Don't overlook this Retail Corner episode featuring Joel Bines, the bestselling author of 'The Metail Economy'. Join us as he explores the consumer-centric paradigm and strategies for business transformation. About our guest, Joel Bines: Veteran change agent Joel Bines has a 30-year track record of designing and delivering complex performance improvement programs for consumer-facing companies worldwide. Before his retirement in December 2022, after nearly 20 years with the company, Bines was Managing Director and global co-leader of the Retail Practice at the business consultancy AlixPartners. He is regarded as one of the world's leading operational strategists focused on value creation in consumer-driven businesses. Bines receives high praise for his ability to explain complex issues engagingly. His passion is the consumer, and he is tireless in his quest to help all businesses that interact with consumers better understand the changing landscape and, importantly, structure operations to serve ever-increasing customer demands while still delivering profitable growth. Bines is widely known and respected by investors, boards, and executives, and his network is extensive. He has an unimpeachable reputation for honesty, direct communication, and integrity - a combination that allows him to be especially effective in complex, high-stress situations. Bines excels in the space between ambition and achievement, the execution space, where even well-intended effort often underachieves desired results. He is an expert at partnering with CEOs and their teams to identify the root causes of this gap to results and then applying focused effort to the things that truly matter to deliver each company's ambition (and often slaying myths of what does not). Bines is also the author of the international best-selling McGraw Hill book “The Metail Economy,” which has been lauded for identifying the key drivers behind today's changing consumer landscape and the implications for businesses that serve them. “The Metail Economy” makes the case for a radical power shift between companies and their customers and explains how this happened and what to do about it. Bines also offers clear takeaways in the form of his “6 Strategies for Transforming Your Business to Thrive in the Me-Centric Consumer Revolution,” as well as his pragmatic advice on what to do on Monday morning. The book has won praise from some of the world's leading consumer companies, such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Best Buy, LVMH, Coca-Cola, J Crew, Neiman Marcus, Frito Lay, KIND Bars, Cinemark, Walgreens, and many more. He is also a frequent contributor to top-tier media, and his voice is regularly featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, FT, NPR Marketplace, Bloomberg, CNBC, Forbes, and many others. Bines is a “lunch pail and hard hat” guy. His performance ethic can be summed up with two words: outwork everyone. After graduating from Bates College in Lewiston, ME, with a degree in philosophy, he held a series of jobs with distressed consumer companies facing deep challenges. His early success turning around those companies led him to Harvard Business School, where he earned an MBA with distinction. A chance meeting while at HBS with turnaround expert Jay Alix led him to eventually join AlixPartners, where he worked for nearly two decades and helped build a preeminent retail and consumer consulting practice. Bines currently resides in Dallas, TX, where he runs his own investment and strategic advisory firm and regularly advises ambitious executives, boards, and investors. He currently sits on the board of Dormify, the leader in college and small-space styling, the board of The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Foundation in Washington, DC, and is a trustee of TITAS/Dance Unbound.

Consumers today are more conscious than ever about the brands they use. They see their dollars as a way to support causes and companies they believe in, and use them to make their voice heard in the marketplace. Retail thought leader Joel Bines noticed this movement and defines it in his new book, The Metail Economy. Joel is an expert business leader from AlixPartners who has a track record of successfully improving the performance of retailers, wholesalers, and service companies in the Retail space. What is Metail? Joel defines it as the inversion of the traditional power dynamics of retail, resulting in the consumer being in charge. In his book, Joel argues that businesses need to embrace this power change and become self-aware in order to survive in the new status quo. In this episode, Joel and Jim discuss The Metail Economy, trends they've seen, and the role of business within social and political movements. It was a great pleasure to chat to a terrific and inspiring young lad, Patrick Bines on Sports Legends with Bevo recently. Patrick was a promising young basketballer and represented Australia at junior level, played for the Melbourne Tigers Basketball in the SEABL then made the transition to AFL where he was picked up by West Coast Eagles as a rookie in 2018. Whilst playing in the WAFL he sustained a horrific head injury which ended his footy career. We spoke about how Patrick turned things around after going through some tough times as a result of the injuries he sustained and where to now for his career going forward. Thanks so much to Patrick for his time and for being so open and honest about his journey and to the team at PodBooth for putting this great video together.

Six Ingredients for Transforming Your Business to Thrive Shep Hyken interviews Joel Bines, managing director and global co-head of the Retail Practice at AlixPartners and the author of The Metail Economy. They discuss how to meet the growing expectations of the smart and savvy Me-centric customer. Top Takeaways: Joel Bines shares the six ingredients for transforming your business to thrive in this Metail economy: curation, customization, category expertise, cost, convenience, community. 1. Curation: The art of defining and producing a set of experiences (products, locations, digital, physical, etc.) so that the person thinks that someone picked all of these things just for them. 2. Customization: Consumers want to have a say in the products they want to spend their money on. Because of technology, it's never been easier to customize some experience component. That doesn't mean it has to be bespoke. You can provide the illusion of customization by finding things that give the consumer the sense that they are customizing something. Add one or two more, and you're fine. You don't have to build one thing at a time. 3. Category expertise: Expertise means that any question that customers might have is easily answered by the person they are talking to. 4. Cost: If you are going to use cost as a competitive advantage, then it has to be the lowest cost at all times because consumers are smart and savvy with technology. It's easy to find a lower cost, if there is one. 5. Convenience: The question you need to ask when thinking that convenience is an advantage is, “Who is it convenient to?” Too often, company executives start with convenience for the company. If the answer is not “convenient for the customer,” then you're doing convenience wrong. 6. Community: If you're going to build a community of people, you have to make sure that every part of your organization is set up to serve that community. It is very difficult to build a community, but losing a community is very easy. Quote: "Customers' tolerance and friction level for customer experience is lower than ever. Customers know what they want, and if the companies they do business with cannot give it to them, they go somewhere else." About: Joel Bines is a managing director and global co-head of the Retail Practice at the business consulting firm AlixPartners. Preservation through Sanctification by Elder Bines Bwali
Steve Carpenter of Yakima Chief Hops and Joe Catron of Yakima Chief Ranches welcome you back to another season of Baseball, Beer & Bines! Tim Pauly of Broken Bat Brewing in Milwaukee hopped on the podcast to talk about the history of Broken Bat and how the Milwaukee Brewers' season is playing out. They're talking about the new "sticky substance" rule, the hop growing season's progress and much more on this first episode of the new season!
