Surly Brewing founder Omar Ansari wanted to make great beer. The first beer was Bender, an oatmeal brown ale. That opened the door. Furious, an aggressively hopped IPA, kicked it in, transforming the way Minnesota thought about craft beer. Word spread, especially among the Twin Cities craft beer community. Best-of lists and Brewery of the Year honors followed. As this idea started to gain momentum, Omar was perplexed by a Prohibition-era Minnesota law that prevented production breweries from selling their beer onsite. He worked with Minnesota legislators, and the vocal, passionate Surly Nation, to change that law. The so-called “Surly Bill” passed on May 24, 2011, and scores of new breweries and taprooms bloomed. Minnesota's proud brewing history, unchanged for so long, finally got another chapter, one that's still being written. In December 2014, the Brooklyn Center taproom poured its last pint and Minneapolis' Prospect Park neighborhood officially became home to the Surly Destination Brewery. Ween is back, baby, and for this episode we're covering the Surly Brewing Company show from August 21st. Although we couldn't be there, our friend Cody made the trip, and we're just tickled pink that he agreed to join us to discuss the show. Cody has been a fan of our podcast for a few years now, and in that time he's shown himself to be quite a Weenhead, but also just a genuinely nice guy. When we heard he was going to the show, it was a no brainer to see if we could make this conversation happen. Now, what made this evening especially amazing is that it was Cody's first show. He became a fan something like ten years ago, but through the hiatus, and then the pandemic, he had just not been able to get to see Ween until now. But man, what a trip he made. Hailing from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, it took him two flights and many many hours to get up to Minneapolis, for a weekend that he'll not soon forget. I don't want to say too much here, because you really should hear Cody himself talk about his first show. Besides the concert, we also chatted about Cody's artwork; he's committed to the old school, doing amazing work with paper and pencil. If you're in Ween groups on Facebook, you'll surely run into his work at some point. It's brown to say the least. You should check his work out and give him some love, ‘cuz it is awesome! Shane and Cody also discuss their shared love of Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart, among other musical acts. Relive your first show by listening to Cody talking about his! Last Man Standing is the American reimagining of Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo (1961), though it wasn't the first reinterpretation. The Spaghetti Western A Fist Full of Dollars (1964) had tread this ground before—a man with no name caught up in the exacerbating violence of warring gangs. Unlike the Italian-produced film, Last Man Standing was given Kurosawa's blessing. Unfortunately, it can't replicate either of its predecessors results. Directed by Walter Hill, it's a movie that struggles mightily to present a coherent story. Sure, it revolves around Irish and Italian mobsters vying for bootlegging dominance in a remote Texas town, but what happens around that is often nonsensical. That is no fault of the director's. Last Man Standing, like many other films we've covered, fell victim to the demands of the studio. Nearly 30 minutes of its original runtime was sent to the editing room floor. Its lack of connective tissue is made evident by John Smith's (Bruce Willis) forced bits of narration. The muddled narrative no doubt hurt its critical reception. With 30 reviews, it sits at 37% on Rotten Tomatoes. It's also the biggest financial failure of our "Hops and Bruno Flops" series. On a budget of $67 million, it grossed just $47.3 million. Yet, and this may be a stretch, some now consider it a cult classic. That is all credit to its gratuitous violence. Smith, the pseudo-hero of the film, dishes out lead in hefty amounts—rarely stopping to breather or even reload. As ludicrous as the gunplay is at times, it does make Last Man Standing a moderately enjoyable endeavor. Now sit back, sip on a cool Furious IPA from Surly Brewing Co., and tip your hat to the undertaker! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Mayor McCheese are running moonshine through Mexico with Colt pistols in hand! Joss-stache League (Justice League) is a cobbled together mess. It's the Frankenstein's monster of movies. I wish that were an understatement, but, sadly, it is not; and though it bears Zack Snyder's name in the credits, it is not his movie. According to Fabian Wagner, the original cut's cinematographer, up to 90% of what they shot is not in it. That's right, folks: In under two months, Joss Whedon basically reshot the entire thing. Why? Well, the answer to that is long, winding, and even filled with heartbreak. To keep it brief, the studio was no longer in support of Zack's vision. When Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice failed to break a $1 billion, a series of decisions were made. In retrospect, many of them were stupid. And Justice League paid the bulk of the price for them. It's a mishmash of competing interests and an attempt to please both critics and fans with something more similar to the MCU. That desperation backfired. At the time of its release, Justice League had the lowest opening of any DCU film ($93+ million). It would go on to gross $657.9 million—also the lowest for a DCU film at the time— against a production budget of $300 million. Deadline Hollywood reported that the film lost the studio around $60 million, scuttling their new plans and throwing DC's big screen universe into further turmoil. It also sits at just 40% on Rotten Tomatoes with 395 reviews—a modest improvement over its predecessor and certainly not worth the hack job they put to it. Now, despite of all you have just read, this movie is somehow still watchable—even if you are forced to look away as a certain CGI'd mustache burns a hole through your TV. So, sit back, enter a new dimension with a Mapping the Multiverse Hazy IPA from Surly Brewing Co., and unite the Seven! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, Chumpzilla, Mayor McCheese, and special guest Mario Francisco Robles—the Fanboy himself—are struggling to process Henry Cavill's face! (1:33:59) The "Something's Definitely Bleeding" Trivia Challenge – I challenge the field to questions about the movie, as well as the movement it inspired. Bullet to the Head is a throwback to a simpler time; an era when men were men, off-color jokes were plentiful, and the amount of heroic quips was only surpassed by the body count. Serving as Sylvester Stallone's late mid-life crisis, Bullet to the Head is an unapologetic homage to the action films of yesteryear. This makes all the more sense when you consider that director Walter Hill perfected this template with 48 Hrs., a mismatched buddy classic. Some may argue that formula doesn't necessarily work in 2012, but they—like the co-hosts of this pod—are wrong. This film is glorious. Pumped full of violence, it's an adrenaline shot to your heart. And by the looks of it, Stallone also knows all about hypodermic needles. Literally, he appears to have overdosed on human growth hormone. No 66-year-old man should be as vascular as he is in this movie. Anyway, it did inexplicably flop. It earned just under $22 million on a budget of $40 million—perhaps a signal that the action days of yore, like Stallone, were past their prime. But boo to that BS notion! Bullet's wanton carnage will put a little pound in your pencil! So sit back, get feisty with an Axe Man IPA from Surly Brewing Co., and pour yourself a double shot of Bulleit Bourbon! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla are busting skulls at a Turkish Bathhouse in nothing but our Underoos! The most beloved and influential American IPAs of the last decade are being churned out in record volume, yet the juicy beers are getting all the hype while diluting the meaning of the very style. We reignite our love for six of the country’s most-revered IPAs that are now all available in grocery stores all over Chicagoland - and we do it in the dark. This blind tasting will once-and-for-all determine our completely arbitrary opinions about the best IPA that even your weird coworkers have heard of - and we are totally surprised by the results. Because we’re Chicagoans, we also spend a lot of time playing, “Is this Anti-Hero??” and expose our general ineptitude at guessing beers. Craig makes a bad suggestion for March Madness, Ryan tries to break the Baba Yaga’s Craig curse, and we talk about our favorite Aerosmith-inspired shooting game. Oh and there’s misheard 311 lyrics, a simple request about a Frasier shirt, a fact check for the English majors, and our memories of sitting out in the Quad. And all this content is stuffed into the shortest episode we’ve released in over a year, so turn your playback speed back down to “1x” and enjoy!
