Fix CPTSD Podcast | Psychology and Philosophy in Narcissistic Times with Richard Grannon
My hypothesis is that if we deliberately put humility back into the system, we do two things. One, we take away the natural conflicting element of the therapeutic process, the natural elements of conflict. There are two humans. There are two egos. They're in a room, and because of the context, it becomes like tennis. It becomes like boxing. It becomes like some competitive sport. Nobody means for it to be that way. It's just that, whether you're the coach or the therapist or the client in this scenario, the dumb shaved monkeys that we are, we kind of lean towards playing dominance games, whether we want to or not. That's just the way it goes. So before you know it, you're playing ping pong over your depression, you're playing tennis over your anxiety. You're in a boxing match with your coach, with your therapist, over the dynamics of the grieving process, or whether you're doing the right kind of work to help you to grieve for the death and the loss of your last relationship, as an example of a common thing that people would see a coach or counselor for. So number one, the humility takes away from that dynamic. It reminds us consciously and with intent, "Look, this is just a conversation between two adults. It's not surgery. I'm not under general anesthetic. Nobody can cut the anxiety out of me." So it kind of reminds us that it's like a Socratic process. It's like philosophy. In fact, we already know it's known that you can trace the roots of psychology back to philosophy. But this dynamic of two people talking, I mean is that not the essence of a philosophical method? Is that not like the Socratic method? You're basically debating with the hope that you're going to have a positive outcome. So as well as taking away from this ego versus ego fight, it also reminds us that this is not magic and this is just a conversation between two consenting adults, where it is presumed that we have the same goal in mind, which is to feel better at the end of it. Right? The second thing that I think bringing this level of humility in is, it kind of moves the ego out of the way, and when I say ego in this context, obviously it is implicit. I'm not talking about the healthy ego. I'm talking about that side of the self that clings to dominance, that wants to be right, that wants to be in charge, that wants to be in control, that secretly loathes the therapeutic process, secretly loathes the humbling of having to come and ask another adult for help, where the part of life that the ego, one part of the ego is going to be going, "You should be able to do that." And if we remind ourselves of our Sanskrit, that side of the ego is the ah Hum kaya. In Sanskrit, it was the ahamkara It is the ahamkara spoken of in Hinduism and Buddhism. That's the ego that we don't want. "Bliss lies in the feeling of gratitiude, for others, in giving without expecting anything in return." Brittney Hiller is a wife, massage therapist, yoga teacher, group facilitator, and spiritual creative; in addition to all of that she’s the author of a new children’s book, The Little Laughing Yogini. She is also one of the most joyful people I know. It turns out that it wasn't always that way. She wasn't always able to celebrate the small victories. She wasn't always able to recognize the "small signs" that were put in front of her to see. Brittney takes us on her journey that has brought her to an understanding that "[people] are more powerful than they believe they are." She reiterates that we need people in our lives to help us to overcome obstacles...we can't do it alone. Yoga is a path that changed Brittney's life. It all started with a high school dance class where she experienced yoga for the first time. Brittney said that from her first savasana (final resting pose), she was hooked. She had envisioned herself going away to an intensive in Hawaii to get her yoga teacher training certificate, but doors opened to enable her to get it locally. She found herself practicing yoga on her porch and in the silence the idea of the outdoor yogini came to her. She developed her own outdoor practice and quickly wanted to share it with others. Her dream of having a studio without walls became a reality as she began teaching outdoor classes on the dock at Theravista. At some point she realized that people who had yoga memberships were not going to give up their memberships to come play outside. She knew she had to find a way to offer her own style or genre of yoga. Enter laughter yoga. Brittney went to Atlanta to become certified in laughter yoga. She loved the child-like playfulness and the aerobic work out that comes from each class of laughter yoga. By receiving her certification she found her way back into studios. She found a way to incorporate both laughter and meditation into every practice. From laughter yoga, Brittney suddenly had another revelation regarding the next step to take on her path. Away on a romantic anniversary get-away in the woods, in the quiet stillness between waking and restfulness...she had a story come to her. Although she didn't want to get out of bed at 6 AM on vacation, she got up and wrote down the vision that was being told to her. From that very dreamy "download" birthed The Little Laughing Yogini, a children's book about a little girl who goes into the forest, meets her friends, teaches them laughter yoga and ultimately finds her bliss. The Little Laughing Yogini doll was created as a tactile for of the girl in the book to help children be both comfortable and comforted by the ideas in the book. Through each story that Brittney tells, we see there is a recurring theme of dropping the hustle and the direction comes in the silence. "Bliss lies in the feeling of gratitude for others, in just giving without expecting anything in return." Brittney has found other creative ways to share her message through forms such as Chair Yoga Classes, Reiki Infused Yoga, Little Yoga Playshops, and Monday Morning Meditations to make yoga and meditation accessible to everyone. All along she had been asking for signs that she was moving in the right direction and one by one she received the...mostly in an entirely different form than she had imagined. She encourages others to "Get aware...and stop trying so hard to find answers" they will come in the stillness. Brittney closes out the episode with an incredible story of giving. She talks about the greatest gift she has ever given and how it enabled her to realize that true bliss is only found in unconditional giving. She shares a moving and vulnerable story of self-realization and taking responsibility for the events that are handed to us. A Simple Change that Brittney recommends is: Practice Self-Love by daily looking in the mirror and telling yourself "I love you"...until you believe it is true. Create that "soul connection." Yet another episode of inspiring stories and full of loving wisdom from the simple changes that shift the way we look at the world and the impact we create. In this episode, we chat with Author Susan Young on the Law of Attraction, and how to allow more abundance in your life. Guest Bio: When I learned many years ago that we are creating our own realities with the thoughts we think, I was eager to share this information with others. And, I wanted to become an amazingly deliberate creator! Yet, trying merely to think more positively wasn't creating the results that I knew were possible and I felt stuck in my current circumstances. I had been successful at everything else I had tried, including graduating from Harvard Law School, practicing corporate law and taking great care of my family, and I knew I could find a way to take a more systematic approach to this Allowing business. I read about and tried every Law of Attraction process I could find and determined what really worked and what didn’t work for me. I realized that trying a variety of processes to raise my vibration whenever I remembered just wasn't effective enough. It was then that I realized that we all need ritual, a system of sorts, when it comes to creating deliberately, a system to keep us on track and to raise our vibration to a higher set point. I found that the combination of making some basic commitments to myself and performing two simple daily rituals began to create dramatic results in my life. It is this simple system of two daily rituals, which forms the basis of the course and ebook “How to Allow,” that has created dramatic results for readers. I received more wonderful proof of the effectiveness of this simple system by having the ebook/course "How to Allow," recognized as Best of Books on Law of Attraction for 2012 and chosen as a Nominee for Best of Books on Law of Attraction for 2015. "How to Allow" has also been featured as a highly recommended book by Law of Attraction Magazine in 2015. In addition to writing the "How to Allow" course and e-book, I publish articles on Allowing at www.howtoallow.net, provide individual coaching, and am a contributor to Madamesque Magazine as well as a number of other blogs. I have also appeared on Blog Talk Radio and Law of Attraction Radio on the subject of Allowing. I have been recommended as a top Law of Attraction Coach by Law of Attraction Magazine (2015). Coaching has become my true passion and I'm grateful to be able to share what I have learned with others.
