The Microphones, titulado “The Microphones in 2020”.
Coleman's first show of 2025, with a few upcoming gig highlights from Empress, Brutalize, and Mount Eerie; new music from Order of Nosferat, Lifeless Dark; a double dose of new stuff from Ayloss-helmed projects Auriferous Flame, and Spectral Lore; and a brief rundown of some of Cvlt Nation's best-of '24 lists. Oh yeah, and since it's our 40TH YEAR ON AIR I dipped back to a primo '85 release from Celtic Frost. Anticipate other little celebrations of this milestone through the year.
Alyson - a lifelong and current resident of Los Angeles - and Breht discuss the wildfires ravaging L.A. Together they discuss the acute and structural causes of the fires, the role played by Climate Change, the reactionary propaganda surrounding the fires, the class dynamics at play, the self-serving careerist motivations of bourgeois politicans, the organized grassroots community response on the ground, and what it all means for the future of California, the US, and the world. 'Night Palace', el nuevo disco de Phil Elverum como Mount Eerie, es el reflejo de toda una carrera. Aquí confluyen 25 años de reflexiones, emociones y grabaciones. A lo largo de sus 26 tracks aparecen todos los motivos sonoros y líricos que han hecho de Elverum una figura indispensable del folk independiente. Todo ello envuelto en los sonido de una naturaleza, inmensa y amenazada, que siempre ha sido parte de su inspiración.Playlist:Tyler, The Creator - Judge JudyFlying Lotus, Dawn Richard - Let Me CookKAYTRANADA, PinkPantheress - Snap My FingerMaribou State, Holly Walker - OthersideBecky and the Birds - To trust youBaba Stiltz, Okay Kaya - I Believe In LoveJames Blake - Like The EndMount Eerie - I Walk070 Shake - ElephantCarlita - TimePet Shop Boys - New London boyCharli xcx, Bon Iver - I think about it all the time featuring bon iverEspineli, BAZOFIA - almaenpenaMagdalena Bay, Grimes - ImageNilüfer Yanya - Mutations (Empress Of Remix)Escuchar audio

Steven and Ian open today's episode with a quick Sportscast about the World Series and the Yankees fan who almost ripped Mookie Betts' arm off. Bad fans is actually an overarching theme of the show — the guys start with the upcoming election, and whether we're headed for a wave of anti-PC entertainment if Trump wins. Then they address this week's music-critic controversy involving a bad review of the new Halsey album, and the predictable freakout from chronically online fans. After that, they check in on the Fantasy Albums Draft and talk about the latest from Mount Eerie as well as Phil Elverum's career with The Microphones. Then they do a "Scene Report" segment on recent concerts by Knocked Loose and Drive-By Truckers. In the mailbag, the guys are asked about "time and place" bands, i.e. acts that were set up to make one perfect album and nothing else. Finally, in Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about the emo band Ben Quad while Steven endorses Philly power band 2nd Grade.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. INTERVIEW: Phil Elverum of The Microphones and Mount Eerie (September 2023) by J.J. Weston on Radio One 91FM Dunedin
Phil Elverum has recorded more than 40 albums and documented decades of his life in song – first as “The Microphones” and then as “Mount Eerie”. In this episode, Phil talks with Guy about his musical beginnings playing the tuba, the 40-minute song that tells his life story, and the album he wrote about his wife's death – a project that resonated strongly with countless people experiencing grief.Check out Phil's latest album, Microphones in 2020, here: https://www.pwelverumandsun.com/products/microphones-in-2020-cdLinks from the Show: Interview with young Phil about NirvanaPhil's WebsiteThe Glow Pt. 2Microphones in 2020Seaweed by Mount EerieA Crow Looked at MeGeneviève Castrée: complete worksConnect with Phil:•
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a very cool episode that was inspired by a very cool performance coming up in Los Angeles soon. It's David Longstreth in conversation with Phil Elverum. Longstreth is the focal point of the band Dirty Projectors, which formed about 20 years ago in Brooklyn, and was part of a scene that kind of elevated indie-pop into something more serious and timeless. It's been clear throughout the years that Longstreth is a musical searcher, having never been content to repeat himself. That's led to an incredibly varied catalog that can even border on pleasantly confusing, and the huge undertaking that he's in the midst of—and the starting point of this conversation—is no exception. About 10 years ago, Longstreth began working on what I'd guess you'd call a contemporary classical song cycle called Song of the Earth, which he performed with the ensemble stargaze a few years back. He's since been refining and reworking the piece, and along with Dirty Projectors and the world-renowned L.A. Philharmonic, he'll perform it on March 2 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. That's a huge group of people and a massive undertaking—and not to be missed. At almost the