With a career that has shaped some of the most iconic agencies—including TBWA, Crispin Porter + Bogusky, and McCann—Suzanne shares her journey through the world of brand strategy, creative transformation, and what it truly takes to power creativity. They explore the impact of disruption as a strategic tool, the importance of embedding creativity at every level of an organization, and how brands can create culturally resonant work. Suzanne also reflects on the evolving creative landscape, why the best strategies are never built in isolation, and how bold thinking can drive meaningful change. Tune in for an inspiring conversation on the future of creativity, leadership, and why starting a “selfish company” might just be the best career move.
Produsert av Espen Vik Morild for Utetrend.no Hosted on Acast. What is it? This episode is the seventh in a series of conversations that I'm having in partnership with the Cannes Lion Festival of Creativity. For the weeks leading up to Cannes, we're focusing our study of leadership through a single lens. The impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Creative Industries. Are we moving fast enough? Are we going far enough? Is this an opportunity to fundamentally redesign the creative industries? Or do we adjust and iterate, slowly and carefully? Do we follow the puck, or skate to where it's going? There are opportunities and risks around every corner. Before we jump into this conversation, a couple of programming notes. I had originally intended to finish this series of conversations with this episode, and then to do a wrap up episode on my takeaways from the series. But I've got a chance to interview an industry legend at Cannes, and so I'm going to extend the series by one more. You'll hear that conversation at the end of Cannes next week. And then, the week after, we'll wrap up the series. Tiffany Rolfe is a mother, as well as the Global Chair and Global Chief Creative Officer at R/GA. I asked Tiffany to come back on the show because she is, as you'll hear, a self described tech optimist. She's also one of the most original thinkers that I know. Her professional journey has taken her from Executive Creative Director at Crispin Porter + Bogusky, to Chief Content Officer and Partner at one of the first agency consultancy hybrids, Co:Collective, to her role at R/GA. If you haven't heard our earlier episode in which she talks about the challenges of combining a demanding career with being a mother, it's a really powerful listen. In this conversation, one of the first questions that came up was, how should we think about AI? Stay tuned next week for our final conversation in the series. And in the meantime, thanks for joining us.

After building her career at agencies including Crispin Porter + Bogusky in Boulder, Colorado, and MullenLowe in Boston, Katy Hornaday joined Barkley in 2012 to put roots down in her home region of the midwest. Eleven years later, she has nearly doubled the size of the creative team as the agency continues to build momentum and pick up larger clients, such as Planet Fitness and Red Lobster. Hornaday attributes this growth to the foundation she set as executive creative director, a role she took on in 2017, to build a strong sense of trust, communication and collaboration among the team. In this episode, Hornaday also chats about Barkley's use of generative AI and teases some upcoming work this fall. Evan Fry and I met during the 2014 US National Cyclocross Championships in Boulder, Colorado. I was there promoting my cycling brand, Rouler, and Evan was enjoying a week of racing, industry parties and supporting all his homies. We bumped into each other on top of a hill at Valmont Bike Park where I was dressed up as a crazed rooster heckling riders as they tried to navigate a steep and slippery downhill off-camber portion of the course, and I think he was just stoked to see some weirdo having as much fun as he was having! Our conversation touches on the span of Evan's career in the commercial creative industry and his particular affinity for leading and mentoring young creatives which ultimately led him to his most recent venture, Ideas For Animals, which marries his passion for serving up big ideas with his equally big heart and mission in the world to cultivate a judgment-free life of radical creativity.Evan's one of those people who I have admired and been inspired by since we first met in the midst of mud, blood, beers and bike racing. And it's a real honor to call this guy a friend.About Evan Fry:This is not one of those bios pretending to be written by someone other than the person the bio is describing. If it were, it may have started with “Evan Fry is a longtime veteran of the commercial creative industry, spending more than 12 years winning every award and learning a lot about content production at Crispin Porter + Bogusky during its heyday, and then co-running his own venture with a couple of co-founders at a startup called Victors & Spoils until it was acquired by a holding company (woo hoo!).Since 2015, Evan has been keeping his own tiny agency in the black and trying to show up in the world as a person doing more good than damage. Most recently, Evan launched Ideas for Animals, a creative shop “ideating for kindness” with open source ideas and serving animal-free clients.Evan is a longtime cyclist, animal lover, vegan coach, creative mentor and spiritual seeker. He's been through his share of tough stuff but still sees himself as radically privileged and well-equipped for what this crazy world seems to value…” And so on. But such a 3rd-person approach would be disingenuous, because Evan is writing this himself. Just like most people do when writing their bio. Trying to be clever. Wondering if it's too long. Or boring. But knowing it's probably just fine. Especially because nobody but his mom will read it.You can find Evan on the internet at Ideas For Animals, Fry (his personal portfolio site) or @ideas_for_animals on the ‘Gram. The podcast streams on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Roy Grace may well be the best ad guy you've never heard of.But you'll recognise some of his Volkswagen ads below, created at DDB between 1965 and 1986.Whereas most creatives will lean towards a particular