Friend of the pod and glamor-trash gay man-about-town Billy Weston joins Torie and Maggie to unpack three of the sexiest, messiest, and most titillatingly trashy erotic thrillers of the 1990s.
Jesse Spano trades textbooks for stripper poles to dance her way through a 24/7, nipple tweaking tantrum in Paul Verhoeven's infamous, eternally iconic TRASHterpiece, SHOWGIRLS (1995). Neve Campbell and Denise Richards, whose aquatic escapades inaugurated a million Millennial boners, continue to masterfully mindf**k us in WILD THINGS (1998). Sick of bad sex and surmised of murder, smoky siren Linda Fiorentino is suspected by CSI's OG sunglasses guy, David Caruso, in William Friedkin's convoluted, surprisingly sterile flop, JADE (1995).

Send us a textKatie and Bridget travel to NJ to go to church (Mom - aren't you proud!?) as they rewatch: Dogma! It's a movie all about how religion is kinda crazy but also God is totally real and she IS Alanis Morissette! Come along as we meet Bethany, a woman losing her faith who gets visited by a bunch of mystical religious figures and told that she's the chosen one! Casual! When a church in New Jersey somehow has the power to cleanse everyone of their sins, two fallen angels go on an evil quest to clear themselves and reenter heaven. While that may sound nice, it would actually bring about the apocalypse - and somehow this is Bethany's problem! We've got angels, profits, apostles, muses, demons, and two stoners (Jay and Silent Bob) all in this anti-religious but also somehow religious movie which makes us ask the ultimate moral question... Are Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in love with each other or what!? Released in 1999, it was written and directed by Kevin Smith and stars an insane cast including Linda Fiorentino, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Janeane Garofalo, Jason Lee, Alan Rickman, Jason Mewes, Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, George Carlin, and Alanis Morissette.

What if you could commit a crime with a perfect plan? Linda Fiorentino shows us exactly how in the 1994 erotic thriller The Last Seduction. A tale of twists and turns gets sexy yet dangerous as this neo-noir unfolds. This movie has a pretty strong audience score. Zach and Amanda discuss why this may be, with questioning perhaps why that may have been a bit too over zealous. Welcome back to the Video Store! Valentine's Day is almost upon us and if you're here looking for movie selections instead of out buying flowers or making dinner reservations, then sir or madam, I salute you. For this week's episode of the show I've picked four movies that feature unconventional relationships. After browsing the stores aisles looking for this week's film recommendations, I ended up rewatching all four of these movies (a couple of which I hadn't seen in decades) and for the most part they have all aged well. Harold and Maude (1971)Harold is a young adult obsessed with death, while Maude is a 79-year-old woman infatuated with life. The two share a hobby in common — attending the funerals of strangers — and soon this odd couple forms a close relationship. Wikipedia describes this film as a “romantic black comedy drama,” which only begins to describe it. It's sweet, it's funny, and it's emotional. While critics originally hated it, the film as gone on to appear in many “best of” film lists. Something Wild (1986)The last person you would expect a New York banker like Charlie to get involved with is a carefree person like Lulu, but after she kidnaps the yuppie for a weekend of reckless fun, Charlie finds the adventure exciting… until things get out of hand. When Lulu's husband discovers what the pair has been up to, he is none too happy. Someone — or perhaps everyone — has been lying. This not-to-miss thriller stars Jeff Daniels as Charlie, Melanie Griffith as Lulu, and a terrifying Ray Liotta has Lulu's husband, Ray. After Hours (1985)Have you ever had one of those days? After work, Paul Hackett heads to a local diner where he meets a woman named Marcy. The two exchange numbers and later, she invites him over to her apartment. This starts off a chain of events that will have Paul running around the streets of New York from one mess to the next. Before the end of the night his face ends up on wanted posters, he's chased by an angry mob, and he becomes involved in a city wide crime ring. It's a night that Paul will never forget — or maybe, survive. Featuring a star-packed cast including Griffin Dunne (An American Werewolf in London), Rosanna Arquette, Linda Fiorentino, Teri Garr, Catherine O'Hara, Bronson Pinchot, Dick Miller, and even Cheech and Chong. Directed by Martin Scorsese.Valley Girl (1983)Randy (Nicholas Cage) is a punk rocker from Hollywood. Julie (Deborah Foreman) is a Valley Girl. Their worlds are complete opposites and it seems that everybody and everything will try and stop them from getting together, but sometimes, love finds a way. This classic 80s film was directed by Martha Coolidge and will take you back to the sights, sounds, and music of the 1980s.Thanks for checking out the podcast. If you don't have plans this Valentine's Day, you can have a great time renting and watching one of these films. And if you would prefer to get out of the house, you can always drop by a stranger's funeral. You never know who you'll meet! This is a public episode. He soon learns that this criminal was an alien from another planet, and that New York is host to a secret government agency tasked with tracking alien lifeforms on Earth. He is recruited into the Men in Black by Agent K, and is deemed Agent J.Agents K and J are soon on the hunt for a Bug, an extra-terrestial cockroach who seeks “the galaxy,” a precious energy source that has been left on Earth. As the Bug, donning the skin of a human farmer, rampages through New York, K and J try to mitigate the damage and protect the galaxy, and the Earth itself, from the Bug.The tagline for Men in Black was “Protecting the Earth from the Sum of the Universe.”You can find Men in Black to stream on demand on Amazon Prime or for rent or purchase on Amazon and Apple TV.Be sure to sign up for our Patreon, where we watch the films of the Cold War and try to unpack them as political and historical documents! Vision Quest is the story of high school senior wrestler who wants to lose weight and get into a lower weight class just to battle a seemingly impossible foe. The movie which starred Matthew Modine and Linda Fiorentino was not a box office success, but has since become an 80's cult hit. Vision Quest is the rare movie which has been helped by it movie soundtrack. The soundtrack is filled with many successful 80's artist, including two songs from Madonna who was skyrocketing into superstardom at the time. Most of the artists, with the exception of Madonna and The Style Council, were hard rock acts, like Foreignor, Dio, Sammy Hagar and Journey. Other artist involved were Don Henley, Red Rider and John Waite. The album went platinum in the United States and made it to #30 on the US Billboard 200. Tracks like Only The Young, Hot Blooded, Hungry For Heaven and Lunatic Fringe as still found on classic rock stations this day. Tune in as Arthur's pal Kate returns to the program for a review and recap of After Hours, the 1985 Martin Scorsese film that plunges you into an overnight odyssey whose ridiculous hijinks can be darkly comedic one moment and genuinely terrifying the next. The movie's symbolic focus on gender politics and emasculation, a scene that's borrowed straight from a Franz Kafka parable, and Kate getting flabbergasted by the revelation that Arthur (at the time of recording) had never seen anything with one of the biggest starlets of classic Hollywood comprise a few of the topics that pop up in this cinephilic episode. Directed by Martin Scorsese, After Hours stars Griffin Dunne, Rosanna Arquette, Linda Fiorentino, Teri Garr, John Heard, Tommy Chong, Cheech Marin, Catherine O'Hara, Will Patton, Verna Bloom, and Larry Block. "Dennis vs. the Movies" continues with a look at Martin Scorsese's black comedy about a yuppie who meets the wrong woman, is stranded overnight in Soho, and hunted by an angry mob. It's a comedic take on the country's feelings about New York, expressed in other film of the period--a terrifying, lawless place, Escape from New York, The Warriors, "the Bronx is burning" and all that--and stands it on its head. Forty years later, it's hard not to feel nostalgic for a world where artists could squat in warehouses and diners were open all night, even if it came with a side of vigilantes and home invasions. Starring Griffin Dunne, Rosanna Arquette, Teri Garr, Verna Bloom, Cheech and Chong, Linda Fiorentino, John Heard, and Catherine O'Hara. Written by Joseph Minion, story by Joe Frank. Directed by Martin Scorsese.

