In this heartfelt farewell episode of The Business Side of Music Podcast, we say goodbye to our host, mentor, and friend, Bob Bender. As we close this chapter, we reflect on the incredible journey, invaluable lessons, and unforgettable moments shared with our listeners. Thank you for being part of this community and for supporting the podcast through the years. Join us as we celebrate Bob's legacy and bid a fond farewell to the show.   Bob Bender:  With over 45 years experience in the music entertainment industry, Bob Bender has produced over 300 Tours, Festivals, and concerts throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, and Japan.  Bender worked in the capacity of Tour Manager for such artists including Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band, Billy Preston, Dwight Twilley, Lisa Lisa & the Cult Jam, Rick Derringer, Edgar Winter, A Flock of Seagulls, Mark Lindsay (of Paul Revere & The Raiders fame), New Kids on The Block, and Gene Pitney, just to name a few. He also held the position of Manager of Artist Development for Curb Records, representing such label acts as Tim McGraw, LeAnn Rimes, Jo Dee Messina, and Hank Williams Jr. In addition, Bob oversaw the Christian retail division for the label, and helped develop it into a million-dollar division for the company, eventually becoming the Director of Sales for Curb Records. Bender went on to manage the legendary Michael Martin Murphey's record label “WestFest Records”. Under Bob's direction, Murphey re-released his 1970's hit single “Wildfire” as a new mix with the popular country group “Lonestar”, appearing on mainstream radio after an absence of over 20 years, with over 400 country stations playing his hit song, along with appearances on television, including CBS's “Late Night with David Letterman”. Bob has also overseen television promotion and infomercial marketing campaigns for various country, pop, and Christian artists. He has produced, co-produced, and marketed numerous concert DVD projects, including Tommy Cash's “Fade to Black” concert and Eric Durrance's “Turn It Off” video (which climbed to #17 on GAC's “Country Countdown” charts). Other various television credits include the “Celebration for Young Americans” television concert special for George H. Bush's 1989 presidential inauguration, the “Billy Preston Live in Atlanta” concert, and the USO's “Operation Homecoming” television concert special filmed aboard the USS Ranger aircraft carrier during Desert Storm.  In 2015, Bender entered a new direction by beginning production on a television series titled “Songs in the Spotlight,” the first season of which was picked up by Hulu.  In addition to his television credits, Bob has produced multiple album projects, including a live-in concert CD for Grammy-award-winning artist Billy Preston, Gospel recording artist Joanne Cash (Johnny Cash's sister), Americana act Steven L. Smith Band (earning a first-round Grammy nomination for Americana Album of the Year), Country music singer Whitney Wattenbarger, pop group Grant My Wishes, and heavy metal band Se7en Dead. Other accomplishments include Serving on the CMTA Board of Directors for the Gospel Music Association, being a guest lecturer at Belmont University in Nashville, hosting panels at MTSU, and speaking on the business aspects of the music industry.  Currently, Bender is producing and hosting a podcast series called “The Business Side of Music,” recorded in Nashville, TN. Ringo on the bongos! That's right, it's "You're Going to Lose That Girl" by The Beatles. John is at his snarly best in this number, and George & Paul provide some nice call-and-response. Anyways, the bongos and lyrics are our main focus, as they should be. And who sings "yeah" better?! - no one's better than the Beatles, there. The second version comes from The Villagers, a Zone Press Variation that comes from Florida - it's garage and great! Next up is Chicago's Cryan' Shames and who's gonna argue with a band whose lead singer is Toad? And it's about time we discussed JC Hooke, a hook-handed percussionist rival to Moulty! In 1971, Canada's Five Man Electrical Band did it and It's Absolutely Right - a post-Sgt. Pepper homage, a la ELO. The final word goes to Dwight Twilley, who covered the song in 2009 and it's a celebration. As it should be. Yeah!

It's a sad day in the world of music today. Yesterday, power-pop legend, Dwight Twilley passed away. Dwight and his music will be missed by so many. His musical reach was huge and he also had such an amazing impact on so many people on a personal level. Myself included. My thoughts are with his wife, Jan, his family and close friends. I was a huge fan and am so saddened by this loss. My conversations with Dwight are from episodes 340 and 445 both in 2015 . They're great. There's a lot of laughs and Dwight's story and how he handled himself as a musician and human being is all there. Rest in peace Dwight. You'll be missed.

