Dennis is joined via Zoom my playwright Audrey Cefaly & Actor Carolyn Messina from the play Alabaster, which is showing at the Fountain Theater in Los Angeles through March 30th. The play is a darkly Southern tale about a woman named June and her two goats who all survived an Alabama tornado and lived to tell the tale. June's sheltered world is rocked when a New York photographer named Alice comes to photograph her on her farm for an art project and a romance blooms. Oh, and one of the goats, Weezy (played by Carolyn) talks. In the interview, Audrey talks about how the play was inspired by a random image that popped into her head, of a scar-covered woman in a bed and how it then evolved into a love story between two very different women. Carolyn talks about researching goats to prepare for the role of Weezy and how she learned, among other things, that goats have four stomachs. Other topics include: how the two have been friends and collaborators since their high school drama days, the thrill of getting your play published by Samuel French, getting 11 productions of the play produced across the country as a recipient of the NNPN Rolling World Premier program, why their partnership works and meeting audience members after the show and having them share their own stories then ask for a hug.

This week, March 17, marks 54 years since the premiere of the groundbreaking film The Boys in the Band. Set in a New York apartment in the 1960s and based on the play by Mort Crowley, it was one of the first major movies to feature majority-queer characters. And to mark that 54th birthday, for this week's Sewers of Paris I wanted to revisit my conversation with someone who knew the world of 60s Greenwich Village very well, playwright Robert Patrick.Robert wandered into the Village as an unsuspecting young gay man in the 1960s. He was only supposed to be there for a day, but he wound up staying for years, witnessing -- and participating in -- one of the most important periods in American theater history. He passed away last year, having written hundreds of plays — as Samuel French called him, “New York's most-produced playwright.”We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, a quick reminder that if you like this podcast, you'll probably enjoy my other projects — like my YouTube videos about movies and TV shows, my weekly livestreams on Twitch, my book Hi Honey, I'm Homo!, and my email newsletter. Naturally, he first started writing for the theater and three of his plays were published by Samuel French. His short story, “The Schitzle Connection” won first prize in the Oklahoma City Writer's Contest and was later published by Twit Publishing (Winter/Spring 2011 Edition). His vast range of experience includes writing and producing several musicals, vocal recording for Painted Smiles Records, and “Draw Me A Circle” a song he wrote on Barbra Streisand's Third Album. Some of his most notable performances were Divorce Me Darling in London and Once Upon a Mattress, where he played the king's son opposite the great Buster Keaton. As a line producer on F. Lee Bailey's show, Lie Detector, Cy was exposed to the criminal element which provided inspiration for some of his characters and fictional storylines. During his time with the show, Cy co-produced one of the most famous segments featuring Caril Ann Fugate. Bailey interviewed Caril Ann about her alleged co-conspiracy with Charles Starkweather, and she passed the lie detector test helping prove her innocence. Christine Evans' Nadia (U Iowa Press, 2023) is a dark novel about how the trauma of war follows people no matter how far they've fled. A few years after the Balkan War, two refugees from Sarajevo are temping in the same questionable London office. Nadia, who is Bosnian, is unhinged by memories of starvation, deprivation, and losing everyone she loved, including her family and her girlfriend, Sanja. She sees potential snipers and visions of Sanja throughout London, sometimes becoming unhinged by it. All she has is her office friends, and the Indian family where she has tea with buns every day. Iggy was a Serbian sniper who gunned down Bosnians as part of a militaristic street gang, but he justifies all the innocent people he kills by weighing them against the people he saved by distracting his friends or purposefully missing. They're both forced to confront their choices during the chaotic days of the war, but Nadia still struggles with survivor's guilt, the ethical choices she made in taking a job in a shady office, and her queer sexuality. Christine Evans writes internationally produced plays, opera libretti, and fiction. Christine's theater and opera work has been staged at the Sydney Opera House, the American Repertory Theater and many other venues, and her plays are published by Samuel French. She is a multiple MacDowell fellow, VCCA fellow, and a recipient of several DC Council on the Arts & Humanities Fellowships. Originally from Australia, she is a Professor of Performing Arts at Georgetown University, and lives in Washington, DC. She loves the ocean beyond all reason, dreams of dividing her time (as they say on the book jackets) between DC and Australia and has just dusted off her mandolin to start playing music again. New 2022 - The Convenient Truth - Glen Merzer GlenMerzer • https://www.glenmerzer.com • Book – Food Is Climate #GlenMerzer#ClimateEmergency  #ClimateChange Glen Merzer is a playwright, screenwriter, and author of the book Food is Climate. Food Is Climate: A Response to Al Gore, Bill Gates, Paul Hawken, and the Conventional Narrative on Climate Change. The Climate Emergency threatens civilization. All life forms on the planet depend now on humanity to undo the harm it has done. Unfortunately, those who have been leading the charge to address climate change, such as Al Gore, have not been telling us the whole