and Spirit Walker.  Our next musical selection comes from someone we have known a long time. Mia Arsenault is a distant member of the Wigglian Coven. Distant because she moved across the country to be with family and work on her musical career.  From Mia we hear Wild Hunt Lullaby and and Skye Boat Song. We are so happy for you, Mia!  Thank you for walking this beautiful way with us. It's all about the love.

The comical history of Rosin the Bow. My failure as a podcaster. What on Middle-earth is a “smial”? A Doctor Whovian Spotlight on Matt Hughes. Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast, the Virtual Public House for Celtic Geek culture. I am your Guide. My name is Marc Gunn. Today’s show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. Subscribe to the podcast and download free music when you sign up at PubSong.com. WHO'S PLAYING IN THE PUB TODAY 00:27 - SONG: “Rosin the Bow” from Happy Songs of Death What does “Rosin the Bow” mean? Rosin is a solid form of resin that's obtained from pines and other conifers. ... Used by cellists, violinists, and other string musicians, rosin helps create friction between the bow hair and strings. Essentially, rosin helps the bow grip the strings and produce sound. That’s from The Vault at Music & The Arts. The song was popularized in America in the 19th century. Though it probably had British or Irish origins according to Wikipedia. The most interesting fact was that the music for the song was used by several US presidential campaigns, including for William Henry Harrison ("The Hero of Tippecanoe"),[3] Henry Clay ("Harry, the Honest and True") and Abraham Lincoln ("Lincoln and Liberty"). 3:02 - WELCOME -- Post a review in Apple Podcasts. As usual, the show is free to listen to. And there are over 50 episodes to enjoy with mostly music, but also a lot of holiday entertainment. Get Celtic Christmas music. -- Browncoat Christmas is now online. Mikey Mason and I released this four song EP of Christmas songs inspired by Joss Whedon’s TV show, Firefly. It’s upbeat and fun. You can download or stream it most everywhere online. -- Short Story of what’s new: My failure as a podcaster. - CD SPONSOR: SCOTTISH SONGS OF DRINKING & REBELLION Hi. I’m Marc Gunn. You may remember me from such kilted bands as the Brobdingnagian Bards, Kilted Kings, and Marc Gunn. Ye know. Me. But perhaps, you don’t know my music. But you may know some fine Scottish Songs of Drinking & Rebellion. That may be a rip off title from a Clancy Brothers album, Irish Songs of Drinking & Rebellion. But the music is pure Scottish fun. You’ll get 17 Scottish songs that will make you want to drink or rise up against England. You’ll hear songs I learned from Ed Miller, The Corries, Widening Gyre (you probably have never heard of that band), and even Outlander… Well, sort of. There are five songs by Robert Burns, including “MacPherson’s Farewell”, “Scots Wha Hae”, “Ye Jacobites by Name”, “A Man’s A Man for A’ That”, and the clean love song version of “Green Grow the Rashes”. There’s the unofficial national anthem of Scotland, “Flower of Scotland”, by The Corries. The “Skye Boat Song” was a fantastic traditional Scottish song even before the lyrics were modified for the Outlander TV show. There’s the great drinking ballad, “Jock Stuart”. And let’s not forget Hugh S. Roberton’s incredible “Mingulay Boat Song” that is given a Louisiana gospel edge. You’ll find it all on Marc Gunn’s Scottish Songs of Drinking & Rebellion. Get it at CelticMusic.org. Now let’s go geek with a song that’s not from that CD... 9:09 - GEEK SONG: “The Smial or the Tree” from Sci Fi Drinking Songs "In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole and that means comfort." - The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien What on Middle-earth is a “smial”? Well the Tolkien Gateway has the answer. “Smials were the hobbit-holes tunneled into earth mounds and hills. For generations the Hobbits dug into the earth to live. By the later Third Age the poorest Hobbits still went on living in burrows of the most primitive kind with only one window or none. For the most well-to-do hobbits, smials were luxurious versions of those primitive diggings of old. Their tunnels had rounded walls and branched to other rooms. Smials included Bag End and the smials along Bagshot Row of Hobbiton, the Great Smials of Tuckborough and Brandy Hall. The latter two were large enough to have ample room for a hundred Hobbits. When suitable sites for these large and ramifying tunnels were not everywhere to be found, many Hobbits lived in wood, brick or stone houses. This was the case with some muddy regions of the Eastfarthing, such as the Marish. "Smial" is a term used by Tolkien fans to refer to divisions of Tolkien Societies. Read more about it at http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Smials 11:25 - CELTIC GEEK SPOTLIGHT: Matt Hughes I've seen