medium - Roy was as good in print as he was in tv.Many creatives make their names on one, great account, like a Nike or Volkswagen, Roy did great work across everything; from J&B Rare whisky to Alka-Seltzer, from Chanel to SOS soap scrubbing pads, from Land Rover to IBM computers. Most creatives create their best work with one partner - Roy did great work with dozens of different partners (leading to the phrase 'everybody did their best work with Roy, Roy did his best work with everybody').Scroll through the work below and some of it may strike you as a little basic, especially compared to todays CGI extravaganzas.Take Mobil oil; tin cans on an empty table tops.It doesn't appear very 'creative'.But next time you need a motor oil, my money says you'll buy Mobil.Even if you didn't like the ads, you'll just think it's the best oil.Forty years after they were made.He left DDB with his writer Diane Rothschild, to set up Grace & Rothschild.Shortly after, they hired a young writer called Allen Richardson.Allen went on to create a lot of great work of his own, a large chunk of it at Crispin Porter + Bogusky in their golden years. But Allen has just created different - a website about Roy.Not a post, A SITE!I caught up with Allen recently to ask what the hell was he thinking?(https://davedye.com/2023/04/24/roy-grace-site-with-allen-richardson/)

SEASON 1, EPISODE 7: Having known of Alex Bogusky (@brogusky) for quite some time through his awesome YouTube channel “Joy of Bike” and his background in the world of advertising (Crispin Porter Bogusky), I was so stoked to finally connect in person to record Episode 7. We met at Valmont Bike Park in Boulder where many of his videos are shot, and over the course of a couple hours we touched on many things. Alex shared stories of growing up in Miami at the forefront of the BMX era, friends that become brothers through a shared bike connection, the pure joy and freedom that a bike can bring, and that sometimes it can also bring such unexpected heartache. Ending with smiles, appreciation, laughs and awareness, I was really happy to work on this one. “The Internet is a great tool but you can only learn so much. Actually going to a place physically where you have someone that has [designed] at the highest level, you learn so much more…that experience is invaluable.” FYI: Sneakers are a passion of mine. It's no secret. This episode is quite nerdy on the sneaker talk. Xavier Jones, footwear designer at Reebok, joined the podcast to discuss the footwear design industry and his path to designing for athletes like Shaq and Allen Iverson. Xavier's story begins in the Michigan basketball mecca of Flint. He let's us in on his story and how SLAM Magazine, And One and Ballislife inspired and led him to pursue a dream of designing sneakers for a living. We chat about some of our favorite kicks, discuss the evolution of the Jordan Brand, reminisce about the prime of the And One Mixtape and discuss how sport influences mainstream culture and hence sneaker culture. Xavier and I also discuss the unfortunate topic of violence which often happens at rare sneaker releases and how scarcity mindset and poverty effect the violent aspect of these events. Xavier also chats about some of the design processes as a sneaker designer; including what software designers use, why attending Pensole is vital, the collaboration dynamics of teams working on footwear products & more. On this episode of Render Time I connected with VML Senior Art Director, Ryan Dowling. Ryan and I met back in 2013 when we were both attending the VCU Brandcenter. After graduating from the Brandcenter Ryan was an Art Director at Crispin Porter + Bogusky where he created work for Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, Hotels.com, Aspen Dental and others. It was also great to hear Ryan's perspective on the work that he has been involved with and how technology will continue to influence things. I also really enjoyed hearing his opinions on where commercial production is headed and how it is impacting agencies like VML. Welcome to episode #541 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. You can't turn down the chance to have a chat with legendary advertising professional, Alex Bogusky. Yes, he was on the cover of Fast Company magazine. Yes, he's been called the Steve Jobs of advertising. Alex joined famed ad agency, Crispin and Porter, in 1989. In just five years, the agency was renamed Crispin Porter + Bogusky and grew to more than 1000 employees with billings over one billion dollars. Under Alex's leadership, the agency became the most awarded advertising agency in the world. They are the only agency to have won the Cannes Advertising Grand Prix in all five catagories. Adweek named him "Creative Director of the Decade" in 2010. That's when he retired from advertising to focus on consumer advocacy, angel investing and the venture capital space. Based on Boulder, Colorado, Alex is involved in many new businesses and ventures. So, does he miss our world? Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #534 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. Is there a formula to creating a winning brand? I used to think this was a silly notion. Similar to when a client wants to create something that goes viral. Then, back in 2010, I read an amazing book by Sally Hogshead called, Fascinate. To this day, it is one of the most thoughtful and actionable books on how to captivate an audience through the power of persuasion. After this book, Hogshead published another best-selling gem called, How The World Sees You. This book really inspired a new direction in how I create content, because of how it focused so deeply not on what I was trying to accomplish, but rather my perception as others define it. Throughout the years, Sally has become a dear friend. She is so much more than a best-selling business book author and world renowned speaker. In her second year of advertising, Sally won more awards than any other copywriter in the U.S., and was described as "the most successful junior copywriter of all time." After working at Wieden + Kennedy and Fallon McElligott, by age 27 she'd opened her first ad agency, with clients such as Target and Remy Martin. Three years later, she opened the