The calendar may have already flipped to November but Marty Month continues as we fittingly go into overtime with 1985's After Hours, directed by Martin Scorsese, written by Joseph Minion, and starring Griffin Dunne, Rosanna Arquette, Linda Fiorentino, Teri Garr, Catherine O'Hara, Verna Bloom, John Heard, Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. It's a rare straight-up comedy from Marty, an anxious nightmare of a movie that takes place on one wild night in the streets of New York City, and it's Justin's nomination to the ADHD-DVD canon to close out a month long celebration of Scorsese cinema. Other works discussed in this episode include Cape Fear, The Last Waltz, Talk To Me, Trick 'r Treat, and the Final Destination franchise, while we're hyper-fixating on cursed micro-playlists and even more cursed interactions at the gas station. If you'd like to watch the movie ahead of our discussion, it is sadly not available for streaming in Canada at the time of publication, but is rentable for $5 through YouTube, Amazon and Cineplex. We'll be back next week to kick off our latest theme month, Dante's In Fer November: a three-week sprint through the works of Joe Dante that begins next Friday when Matt Pollock joins us to talk Tom Hanks in The 'Burbs!

Screenwriter Topper Lilien has a lens shaped with extraordinary life experiences, which have a symbiotic relationship with his diverse array of film projects. In other words, the two feed off of each other, and push forward the creation of something truly unique. The New York native has seen it all when it comes to the development, production, release, and perhaps most importantly, the collaborative aspects of film. He wrote one of the seminal jazz films about the colorful life and career of jazz pianist Joe Albany, Low Down, told through the perspective of his daughter, Amy-Jo, who served as co-writer. Directed by Jeff Preiss, the Sundance release surveyed their experiences in Los Angeles in the 1970s, and starred John Hawkes, Elle Fanning, Lena Headey, Glenn Close and Flea; the latter of whom served as executive producer along with bandmate Anthony Kiedis. In the late 90s, Topper wrote Paul Newman's second to last live action film, Where the Money Is, with E. Max Frye (Something Wild; Foxcatcher) and Carroll Cartwright. Produced by Ridley Scott, the film co-starred Dermot Mulroney and Linda Fiorentino, and journeyed the plight of a professional thief who experiences a stroke and is “forced” into a nursing home. Topper's other notable collaborators include James Cameron, Michael Bay, Quincy Jones, Steve Golin and Robin Williams. In our conversation, we discussed the process of writing on a typewriter; trial by fire in Hollywood; working on the ill-fated Dungeons and Dragons, which starred Jeremy Irons and Marlon Wayans; and collaborating with Fisher Stevens, Elmore Leonard the late Willie Garson.Opening Credits: 1st Contact - Wohin I Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0); So Cow - Off Out I Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0). In the early Eighties, Martin Scorcese was struggling to get The Last Temptation of Christ into production. After Paramount abandoned the adaptation, Scorcese decided instead to focus on smaller, independent projects. The script for this 1985 black comedy came to him by way of his lawyer, was written as an assignment for a film class, inspired by a surrealist monologue, and later infused with dialogue from Kafka by Scorcese. The result was a cult classic, recently inducted into the Criterion Collection, starring Griffin Dunne, Rosanna Arquette, Linda Fiorentino, Teri Garr, Catherine O'Hara, and John Heard. While it wasn't a box office hit, it earned Scorcese the Best Dirctor trophy at Cannes and Universal soon expressed interest in making Last Temptation. Didn't you hear?
