In Mirages of Reform: The Politics of Elite Protectionism in the Arab World (Cornell UP, 2025), Steve L. Monroe argues that geopolitics and social connections between state and capital underpin the Arab world's uneven trade policies. Despite decades of international pressure, neoliberal trade policy reform in the Arab world has been varied, selective, and often ineffective. Neoliberal trade policies have not deepened international trade in many of the region's markets. This book explains why. When the region's regimes have strong support from global powers and strong social connections to the industrial elite, they engage in extensive but deceptive trade policy reform. Behind an edifice of neoliberal trade policies, neopatrimonial forms of protectionism like tax evasion and noncompetitive procurement shield the socially connected from international competition and obstruct actual trade liberalization. Industrialists are less trustful of regime promises of neopatrimonial protectionism after reform when they have weak social connections to their regime and their regime has low support from global powers. They are more likely to defend existing protectionist policies under these conditions, resulting in less trade policy reform. Drawing on interviews, firm- and industry-level data, and evidence from Jordan to Morocco, Mirages of Reform reveals how international and domestic factors interact to shape the Arab world's rugged trade policy terrain. Insightful and well researched, this book imparts important lessons and warnings about the repercussions of economic reform in the region. Steve L. Monroe is Assistant Professor of Political Science at the National University of Singapore. He is a scholar of development, with a primary focus on the Arab world. Monroe's scholarship examines two of the region's most pressing developmental challenges: limited economic integration, and gender inequality. Learn more about your ad choices. In today's conversation, we received wisdom and insight from Dr. Steve Porter about all things spiritual formation and transformation – in personal, pastoral and church contexts. Steve's work at the intersection of philosophy, theology and psychology means that he brings multilayered insight into the conversation around growth and transformation. Shaped and informed by the spirituality of Paul and the insight of folks like Dallas Willard and Eugene Peterson, Steve reminds us of the spiritual realities available to us as persons in Christ. He encourages us to be aware of God's presence, engaging in spiritual practices as windows that open ourselves to God. He also shares how we can internalize the love of God and how we as the church can support one another in making the invisible love of God visible and tangible, especially if we have struggled to experience that love in human relationships. We're excited that Steve will be joining us at Regent in the summer to teach a class on Cultivating Formation-Minded Pastors and Churches (July 21-25). We'd love for you to join us!BioDr. Steven L. Porter is the Senior Research Fellow and Executive Director of the Martin Institute for Christianity and Culture at Westmont College. He is also an affiliate professor of theology and spiritual formation at Biola University's Institute for Spiritual Formation and Rosemead School of Psychology. Dr. Porter earned his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Southern California under the mentorship of Dallas Willard and holds an M.Phil. in philosophical theology from the University of Oxford. His academic work focuses on Christian spiritual formation, the doctrine of sanctification, and the integration of psychology and theology. Additionally, he serves as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Spiritual Formation and Soul Care.Publications ReferencedSteven L. Gregory shares how he built his brand on the foundation of family values and entrepreneurial grit. Following his passion for coffee, he launched his first café in New York City in 2006 - with a focus on quality, innovation, and authentic customer experiences, Gregory's Coffee has grown into a beloved chain that still carries the heart and soul of a family business.Key Takeaways:• Schatzy and Jimmy touch on Toast Point of Sale (POS) system. A user-friendly and highly recommended POS system for restaurants, referring to it as the "Apple of point of sale.”• Brewing up some grounds-breaking news: Gregory's Coffee is expanding nationwide with Simon Property Group.• Gregory discusses the new partnership with Simon Property Group and the opening of 15 stores in key mall locations, including Southern California, Washington state, Texas, Florida, and Pennsylvania - "They were looking for a brand that they thought could play well across the country, not a regional player, not too niche, something that could be catering to, you know, high-end boutique, you know, type of concept."• Jimmy recognizes a strategic and fitting collaboration, as Simon is actively working to enhance the mall experience by integrating food and beverage (F&B) options to attract customers back into physical retail spaces.• Gregory discusses leveraging technology like Chowly and Toast to enhance their delivery services, making the process more seamless and efficient both for their team and customers. Jimmy touches on the importance of "return on time”, and asks about the role of AI and automation in Gregory's Coffee's operations. Does Gregory envision a future where robots could be brewing coffee?• Committed to innovation, authenticity, and creating unique, high-quality products helps Gregory's Coffee stand out in a crowded market.• Gregory talks about "passion and grit" as Gregory's Coffee expands and his hands-on approach, ensuring that every new store opening embodies the same energy and authenticity that started the business.• In "Talking Back," Gregory flips the script, asking Schatzy and Jimmy about their current interests and focus within the intersection of technology, investing, and hospitality. Gregory mentions Steve L's work with "kernel and flippers", asking them what is exciting them the most in this rapidly evolving industry.Gregory, Schatzy, and Jimmy enjoy a lively session with games like "What's Hot and Not," "The Spice is Right," and "Trivia Tuesday”.

I was really interested in this workshop simply because its not a topic that gets a lot of discussion, this is led by three very popular speakers. We have Steve L from Tennessee, Sharon C from California and lastly Bob D from Nevada. They do a really great job on this topic and there are even a few good laughs along the way. This ends a bit abruptly but it was the end, the last little bit got cut off. Recorded in 2015 at the 40th Atlanta Roundup, it is an hour and twenty min. in length. My name is Steve L. McEvil, and I am THE GREATEST SUPERVILLAIN IN THE WORLD! Or…I will be. It's hard to take over the planet when you still have a bedtime. Right now, my grandpa Tiberius McEvil is teaching me how to pull off my nefarious schemes. Though lately someone has been doing the job for me. These weird stones have appeared in town. Professor Stinger won't stop droning on about wormholes. And no one is more villainous than my new neighbor Vic Turry. That guy is just so…NICE! Barf. Even Sierra, who rarely looks up from her geology books, is impressed by his good guy routine. But I'll show them all. No one can outsmart Steve L. McEvil! (Yeah, yeah, I know it rhymes.) About The Art of Fatherhood Podcast The Art of Fatherhood Podcast follows the journey of fatherhood. Your host, Art Eddy talks with dads from all around the world where they share their thoughts on fatherhood. Please leave a review wherever you listen to podcasts.