Matt Hughes' name for about as long as I can remember. He was an integral part of the Brobdingnagian Bards' community early on. Which is where I first found him. He was also one of the first people to cover a song I wrote. So you know that's gonna make me happy. Hehe He also helped me write “Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster” and performed on “Scouring the Shire” and “Bilbo’s Farewell” (he yelled ‘Proudfeet’) on my CD Don’t Go Drinking With Hobbits. When I asked Matt about being a guest in the Celtic Geek Spotlight, he made some silly reference to the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who. That gave me the idea to have Matt answer all of my questions… without blinking. As soon as he does that, we will be forced to move to a different time period with a new question. Welcome Matt, can you tell me what inspires you with music? Why are you still making music today? What do you have planned for the future? Oh and do it all without blinking… MATT RESPONDS Whoa. It’s 2004. Hey my voice sounds younger. What are you doing at this time in your life, Matt? THIS TIME IN LIFE Pirate Accent: Curses, Matthew! That was just getting good. Avast. Suppose it’s time for ye to tell me about your pirate lifestyle. How did you become a pirate? What songs inspired your travel back in time? Marcia Claesson emailed: "I love Scottish music.  It's hard to pick one. I suppose if we're talking traditional Scottish ballads, I would say "Skye Boat Song."  So if I only have one vote, that would be it. However, if we're talking instrumental, I would say "Niel Gow's Lament on the Death of His Second Wife." And modern songs?  Nothing beats Dougie MacLean's "Caledonia." Thanks so much for your music. I hope you come to Lincoln, Nebraska (or somewhere close) sometime." Allan Marcotte emailed: "Favorite Scottish song?  Either "Sound the Pibroch" or "Welcome Royal Charlie".  What can I say I am a hopeless romantic, there is nothing better than standing with and fighting for a lost cause against impossible odds." Garrett Crowe emailed a photo: "Marc, I'm going through unemployment now, which means lots of tedious work I'm not very good at while job hunting... and trying to keep my spirits up. Nothing does it better than my Dungeons and Dragons sessions and listening to the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. Inspiration is a funny friend. It finds you and guides you. It takes you to strange and wonderful places. It introduces you to heroes. I started playing Celtic music in 1999... by accident. I had three "Celtic" songs in my song repertoire: "The Scotsman", "Irish Ballad" by Tom Lehrer, and an original Enya-esque song with nonsensical lyrics called "Lounging in La La Land". I was practicing on the South Mall at the University of Texas at Austin when red-haired gentleman asked if I'd like to perform at a Renaissance festival. As a Dungeons & Dragons nerd, I was so excited I asked my friend Andrew McKee to start a band with me. Soon the Brobdingnagian Bards found new Celtic music heroes and inspiration. For me, it was The Wolfe Tones, Christy Moore, The Irish Balladeers, and some random cassette that was called Irish Drinking Songs. That was my introduction to Celtic music. Those were my first Celtic music heroes. Later, I added Ed Miller, Serious Kitchen (featuring Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer), Dougie MacLean, The Elders, Gaelic Storm, Clandestine, and even Bing Crosby. So of course many of these you have heard on my podcasts. Who are your Celtic music heroes? Once again, I'm sharing one of my albums from start to finish. St Andrew's is on November 30th this year. In addition to celebrating the feast of St. Andrew, it is also Scotland's official national holiday. So I'm gonna share my album Scottish Songs of Drinking & Rebellion, from start to finish in this show. This album was released on November 30, 2013, five years ago. It was fully produced, mixed and mastered by me. Nathan Deese is a Celtic musician from North Carolina. He sang background vocals on the album. He also played bass, guitar, mandolin, whistle and flute on "Come Ye By Athrol", Green Grow the Rashes", "Ye Jacobites By Name", and "Flower of Scotland". Daniel I Briggs sang background vocals as well and played bass, guitar, mandolin, octave mandolin and all other songs. Jody Richardson added violin on "Loch Tay Boat Song" Jon Richardson played concertina on "MacPherson's Farewell". Most of the tracks were recorded in January 2011. I took my family on a trip up to middle-of-no-where Kentucky to record, while Gwen and baby Kenzie visited a friend in Lexington. I recorded this album, Don't Go Drinking With Hobbits, and St Patrick's Day all at the same time. However, there were two tracks I re-recorded parts later. One was "Mingulay Boat Song". The other was "Flower of Scotland". And when you listen to those, notice the