Since 1985, when the first pair of Air Jordan's were released to the public, the Jordan brand has stood at the intersection of culture, design excellence, and self-expression. Today, Jason Mayden, Chief Design Officer of the Jordan brand at Nike, is ushering in the next era. Jason, who grew up on the South Side of Chicago, started as an intern at Nike and worked his way up to lead the design of iconic shoes for the Jordan brand. In this episode of Building One, Tomer Cohen sits down with Jason to discuss the power of emotional connection in product design. Jason shares his philosophy that great design goes beyond product features—it's about how a product makes people feel about themselves. He explains why emotional resonance, rather than just performance specs, is the key to building lasting brand loyalty and remaining culturally relevant. Jason also opens up about his neurodivergence, explaining how embracing his unique cognitive strengths has helped him innovate and excel in design. He shares how understanding his brain wiring allowed him to think differently and bring fresh perspectives to Nike's product creation process. Part of Jason's approach is fostering creativity by involving non-design functions—like HR and legal—early in the process. He believes that bringing in fresh perspectives from across the company can lead to more innovative products and a stronger sense of ownership across teams. Finally, Jason emphasizes the importance of a growth mindset, a principle he learned from Michael Jordan himself. He shares how continuously learning and evolving is crucial for long-term success, both for individuals and brands. Follow Jason Mayden on LinkedIn. Ready to be captivated by the art of resilience and power of creativity? Our guest, Jason Mayden, takes us on an journey through the intersection of design and culture. We step into a realm where self-determination fuels the potential of our youth and the power of servitude and its role as an act of altruistic rebellion, and its significance in a culture of love. Jason joins Ruben to explore the complexities of resilience and self-acceptance, unraveling their role in shaping our relationship with ourselves and others. Drawing lessons from the life of Michael Jordan, Jason dives deep into the power of divine providence in shaping our destiny and what it was like working side-by-side with one of the greatest champions of all time. Jason offers unique insights into the misunderstandings surrounding design and its potential as an asset class. We take a look at the advantages of the barter system, the importance of self-assessment, and how learning technical language can boost creativity. Lastly, we reflect on the importance of fostering a culture of love and the power of pivoting in the face of challenges. How does Jason live through love? “Unconditional love requires me to let go and forgive a lot. The way that we're mostly oppressed is through anchoring ourselves or tethering ourselves to the spirit of offense. And once you allow the world to offend you now you get walking around with justifications for your anger and your rage and everything is just like well, yeah, of course. And that just robs you of your ability to contribute to the tapestry of humanity.” "To pull something from your imagination and to have the audacity to put it into the real world. Repeatedly Like it takes a certain amount of youthfulness, it takes a certain amount of resilience, it takes a certain amount of self-determination, because you constantly have to fight against your insecurities in order to keep producing." - Jason Mayden ----- In this episode, you will learn… The Power of Resilience: Jason explains how resilience and self-determination are key attributes in unlocking potential in our youth and fostering a culture of love. Importance of Creativity: The conversation explores the intricate role of design in creativity and education. Jason argues that creativity is not just about skills or talent but about asking the right questions and problem-solving. Influence of Sports Figures: Mayden draws inspiration from sports icons like Michael Jordan, emphasizing the importance of dedication, loyalty, and the concept of meritocracy. Significance of Love and Restraint: The episode discusses the power of divine providence and how our creative endeavors can shape our destinies, highlighting the importance of delayed gratification, unconditional love, and the strength in exercising restraint. ----- "Design for me is not the act of creativity, it's the questions we ask. Designers ask the best questions and if you ask the right question you can get an answer that helps the most amount of people.” - Jason Mayden About the guest: Jason Mayden is MS Designer, Entrepreneur-In-Residence at Accel Partners, CEO + Founder Super Heroic, and Media Design Lecturer at Stanford d.school. On this episode of Professional Troublemaker, host Luvvie Ajayi Jones is talking to legendary shoe-designer and President of Fear of God Athletics, Jason Mayden. In this episode, they discuss Jason’s journey from designing girl’s names in bubble letters to designing shoes for Nike at 21. Jason describes his design strategy as “looking for the narrative”. Instead