For ambient and electronic artists, the music of the winter season holds a special appeal. Dense drones, chilled harmonies, bright bells and percussion, and the psychoactive power of minimalist patterns — add up to a powerful palette of musical elements. The small but artistically mighty countries of Scandinavia and the Arctic north produce far more than their share of world-class music across a wide range of contemporary genres and music for film. Nourishing it all is the influence of the extraordinary natural environment: the cold North Sea and volcanic islands, the dramatic coastal mountains and fjords, the vast boreal forests, the visual magic of fog, mist, and snow, and the otherworldly spectacle of the auroras—the famous northern lights. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, wintry ambient from Scandinavia and the Arctic north to Northern California, on a program called "NORTHERN LIGHTS 5." Music is by ROBERT JÜRJENDAL, ERIK WØLLO, PHILLIP WILKERSON & CHRIS RUSSELL, SNOWDROPS, TERJE ISUNGSET & EIVIND AARSET, MARK BANNING (RIP), and JEFF PEARCE. Sigurd Hole has been a vital part of the Norwegian music scene for the past decade, both as part of different jazz ensembles and through his work related to Norwegian folk music. In February 2020 came the monumental "Lys / Mørke".  A solo bass double album recorded on the arctic islands of Fleinvær in Northern Norway, "Lys / Mørke" can in many ways be seen as a response to the climate and ecological crisis, focusing in large on the conscious act of listening to the natural world. The album was premiered in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on February 3rd, 2020, and received worldwide critical acclaim. 2022 sees the release of a new album called "Roraima", out February 18th. "Roraima" was commissioned by Oslo World for the festival in 2020, and reflects themes such as solidarity and ecological vulnerability and draws inspiration from the creation myth of the Yanomami people and the sound of the Amazon rainforest. The ensemble features Trygve Seim, Frode Haltli, Helga Myhr, Tanja Orning, Håkon Aase, Per Oddvar Johansen, and Sigurd Hole, and the music also includes field recordings of the Amazon biophony by US soundscape ecologist Bernie Krause. Besides his own projects Hole is known for his work with ensembles and musicians like Tord Gustavsen trio, Eple Trio, Karl Seglem acoustic quartet, Helge Lien, Bugge Wesseltoft, Eli Storbekken, Nils Økland, Terje Isungset, Frode Haltli and Trygve Seim. In this episode, Sigurd shares his background, education, and musical journey. In the new episode of the Nordics Unveiled, Eldbjørg Hemsing is joint by one of Europe's most accomplished and innovative percussionists Terje Isungset. With over two decades of experience in jazz and Scandinavian music, Terje has already made a significant mark in pushing the musical boundaries far beyond tradition. His distinctive artistic works are exploring the interdisciplinary performances of sound and shamanistic rituals.Crafting his own instruments from natural elements such as arctic birch, granite, slate, sheep bells and most remarkably the ice. Terje is highly recommended to those sensible to the poetry and simplicity of sounds, with ‘timbres' and ‘colours' being central in his music and compositions.Media praises him as innovative, visual, energetic and different from any previously known concepts. Percussion Profiles publication has listed him among the 25 of the world's most creative percussionists and he was also named the Norwegian Jazz musician of the year.“It was years ago, when I was asked to do a concert in a frozen waterfall in Lillehammer. I thought what should we do, work against or with nature? So I decided to work with nature, went to location and started to collect stones, wood and since I was there in the winter I also checked the ice… When I head the sound of ice and saw it, I just simply fell in love and from then on, cannot stop it.“Terje Isungset, The Nordics Unveiled"First you need to harvest the ice, which is the most challenging part. But even before harvesting, it is crucial to know that the lake (where the ice will be harvested from) has sound – not every lake has the sound. If the ice is there, I can make instrument in between two to three days. Then we can make various types of horns, ice drums, iceophones that can be tuned."Terje Isungset, The Nordics Unveiled"If I go to perform in India, China or Japan, we always make the instruments there. Sometimes I bring a little box of ice also from Norway, because I have experienced, for example in Japan that it is difficult to find a well-sounding ice. I can of course always tune it, but the sound difference would effect the music because of the resonance. The range of sound is really big, from a completely death sound, to almost singing. The longest resonance I had with one instrument was 18 seconds."Terje Isungset, The Nordics UnveiledMore information about Terje Isungset and his music on the following link.