truth. They have continued to ignore its leading cause. Food Is Climate gives us hope that the crisis can be addressed--in a way that will improve human health--but only if there's a grassroots movement to do the right thing, because clearly politicians and even environmental organizations have refused to lead. Glen began his career as a stand-up comic in San Francisco before devoting himself to playwriting. He wrote for network television for many years before going into a career writing books that advocate the plant-exclusive diet.Glen's first novel, Off the Reservation, chronicles the journey of a vegan congressman from Bloomington, Indiana, who runs for president. Off the Reservation contains twenty bonus, delicious, low-fat vegan recipes by Joanna Samorow-Merzer. Three of Glen's plays have been published by Samuel French. His prize-winning works have entertained audiences Off-Broadway, at Regional Theatres, and at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Glen co-author books include, Mad Cowboy No More Bull! The Secrets to Ultimate Weight Loss UnprocessedFood Over Medicine Better Than Vegan The Plant Advantage by Benji Kurtz. The Secrets to Ultimate Weight Loss The Happy Cow Cookbook Own Your Health To Contact Glen Merzer go to Glen Merzer https://www.glenmerzer.com CLICK HERE - To Checkout Our MEMBERSHIP CLUB: http://www.realtruthtalks.com  • Social Media ChannelsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TRTAHConferenceInstagram : https://www.instagram.com/therealtruthabouthealth/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/RTAHealth Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-real-truth-about-health-conference/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheRealTruthAboutHealth    • Check out our Podcasts  Visit us on Apple Podcast and Itunes search:  The Real Truth About Health Free 17 Day Live Online Conference Podcast Amazon: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/23a037be-99dd-4099-b9e0-1cad50774b5a/real-truth-about-health-live-online-conference-podcastSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0RZbS2BafJIEzHYyThm83J Google:https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5zaW1wbGVjYXN0LmNvbS8yM0ZqRWNTMg%3D%3DStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/real-truth-about-health-live-online-conference-podcastAudacy: https://go.audacy.com/partner-podcast-listen-real-truth-about-health-live-online-conference-podcastiHeartRadio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-real-truth-about-health-li-85932821/ Deezer: https://www.deezer.com/us/show/2867272 Reason: https://reason.fm/podcast/real-truth-about-health-live-online-conference-podcast • Other Video ChannelsYoutube:https://www.youtube.com/c/TheRealTruthAboutHealthVimeo:https://vimeo.com/channels/1733189Rumble:  https://rumble.com/c/c-1111513 Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/TRTAHConference/videos/?ref=page_internal DailyMotion: https://www.dailymotion.com/TheRealTruthAboutHealth BitChute:  https://www.bitchute.com/channel/JQryXTPDOMih/ Disclaimer:Medical and Health information changes constantly. LA CAGE AUX FOLLES COMPOSER: Jerry Herman LYRICIST: Jerry Herman BOOK: Harvey Fierstein SOURCE: Jean Poriot's play La Cage Aux Folles (1973) DIRECTOR: Arthur Laurents CHOREOGRAPHER: Scott Salmon PRINCIPLE CAST: Gene Barry (Georges), George Hearn (Albin), John Weiner (Jean-Michel) OPENING DATE: Aug 21, 1983 CLOSING DATE: Nov 15, 1987 PERFORMANCES: 1,761 SYNOPSIS: La Cage Aux Folles is a drag club owned by George and Albin, two men who have been together for twenty years. When Georges' son Jean-Michel arrives and announces he is engaged to the daughter of a homophobic politician, Georges and Albin must try to decide how they will deal with their son's intolerance.  Comparing early responses to Queer representation in film and cinema from French and American audiences, Robert W. Schneider sets the scene for the opening of La Cage Aux Folles, Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein's musical adaptation of a French farce featuring the first leading homosexual couple for the Broadway musical. Director Arthur Laurents was staunch in his desire that the show refrain from seeming overtly political, desiring instead to present an old-fashioned musical which featured a gay love story. This chapter details the positive impact La Cage Aux Folles had on LGBTQIA+ representation worldwide, it also touches on how the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s dampered the optimistic tone set by the musical. Robert W. Schneider holds academic appointments at Penn State University, New York Film Academy, and Mount Union University, as well as serving as the Artistic Director for The J2 Spotlight Musical Theater Company and as an original programming producer at Feinstein's/54 Below in New York City. He is the host of the podcasts Behind The Curtain: Broadway's Living Legends, Gay Card Revoked, and This Was A Thing. THE WIZ COMPOSER: Charlie Smalls LYRICIST: Charlie Smalls BOOK: William F. Brown SOURCE: L. Frank Baum's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) DIRECTOR: Geoffrey Holder CHOREOGRAPHER: George Faison PRINCIPLE CAST: Andre DeShields (The Wiz), Mabel King (Evillene), Stephanie Mills (Dorothy),  OPENING DATE: Jan 5, 1975 CLOSING DATE: Jan 28, 1979 PERFORMANCES: 1,672 SYNOPSIS: During a violent tornado, Dorothy is transported from Kansas to the magical land of Oz. In order to go back home she must first speak with The Wiz. Accompanied by her friends The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, and The Cowardly Lion, Dorothy begins an adventure down the Yellow Brick Road to meet the Wiz.  