of looking at other products for inspiration, he sees products as artifacts that tell a story. And when it comes to presenting these ideas, he has had to kill impostor syndrome and advocate for himself. They converse about the urge to give in to impostor syndrome, the process of recognizing mediocrity, and the realization of belonging in a room. Jason describes Professional Troublemaking as being an accomplice--not an ally---and believes the world needs Professional Troublemakers in order to take risks and say the inconvenient thing at the inconvenient time. Kick back in your favorite kicks and enjoy this episode of Professional Troublemaker with iconic Chicagoan, Jason Mayden. ***Follow @Luvvie everywhere – Instagram, Facebook, Twitter. As we head into a new year—and leave behind a year that was challenging for just about everyone on the planet, with the hope that this year will be better for all—we wanted to share an interview with one of the most optimistic, creative, and insightful people we know: designer, entrepreneur, and educator Jason Mayden. When we first interviewed Jason in 2018 for one of our Design Better Conversations, we knew we had to get him on the podcast. He had such a unique perspective on design as a service to humanity that we sensed our audience would love to hear his story. We spoke with Jason on a wide range of topics, from how a near-death experience in childhood shaped his career and life, to how he maintains his energy and focus, to why being a polymath is an enormous advantage in today’s job market. We finish the interview on a topic that strays a little from our usual subjects but is ultimately more important: how through all of our individual struggles we can benefit from recognizing our shared humanity. Takeaways: Learn what drove Jason to create his company SuperHeroic, and what he took away from the process. Hear how servant leadership shapes his work and creativity. Understand how Jason designs his life using tools like creative direction and brand strategy, Bio In his previous role at Nike, Jason oversaw the design and execution of all conceptual products, data-driven innovations, and inline lifestyle and performance product for Jordan Brand, as the Senior Global Design Director. During his 13+ year career at Nike, Mayden led and contributed to the creation of innovative sport performance products for athletes and cultural icons such as Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Derek Jeter, and Michael Jordan. In 2011, Mayden successfully received his Master’s in General Management and Social Innovation from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business and shortly thereafter he returned to Nike as the Global Director of Innovation for Nike's Digital Sport division where he was responsible for the strategic investigation of new technologies and services, such as the Nike Fuel Band and the Nike+ platform. Currently, Jason is an advisor, d.Fellow and Media Designer at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford University, a frequent lecturer at Stanford University’s prestigious Graduate School of Business, and an advisory board member to his undergraduate alma mater, the College for Creative Studies.
Jason Mayden – Designer, Nike Location: Giordano's in Chicago, IL When Jason Mayden grew up on the South Side of Chicago, he dreamed of being like Michael Jordan. Instead, he went on to design shoes for him. His Nike Air Monarch became the highest grossing shoe of all time. Jason takes us to Giordano’s Deep Dish pizza to tell us why this Chicago comfort food staple is also symbolic of why he loves this city and how it fueled his imagination and dreams. Jason’s neighborhood is one of the most dangerous in the city yet he believes the perceived negative aspects became strategic advantages for him in business and life. Caught up with Jason Mayden to talk about his design philosophies, entrepreneurship, the skills he's developed over time, and where he sees the future potential for creatives. Before graduating from the College of Creative Studies in Detroit,MI, Mayden relentlessly pursued an opportunity to work at Nike, ultimately becoming the first African-American to become a design intern at Nike's Beaverton, OR, headquarters. While working at Nike for 13 years, Mayden designed iconic footwear for athletes like Michael Jordan, working as both Jordan Brand's Senior Global Design Director and Director of Innovation for Nike's Digital Sport division. To add to his list of accomplishments during those Nike years, Mayden also pursued a masters degree from Stanford University Graduate School of Business at the same time. After Nike, he became the Vice President of Design at Mark One before co-founding Super Heroic, whose mission is to enrich and empower the lives of children and their parents through play. Mayden is a fellow and media designer at Stanford University's Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (also known as the d.School), a frequent lecturer at Stanford's Graduate School of Business, a regular columnist and blogger for Hypebeast Magazine and hypebeast.com and an advisory board member to his undergraduate alma mater, the College for Creative Studies.