opposite end of the spectrum will be that evening's opening act, Mount Eerie, aka renowned minimalist songwriter Phil Elverum. Elverum is almost a mythical figure in indie-rock, having forged a truly unique path over the past decade, first under the name The Microphones and later Mount Eerie. His music is often deeply personal, and he'll move from simply structured indie-folk into fully immersive lo-fi drones in ways that can confound and disarm. His catalog is wide and deep, though if you're unfamiliar with his music, a good place to start is 2001's The Glow Pt. 2. At this concert, he'll not only open the show for Dirty Projectors but he'll also—as you'll hear—participate a little bit, because Longstreth tapped Elverum to help out on a Song of The Earth piece called “Twin Aspens.” They were nice enough to give us a preview of the piece here, so check out a little bit of a not-quite-final version of “Twin Aspens,” composed by Longstreth and with some help from Elverum. As you'll hear in this conversation, these guys are deeply immersed in music, and certainly not just pop music. From hearing them chat I learned about Japanese Gagaku music, among other things. They also talk at length about Elverum's incredible album-length song “Microphones in 2020,” which is essentially a history of his own evolution, with a fascinating visual to go along with it. They also talk a lot about starting the creative process with a palette in mind, which I found fascinating as well. Enjoy the chat, and if you're in the L.A. area, I think there are a few tickets left for this once-in-a-lifetime performance on March 2. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to David Longstreth and Phil Elverum for talking. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great stuff at Talkhouse.com. Phil Elverum is the primary songwriter, performer, and producer for Mount Eerie and The Microphones. For around 27 years, Phil has been creating some of the most revered and critically acclaimed indie folk of all time. His music veers between stripped back acoustic guitar recordings, to terrifyingly loud and distorted sonic experiments. Mount Eerie is currently on the verge of a return to Aotearoa, playing in Tāmaki Makaurau, Pōneke, and Ōtepoti with Black Belt Eagle Scout - another band from Washington State that will bring new and classic Mount Eerie tunes to a new, full band soundscape. I've been obsessed with the music of The Microphones and Mount Eerie since I was fourteen. I think I had the Glow Part 2 album cover as my profile picture on Google for about four years, so suffice to say it was a real privilege to interview him. We had a yarn about the upcoming shows, his previous tours of Aotearoa, twenty years of the Mount Eerie name, and more.
E whai ake nei, coming up today on VA! Liam spoke to Phil Elverum from Mount Eerie and The Microphones about their upcoming gig at Whammy Bar. Frances speaks with Gene Rivers, Auckland Council Arts and Culture Programmer who runs the Stand Up Stand Out performing arts and music regional competition for high schoolers. She also speaks with Sally McMath from Artspace Aotearoa about the launch of The Kit, a new subscription-based artist resource.
Devendra Banhart, Phil Elverum, Jenny Hval and Bedouine discuss eating on tour, how art is intimacy exposed, and what can be learned from terrible shows. Devendra Banhart, was born in Texas and raised between Venezuela and California, where he attended the San Francisco Art Institute. After dropping out in 2000, he started moving around different cities, experimenting with songwriting and busking as he went. When he released his second album, Oh Me Oh My, in 2002 ,he signed to XL Recordings, and has since released nine albums and collaborated with artists like Anohni, Beck and The Strokes' Fabrizio Moretti. His new album Flying Wig has just come out and was recorded in a Topanga cabin once owned by Neil Young. He's also a visual artist, and has had pieces featured in galleries including San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art, MOCA and Brussels' Centre for Fine Arts. Phil Elverum is a singer-songwriter, producer and visual artist from Washington state. Best known for his musical projects The Microphones and Mount Eerie, he almost exclusively uses analogue recording equipment to make music and tends to compose as he records. His output spans more than 40 albums. Norwegian singer-songwriter, producer and novelist Jenny Hval's avant-garde music has a heavy focus on sexuality and politics. Her debut EP Cigars was released in 2006 and was nominated for a Spellemannprisen (the Nowegian Grammys). Since then, she has released music under her own name, Rocket to the Sky and collaboratively with Laura Jean as Lost Girls. Bedouine is a Syrian-American folk musician whose sound is beautifully reminiscent of 1960s North America. Born in Aleppo, Syria, she grew up between Saudi Arabia and Texas before settling in Savannah to study sound design. Since then, she's released three studio albums and toured with the likes of Fleet Foxes, Michael Kiwanuka and Jose Gonzalez.