He has toured with the likes of Paul Collins and Peter Case, played on sessions for Dwight Twilley, and even met Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles) once. After playing bass in different parts of the world, on national tours, and with several local bands, the cool thing you find about Timm is he's still very much in touch with his roots. Hello and welcome to How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! Today we go back to January 6, 2015 episode 340 with power-pop legend, Dwight Twilley! Below are my original notes from the show. I have been a fan of Dwight's since I was 15 and I heard the song, "Girls". Over the years, I've gone back to through his catalog and my power pop friends and I have kept up with him and remained fans. We had a great phone conversation about everything from the making of Always, making music in his studio on his own terms, his burgeoning art career, "Solid Gold" vs. "Dance Fever" and much more! I hope you enjoy our conversation. I sure did. let's get down! If you feel so inclined. Venmo: www.venmo.com/John-Goudie-1  Paypal: paypal.me/johnnygoudie

Just like last week, this episode is primarily based around what I’ve been listening to in the Ledge home base over the last few days. Some of it is brand new material. Much of it has been old faves that span almost 60 years of great rock and roll. Overall, though, this show is primarily a showcase for old and new power pop. In the new category, there are fabulous new tracks by The Whiffs, Sharp Pins, Uni Boys, and The Trouble Seekers, along with “excavated” recordings by The Bings and Popsicko.  As for old faves, it’s a history lesson of sorts. There’s The Monkees and The Kinks from the 60s. The Jam, The Flamin’ Groovies, Nick Lowe, Graham Parker, and The Rubinoos from the 70s. The 80s are represented by the likes of The Barracudas,  Dwight Twilley, The Bongos, and Camper Van Beethoven. Maybe the 90s aren’t as highly represented, but there is “Tayter Country” by The Cavedogs, quite possibly my favorite song of 1980. Label: Shelter 40380Year: 1975Condition: M-Price: $18.00"I'm On Fire" is one of the very best musical moments of 1975, yet it's simply not played enough anymore. Check out the mp3 jukebox "snippet" of it! By the way, if you think the A side is great, you'll be blown away by the B side too, which by the way is a previously unreleased, non-album track. Twilley & his band were a bit of anomaly at the time, since their music is an amalgam of Rockabilly and Power Pop. Take a listen to the fade-out chorus to "I'm On Fire" sometime, and you'll definitely recognize the influence of the most popular Power Pop band of all time—The Beatles. Note: This beautiful copy comes in the original picture sleeve, which has a staple hole in the upper left corner, and some notable top edge wear. The record grades Near Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio). There is a small sticker stain the A side label, and a small yellow dot in the deadwax on the B-side, which probably could be removed. Note: This scan is a representative image from our archives.

If Elvis Presley and the Beatles had a baby it would be Dwight Twilley - that's how one writer described the Tulsa, Oklahoma native, who had top 20 hits with 1975's “I'm on Fire,” and 1984's “Girls.” Twilley has made a career out of making great melodic rock which some call “power pop.” His music continues to be used in popular culture, like his song, “Looking For the Magic,” which was featured prominently in the 2011 horror film You're Next. Sandwiched among those successes is the album Wild Dogs from 1986. Produced by Val Garay, who helmed big albums from the Motels and Linda Ronstadt, the record contains some of Twilley's strongest material of his whole career. But, things got derailed when the head of his record label got indicted on payola charges. Now, Iconoclassic Records has finally put this underappreciated album back in print, including bonus tracks. Twilley talks about working with Kim Carnes on the song, "Hold On, and teaming with partner Phil Seymour one last time for "Shooting Stars." He also tells us how soon we should expect new material from him.

Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes and I’m addicted to Mexican food. I could eat Mexican food for every meal, every day and not once complain. There are so many different options and then different takes on the dishes. The more I learn about it the more I want to explore and try everything.  So you can imagine how excited I was that we feature a Tulsa taco guide in our May issue. We break down nine different types of tacos and 18 places to get them, including Calaveras Mexican Grill, located in the Kendall Whittier District. It’s also a food truck, which has been the Molina family’s primary operation since 2020. My guest on this episode is David Molina. He’s continuing his family’s tradition to feed people delicious authentic Mexican food. His parents immigrated from Jalisco, Mexico, to California in 1993 and then relocated to Tulsa, and as you’ll hear they’ve been operating restaurants throughout Tulsa ever since.  David is a first-generation American and a native Tulsan, who has grown up in a city that is a lot different than when his parents settled here 24 years ago. Today, you’ll most likely find him somewhere around Tulsa slinging tacos out their food truck window. They kicked off the month at the Jenks Food Truck Festival and had a line around the block shortly after they opened the window. In this conversation recorded April 27 on Zoom, we discuss how much fun it is to run a food truck and toward the end of the conversation he shares their upcoming schedule and the best way to book them for your event.  Anytime I have the opportunity to discuss Mexican food with an expert, I have to ask the burning questions like is a burrito a taco and does Taco Bell count as Mexican food? He answers those questions and more. I had a great time getting to know David and learning more about his and his family’s role in the Tulsa food scene. Following my conversation with David, I’m sharing Sarah Frick’s cover of the classic Dwight Twilley song “I’m on Fire.” More on that later.  OK, let’s get this going. This is Tulsa Talks with David Molina.   ****Forty six years ago in April, Tulsa musician Dwight Twilley released his debut single “I’m on Fire,” which would go on to peak at No. 16 on the Billboard 100 in the summer of 1975. Fast forward to February 2020 when Golden Ones frontwoman Sarah Frick stood at the microphone ready to put her touch on the Twilley classic. Inside the late Leon Russell’s famed Paradise Studio, Frick sang about how you ain’t got no lover while surrounded by an all-star slate of current Tulsa musicians helping bring the song and Tulsa’s rich music history back to life as part of Horton Record’s “Back to Paradise: A Tulsa Tribute to Okie Music,” now available at HortonRecords.org. I love the original version, but Frick’s cover might replace it as my go-to version. There’s just something about her vocals that transforms the song into a bluesy, more soulful, more rock n roll version, and of course it helps to have Jesse Aycock and Paul Benjaman on the guitars. After enjoying this song make sure you check out the video directed by Justin France and 8X8 Productions. I really hope I get to hear her perform this live somewhere around Tulsa soon. Speaking of which, you can always find the latest Tulsa Music Listings at TulsaPeople.com. Here is Sarah Frick’s “I’m on Fire.”   ****This episode produced by Morgan Phillips and Tim Landes.

This was a seriously thrilling gig from UK Mod-Punks The Jam, six months after the Elvis Costello show in November 1978 (EP8: This Year’s Model). It also coincided with a fresh tray of live concert firsts (A gig outside of London! In Toronto! At a tiny theatre! With an authentic ***punk*** audience!). The Jam’s debut LP “In The City” was the first punk rock album I purchased, on a visit to the UK in 1977, and I became an instant fan. Between 1978-82, Weller & Co. shared the “My Favourite Band” mantle along with The Clash (Joy Division made it threesome by 1980), and so I was almost verklempt at getting to see my fave raves in Toronto. The trio were still fairly obscure over here while they were full-blown stars in the UK. And boy did they deliver! Tune in for winklepickers, opening act confusion, and … the magic returns. NEXT PODCAST: My last live show of the 1970s was an even smaller and more intimate gig than The Jam, featuring a trio of the city’s then most-prominent punk bands: NFG, The Regulators, and Sinners.I’ll be discussing how important our local scene --- but also local music scenes in general --- were and are, especially to and for marginalized people and communities.1979 was the year I started seeing local live music in bars such as The Cedar Lounge and The York, something that would become akin to “breathing” in my life during the 80s and early 90s. These nights out and this show pointed to where things in my life were going to be going on a more personal level.Stay tuned for underage drinking, musical lifelines, and escaping before the police turned up. Ep. 11: 6 Rick Springfield Songs You'll Dig If You Like "Jessie's Girl"