Accessing the universal themes in L Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Wiz retold the classic story through a contemporary African-American lens. The show proved the potential for success in big-budget, fantasy stories with all Black casts. Jerrell L. Henderson traces the modes in which Black creatives and audiences were relegated to segregated theatres, how Black performers were cast in shows written by white individuals, and how marketing of musicals became focused on Black communities in relation to The Wiz.  Jerrell L. Henderson is a Director and Puppeteer. Upcoming Puppet Short Films include, Hamlin: La Revue Sombre with Handmade Puppet Dreams and Diamond's Dream with Chicago Children's Theatre. He performed his signature puppetry piece, I Am The Bear, this fall with Chicago International Puppet Festival's Living Room Tours. OF THEE I SING COMPOSER: George Gershwin LYRICIST: Ira Gershwin BOOK: George S. Kaufman, Morrie Ryskind DIRECTOR: George S. Kaufman CHOREOGRAPHER: Chester Hale PRINCIPLE CAST: William Gaxton (Wintergreen), Victor Moore (Throttlebottom), Lois Moran (Mary) OPENING DATE: Dec 26, 1931 CLOSING DATE: Jan 14, 1933 PERFORMANCES: 441 SYNOPSIS: John P Wintergreen is a presidential candidate who needs a wife. When a national contest is held to find a potential bride, Wintergreen is paired with America's sweetheart Diana Deveraux, but he soon realizes that he is in love with Mary Turner, the contest's organizer.   Of Thee I Sing is the result of George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind's desire to write a musical satire with George and Ira Gershwin that could criticize the United States' political party system without being watered down for mainstream audiences. Apart from its satirical comedy, the musical is notable for the way the score and lyrics tie in closely with the rest of the libretto, its long stretches without songs aside from underscoring, and its early use of projection on the American stage. Additionally, this musical marks the first pairing of the theatrical team William Gaxton and Victor Moore. The show was an immediately popular success in its Boston tryout and subsequent New York run, earning praise from critics, audiences, and even the politicians evidently ridiculed by the storyline. Ultimately, Of Thee I Sing was recognized for its innovative achievements by becoming the first musical to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, a controversial decision which helped to elevate the artform of musical comedy and pave the way for more inventive musicals to follow. Laura Frankos outlines the ways Of Thee I Sing was a theatrical endeavor with a lasting impact. Laura Frankos is the author of The Broadway Musical Quiz Book (Applause Books, 2010). She is a regular contributor to CastAlbumReviews.com, and previously authored a blog on unusual musical theatre history, The Great White Wayback Machine. She has also written a mystery novel, St. Oswald's Niche, and short fiction in the science fiction and fantasy genres. Her latest novel, Broadway Revival (2022), has a time traveler curing Gershwin's tumor and altering the course of Golden Age Broadway. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, novelist Harry Turtledove. In this episode I explore the interaction between Jesus and the Roman Centurion with my good friend Samuel French. Samuel has a unique perspective when it comes to the Bible and doesn't allow boxed thinking to limit his views. He's also a lot of fun to chat with! Why does Jesus praise the faith of this Empire employee? Why is this story here? Jesus doesn't ever seem to let us decide who is in and who is out. He always makes space for the nuance of being human.

As movie theaters across the country are about to go through another metamorphosis point after having been largely empty this last year, now seems as good a time as any to revisit the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama about three workers at a single-screen movie theater in New England. A Favor for Freddie

On todays episode we hear a story not often talked about, one most women who have experienced, don't share. The grief and emotional pain that comes with the finality of losing a piece of yourself, and the gift of redefining what it means to be a woman in the shadow of societies standards.

A roller-coaster ride on steroid-rails that explores the meaning of life, serial killers, and "an overhaul rethinking for the strategic management of the clown college" - because contemporary clown college is not your mother's clown college anymore! Today's short story was written by Raymond King Shurtz who is a Director, Designer, Playwright, Teacher, Actor, and Musician. For this episode I'm joined by playwright Karen Zacarías for a conversation on playwriting and Marvel's Squirrel Girl. Zacarías is one of our country's most produced playwrights, and among her latest plays is “Squirrel Girl Goes to College: A Squirrel Girl Play,” developed with Marvel as part of their new Marvel Spotlight collection. Marvel Spotlight, which also includes plays by Christian Borle and Masi Asare, is a new collection of short plays from Marvel and Samuel French aimed at students and young adults. And in Zacarías's play Squirrel Girl, whose real name is Doreen Green, must battle the likes of Doctor Doom and other villains all while trying to maintain a normal life as a college freshman. If you're not familiar with Squirrel Girl and her super strength, sharp claws, and power to communicate with squirrels—don't worry. In this interview Zacarías will tell you all you need to know about this powerful and comedic hero who's always down to “eat nuts and kick butts.” She also describes what it's like to write a play for Marvel, creating positive role models for young women, and what animal she would command if she, too, could commune with wildlife. Whether you're into theater—or even if you're not and just into Marvel and the comic books, movies, or video games—I think you're really going to like this conversation.
