Scottish First Minister John Swinney speaks to The Stooshie for a feature-length interview as he nears a year in the top job. He talks about the vital support of family, and how early morning runs listening to The Jam (and his friend Pete Wishart's band Runrig) keep him going. We cover the big challenges he faces in the NHS and education - including troubled Dundee University - as focus turns to the next year before the Scottish Parliament election. He admits he sees all his political opponents as a threat to the SNP after nearly 20 years in power. And as Nicola Sturgeon prepares to publish her memoirs, does John Swinney have book in him too?
In this final podcast of the year we review the whole of 2024 - including my album of the year; crocodile Dundee; Twitter- X; AI - John Lennox; Bitcoin; the rise in anti-semitism; Syria; The Cass Report and the decline of transgenderism; Donald Trump; Country of the Year - Ukraine; the failure of Net Zero; Lonely this Christmas; The fall of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Kings Speech with music from The Cure, Status Quo, Bryan Ferry, Runrig, The Who, Jean-Baptiste Lully, Jethro Tull and Bob Dylan....
The Daily Record's Paul Hutcheon speaks to Perth and Kinross-shire MP Pete Wishart, who has written a book from diary entries during the lead-up to the Scottish Independence referendum ten years ago. Wishart, a Perthshire MP since 2001, looks at media coverage, grassroots movements, speeches and rallies – and a sense that Scotland's political landscape was set to change forever. He has previously described the referendum as “most exciting time in my life”, adding it was a “different type of experience” to when he had played with Scots rock band Runrig. The Possibility Club podcast: Practical Bravery - MUSICAL POLITICS! Can artists change the world? Should they? And should it be through their art, or through their activism? In this episode we're charting the course of a journeyman whose guitar has graced stages worldwide, and whose convictions have spotlighted the corridors of change. From the euphoric highs of indie rock stardom with his band Gomez, capturing hearts and the Mercury Prize in 1998, to the critical acclaim and UK Top 40 albums, his artistry has been undeniable. But it's his transition from artist to advocate and activist that makes him stand out. Elected as the Chair of the Ivors Academy and sitting on the council of the Performing Rights Society, he's not just playing tunes; he's setting the tempo for change. And in 2024 (after we recorded this interview), he's seeking a place in the mother of all parliaments. Our guest is rockstar, campaigner and - who knows - maybe a future prime minister, Tom Gray. ---------- “I always saw myself as a side man, I was the guy stood next to the guy, I loved writing songs. I never saw myself as being a leader.” Tom Gray via Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Gray_(activist) Tom Gray via LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/tom-gray-8a084328/?originalSubdomain=uk “Actually music wasn't my goal at all, hilariously, music was just my way of slowing down my racing brain.” "I actually had a choice: do I get on a plane and work for a senator, which is what I wanted to do — I wanted to be a speechwriter — or do I get Madonna's private jet? A ridiculous thing to choose between.” Gomez the band https://www.gomeztheband.com/ Gomez the band via Wikpedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gomez_(band) "By the time I was twenty-four or twenty-five I felt like I was on my third thing.” “I realised there were all kinds of problems facing my friends in music and a lot of the organisations representing them, although heartily trying, weren't necessarily getting there.” “I had this curious superpower which was that I understood politics, I'd grown up in politics, I knew loads of people in politics. If didn't do something, who was?" Featured Artists Coalition https://thefac.org/ The Ivors Academy (formerly British Association of Songwriters and Composers) https://ivorsacademy.com/ “I realised they didn't have a policy unit, helped them build a policy unit, helped them develop a public affairs strategy, actually employ people to do policy, which they didn't have. They were kind of shaking their fists in the air but not doing this stuff.” Musicians Union https://musiciansunion.org.uk/ “So, end of February 2020 I became a one man campaign, called Broken Record. And three months later the MU and Ivors Academy ran my more traditionally designed campaign called Fix Streaming.” “I was the guerrilla ground offensive, and then the air attack came later.” Broken Record campaign via Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_Record_campaign Mixmag article on the Broken Record campaign to fix streaming https://mixmag.net/feature/brokenrecord-music-industry-streaming-labels-artists-exploitation-equitable-renumeration Tom Gray's evidence via the UK Parliament https://committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/10156/pdf/ Twitter/X — @MrTomGray Instagram — https://instagram.com/automatoms “There's a series of levers, there's a series of relationships, there's a way to change the world, there's a path and, boringly, that's how you do it." "We got all major labels agreeing to forgive debt of artists who'd been in debt for more than twenty years, which was huge.” “We've got an