We interviewed producer, engineer, and mixer, Chris Coady, back in 2016 for Tape Op issue 113. He has worked with TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Future Islands, Beach House, DIIV, The Drums, Porches, Amen Dunes, Sasami, Hand Habits, and countless other artists. Geoff Stanfield caught up with Chris from his studio in Glendale, CA, to discuss a wide range of topics ranging from his formative years in Baltimore, his days at New York City's Quad Studios, and his approach to recording and mixing. Enjoy!
Damon McMahon, AKA Amen Dunes' last album, 2018's Freedom, is one of the great singer-songwriter albums of the last few years and the first to make, sounds a bit like David Gray into a compliment. However, his far more experimental follow up has nowhere near the memorable songs of its predecessor.
Amen Dunes is a musician currently living in New York. His newest record, Death Jokes, is out now on Sub Pop. We chat about our trip to Tbilisi, drinking tea is low T, when you gotta kick it with your kid's friends, sleeping temperatures, nail-biting remedies, he doesn't love touring, he uses zero products, liberal arts college, Kid A comparisons, TJ tries to remix the record, and his first job in New York was making sandwiches at a bodega. instagram.com/amendunes twitter.com/donetodeath twitter.com/themjeans howlonggone.com Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions. This week on the show, we're sitting down with Damon McMahon, best known as the man behind the mysterious and compelling Amen Dunes musical project. Transmissions host Jason P. Woodbury first spoke to McMahon way back in 2012, when he was touring in support of the second Amen Dunes album, 2011's Through Donkey Jaw. Then, they checked in again in 2018, when he released the tremendous Freedom. Amen Dunes' sound has shifted and morphed all along the way, though some constants have remained—particularly, his mantra-like vocals. Even when it's hard to clearly understand exactly what he's saying, McMahon has a way of making his lyrics felt, as if the shape and sound of the words in and of themselves has some occulted meaning. McMahon's latest is called Death Jokes. It was released on May 10th by Sub Pop Records and it's a dense, layered gem. Built on beats, piano—a new instrument for McMahon—and stacked with samples of artists like Lenny Bruce and J Dilla, it's a difficult record to grok at first. It doesn't reveal itself quickly. In a media landscape that often asks us to rush through our experience of music, Death Jokes asks us to stop, to listen again, and to listen deeper. It reveals more as you sit with it. In that way it's a profoundly counter cultural album; it bucks against the mode of our day. This conversation follows suit, examining the way the digital age has tried to reduce human experience down to clean binaries. It's a conversation about spirituality, about the root of music, about the subconscious, and much more. Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network.
Steven and Ian begin today's episode with a quick recap of the seemingly on-pause rap battle between Kendrick Lamar and Drake (0:25), as well as a Sportscast segment on Steven's bandwagon-jumping with the Minnesota Timberwolves (3:39). After that, they address the sad news about the death of Steve Albini at the age of 61 (16:11). They recap the musician/producer's illustrious career, and wonder whether his death marks the end of an era in indie music. Then the guys delve into a recent interview with a member of the shoegaze band Whirr and Ian's run-in with them back in the 2010s (38:02).In the mailbag, a listener comes up with a new term — Poochie band, after the famous Simpsons episode — to describe acts that have one song so good that it makes it impossible to hear any other song they have ever made (46:46). What bands apply as "Poochie" material? In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about the latest effort from hardcore band Knocked Loose while Steven backs the new album by Amen Dunes (55:19).