West Coast office of Crispin Porter + Bogusky as Creative Director/Managing Director. Most recently, she did something few authors dare to do. She went back and updated Fascinate. Not just by adding in a new chapter or foreword, but by doing a ton of new research and re-writing over half of the book. I thought the first version was next to perfect. This one? Well, let's just say that Sally nailed it. The new Fascinate is perfect. Enjoy the conversation... During a creative career filled with awards and recognition, it took Alex Bogusky a while to realize that none of it mattered unless he loved the work. “You could win the Grand Prix at Cannes—the next day you’re going to go into your office and look at the same dude across the office and try to think of something. It doesn’t feel any better; it didn’t make you any smarter; it doesn’t make anything any easier,” Bogusky says. He did, in fact, win the most prestigious award at Cannes Advertising. Actually, under his leadership, the firm Crispin Porter + Bogusky won in all five categories, and became the world’s most awarded advertising agency. Bogusky himself was named Creative Director of the Decade by Adweek magazine, and Fast Company has called him both the Steve Jobs and the Elvis of advertising. Looking over his many endeavors, Bogusky is a hard person to pin down. There’s a friendly, surfery quality about him, but he’s also gained a reputation as a perfectionist and ferocious supervisor. He’s worked for both car companies and Al Gore’s climate change initiative. He’s overseen iconic ad campaigns for junk food, and the most successful youth-focused anti-smoking campaign in U.S. history. Having left the agency six years ago, he’s now focusing on work with a social responsibility component, supporting multiple creative agencies and a startup accelerator. But for all of the goals he’s achieved, Bogusky says the happiness he’s found in his career comes from loving the journey—that practice of sitting down with other people and thinking really hard to solve a problem. “I’ve found that I had to learn to love the process and forget all the goals. Because the goals, as you achieved them, they didn’t really change anything.” In this interview you will learn: How to embrace change and use it to fuel your creativity Why you need to listen to voices outside your startup and what it could mean for you When and where advertising and branding comes in for a business How to find opportunities to upset the status quo How you can start loving the journey regardless of its highs and lows & much more!

"Yearly campaigns shouldn't be a reinvention of who you are. There should be a core of what you are & what you stand for & what you look like." On this week's show, Surf Melendez joins me to discuss his non-traditional path to the Miami Dolphins where he is Managing Director of Content & Creative for the team overseeing a group of talented creatives that are working with ownership to build an in-house agency. From an architecture degree at Florida, to a career in the restaurant industry & finance, we touch on Surf's eventual landing at ad agency Crispin Porter Bogusky where he launched into the creative world. Due to the crazy hours of advertising and having kids, Surf tell of life change and a passion for sport that lead to Adidas where he created for running, training & football. The want to move back home pointed him to the Miami, where they were wanting to build an in-house agency and serendipitously, the CMO used to be at CP+B client BK. We discuss the team's moves to cultivate a creative culture, their campaigns, controlling what goes out from a marketing perspective and their approach to building a global brand. Finally, Surf leaves us with wisdom on building brands from within organizations. Be sure to stick around after the ending for some extra audio regarding a Dolphins/Marvel collab. I've shot a few campaigns birthed by Aaron Cathey over the years. He's funny, prolific and a smart writer of adverting. He most recently won a Dannes Gold Lion for his work on Hotels.com while at Crispin Porter+Bogusky. Aaron is now back at one of my favorite agencies, Barkley. Aaron and I indulge in enjoyable recollections of past gigs, and you'll love learning from the agency perspective how they hire a director, what they look for, the details, etc. I've posted links on jordanbrady.com for you to see more of Aaron's spots. Welcome to episode #420 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Have you ever taken one of those personality tests? Some employers force people to take them (employees or recruits), while some of us come across them as we continue our journeys in life. Many of us take tests like this just to see if we're doing the work that we're supposed to be doing. Regardless, it's hard to argue that these test don't often pull out a thing or two about us that we may not have realized or paid enough attention to. Sally Hogshead is working on something similar... but different. In her latest business book, How The World Sees You, Sally proclaims that it's not about what you want to become, but how the people you interact with perceive you. Here's the thing: I'm typically skeptical about these sorts of efforts. I was blown away by the simplicity and accuracy that Sally has brought to this notion. In fact, since reading the book and doing the exercises, I've noticed a marked difference in my communication with people because I'm now filtering it by the outputs of How The World Sees You. Sally continues to be one of the most fascinating women in marketing today. He last book, Fascinate, dominated the scene for months, but Sally is much more than a best-selling business book author and speaker. Welcome to episode #197 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Without question, Sally Hogshead is one of the most fascinating women in Marketing today. Scratch that, Hogshead is one of the most fascinating person in Marketing today. It then makes perfect sense that her latest book is titled, Fascinate, and it explores the seven universal triggers for persuasion and captivation (it also happens to be one of the best business books to have come out this year). But Hogshead is much more than a best-selling business book author and speaker.