industry-wide transparency agreement that is about to be signed.” “My entire thing is, hold the industry in a headlock and force them to improve. People will say government process takes you out of that campaigning mode, it takes you out of holding their feet to the fire. That's true but you've also got the institutional grip. They have to keep saying the right things, there's no easy exit for them.” Labour List — “Meet Labour Brighton Pavilion candidate Tom Gray as Eddie Izzard falls short” https://labourlist.org/2023/12/brighton-pavilion-candidate-tom-gray-labour-eddie-izzard/ “Music isn't the arts, are you mad? It's one of our most basic forms of communication!” Possibility Club interview with Crystal Asige https://www.alwayspossible.co.uk/podcast-practical-bravery-crystal-asige/ Pete Wishart of Runrig via Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Wishart "We are one of three music net exporters on the planet. We have this huge benefit of our language and our unbroken history of music learning, conservatories, the Beatles, you wouldn't have the Beatles without the Education Act, that's clear. Public policy changes the world. John Lennon going to art school was a profoundly important thing that needed to happen, in order for the world to experience the Beatles.” "Resilience is 100% the lesson of being a musician, because it's been pretty hard, the past twenty years, working in that sector. There's always someone who's making a buck out of everybody but for me I think these fights can be won, still. And if that's optimism, that's optimism.” ------ This episode was recorded in September 2023 Interviewer: Richard Freeman for always possible Editor: CJ Thorpe-Tracey for Lo Fi Arts For more visit www.alwayspossible.co.uk

The latest episode of the podcast which asks; do we really have to hug? And rub-a-dub?The Chart Music time sofa descends upon March of 1993, Pop-Crazed Youngsters – the Forgotten Nineties, if you will. A time where the only options available to The Kids were having their heads filled with rubbish by trampy Americans, or being exploited by Ian Beales in Hypercolor t-shirts who can't play real music and want you to take loads of drugs. Your panel – ligging their way around London, ensconced in an Isleworth love nest and dealing with the misery of Gym Knickers, respectively – look back upon this strange perineum between Rave and Britpop, and have a tentative sniff at itAs for Our Favourite Thursday Evening Pop Treat, it's currently weathering it's 27th crisis under the stewardship of Stanley Appell, two years removed from its Year Zero clearout. The good news is he's been given carte blanche to put on whoever he likes. The bad news is, he's only a few months away from his 60th birthday, and there's soon to be a new BBC1 controller in town who – according to rumour – is thinking about letting Janet Street Porter have a go. Musicwise, it's a reminder that everything is still up for grabs in the post-Neightnies musicsphere: Right Said Fred get the wind of BBC Star Power at their backs, which can be a bit uncomfortable when you've cut the arse out of your trousers. Lenny Kravitz is SuperMuso. After Some Rap, Brett Anderson gets dragged to the front of assembly to explain why he's let the school down by singing too violently. Then it's over to Hawaii to drop in on the Lower-Case Canadian, before she gets a shave off Cindy Crawford. Runrig make their TOTP debut, then Rage Against The Machine, fresh from getting Bruno Brookes suspended for a week, kick off the run of blipverts that passes for the Breakers section these days, which also takes in Bryan Ferry, The Jesus Lizard and Dead Madonna. Diana Ross and a Sexy Saxman appear on the set of a school play of Escape From New York, and we end with some sexy Belgian pinball action, all hosted by Mark Franklin, who was probably younger than you at the time, and still is. Sarah Bee and Simon Price join Al Needham for a rummage under the sewn-on cushion on the Mastermind chair of 1993, veering off on such tangents as being mithered by members of Suede and Elastica at a student disco, why all snack wafers of the Eighties sound like Bryan Ferry LP titles, the Lesbian Elephant, Jonny Sex-Cat and the Accessible Gamesdog, Paintballing with Ride, and Al's Secret Terror. Jeannette talks to renowned theatre director, Luke Kernaghan, on the ways in which he has harnessed the power of his creativity to unlock success, the value of connections and how networking has accelerated his journey of growth, and why following your passions is the key to lifelong happiness when it comes to your career choice. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is no substitute for authenticity, and you cannot truly be yourself until you've asked the internal questions required. Sometimes the forces that drive us are difficult to identify, and manifest themselves through instinct. We should always listen to our inner voice. If we are able to identify our passions, and forge a career in that sector, then working becomes a privilege, and fulfilment is far easier to achieve. Theatre in particular, thrives upon community. Those who are in the field, raise each other up and encourage support from all sides. BEST MOMENTS 'Your energy is incredible. You clearly love what you do' 'My journey was not linear' 'You don't go into theatre to make money!' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE.