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Hauntology. Perhaps the phrase alone is enough to convince you we've wandered into the realm of pretension. But we've got to use it anyway, because this week on the podcast we're speaking with one of the main people associated with that term: Jim Jupp, co-founder of Ghost Box Records, which has mined TV soundtracks, vintage electronics, psychedelia, pop, and supernatural folklore for decades, issuing music by Broadcast, Pye Corner Audio, The Advisory Circle, and Jupp's own band, The Belbury Poly. Last year, The Belbury Poly released The Path. Borrowing the soundtrack work of Roy Budd and Roger Webb as a starting point, Jupp and crew cook up a heady blend of sound, indulging loping, flute-led jazz passages, delay-soaked kosmische soundscapes, and bombastic bursts of wah-wah and fuzz guitar and funk drums. And over it all is novelist and poet Justin Hopper, who adds quixotic and evocative narration to the record. This week on Transmissions, Jupp joins us to discuss his storied label, plumbing the nostalgic depths, the evocative spaces of The Twilight Zone, fairy lore, extraterrestrial, and yes, "hauntology." Steven and Ian begin today's episode by catching up with "Euphoria," the diss track that Kendrick Lamar unleashed on Drake this week. Did Kendrick really confuse The Sixth Sense star Haley Joel Osment with Texas televangelist Joel Osteen? Looks like it! (0:30) They also check in with the buzzy Sabrina Carpenter pop hit "Espresso," which has signaled the annual (tiresome) conversation about the song of the summer. (11:14)Then they transition to a conversation about Local Natives, the LA band who recently lost one of their founding members. Steven and Ian recap the group's career and comment on the enduring popularity of early 2010s indie stars. (17:26) From there, they discuss three artists who Steven's Fantasy Albums team — Jessica Pratt, Mdou Moctar, and Kamasi Washington — who put out new albums today. (30:25)In the mailbag, they give the yay-or-nay treatment to Amen Dunes (41:54), and also engage in more Lake Mendota/Hovvdy talk. (48:03)For Recommendation Corner, Ian talks up the Swedish band Rain Recordings while Steven catches with the British group English Teacher. (53:31)New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Today on an all-new episode of our weekly interview podcast: Steve Marion, better known by his recording name Delicate Steve. As a sideman, Steve's joined up with folks like Paul Simon, MacDeMarco, Tame Impala, The Black Keys and Yeasayer, but all along he's made his own instrumental guitar recordings. His latest album is out on Anti Records, and it's called After Hours, and it blends viby rhythms with cyber rock riffs, always placing an emphasis on emotionally compelling melodies. For this talk, we dug into his cover of Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah," his work with previous Transmissions guest Shahzad Ismaily, his complicated artistic relationship with Kanye West, and his work on Amen Dunes' Freedom. Thanks for checking out Transmissions. If you dig the show, please consider leaving a five star rating or a review—or just forwarding your favorite episodes to a friend. Polly Jean Harvey (born 9 October 1969) is an English singer, songwriter and musician. Primarily known as a vocalist and guitarist, she is also proficient with a wide range of instruments. Over the course of her career, Harvey established herself as one of the most individual and influential songwriters of her era, exploring themes of sex, religion, and political issues with unnerving honesty, dark humor, and a twisted theatricality. Welcome back to the Fresh Sounds Podcast! This week, Mark and Brendan are back with some quality music to share. This week's show kicks off with a scorcher of a new single from Sam Fender. Then, a trans-Atlantic collaboration between Amen Dunes and (yes) Sleaford Mods. After that, a bit of quirky pop from the English band Teleman. Next, a stellar mishmash from Nevermen, which feature Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio, Mike Patton of Faith No More, and Adam “Doseone” Drucker, of Anticon Records fame. We wrap the pod this week with our archive track: 1984's "I Will Dare," by the undyingly great Twin Cities band The Replacements. Bonus tracks cover a number of genres, with new songs from Stone Giants teaming up with Amon Tobin; a dance tune pairing UK DJ Mark Hawkins with soulman Jamie Lidell; an Eastern indie track from St. Petersburg, Russia from a band named Shortparis; and a bit of light synthpop from King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, followed by a banger from Catching Flies remixed by DJ BORING. For those like Brendan, who don't mind an occasional shot of noise, we wrap with a new single from the noiseniks who go as Pop. 1280. It's the Season Finale of The Witch Wave! Tia Cabral is a Bay Area-based musician who performs under