background vocals because I used the wrong settings on my USB preamp. So they came off more compressed sounding. And I LOVED the sound. They kinda make the songs. I found it humorous that in "Ye Canna Shove Yer Granny" that I repeated a verse accidentally. And I didn't notice it while I was editing. The front Photo on the album was taken by Jan Czenkusch on our Celtic Invasion of Scotland in 2013. She also took the pictures inside the CD. I took the ones on the back. And graphic design was by James McDaniel II. Now most of these songs are traditional except for "Flower of Scotland" which is by Roy Williamson. "Mingulay Boat Song" which is by Sir Hugh S. Roberton. "Mari's Wedding" is by John Roderick Bannerman. And "Skye Boat Song" is by Sir Harold Boulton.' And of course Robert Burns wrote "MacPherson's", "Jacobites", "Scots Wha Hae", "A Man's A Man" and "Green Grow the Rashes". I love this album. These are my absolute favorite Scottish, all except I couldn't get a good recording of "Loch Lomond". And some of these recordings, thanks to Nathan and Daniel, made this a powerhouse album in my opinion. Subscribe at Celtfather.com if you want to find out more about some of the songs in the future. And if you have any questions, email me.

In 1746 a young woman, Flora MacDonald, sailed over the sea to Skye with her Irish "maid", Betty Burke. The "maid" was actually Prince Charles Edward Stuart, a fugitive from the forces of King George II who were hunting him following his escape after the disastrous Battle of Culloden. The grandson of James II of England, Prince Charles Edward Stuart, or Bonnie Prince Charlie as he was known in Scotland, had led the second Jacobite Uprising of 1745 to overthrow King George, where his army of Jacobites was slaughtered and he was forced to flee for his life. This was where Flora came into the picture. Like Outlander? Maybe you'll like this. Best and Worst of the Isle of Skye #244

The 2018 Celtic Invasion of the Isle of Skye is over. We had an amazing vacation. Every year, I ask my invaders for feedback. This year, I decided to do it a little different. I wanted to help you figure out what were some of the best things to see when you come visit. So I’m gonna share my Best and Worst things to see on the Isle of Skye, followed by feedback from Invaders, including some of their favorites. Best of the Isle of Skye. My favorite thing in Skye was the Quiraing. This is up in Trotternish. It’s June, lush and green with powerful, towering mountains. Now Skye is a big hiking area. I think most people go to Skye to hike. Most of our Invaders were not big hikers. We were all happy to hike and explore. But the hardcore hiking was not for us. Now I’m sure there’s some difficult hiking in the Quiraing, but the two places we visited were fairly easy. A third place looked even easier. I guess for me there was more room to relax and enjoy the magnificent mountain range in the Quiraing. If you’re looking for one thing to do in Skye, this is my suggestion. My second favorite thing to do in Skye was the Skye Cruises out of Uig. They offered a three-hour boat tour of the ocean and shoreline. We saw a castle, seals, and even watched puffins flying about. The captain was very friendly. He and a friend started this cruise a couple years ago. It made for a very pleasant experience. They provided free snacks and drinks including Skye Beer from the local brewery. They had binoculars available for seeing the sea life too. Of course, it probably helped that the seas were calm. There was a little bit of rain that fell on us for about ten minutes. Then it was done. They had some good Celtic music playing in the back of the boat. And up front, I played songs and along with Pace. And happily Danny and Christine Faught of Green Man Clan joined us. Okay so that was a benefit of me boating out there. Nevertheless, it was a wonderful relaxing trip. Third in my list of the Best of the Isle of Skye we’re The Fairy Pools. On day three of our Invasion, we got a tour guide to take us to The Fairy Pools. The guide was kind of a flop. Not much more than a driver sadly. But the Pools were brilliant. Tho a little tricky too. It was raining when we arrived. We walked down the hill to the starting point. I say walk, but to be honest l, there was a little sliding. I had my bad shoes. The ground was moist and squishy. So I fell a couple times. That didn’t bode well. At the bottom of the hill, there was a stream and no way to cross it but get your feet a little wet. I wasn’t quite in the mood to plunge in. In fact, I was about to skip it. I’m glad I didn’t. I took off my shoes and walked across the small stream. After that, the walk was a breeze. It was a gentle slope into the valley. A river guides you on the right. And all along it are bunches of small waterfalls and “Fairy Pools”. I didn’t go all the way into the mountains. I took my time and had fun making