Published on 20 Jan 2019. From the Digital Box Set: Over the lifetime of a company, mistakes happen. When those mistakes cause damage, it's appropriate for a brand to apologize. Yet, it rarely happens. This week, we look at the companies that chose to apologize. From O.B. Tampons, who apologized to their customers with a song, to Domino's Pizza, who was forced to apologize when employees made an embarrassing YouTube video, to Maple Leaf Foods, whose CEO apologized to the families of people who had died from contaminated food. If an apology is genuine and timely, sorry is definitely the smartest word. This is an archived episode that aired originally on May 19, 2012.

Lining up podcast guests can be quite the ordeal. Sometimes it literally take years before busy people accept an invitation, if they reply at all. Terry O'Reilly, arguably someone who's in high-demand was such a guest, his wife and producer, albeit a lovely person, kept telling that it may or may not happen a number of times until I decided to give up. Low and behold, about 6 months after I threw in the towel, I received an email asking "are you still interested in interviewing Terry?" Needless to say I put my little bruised ego aside and quickly obliged. The moral of the story is that persistence is key and sometimes, even after you give up, things will still happen. At the end of the day I hold no grudge with Terry or his producer, they were just safeguarding his time for the important work he does and ultimately I'm glad it worked out because this is one of my favourite interviews to date. Without further ado, check out the penultimate Truth is Golden episode for yourself, it'll be worth your while. --- I want to give a special shout-out to Natasha Lebel, who initially turned me onto Terry's long-time podcast "Under the Influence" to which I took an immediate liking and have been a rabid fan of ever since. About the podcast: The intent behind our podcast series "Truth Is Golden" is to look at renowned creatives and their work with a critical eye. We aim to ask deep questions in order to peel back the layers of marketing, clever one-liners and sexy branding. We want to show the world what it truly takes for genuinely creative forces to find their own voice build a career on what is very often nothing more than a drive to do things differently. We want to hear about the successes, the failures, the inspirational stories and the lessons gleaned from all of it. We want the truth, so that we can inspire other people to fulfill their own creative aspirations and in the process contribute to making the world a better place.

Our interview with the CBC Under the Influence podcast host Terry O'Reilly!
Here is a clip from our interview with CBC Podcast and Radio Host Terry O'Reilly!
Terry O'Reilly is a radio guy. He will tell you on the show that he is an ad guy - and that might be partially true. However, it is apparent that when you listen to his take on the world of media, advertising, marketing and radio, that he is grounded in radio. His show, Under the Influence, which grew from its previous incarnation of The Age of Persuasion (2006-2011) and O'Reilly on Advertising (2005). The show is now in its eighth season on CBC Radio and has expanded further into the podcast world.Terry and his wife Debbie, along with daughters Callie, Shea and Sidney work on the program year round to create some of the most amazing audio about marketing. The show has developed a loyal following from countless Canadians and listeners around the world. Here are some things in the show we learned:The show's idea came about over beers one day which involved Larry McInnis who was the creative director at CHUM in Toronto. As a complete aside, Larry is a graduate of Acadia University which is where I went to school. :)There is a Beatles reference in every show. That information lives on the Wikipedia page but Terry confirmed that he is a big fan and in his most recent episode spoke about how John Lennon was the best marketer amongst the Beatles.Terry is starting a company for podcasters... details will be announced soon but we were stoked that he announced that on our podcast. As we mentioned at the outset, Terry is a radio guy. When I asked him to come on the podcast he was aware of the show and had taken in a few episodes. High praise!Podcast aficionados will love hearing how Terry has embraced podcasting. The entire back catalogue of Under The Influence is now available in Podcast form. Connect to it here. Terry also gives Ben the scoop on an exciting new project! The full archive of Terry's Under the Influence is now available for free, wherever you get your podcasts. About the Guest Terry O'Reilly began his career as Copy Chief for FM108 Radio in Burlington, Ontario, where he discovered that with meticulous planning and attention to detail, you can still fall flat on your face. With that learning, he went on to become an award-winning copywriter for Toronto advertising agencies Campbell-Ewald, Doyle Dane Bernbach and Chiat/Day. He created campaigns for many of the top brands in the country, including Labatt, Molson, Pepsi USA, Goodyear Tires, Tim Hortons, Volkswagen, Nissan and the Hudson’s Bay Company. In demand as a keynote speaker, Terry talks about key marketing issues all companies and organizations face – from the critical need to embed emotion in marketing, to why customer service = profit, to how to change a negative perception, to why smart marketers don’t outspend their competitors – they outsmart them. He served on the inaugural Radio Jury at the Cannes International Advertising Festival in 2005, and was named chairman of the following award show juries: The Marketing Awards (Co-Chair) Canada The International Clio Awards in Miami The London International Advertising Awards When he’s not creating advertising, he’s talking about it as the host of the award-winning CBC Radio One/Sirius Satellite/WBEZ Chicago radio show, Under The Influence, which is the follow-up to the hit series, The Age of Persuasion. The New York Radio Festivals awarded his show the Grand Prize as Best Radio Program in 2011 and again in 2012, and iTunes chose it as “Best New Podcast of 2011” and one of the Best Podcasts of 2015. TMAY listeners already know that Louis is full of wonder, tricks and surprises, but perhaps his greatest surprise so far is how he manages to get Terry O’Reilly from CBC’s Under the Influence to take time off to do our show. (Seems as if Louis’ connections run far and deep.) O’Reilly chooses two classic comediesThe Party and The In-Laws which leaves us open to talk about three comic (and dramatic) greats Peter Sellers, Alan Arkin, and Peter Falk. Customer service shouldn't be a foreign word to public relations and commuications professionals. Although we might not always be face to face with our organization's customers, their happiness often decides the fate of your communications department and organization. This week, Kristine D'Arbelles and Julia Kent explore the old saying "the customer is always right" and how it applies to PR and communications. We got our inspiration from one of our favourite podcasters, Terry O'Reilly, host of CBC's Under The Influence. On Under the Influence, Terry explores the critical shift from a century of overt one-way messaging to a new-world order of two-way dialogue. Most recently, Terry did an episode called Tales of Customer Service. He talked about an amusement park that delivered such superior customer service that other corporations asked for lessons, a shoe company you can order a pizza from and a store that actually accepted a returned product they didn't even sell just to keep their customer happy. Not only are the stories in Terry's episode fascinating, but it reminds us that good customer service equals good communications, and vise versa. People remember people, not products, so what better way to solidify an emotional relationship with your audience than through good customer service. We would love to hear your thoughts? Do you have a good/bad customer service story? How do you incorporate customer service in to your strategic plans?
