Ep. 52 Tanya Markul: Finding The Courage To Be Ourselves

Conversations on Living

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 6, 2021 49:32

Of all our relationships, sometimes the most difficult one we have is with ourselves. After all, no one experiences our mistakes, traumas, struggles and challenges more deeply and more vividly than we do. In a society that is fuelled by our dissatisfaction, that needs us to conform to near-impossible standards, it can be difficult to like ourselves enough to fan our own flames – or at the very least to be at peace with who we are. And after twelve months of a near-global lockdown in response to the global pandemic, we have never been face-to-face with ourselves more than we are now. How do we find the courage to face all that we need to face, to let go of all that we need to let go of, and to nurture all that we need to nurture, so that we can step into who we came here to be? Tanya Markul is the author of the hugely successful The She Book. Her beautiful poetry and prose gives the reader the permission they need to turn and face that which is most daunting – themselves. And in doing so it frees them to recognise all that they are, all that they are not, and all that they can be. As she writes: “The wall between me feeling stuck and my dream life is thinner than I think. And it doesn't take a giant leap to get there, but a gentle adjustment of perspective, a small step in the other direction.” And as we discuss, sometimes that small step can be as simple as taking a breath. On unraveling blocks in the body, the healing that wants to come through you, and the merits of staying curious. Andi Keh is an artist and natural fabric dyer in Brooklyn, NY. She is the illustrator of The Moon Deck. Born and raised in Southern Indiana, her love for creating began as early as she can remember. Painting murals on her bedroom walls and drawing after school was her favorite pastime. At 20, she traveled and worked in fashion abroad in Italy and France, then followed her heart to NYC, where she received a degree in Textile/Surface Design in 2005. She married her love, William Keh, and became a full time mama of Ruby and West. She worked from home while also pursuing spiritual practices and yoga studies. She was certified as a Vinyasa yoga teacher through Yogamaya NYC, and taught family and private yoga classes. Divine timing led her to co-create The Moon Deck in 2014 — a world renowned oracle set of 44 illustrated cards + guidebook. Graphite drawing, watercolor painting and natural fabric dyeing with flowers and plant extracts are her mediums and techniques of choice. As this podcast goes to air, we have been moving through the moon and the start of spring, a time of new beginnings and fresh starts.  This cosmic time is clearing the way in your energetic body for the season of Aries, which revolves around the self and your soul's purpose.  It will offer you a time to work on the relationships you have with all the many different aspects of yourself.  The inner work you do now will set the foundation for spring and the months ahead. Mercury retrograde will move out, so make sure you tap into the Pisces energy of going deep to those spiritual contracts with yourself.   It's easy to stay stuck in the past, but when you work on understanding the deeper parts of who you are, you will find it so much easier to move forward as we open up to the spring season.  We'll be talking more about forgiveness and compassion of past “mistakes as we enter into the full moon”.  All of this I talk about on my Energy Focus for the Week, which you can find the replay on my website  or tune into on Sundays on Facebook and Instagram live.  I offer information about the cosmos, how it affects your energy and we align our focus, energetically, together.  We look at the cards for guidance for the week. And, you can bring your questions!  Join me.  If you aren't in my Facebook group, the Empowered Sprit Circle, I would love to invite you in.  Coming up this Spring, I will be offering Akashic Clearings only in the group. The link is in the show notes or click here.   With so much stress in the world, finding tools and techniques to rest, to pause and be aware of our energy is so vital. Having a spiritual practice in this overwhelmingly busy time period in history is crucial, for both our health and mental sanity. Download my free guide to help you set up your own Spiritual Practice. You can find it on my website TerriAnnHeiman.com. The Equinox works with balance. Your perceived, internal balance is actually a balance between the many relationships you have within yourself. This beginning of Spring is offering you the time to look within. It's important to understand all of these relationships to fully grasp where your inner peace originates. Each relationship needs to be nourished for you to feel content within your life. What is you relationship to you mental chatter? What is your relationship to you emotions? What is your relationship to your body? To your Spirit? Is it in balance? Is it one sided? As you come into your practice, these are the things to balance, to realize, to understand, first and foremost with yourself and then you can move out to relationships with others. There are many ways in which you can create balance in yourself.  