videos. I sat with my feet in the freezing water. It was delightful. Again, I’m so happy I went. The fourth coolest thing for me was the excitement of finding dinosaur tracks. So we stayed in Staffin Bay Cottages. They are located a 3 minute drive from Staffin Bay Slipway. When we arrived, we learned that there were dinosaur tracks down there. So one evening, we hiked over to the beach and looked for the tracks. It took some time to find them, but eventually we did. They were covered in seaweed. They were also difficult to make out. But we went to the local dinosaur museum to confirm. That was cool and all. But 2-3 months ago, new tracks were discovered at Brother’s Point. On Friday, we finally headed to the point. We arrived just before low tide. So I should point out that there are no markers for these prints. You have to find them. Now what I learned at the dinosaur museum was the footprints were found in sedimentary rock. The first step was to find that. I am no geologist. But I did overhear, that sedimentary rock is layered rock. Most of the rocks out there, I think, are igneous. I found a big slab of sedimentary rock and started looking. I found some small impressions and called over Pace and Selena. Pace told me that they were about a foot in diameter. I spent the next thirty minutes staring at the rock. How weird is that! Eventually I noticed differences. I saw breaks in the rock and looking at puddles, I realized the indentations were different from the breaks. I called over Pace and we jokingly decided we found dinosaur tracks. I got some pictures and videos but I don’t think you’ll see much of anything. Pace got a good picture. We decided to take his picture to the dinosaur museum to confirm it. We were thrilled they said yes! Yay. I’m officially an amateur dinosaur track hunter. I was trying to settle on my top 5 of Skye but I couldn’t. So for number five, I picked two. First is the Skye Museum of Island Life. It’s located in the north end of Trotternish. It was a small Croft community. But now it’s a museum. I guess I liked it because it’s the only bit of history we got on Skye. That’s because this was also the place that Flora McDonald was buried. Flora is the woman from the song “Skye Boat Song” who carried the Bonnie Prince Charlie to safety after his defeat at Culloden, which marked the end of the Jacobite Revolution. The museum told that story along with the story of the crofters. I also loved Neist Point. There’s a lighthouse and soaring cliffs and gorgeous ocean vistas. It was stunning. I also recorded a couple videos while I was out there. That was my best of the Isle of Skye. What was the worst? I’m sure many would disagree, but my least favorite thing about Skye was Old Man of Storr. There are some stunning pictures of Storr. As far as I can see, they are either aerial photographs or from way up top on Storr. I don’t have an airplane, and I didn’t have the desire to climb all the way to. I climbed up thru the third gate. About halfway. The view was nice. But not worth the effort. I’d rather go back to the Quiraing. Kilt Rock a beautifully named with almost pleated rocks. But it’s view is located in a very safe and boring park off the road. It was uninspiring. I was disappointed with Talisker Distillery. I like the whisky, but there was no tasting room. You had to do the tour. I’ve done whisky tours before. They’re mildly interesting. It’s the whisky that’s the best thing about them. I bought a bottle but even the store was limited. I think I’m a bit spoiled by Guinness and Bushmills. They’ve got a TON of incredible shops. Plus tastings. Now it’s not a least favorite location but Skye is pretty windy. When it isn’t windy, at least during the summer, the midges are our in full force. Midges are small biting gnats. Think of tiny barely visible mosquitoes. Unless they’re swarming. During the summer, restaurants book up. So make sure you get reservations unless you’re fine with eating at 9 or 10 o’clock. Finally, this is the ultimate in #FirstWorldProblems. But the internet was worse here than pretty everywhere we’ve invaded. Bad internet and bad cell phone. I know. I know. Whine whine whine. You’re on the Isle of Skye! But I was wanting to stay in touch with my girls back home and was sorely disappointed. The house internet was slow. The data on my phone didn’t work at all. Our house was a dead zone for phones as well. I guess the point is you should expect to disconnected. Alright.  