Breht joins Della from the wonderful podcast Upstream to discuss Buddhism and Marxism! From Upstream: "When you think about the philosophies and practices of Buddhism and Marxism, you might not immediately think that they have much in common. However, you might be surprised at how much overlap and complementary resonance there actually is between these two rich and beautiful traditions. In this conversation, we've brought on Breht O'Shea, a Buddhist practitioner and Marxist political educator based out of Omaha, Nebraska. Breht is the host of the podcast Revolutionary Left Radio and co-host of the podcasts Red Menace, Guerrilla History, and, most recently, Shoeless in South Dakota. You might remember Breht from when he was on the show about a year ago to talk about revolutionary leftist theory. In this conversation, we explore how both Buddhism & Marxism offer helpful pathways to liberation and provide a spot-on analysis of the root causes of suffering. We also explore some of the potential tensions between Buddhism and Marxism, as well as what each tradition can learn from the other. And we end with a powerful invitation to embark on the path of the Bodhisattva Revolutionary to both end the internal and structural causes and conditions of suffering and to bring forth the systemic changes necessary for the transition to a socialist and eventually communist economy based on liberation, equity, and justice for all. This interview was inspired by an episode of Revolutionary Left Radio titled Dialectics & Liberation: Insights from Buddhism and Marxism where Breht read a speech he gave at Arizona State University on the topic of dialectical materialism, Buddhism, and Marxism. Definitely check that episode out when you're done listening to this — it's a great complement to this conversation. Thank you to Carolyn Raider for this episode's cover art and to Mount Eerie for the intermission music. Upstream theme music was composed by Robert Raymond/Lanterns. Phil Elverum (The Microphones, Mount Eerie) returns to Low Profile with his audio engineer friend Matt Fenton to discuss the time they gave the Kamloops, British Columbia band Peace a chance. They discuss their behind-the-scenes experience facilitating the 2006 debut by the band Peace, “On Earth.” It was the first project Elverum signed to his own label PW Elverum and Sun, up to which point had only released his own music. It's the winter time do we've got some more recommendations for you. Not, I repeat, not Christmas recommendations. You have to follow your own bliss at Christmas. No, instead Alan and Sarah are here to talk about things that feel wintery-but-not-Christmassy to them. Things like Windwaker, Sigur Ros's (), Mulled Wine and Nigella's Roast Chicken, Twin Peaks, and Mount Eerie. Extremely un-festive we're sure you'll agree. Alan is @alan_maguire. Juvenalia is his main thing right now. Sarah is @griffski. Her books are in all good bookshops. Thank you to Dee McDonnell for our artwork. We have a Patreon! You can get bonus episodes including our fortnightly show Started/Finished where we talk about the pop culture we started and finished in the previous two weeks. We also have some free lil bits of merch. It's patreon.com/juvenalia This episode was produced by Alan. Juvenalia is a Tall Tales podcast. Thank you Cassie.
The holidays are here, meaning it's not only time to tune out holiday music in every store but it's also time to chill out, lay on your couch, and binge watch movies. This week on Indiecast, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen share their recommendations for the best music documentaries to check out (or to put on in the background while decorating your Christmas tree). Plus, they look back on iconic record label The Elephant 6, which was a home for bands like Neutral Milk Hotel and The Olivia Tremor Control. In terms of banter this week, Indiecast talks Twitter's still-uncertain future and how difficult it would be to hash out trends if the platform shut down completely. They also imagine kind of music they'd play if they had a college radio show (hint: it'd be pretty similar to Indiecast). The Recommendation Corner this week has Ian shouting out Drowse's Wane Into It, which is a mix of slowcore-country combined with Mount Eerie. Steven shouts out Weyes Blood's latest album And In The Darkness Hearts Aglow.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Listen to Episode 116 here or below and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. You can submit questions for Steve and Ian at indiecastmailbag@gmail.com, and make sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter for all the latest news.

It's a doubleheader of singer-songwriters who are separated by several years but tied together by similar tragedies that reshaped their lives and their art. First, Phil Elverum of The Microphones and Mount Eerie tells Marc why he urgently needed to write his new album. Then Marc Mulcahy talks about the stops on his journey, from his work with Miracle Legion to finding mainstream recognition as part of the show The Adventures of Pete and Pete to realigning everything through his solo work.