The main theme for this mix (as well as the title "Discouraging Intruders" ) came from the spoken word track by the Dwindlers: "What the Wolves Said": "No two of us on the same note, we sound bigger...our harmony discouraging intruders..." Although generally not sounding like a pack of howling wolves, sometimes the purpose of 'ambient' music also is also is to 'discourage intruders' (such as unwanted sounds) to invade your environment.. From the opening, this mix slowly dwells into long drone soundscapes - some discouraging, others comforting - only to be interrupted by a climactic eruption from Siddhartha Barnhoorn's cinematic 'Artifacts' directly following the enchanting vocals of Fovea Hex, a choir arrangement that seems to be coming directly from heaven by Franz Liszt (from 'Via Crucis', 1879!), followed by a Sibil'La Catalana string theme from the 15th century - and finally to be concluded by the acquiescent vocals from the Terje Isungset track. Whether you prefer to be on the inside or the outside is up to your imagination... --- originally published on Ambientblog --- Playlist (First time is the start time, second time indicates sample length) 00:00 (01:30) Äpne Sinn - EspiritistaEspiritista, 2011; Relaxed Machinery rM01501:00 (02:00) Antonymes - On Arrival at the Strange Museum (ending)The Licence to Interpret Dreams, 2011; Hidden Shoal Recordings HSR08003:00 (03:13) Antonymes - On Arrival at the Strange MuseumThe Licence to Interpret Dreams, 2011; Hidden Shoal Recordings HSR08005:35 (04:12) The Dwindlers - What the Wolves Said -Various Artists - Brave New World, 2011; Feedback Loop Label FbL01008:00 (06:07) Field Rotation - A Dimly Haze (Asleep Pt. 1)And Tomorrow I Will Sleep, 2011; Hibernate HB3109:00 (01:24) Enrico Coniglio - Kingdom of HerDialogue One, 2011; Silentes cd 20112810:08 (04:16) Arturas Bumsteinas - Boletus SatanasPastoral, 2011; Crónica 05512:28 (04:53) Johann Johannsson - An Injury to One is the Concern of AllThe Miners' Hymn, 2011; 130701 CD13-1316:11 (05:40) Johann Johannsson - Freedom from Want and FearThe Miners' Hymn, 2011; 130701 CD13-1318:34 (04:04) Model Citizen - Sleep LearningVarious Artists - Brave New World, 2011; Feedback Loop Label FbL01019:40 (06:37) Fovea Hex - Cup Of Joy (Colin Potter remix)Here is where we used to sing (bonus EP), 2011; Janet Records JRDS004B25:45 (02:57) Siddhartha Barnhoorn - ArtifactsPillars of Light, 2011; Self-released27:14 (03:59) Michael Prime - God's Own DibberL-Fields, 2000; Sonoris SON-0828:34 (06:00) Carl Michael von Hausswolff - Day800 000 seconds in Harar, 2011; Touch TO:8230:30 (04:54) Yann Novak - NightfallNightfall, 2011; self-released34:27 (01:03) Franz Liszt - Station III, Jesus Fällt zum ersten malVia Crucis, 1986; Decca 4805133 35:20 (01:18) Anonymus - Sibil'la CatalanaEl Cant de la Sibil-La, 1988; AliaVox Heritage AVSA 987936:20 (01:20) Arms and Sleepers - CrashNostalgia for the Absolute, 2011; self-released37:12 (04:49) Robert Crouch - A Body of WorkVarious Artists - Wood, Dragon's Eye Fifth Anniversary, 2011; Dragon's Eye, de600840:16 (05:58) Loscil - Névé -Coast Range Arc, 2011; Glacial Movements GM01043:44 (02:41) Stuart Sweeney - Where the Shores Meet (16-9 version)16-9, 2011; Oomff UK OOMFF1001CD45:41 (02:20) Philip Samartzis - Davis StationVarious Artists - 10, 2011; Room40 DRM41045:49 (03:53) John Duncan, Valerio Tricoli - The Garden (excerpt)Eco et Narcisso. I have no idea why I called this mix "cloud mapping". It started off as something about the sky, then aerial views of something, then blah blah blah...then it ends up as "cloud mapping". Most of the music is new or new-ish.  There is no big time theme in this mix, just good, drifting ambient music.  I guess you could picture yourself flying over clouds while listening to this.  My favorite track in the mix is from Christopher Willits' release "Live on Earth Vol.1".  It's the track, "Stars and Plants (live) – Kyoto, Japan – June 19, 2008".
