In one of our recent episodes, I had the pleasure of chatting with Chris Do, an Emmy award-winning designer, CEO, and chief strategist of Blind. Chris is also the founder of The Futur, an online educational platform that aims to teach one billion people how to make a living doing what they love. Today, I want to share with you some of the key insights from our conversation. Chris is a legendary figure in the world of branding and graphic design, with over 15 years of teaching experience at prestigious art and design colleges. During our chat, he emphasized the importance of building an emotional connection with customers. According to Chris, successful branding lies in understanding and catering to the unique values and interests of different clients. This approach can help businesses move away from the commoditization trap and towards value-based pricing. Speaking of value-based pricing, Chris advocates for a shift from pricing based on labor hours to pricing based on the value delivered to the client. He believes that different clients have different values and interests, and pricing should reflect that. For example, someone may value a logo differently based on their financial situation. We also discussed the role of branding in local businesses, the importance of efficient systems and exceptional customer service, and the significance of investing in research and development and marketing services. Chris's insights into branding and marketing strategies, particularly for creative professionals, were truly eye-opening. His expertise and experience make him a highly respected figure in the industry, and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from him. I hope you find these insights as valuable as I did.

They realized that for the business to get the market share they wanted, they needed to have an East Coast office. They rented a small office and renovated it. They hired an office manager, an executive producer, and a creative director to run it for them. No one from the West Coast office wanted to live on the East Coast. So they had to run two offices incurring double the expenses, but we're still not growing their revenue. Now they were shrinking profit. This happened over five years. The company was putting more money into the East Coast office year after year with no reliable revenue. There is an age-old debate on which is more important marketing or branding. Those which a marketing background tend to have a bias toward marketing versus designers who tend to have a bias toward branding. The truth is everything comes down to how you define marketing and how you define branding. These two are not in competition with one another but are compliments. There is no way you can implement marketing without branding, and a brand can only grow if it utilizes marketing in the right way. So what does this mean? Marketing is the tactics and strategy used to gain people's attention, while branding is about creating consistent experiences to build trust in your customer's/client's mind. Once you are clear on the definition of both marketing and branding than how each impacts your business becomes all the more clear. "It's 100% about relationships. Probably the most important part of Mitchell Bat is the people I've met along the way that I consider true friends or trusted advisors." Jeremy Mitchell, agency creative director, web designer and most notably founder of Mitchell Bat Co., joined the podcast for episode 100 to discuss his passion project; a company that provides custom, hand-painted wooden bats to passionate & passive baseball fans, corporations and brands alike. Jeremy discusses how his college degree in sports management, playing in a band in college and a crush on a graphic design major (who eventually became his wife) eventually led him to pursue a post-grad career in design. A passionate baseball fan, Jeremy created a mockup of a hand-painted, striped bat one night and posted to his Instagram. The post got some likes and requests on where to purchase the bat, whom fans thought was a real physical product. Thus began the quest to start Mitchell Bat Co. We discuss the social mission of MBCo, how a conscious effort should be put into building a brand, and how passion projects lead to incredible opportunities and collaborations that one would not always expect or receive from a full-time paying job. Lastly, we discuss the value of relationships and how important they are to any career, let alone a side project. Mentions Include: Mitchell Bat Co. Twitter Mitchell Bat Co. Chris Do elaborates on why creative people should value their services more and charge accordingly without feeling guilty.
"Designer as maker is what is celebrated in school, not designer as entrepreneur; designer as business problem solver. To me, when you're in the mechanics, when you have your hands in the work, it's all production and I make no distinction between doing that versus becoming a brick layer." Creative therapy. That's how I refer to this episode as it takes us down a path MoS hasn't been on before. Chris Do, Emmy award winning creative director, entrepreneur and founder of TheFutur & Blind studio, joins the pod to share his views on many topics including higher education, entrepreneurship, money, self-worth, depression, and how designers can win the battle of business. We come in hot discussing the often divisive topic of higher education and wonder if a college degree is important any longer. Chris also discusses the value of time and we why should understand that value is in the eye of the beholder and oftentimes, we aren't the beholder of the work we create. Lastly, we discuss the modern state of design criticism and how if designers want to win in the war of business, we have to start thinking more about strategy and less about aesthetics. “The Internet is a great tool but you can only learn so much. Actually going to a place physically where you have someone that has [designed] at the highest level, you learn so much more…that experience is invaluable.” FYI: Sneakers are a passion of mine. It's no secret. This episode is quite nerdy on the sneaker talk. Xavier Jones, footwear designer at Reebok, joined the podcast to discuss the footwear design industry and his path to designing for athletes like Shaq and Allen Iverson. Xavier's story begins in the Michigan basketball mecca of Flint. He let's us in on his story and how SLAM Magazine, And One and Ballislife inspired and led him to pursue a dream of designing sneakers for a living. We chat about some of our favorite kicks, discuss the evolution of the Jordan Brand, reminisce about the prime of the And One Mixtape and discuss how sport influences mainstream culture and hence sneaker culture.