RockPopandRoll / Episode 11 Remember Jessie’s Girl? #1 in 1981?  It is the iconic power pop song that threw musician Rick Springfield, a musician on lean times, back into the music game. He’d been in music since the late 60’s in Australia. A rocker, blessed and cursed. Great looking dude, with the “I’m on a TV show albatross” to carry.  He was a career songwriter and guitar guy who had already waded through the teen idol swamp and come out OK.  Mostly. This week on RockPopandRoll, our show is: Power Pop and Rick Springfield: Here’s 6 Songs You’ll Love if you Dig Jessie’s Girl” Host Rob Nichols, a radio vet and longtime music writer, revisits rock and roll and pop music from the playlist of the decade of the 80s I get it.  Here’s the common word on Rick Springfield  - he isn’t a legitimate rock and roll guy. I call bullshit.  If you take the music he has made, especially from 1981 to now, he qualifies.  A couple bigtime hits.  A dozen stellar pop, rock, and power pop songs that cracked the top 40.  And a career that he revived in the late 90s and still has rolling.  Springfield sometimes tries too hard with overwrought lyrics.  Heavy handed.  A bit cliché.  And some of his music, when he is not trafficking in the sugary, rocking thing, it doesn’t work well.  There’s stuff he has put out – in his heyday of 1981-86 or so, and in some of his more recent albums, that is sincere but just doesn’t hit it his pocket for me.  Like he tries too hard. But then there’s the Rick Springfield that is a star because of the Working Class Dog record, a wholly under-appreciated power pop album – a genre part of rock and roll and radio rock in the late 70s through 1983 or so.  The album had “Jessie’s Girl”, “I’ve Done Everything For You”, a minor hit in “Love Is Alright Tonight”, and a bucketful of non-hit, guitar rock and pop songs.  It was as good as it really got if you liked the Cars, Rockpile, Cheap Trick, The Greg Kihn band, the Knack, the Romantics, Phil Seymour, and Dwight Twilley. Harmonies, guitars, big drums, some 80s keyboards, and songs about love, girls, and heartache. If you turn it up when the guitar power chord solo comes around in the middle of “Jessie’s Girl”, here are 6 songs you will love. He’s at best when guitars dominate in a poppy, rocky, throwback-to-FM-radio hits way. Turn it up SONGS “Love Screws Me Up” “Light This Party Up “ “It’s Always Something”“Bruce” “Kristina” “I Hate Myself” LINKS Hear Spotify playlist: Rick Springfield  /  Six songs you’ll dig if you like “Jessie’s Girl” plus bonus cuts. One Last Fact We Learned: “I’ve Done Everything For You” The Working Class Dog rocker first appeared on Sammy Hagar’s 1978 concert album All Night Long before it would be a Top 10 hit for Springfield, a follow up to “Jessie’s Girl.” Springfield wasn’t the first person to consider “I’ve Done Everything For You” as cover material. Hagar says producer Keith Olsen brought it to Springfield after first trying to get Pat Benatar to do the track. They made of a demo of it, but they decided to use their own song, “Heartbreaker. Rick got the song.