the magical moniker SPELLLING. She released her first moodily mystical full length Pantheon of Me in September 2017 to rave reviews including being Bandcamp's #4 record of that year, and she followed it up in 2018 with her critically acclaimed darkly sparkling album Mazy Fly released on Sacred Bones Records. On both of these albums, she draws from dream imagery and esoteric symbolism to tap into the ethereal realm of emotion and spirit all spiraling from a synthy sonic palette. Her brand new album, The Turning Wheel, marks a symphonic expansion for SPELLLING, with lush orchestral production that utilizes 31 musicians, and celebrates macrocosmic themes of “human unity, the future, divine love and the enigmatic ups and downs of being a part of this carnival called life. ” It feels very much like a Magnum Opus, and heralds a brilliant and bewitching music-maker at the height of her powers. The visuals for the album are maximalist as well with SPELLLING and co. donning elaborate costumes and metamorphic makeup. SPELLLING has toured with Boy Harsher and Amen Dunes and her live performances are regarded as revelations of spell and spectacle. On this episode, Tia discusses her magical music theories, divine influences from Kate Bush to Sun Ra, and how occult practices like tarot and alchemy helped conjure her new album, The Turning Wheel. Pam also talks about the sacred symbolism of the wheel, and answers a listener question about meeting the felines of her dreams. Our sponsors for this episode are Moon Dust Press, Witch Baby Soap, Motherland, BetterHelp, Mithras Candle, and Maude's Paperwing Gallery

🔴 #Fitz12 .
Ok friendos let's do EP21- it's a grand time! In this round we ring in the year 2019 by... doing pretty much the same thing as always- crack open a beer. We try out the Duex Amis Saison by Coal Harbour Brewing, but not before Tristan spills half of it on Mickey's floor. Pete the Cat was there to clean it up at least. For our album introspective we listened to the punishing, aberrant, intoxicating masterpiece of an electronic album- I Care Because You Do by the legendary Aphex Twin. If that album seems dauntingly complex and unintelligible, our film pick isn't much easier to parse through. We watched the 2015 release The Big Short. Mickey tries to sort through the complex circumstances that broke the global economy as depicted in the film, while Tristan just gets inconsolably angry. New and noteworthy by Priests (YES!), Connan Mockasin, Amen Dunes, and Ralph. Tristan makes a wicked Principal Skinner reference and Mickey is not impressed; maybe you will be! Thanks for listening and if you like be sure to subscribe and rate us on iTunes. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook while you are it and check out our EP21 Apple Music playlist to listen to all the tracks we featured this round. Thanks pals!

The end of the year is no doubt a time for rumination on the songs that spoke to us and speculating on which artists will continue to make an impact. In this episode, we bring closure by highlighting the best albums and songs of 2018; the soundtracks that manifested our own experiences. The year taught us to look inwardly, as in Charlotte Day Wilson’s “Doubt,” in which she contemplates leaving behind her vices. Love, she comes to realize, is one of them. Empathetically, Amen Dunes considers mythical heroism and the contradictions of the people we admire in “Miki Dora.” And the dashingly brazen “ Pearly Gates” by U.S. Girls evokes the macro message that the ostensibly pleasurable is the political. We won’t spoil the rest—2018: let’s wrap it up. Episode playlist: 1. Charlotte Day Wilson - “Doubt” from Stone Woman 2. Kaia Kater - “Grenades” from Grenades 3. Amen Dunes - “Miki Dora” from Freedom 4. U.S. Girls - “Pearly Gates” from In A Poem Unlimited 5. Lucy Dacus - “Yours & Mine” from Historian 6. DJ Koze - “Illumination” (feat. Róisín Murphy) from knock knock 7. Janelle Monáe - “Crazy, Classic, Life” from Dirty Computer
Roundtable discussion on the best albums of 2018!
Parker Kindred has a supernatural gift of musical intuition. His intensely imaginative, lyrical playing style imbues the music with a deep hypnotic subtlety. Joe joined Parker in his Williamsburg apartment to discuss: being “inside one’s body”; why identifying as a drummer makes him feel like a loser; working with artists such as Joan As Police Woman and Jeff Buckley; and what he would ask other versions of himself if he could travel through time.