That’s what I thought of Skye. Let’s see what folks thought of the Celtic Invasion of the Isle of Skye. -- I hope you enjoyed my Invader feedback. Again, the Celtic Invasion of Skye was a huge success. I'm excited to share some photos and videos from the trip in the coming months. Now I just announced the net two locations that I am planning for the future. In 2019, we're gonna have the Celtic Invasion of Star Wars... We're going back to Dingle, Ireland and this time we're gonna visit Skellig Michael. That's the island from The Last Jedi film. Then in 2020, we're going to Venice, Italy. This is the Origin of Celtic Invasions Vacation. Because the area was conquered by a Celtic tribe called the Veneti that later migrated to Brittany in France, before heading to Cornwall, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. If you find out more about that history, check out two episodes I released last year: The Secret History of the Celts #231 and History of Celtic Brittany #232. And head over to CelticInvasion.com if you want to join one of these awesome vacations. Now I want to ask you to head on over to Spotify and Follow My Music. You will find links to everything I mentioned in the shownotes at Celtfather.com where you can also subscribe to this podcast and download 21 songs for free.

Just wanted to send some personal thanks. My father has been playing Celtic guitar for most of his life and all of mine, so it's been in the house since day one. I thought I had heard it all, each corner and subgenre to be found, but my library has been greatly and duly humbled by your extensive and seasoned pallet. I've shared the podcast and many of its contents with my dad, and it has enriched our Celtic cosmos remarkably. I took the podcast with me last summer while studying abroad in Russia and it was a wonderful way to keep in touch with my roots during my commute. Having also spent time in non-Celtic Spain, the Galicia episode opened another door in my musical conception of Iberia. In short, Thank you!! An amateur flute player myself, I would love to hear a flute-heavy episode, and I'm sure all musicians who listen to the podcast would love their own instrument-themed episodes. Just a thought that has crossed my mind (not that you don't have plenty already!) Keep up the fantastic work---it's very much appreciated!" Thank you Henry. I haven't done a flute or whistle episode. Let me see what I can put together. I wish I had an easy way to search my archive for flute music. Sadly, I don't. But perhaps I can reach out to you and all my listeners. Stephen Reimann emailed: "Dear Celt Father, I am a big fan of your show and what you are doing to add breadth and depth to those who listen to Celtic music. I am an Account Manager for a major Pharmaceutical company which requires an extensive amount of driving.  By extensive I mean on average 60K miles each year.  Your podcast enables me to not only pass the time driving between accounts, but also increase my knowledge and love of all things musically Irish and Celtic.  The theme diversity of your shows is stellar.  Just like Christopher Walken’s SNL character, The Bruce Dickinson, needed “More Cowbell,” I need more bagpipes.  Any chance of another Bagpipe theme’d show in the near future? Thank you for all you do to sharpen our proverbial musical sgian-dubhs." Stephen “Bow Tie Steve” Reimann (Rye-man) Thanks Bow Tie Steve. Yeah. You can never have enough bagpipes. It will have to be a few months, but I'll add that to the list as well. Maybe I should add both this and the flute show as milestones... Would you be interested in another bagpipe show as well. A soundscape about breathing as a barometer of our state of mind and physical health. Working as a therapist with people towards the end of their lives, and with a particular interest in the power of breath regulation as a tool for emotion regulation and symptom control, I started making this 'breath-voice collage' by recording an 'anchor' breath, which would act as a metronome throughout the piece. This was the sound of a heartbeat timed to a 'coherent' breath. This breath, commonly used by meditators and yoga practitioners, is timed at five breaths per minute, and has been shown to help people recover from trauma and anxiety disorders, and to relieve physical and psychological pain (see Brown & Gerberg 2012) and I often use this in therapy. I then interwove recordings I had saved on my iphone over the years…. my children as babies, their sleeping breaths, an old recording of my partner and I singing our child to sleep. I also recorded the breathing of a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and his words, describing how he felt about his loss of breath. Lastly, I used a recording of my father’s breathing during his last days in the hospice. During that time, the sound of his breath was extremely important, precious and fragile because we knew it would end. In the liminal phase between life and death I sang to him the songs he loved. The Skye Boat Song was one of his favourites…. Kate Binnie is a music therapist, yoga and mindfulness teacher with an Msc in Palliative Care and a special interest in the relationship between breath and emotion regulation, and how this can be used clinically in the management of refractory breathlessness across advanced disease.