Though the Dwight Twilley Band only had one hit (Twilley had another on his own), Twilley and partner Phil Seymour created an enduring and highly memorable brand of power pop that blended Beatlesque pop and Sun rockabilly “slapback” echo. Only a fraction of the band's early output was made available at the time, but these records are highly revered by power pop aficionados. According to the legend, Dwight Twilley met Phil Seymour in 1967 at a theater where they had gone to see the Beatles' “A Hard Day's Night.” After the film they immediately went to Twilley's house to start writing and recording. The two continued the partnership over the next several years, calling themselves Oister and recruiting another part-time member, Bill Pitcock IV, on lead guitar. After developing their sound in their homemade studio, “the Shop,” they decided to take a stab at professional recording and headed out to Nashville, though they ended up stopping first at the legendary Sun Studios. Jerry Phillips (Sam's son) was impressed enough to team them up with former Sun artist Ray Harris, who introduced them to “the Sun sound,” roughing up their Beatles-obsessed style a bit and creating a unique and endearing sound. The two signed to Shelter Records in 1974. Their first single, “I'm on Fire,” became a national hit in 1975, peaking at number 16, with relatively no promotion. During an appearance on American Bandstand, the band previewed what was to be the follow-up single, “Shark,” an equally infectious, hit-worthy rocker. The success of the film “Jaws” caused the label to reject the single, however, to keep them from becoming perceived as a cash-in novelty act. This was just the beginning of bad luck that would plague the group from that point on. Their follow-up single and completed album went unreleased for 18 months due to label problems, and a second album recorded in England was left unreleased altogether, creating a myth around the band in some circles while the general public quickly lost interest. The belated follow-up single, “You Were So Warm,” ended up failing due to distribution problems. Predictably, when the album “Sincerely” was finally released, it failed as well. Seymour and Twilley befriended the like-minded Tom Petty and contributed backing vocals on several tracks. Petty repaid the favor for their second album, “Twilley Don't Mind,” for Arista in 1977. Despite the once again unquestionably high quality of songs, the album stiffed as well. Seymour left the band the following year, pursuing a brief solo career before lymphoma cut his life short in 1993. Twilley carried on as a solo act, releasing “Twilley” for Arista in 1979 and “Scuba Divers” for EMI America in 1982, and found success again with “Jungle” in 1984, when he scored his second hit with “Girls.” His album “Wild Dogs” went unnoticed on its 1986 release by CBS Associated Records. In addition, Twilley recorded an album in 1980, “Blueprint,” that remains unreleased and contributed one track to the 1992 “Wayne's World” soundtrack, “Why You Want to Break My Heart.” In 1993, DCC released “The Great Lost Twilley Album,” which collected a fraction of the “hundreds” of unreleased songs Twilley and Seymour recorded in the early, ill-fated days. Two newly recorded songs appeared on the best-of collection “XXI” in 1996, and in 1999, Twilley released both another rarities collection, “Between the Cracks, Vol. 1” (Not Lame Archives), and his first new album in 13 years, “Tulsa” (Copper). In 2001, Twilley released “The Luck” (Big Oak), an album he had actually completed in 1994. The seasonal EP “Have a Twilley Christmas” (DMI) appeared in 2004, followed by Twilley's ninth studio album, “47 Moons,” in 2005. In 2007 he signed to Gigatone Records and a deluge of Twilley releases followed, including reissues of “Tulsa” and “47 Moons” (with bonus tracks), seven volumes of “Rarities” discs, and a compilation of tracks recorded after Twilley left CBS, Northridge to Tulsa. Today, we’ve got one from the vaults as Mike Vanderbilt talk with Chicago power pop luminary, John Pazdan. Pazdan was one of the founders of Oak Park’s premiere power pop act Pezband in 1971. Pazdan—primarily a bass player—played around town in numerous jazz, rock, and pop outfits including Chicago favorites Off Broadway. This interview was conducted in the spring of 2016 as Mike was preparing his Chicago Reader piece From Rockford To You An Oral history of Cheap Trick’s early years. Pazdan is currently playing with Pezband along side Mimi Betinis and Mick Rain and they will be appearing at The Arcada Theater Friday August 11th along side Dwight Twilley and Zion’s own Shoes. It was a fun chat and I hope you enjoy listening.

Some call it Power Pop, others call it melodic rock – either way, Dwight Twilley has been crafting like-minded tunes for over 40 years now. His first hit was the Top 20 smash “I’m On Fire” in 1975. Then, he was back in the Top 20 with “Girls” in 1984. Twilley had a knack for writing radio-ready songs and probably should’ve been a much bigger star, had it not been for record label blundering. Either way, he’s never stopped and is back with a brand new record called “Always.”

Hailing from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dwight Twilley teamed with Phil Seymour in the Dwight Twilley Band, hitting gold with their very first single, 1975’s “I’m On Fire” – lauded by the San Francisco Chronicle as “The best debut single by an American rock band ever.” But, a combination of dumb label decisions and bad luck prevented the band’s career from properly taking off. That didn’t stop Twilley – he’s into his fifth decade of making melodic rock n’ roll – and he’s just released a brand new record called Soundtrack. Inspired by a movie that’s currently in production about his life, Twilley turned inward to write 12 new songs about his long journey and ups & downs in the music business. Icon Fetch talks with the “father of power pop” about his band’s experience playing on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, the personal nature of these new songs, and the passing of longtime friend and guitarist Bill Pitcock, IV.