Unexpected Connections was a conference hosted by Imprint and MAEKAN which happened November 7, 2018 in Long Beach, California. In this episode, Eugene and Charis discuss what went well, what could be improved on, and what lessons they’ve learned. Unexpected connections are the simplest way of describing creativity. In its most basic form, it’s pattern recognition, and at its most complex, it’s a tangled web that humans have become surprisingly great at deconstructing. The conference brought together people from disparate walks of life to speak in conversation with each other on stage. Speakers included John Maeda, Julia Huang, John C Jay, Jason Mayden, Jun Cha, Jennifer Ferro, Lindsay Jang, David Choe, James Bailey, Charis Poon, Eugene Kan, Jeff Staple, Karen Okonkwo, Madeleine Brand, Helen Zia, and Kenya Hara. "What makes a successful brand from a brand identity and visual language standpoint is having consistent style that can also be fluid and flexible where not everything necessarily looks exactly the same but everything should "feel" the same." Sam Silverman, assistant director of creative media & branding for Ohio State Football, joined the podcast to discuss his work with one of the nation's top football programs and how classic typography inspires his work. Sam touches on how his passion for cars & sneakers and how they led him to a degree in the prestigious industrial design program at Ohio State University. We discuss his transition to graphic design, learning typography skills and being inspired by historic design movements such as Swiss typography and the Bauhaus Movement, and how he is applying these things to the football brand at Ohio State University. The ethics in sports design are a very hot topic in this episode as Sam & I chat about respecting and knowing the history of the discipline, denounce the braggadocious nature of sports designers and try to determine why rip-off culture runs rampnat in college athletics marketing and design. Jason is widely known as a global brand director for the Jordan Brand at Nike, where he led and contributed to the creation of several shoes for athletes and cultural icons including Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Derek Jeter, and Michael Jordan. Following his 13+-year stint at Nike, he started several things in tech at Accel and as an advisor for Stanford’s Design School. He then co-founded a startup with Stephen Curry and eventually creating his very own startup called Super Heroic, a tech-enabled system of play for kids starting with shoes that help them discover that they're actually superheroes. Contrary to what many people think that San Francisco is Silicon Valley, but it's not. In fact, it's not a place. Jason is therefore doing a lot to make sure they're able to leverage this platform to do a ton of educational work in places such as StreetCode Academy and collaborate with other teams like Black Jedi ZULU, and so much more. Jason is the founder of Trillicon Valley, a community of entrepreneurs, athletes, designers, and creatives.
“The Internet is a great tool but you can only learn so much. Actually going to a place physically where you have someone that has [designed] at the highest level, you learn so much more…that experience is invaluable.” FYI: Sneakers are a passion of mine. It's no secret. This episode is quite nerdy on the sneaker talk. Xavier Jones, footwear designer at Reebok, joined the podcast to discuss the footwear design industry and his path to designing for athletes like Shaq and Allen Iverson. Xavier's story begins in the Michigan basketball mecca of Flint. He let's us in on his story and how SLAM Magazine, And One and Ballislife inspired and led him to pursue a dream of designing sneakers for a living. We chat about some of our favorite kicks, discuss the evolution of the Jordan Brand, reminisce about the prime of the And One Mixtape and discuss how sport influences mainstream culture and hence sneaker culture. Xavier and I also discuss the unfortunate topic of violence which often happens at rare sneaker releases and how scarcity mindset and poverty effect the violent aspect of these events. Xavier also chats about some of the design processes as a sneaker designer; including what software designers use, why attending Pensole is vital, the collaboration dynamics of teams working on footwear products & more. Over the past 3 years, Jason has put himself through the entrepreneurial school of hard knocks, teaching at Stanford, working for startups, learning the ropes of finance, and then some; all in effort to launch www.superheroic.com, a brand built to re-engineer play and fashion for kids. On this installment of Innovation Crush, the Chicago born Mayden discusses everything from leadership to invention to design thinking, and even identifying his weaknesses as he becomes Super Heroic. Recorded and edited at www.sae.edu.
Jason Mayden, co-founder of Super Heroic, was the lead designer for the Air Jordan, the highest grossing Nike shoe in history. In his relentless pursuit to be the greatest sneaker designer, he did 1,000 sketches a day and became the first African American to land a design internship with Nike. And in just five years, he familiarized himself with other disciplines to earn his role as Senior Designer — a feat that normally takes around 15 years to achieve— and ultimately designed the Nike shoe of his hometown hero, Michael Jordan. Jason went on to obtain his Master’s degree from Stanford and worked his way all the way to Senior Global Design Director for the Jordan brand. Join Tom Bilyeu as he sits down with the co-founder of Super Heroic, Inc. as he shares his strategies for improving introspection and harnessing child-like curiosity in this episode of Impact Theory. Ep. 024 - Tikh attended an AIGA talk from prominent designer Jason Mayden. Mayden shared an interesting take on mastery rendering it 'dead' in some regard. Now, before you dismiss this idea, be open-minded with this one. Mayden says that our society will continue to see more polymaths - people wide wide-ranging skills. The speed at which things are changing will continue to feel crazy. How do we keep up? Forgetting about mastery. Next, delight. What happens when we delight others? How can we do this more? Why should we do it more? Lastly, how should we deal with anxiety? Anxiety is an extreme emotion. Extreme emotions can be challenging. How can we remain calm? Or mitigate them? It's not easy, but there are tools for us to come back to.