For many hearing The Skye Boat Song brings back a wealth of childhood memories, as the words "Speed Bonnie Boat Like a Bird on the Wing" tell the story of the escape of Bonnie Prince Charlie, dressed as a maid to the Isle of Skye, after this defeat at the battle of Culloden. Originally written by Sir Harold Boulton and Anne MacLeod back in the 1870's, we explore the beauty of this song and how it continues to touch people's lives across the world in very different ways. Contributors in this programme include: The Queen's Piper, who has played this tune in happy and sad times, recalls playing it outside the Queen's window and leading Princess Margaret's cortege. A New Zealand artist shares his memories of time spent with his father, and the sound of him whistling the song on their way home as dusk fell. A sailor from the Isle of Skye, describes his connection with the spirituality of piece and the Loch on which he sails. Acclaimed violinist Tasmin Little shares her own arrangement of the piece and explains why it works so well musically. An Australian mum, tells how important this song has been in connecting with the two girls she has adopted from China. Gaelic Singer Maggie MacInnes tells the history of the piece. The programme includes music by Julian Lloyd Webber, The Corries and Pete Lashley. Producer - Rachel Matthews.

One of my favorite mixes from last year was Sustain & Decay. It was fun digging up old recordings & mixing them with new releases. So I decided to do a follow-up, with the result being "revenants of the past". It follows the same basic formula of last years mix(which was also released in October). I browsed through a ton of files at archive.org, looking for things like old vinyl records & Edison cylinder recordings from as far back as 1888. I mixed these recordings with current music that either sounds old or in some cases actually uses old recordings as a sound source to be manipulated into something new. In the last mix The Caretaker figured prominently and here too there is an extended track in the middle of this sequel mix. The track is an excerpt from a mix James Leyland Kirby, AKA The Caretaker, did for Fact Magazine. I think "revenants" is a good mix of familiar & unfamiliar artists here. I had to get William Basinksi's Disintegration Loops in somewhere & so the mix closes with a track from Loops #2. Enjoy the entropy. This week Sue Lawley's castaway is a nun and a pioneer of the hospice movement. Sister Frances Dominica says she had always felt she was born to be a nurse and as a child would line up her dolls and teddies in pretend hospital beds and tend to them. But a dramatic revelation during her early 20s diverted her and, to the horror of her family, she abandoned her career for a contemplative life. She took her life vows in 1972 and, in 1977, at the incredibly young age of 34, was elected to be the Mother Superior of her community. The following year she met a family with a sick child and offered to give her respite care. It was that relationship which gave Sister Frances the idea of starting a children's hospice and, in 1982, Helen House opened. It was the first children's hospice in the world. For the past four years she has been fundraising for another hospice - which she calls a Respice, a mixture of respite and hospice – Douglas House, which is geared up for the needs of adolescents and young adults. Like Helen House, it is named after a patient who made a particular mark on Frances, although he did not survive to see it opened.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Skye Boat Song by Elinor Bennett Book: The Earth from the Air by Yann Arthus-Bertrand Luxury: Chaise longue with a mosquito net attached