Gary Innes joins Ewan Petrie for this weeks episode of "The Tracks That Take Us Back". A man of many talents, Gary has had a remarkable career. As a founding member of the multi-award winning Scottish group Manran, Gary has been at the forefront of the Scottish traditional music scene for over two decades. Winner of the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Award for instrumentalist of the year, music has taken Gary all over the world and he has performed in a staggering 30 countries world wide. Alongside Manran, Gary has carved out an extremely successful career in broadcasting. 2016 saw him take over from Robbie Shepherd to present "Take The Floor" on BBC Radio Scotland and in 2020, he was given his own show called "Your Requests". Speaking of Gary's achievements, it would be criminal not to mention his time as a professional shinty player. Gary is one of the few players to hold every senior medal in the game and won the famous Camanachd Cup with his team Fort William on 5 occasions. His iconic status in the game led to Runrig using an image of Gary in action on their 2007 album "Everything You See". Listen as Gary takes us on a whirlwind journey through some of his favourite career highlights, his childhood memories and the place he now calls "home". With an infectious spirit and a glowing personality, Gary will have you smiling from ear to ear as we discuss his choices on "The Tracks That Take Us Back".
In this week's edition of The Weekly Review, Johann Wald, Ben Cardew and Mar Vallverdú discuss Kanye West's announcement that he is running for President, while digging into the difficult and frequently painful cross over between music and politics, from Runrig to MGMT. In this Q&A for our negative emotions coaching journey, we look at Inner Power and Powerlessness: what to do to balance power and when to intervene in unhealthy conflict and toxic behaviours at home and work. We discover why powerlessness is at the root of all this toxicity and what we can do about it - for ourselves and for others. Firstly, Coach Julia Seal, looks at exactly what's happening in our brains when we're in relationships where power is abused, exploring what's happening whether we are Victims or Persecutors. This guides us to use the best response of all, taking The High Road, balancing the power. Here, we discover the magic of the whole thing: we need be the only ones to do this, no matter who is indulging in Contempt, Criticism, Blame, Defensiveness or Stonewalling! How to find our Inner, rather than external, Power leads us to a step-by-step process of building Inner Power and practicing it every day - how to coach our own powerlessness, using our Coaching Tools to support you. Then, Julia looks at powerlessness and what to do if you're a manager or HR and have to intervene to "sort out that difficult person". She explains how to intervene in unhealthy conflict effectively from a coach's perspective that includes some intriguing ideas: cleaning up the inside of your brain, getting yourself to neutral, activating your inner wisdom as well as the power of role-modeling and the art of invitation into change. You can end Kindergarten-like conflict behaviour! Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, Gandhi, Donald Rumsfeld, Socrates, Scottish band Runrig and South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission add further insight into this last episode on coaching our negative emotions, our unhappiness and how to FEEL better. " May you be Happy, May you be Free - there is no better time to coach together!" Keep it up!" Tom Cochran emailed: "Hi Mark, Tom C from the highlands of western Colorado. Just recently found your podcast from a post on my Clan’s Facebook page. Have listened to several now and find the diversity of music refreshing and matching my own musical tastes which are eclectic. I enjoy everything from classical, to musical theatre, classic rock, folk, and of course Celtic music in its many forms. My wife and I along with son Brendan and friend Jonathan make up Oran Mor. We have been playing a lot these past few months locally and are planning our first recording in the coming year. As a long time theatre geek ( presently directing Conor McPhearson’s Irish Drama “The Veil”) I am new to the music business. So I would appreciate any advice. You can check out our web page at oranmormusic.com. Favorite influences include, Dougie McIean, Runrig, Battlefield Band, Old Blind Dogs, Silly Wizard, Albannach, The Elders and the Chieftains. I am really liking the new groups your show is turning me onto; new fave Runa. I look forward to many hours of great music. Keep up the good work." Junya emailed: "hi. im from Japan. im a very casual listener, and i dont have the habit of checking the song titles and artists names, so i have no knowledge, but have been listening to your podcast for, probably more than 10 years. i felt like listening to such music in Christmas time in December, over 10years ago, (im not Christian and l am japanese living in Japan, so i dont have a chance to experience the Westerners' christmas festivity, but i always long to join their Christmas mood) and tried searching, then your website was the top result. somehow irish and celtic music sounds very nice to me even though im not a fan of any ethnic type of music very much. the song i liked from this Halloween podcast was The Rogue's Hellbound Sleigh, with the club music like beautiful and cool elements mixed in." Big Country special with Mark Brzezicki in conversation with David Eastaugh Big Country comprised Stuart Adamson (formerly of Skids, vocals/guitar/keyboards), Bruce Watson (guitar/mandolin/sitar/vocals), Tony Butler (bass guitar/vocals) and Mark Brzezicki (drums/percussion/vocals). Before the recruitment of Butler and Brzezicki an early incarnation of Big Country was a five-piece band, featuring Peter Wishart (later of Runrig and now a Scottish National Party MP) on keyboards, his brother Alan on bass, and Clive Parker, drummer from Spizz Energi/Athletico Spizz '80. Parker had approached Adamson to join his new band after the demise of Skids. Adamson auditioned Parker (1980) at The Members' rehearsal room in Ladbroke Grove, London and the next day was called on to play drums on demos for CBS Records at their Whitfield Street studios. The demos were produced by Adam Sieff and just featured Adamson, Parker and Watson. Adamson had asked bassist Dave Allen from Gang of Fourto join the band but he declined. Adamson asked Parker to join the band, which led to eight months of rehearsal in Dunfermline in a disused furniture warehouse. The culmination was a concert at the Glen Pavilion at Dunfermline and an interview with BBC Radio Scotland where the CBS Studio demos were utilised. The band then played live with Alice Cooper's Special Forces tour for two concerts in 1982 at The Brighton Centre. Butler and Brzezicki, working under the name 'Rhythm for Hire,' were brought in to play on "Harvest Home." They immediately hit it off with Adamson and Watson, who invited them to join the band.

Inspiration is a funny friend. It finds you and guides you. It takes you to strange and wonderful places. It introduces you to heroes. I started playing Celtic music in 1999... by accident. I had three "Celtic" songs in my song repertoire: "The Scotsman", "Irish Ballad" by Tom Lehrer, and an original Enya-esque song with nonsensical lyrics called "Lounging in La La Land". I was practicing on the South Mall at the University of Texas at Austin when red-haired gentleman asked if I'd like to perform at a Renaissance festival. As a Dungeons & Dragons nerd, I was so excited I asked my friend Andrew McKee to start a band with me. Soon the Brobdingnagian Bards found new Celtic music heroes and inspiration. For me, it was The Wolfe Tones, Christy Moore, The Irish Balladeers, and some random cassette that was called Irish Drinking Songs. That was my introduction to Celtic music. Those were my first Celtic music heroes. Later, I added Ed Miller, Serious Kitchen (featuring Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer), Dougie MacLean, The Elders, Gaelic Storm, Clandestine, and even Bing Crosby. So of course many of these you have heard on my podcasts. Who are your Celtic music heroes? Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast, the virtual Public House for Celtic culture and change through music. In this episode I talk with James Westland of Tobermory. Born in a castle near Stirling, James, or Seamus as we know him, grew up around Alloa before going to Uni in St Andrews and then headed off shore and came back to land where he studied Gaelic at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, in Skye. It was at Sabhal Mor that he met Moira, who later became his wife. Eventually they chose to settle on Mull where they live to this day with their family in Tobermory. Our conversation moves between Seamus’ love of geology and the land, and how that journey started for him in the Ochil Hills, how landscape gives off certain feelings, Gaelic music and culture, his working life here on Mull and the geological make up of our islands and why they are so interesting. At the very end we also talk about Seamus’ father in law, the late, much missed Duncan MacGilp. We also have a wee natter in Gaelic at one point in the conversation for a couple of minutes.