Libra is an air sign and reminds us that our breath, and the way we are breathing, helps create equanimity in our energetic field. Therefore, breath work is our first tool in maintaining energetic balance. Your  breath is also a clue to when our inner equilibrium has been thrown off. You may notice when you are feeling unbalanced emotionally your breathing becomes shallow or you may even hold your breath. Libra reminds us that maintaining balance is also a focus on the breath. The more you practice working with your breath, the more you will be able to catch yourself before the imbalance occurs. The Meditation for this podcast is a yogic breath, Alternating Nostril Breathing, that balances the right and left sides of the brain, bringing balance for the spring energies to the energetic body. Begin in a comfortable seated position with your spine upright. Using your right hand, place your thumb on your right nostril and your ring finger on your left nostril. The index and middle finger will rest on your forehead. You can also hold your right elbow with your left hand for support. Start by closing your left  nostril and breathing only through your right side for a count of four. Hold both sides and your breath for a count of five then hold your right nostril exhaling only through the left for a count of five. Then reverse it. Breathe in through the left, hold, then Exhale through the right- all for a count of 5. This is one complete round which we continue to repeat for 5 minutes. Meditation is essential! The card that came forward this week for the Shaman Oracle was the Blade. Time to cut through the old stuff. Time to cut the old cords. Time to cut that new path for you. So as I go to close, I leave you with this poem from The She book by Tanya Markul to remind you as you open up to your Spring Intentions. Don't let anyone stop your dreams or judge your path. You have a right to shine your light from your spirit. #41 Those who find her crazy Are too sane for the magic of the stars  The wisdom of the trees And the power of her howl on a full moon. Howl  Shine It is the season to awaken. Thanks again for listening! To your Spirit! Terri Join the Empowered Spirit Circle on Facebook. Meet Tanya “I am a child of extremes, raised with poison, steeped in possibility between an orchard and giant maple trees, drawn to flowers, and re-birthed by a frigid, roaring sea.” —Thug Unicorn Tanya Markul’s path is one of the poetess, intuitive and wounded healer. An unwanted child, she was raised on barren soil of shame, guilt and overwhelming self-hatred. From the womb, her inner navigation was tainted by an ancestry of addiction, instability, abuse and fear. Her journey to self-heal and to become ready to guide others has taken many arduous paths, risks, and harrowing rebirths. She is a guide to the other side of pain. A key and wisdom keeper. A creative midwife. An enchanting storyteller and quirky rule-breaker. She is a tree lover and fairy spirit. Imagination is her wand, the dreamworld her guide and Nature her map. Tanya is dedicated to helping others heal by holding sacred space for their stories, and by unlocking the impossibility of shape-shifting their pain into creative, soul-led, healing purpose. Her medicine beckons the brave curiosity to look within, brings a sense of humour to cracked surfaces, unveils the beauty of hidden authenticity, and conjures the revolutionary courage to love, accept, and empower oneself in this lifetime. Tanya heals with words, the unseen world, sensitivity and vulnerability. May we all live a beautiful life of magic, mystery, inner peace and freedom. The Alchemy is in the Conversation Look, boo. Healing is f*cking messy. It’s alienation. It’s detachment. It’s bat shit crazy. It’s jet black darkness. It makes you ache for the void and mundane. You want to quit everything, but you can’t. You won’t. Not now. No baby, not ever. Because even though it aches the mother of all aches, you’ve changed. Underneath all that bullshit, there you are. Brand new. Born again. An angel who’s woken up to their cosmic mission. And you ain’t ever going back. And, there’s more like you out there. We’re waking up right next to you in the dark, wild one. So don’t worry about fixing any part of you and let your wicked shambles raise the goddamn roof on this whole things. ~ THUG UNICORN by TANYA MARKUL I just…how can you read that and not feel empowered? Tanya and I (and so many others) are testaments to how we can be empowered by the healing work EVEN WHEN it’s grotesque and messy and you’re dying a million deaths and it’s lonely and isolating. Because when you have the courage to look at your circumstances – /no matter how shitty or painful or whatever/ – and not try to force it away? POWERFUL. MAGICAL. LIKE, WHOA. I’ve known of Thug Unicorn for a few years. A) How can you not love and follow a name like Thug Unicorn? and B) the words are always exactly the ones you need to hear. But I never thought of the person behind the name…not until a few pages into THE SHE BOOK and I knew this was a kindred, wounded, soulful, healing spirit. I knew there were layers and layers upon stories and stories behind the healing words. I could feel the pain seeping through the pages…and I wanted to know this person. The person behind the very cool name, Thug Unicorn. On a whim, I sent an email…call it a moment of bravery because…who am I? I sent the email into the ether with no expectations because I don’t do disappointment well. And to my surprise and utter delight (seriously – the happy dance was #offthecharts) I received an email the next morning…yes. OUR CONVERSATION WAS MAGICAL. Two wounded spirits in the midst of their own messy healings (because always healing) coming together to share an intimate conversation. Listen in as we talk about: The story behind calling herself an unwanted child. Maybe not every aspect of ourselves needs to be healed….take a deep breath with me…how freeing is that?!? Why do we give people the power to place us into a category? Oh – look at her…she must be so happy because she smiles all the time. Ways we can we creatively express our pain. And screw happiness! How ‘bout we go for empowered instead? How motherhood (and not necessarily wanting to be a mom because hello – shitty childhoods) re-opens some mama wounds BUT helps move us forward in our healing. Life can either get you down, or you can teach life a thing or two. This is the spirit that our guest, Tanya Markul, a.k.a. Thug Unicorn, carries around with her in all that she does. Her message to the darkness? “Eat. My. Stardust.” Tanya is no stranger to pain and trauma. Time after time, life handed her almost too much to handle. Most people would crumble under the weight. Not this Unicorn! Instead of letting her life's tragedies defeat her, she used the pain to propel her towards the light.
